Philadelphia July 4th Shooting: 2 police officers injured during Ben Franklin Parkway shooting released from hospital

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Two police officers on security detail were shot and wounded during the Fourth of July festivities in Philadelphia on Monday night.

The shooting happened just after 9:45 p.m. in the 2500 block of Spring Garden as the fireworks display was still underway.

Sources tell Action News that they believe the gunfire erupted from a location in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art but behind the main stage on Eakins Oval.

Attendees at the celebration could be seen running down the Ben Franklin Parkway after the gunfire erupted.

A 36-year-old Philadelphia police department highway patrol officer was grazed in the forehead. He’s been on the force for 14 years.

A photo shared by president of FOP Lodge #5 John McNesby showed a bullet lodged in the officer’s hat.

“It is miraculous that the round stopped in his hat. It initially, I think, went up the inside, hit his forehead, and then the round stopped in his hat,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said during a news conference shortly after midnight Tuesday.

The second officer, a 44-year-old Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the bomb squad task force, sustained a graze wound to the right shoulder. The sheriff’s deputy, a 16-year veteran, was assisting Philadelphia police, as law enforcement from surrounding counties often do during large events in the city.

Both officers were transported to Jefferson University Hospital where they were treated and released early Tuesday morning.

Highway patrol and other officers from Philadelphia police were in formation outside the hospital, saluting and clapping out the injured officers as they went home to recover.

One of the injured officers could be seen with a bandage on his head.

The names of those officers have not been released.

Outlaw said the officers didn’t hear any shots fired.

There is no word on a suspect or any arrests so far in this shooting. Police are asking anyone with information, or who may have photo or video of the shooting, to call them at 215-686-TIPS (8477).

The circumstances of this shooting remain under investigation.

Outlaw said it was not yet known if the shooting was intentional or if the officers were hit by stray bullets – or if the bullets came from celebratory gunfire.

Mayor Jim Kenney, who was also at the news conference, did not mince words when asked about the gun crisis in the city.

“If I had the ability to take care of guns. I would. But the legislature won’t let us. The U.S. Congress won’t let us. The governor does the best he can. Our Attorney General does the best he can. But this is a gun country. It’s crazy,” he said.

“We’re the most armed country in world history and we’re one of the least safest,” he continued. “So, you know, until Americans decide that they want to give up the guns and give up the opportunity to get guns we’re gonna have this problem.”

This shooting comes just hours after gunfire during a Fourth of July parade in Illinois.

Six people were killed and dozens more were injured in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago. A person of interest, in that case, is currently in custody.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Two children who were taken while in the backseat of a running vehicle were found safe on Saturday night, according to Philadelphia police.

The incident started when police say the mother was dropping off groceries for her family on the 2400 block of North 33rd Street in the city’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.

Both children were evaluated at St. Christopher’s Hospital as a precaution.

Police are still searching for the suspect at this time.

Police say 11-year-old Harley Belance, who was shot and killed in the city’s Oxford Circle section, was riding a scooter with a friend.

On Saturday, dozens gathered at the scene, and balloons were released in his memory.

In the crowd was Suzanne Hatcher, who says Harley was her son’s best friend.

“We’re numb. We’re numb. Too young. He’s a baby. Should’ve never happened,” said Hatcher.

Police say Harley and a 14-year-old friend were riding a scooter on the 1500 block of McKinley Street Friday just before 7:00 p.m. when shots were fired.

His friend was shot in the arm and ankle and is in stable condition.

Officials say a man was seen firing shots from the 1400 block of McKinley Street.

At the vigil, people called for the rampant gun violence to stop.

“When it happens, guess who’s left to clean up the mess? The women in our community. So for every young man that’s here, I want you to sit back and take a good look at your life,” said Terence Harrell, who runs the @nogunzone social media account dedicated to highlighting the toll of gun violence in Philadelphia.

Harley, was described as a vibrant young man who loved hanging out with his friends.

Action News spoke with a family friend who didn’t want to be identified.

“His personality has always been so open and bright. And so to see him like this, to hear this news, it is insane. My heart is crushed,” she said.

Police say it’s unclear if Harley and his friend were the intended targets of this shooting.

Six Capitol Police officers suspended, others investigated after Capitol riot

The United States Capitol Police has suspended six officers and is investigating a total of nearly 30 others in connection with their actions responding to the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The department said in a statement shared with The Hill on Friday that the Capitol Police’s Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating a total of 35 officers, and that “Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman has directed that any member of her department whose behavior is not in keeping with the Department’s Rules of Conduct will face appropriate discipline.”

Fox’s Washington, D.C., affiliate, WTTG, first reported the investigations Thursday and CNN also reported that additional probes may take place as investigators look through social media posts and allegations that officers may have been involved in the riot itself.

The suspensions and investigations come amid increased scrutiny over the Capitol Police’s response to the mob attack, in which multiple people died amid the chaos, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. Two additional officers who responded to the rioting have since died by suicide.

Capitol Police last month, in the days following the siege, confirmed it was investigating the actions of some of its officers, with Pittman saying in a statement at the time that the department was “actively reviewing video and other open source materials of some USCP officers and officials that appear to be in violation of Department regulations and policies.”

“Our Office of Professional Responsibility will investigate these behaviors for disciplinary action, up to, and including, termination,” Pittman added. “Several USCP officers have already been suspended pending the outcome of their investigations.”

Pittman took over as acting head of the department after former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund announced he would resign amid lawmaker pressure the day following the breach of the Capitol.

Rep. Tim RyanTimothy (Tim) RyanFormer Ohio GOP chairwoman Jane Timken launches Senate bid Ohio businessman Mike Gibbons steps down from super PAC as he weighs Senate bid Former Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel jumps into Senate race MORE (D-Ohio), who chairs the funding committee that oversees the Capitol Police, said last month that one of the officers suspended had been seen taking a selfie with one of the rioters, while another had worn a “Make America Great Again” hat and gave directions to the mob.

Members of the Capitol Police last week issued an anticipated vote of no confidence in its top leaders over the Jan. 6 riot, including Pittman, two assistant chiefs, three deputy chiefs and a captain of the division that staffs the Capitol.
