Amber Alert canceled after child in backseat of stolen car found safe in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Two children who were taken while in the backseat of a running vehicle were found safe on Saturday night, according to Philadelphia police.

The incident started when police say the mother was dropping off groceries for her family on the 2400 block of North 33rd Street in the city’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.

That’s when someone jumped into the vehicle and took off while a 4-year-old boy and his 1-year-old brother were still in the car.

The 4-year-old child was later found wandering barefoot near North 33rd and Huntington streets.

An Amber Alert was issued after police could not locate the toddler.

A nearby medic heard the Amber Alert call and ultimately spotted the 2014 blue Mitsubishi Mirage on the 2800 block of Huntingdon Street.

Inside the car, police found the 1-year-old sleeping in his car seat while the vehicle was still running.

“We just want to get him home, get him checked out of course. His mother is elated, over the moon,” said the toddler’s father.

Both children were evaluated at St. Christopher’s Hospital as a precaution.

Police are still searching for the suspect at this time.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
