Discounts On Lego, Resident Evil, More

Image: WB Games / NetherRealm

This week, all at once, a perfect storm of deals, discounts, and sales has hit the Nintendo Switch eShop. Batten down the hatches, open up your wallets, and check out some of these limited-time deals, including massive savings on numerous Lego titles, Mortal Kombat games, and hits from Capcom, Ubisoft, and Bandai Namco.

Before we go any further, just note that—with the exception of Ubisoft’s Mario + Rabbids—there aren’t any Mario, Zelda, or Kirby games on sale. Instead of first-party discounts, all of these sales are focused on third-party publishers and developers. But there are still plenty of great games to grab up for cheaper than usual, even if Mario and Luigi aren’t part of it.

Here are some of the best deals I spotted cruising through the various sales currently happening on the eShop. While all of these sales are ending at slightly different times, you more or less have until the end of the month (or a few days past that) to take advantage of these discounts.

Now, with that out of the way, here are the best deals I found so far. (The figures in parentheses are the normal prices.)

Lego DC Super-Villians Deluxe Edition – $11.25 ($75)
Lego City Undercover – $6 ($30)
Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 Deluxe Edition – $9 ($45)
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – $30 ($60)
Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate – $15 ($60)
Dragon Ball FighterZ – $9 ($60)
Dragon Ball FighterZ – FighterZ Pass – $10.50 ($35)
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 Deluxe Edition – $18 ($90)
My Hero One’s Justice 2 Deluxe Edition – $20 ($80)
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization Deluxe Edition – $7.50 ($50)
Just Dance 2023 Edition – $30 ($60)
Immortals Fenyx Rising – $12 ($60)
Assassin’s Creed Anv. Edition Mega Bundle – $45 ($100)
South Park: The Fractured But Whole – $15 ($60)
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen – $10 ($30)
Ace Attorney Turnabout Collection – $35 ($60)
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin Deluxe Edition – $25 ($70)
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate – $12 ($40)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy – $15 ($30)

That’s everything that seemed cool to me. What other bargains are catching your eye?

Fish Play Pokémon Scarlet And Violet, Commits Credit Card Fraud

Image: Nintendo / PNGWing / Kotaku / designer491 (Getty Images)

A YouTuber created an alternative Nintendo Switch controller for their pet fish, which allows them to play video games on livestream. That fish managed to spend real money on some digital purchases while trying to beat a gym leader in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (h/t: GamesRadar). And all of this happened because Scarlet and Violet are so buggy that they can sometimes cause the game to crash to the home page.

Mutekimaru Channel is a popular Japanese YouTuber who streams fish playing video games via an assistive device—an initiative that was intended to help viewers stay home during the pandemic. When a fish swims over a certain area of the “controller,” the game registers it as a specific button input. It’s not just one fish playing Pokémon either. The owner of the channel rotates fish every twelve hours in order to keep them healthy.

If the entire story stopped at “a fish was playing Pokémon on stream,” then I would have been suitably impressed. But no, the fish took things a step further. Not only have multiple fish managed to travel through towns and the wilderness with a specialized controller, they have even managed to spend its owner’s real-life money. I’m a little afraid to think about what else these fish might be capable of. Armed robbery?

ライブ配信でペットの魚にクレジットカード情報を公開され、挙句の果てに決済されてしまった件について

Normally, only one fishy gamer is allowed into the Switch tank at any given time. Once the owner walked away from the game, multiple fish took over and planned their nefarious heist.

The fish had been in the middle of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but the game crashed due to its infamous performance issues. Once the fish was taken to the main Nintendo Switch home page, they managed to open the eshop, where its owner’s credit card information had been saved (and doxxed as a result).

The fish added 500 yen into their owner’s account. Then it used the resulting Nintendo gold coins (a loyalty reward from digital purchases) to buy a golfing cosmetic from Nintendo Switch Sports. According to Sora News 24, the owner intends to request a refund from Nintendo.

Be careful out there, gamers. Not only can hackers and other unscrupulous types get your credit card information, so can common pet fish. So don’t put your credit card number on shared devices!

Switch Dominated 2022 Sales, While Call Of Duty Beat Elden Ring

Image: Nintendo / Kotaku

Now that 2022 is over (thank God), the NPD group has done its thing, collecting and processing all the resulting sales data. Now we can look back at the last 12 months and see what games and consoles sold best, and how much money people spent on this stuff. Shocking nobody, Nintendo had another successful year while Elden Ring nearly topped the charts, beating out both God of War and Madden.

Yes, it’s once again that time of the year when the NPD Group—a decades-old retail tracking and market research company—releases data on what people bought last year. While the group tracks and monitors many different industries, since 1995 it’s monitored the sale of video games and consoles in the United States, and usually publishes some of this data every month.

Nintendo is likely pleased to see that in 2022 the top-selling video game console in the United States was the Nintendo Switch. The NPD doesn’t release specific sales numbers publicly, so we don’t know just how many Switch consoles were sold this year, but Nintendo’s aging console outperformed the PlayStation 5, which was the second best-selling platform last year, and Xbox Series X/S, which came in third. It should also be noted that the Switch was the best-selling console of December 2022 so it appears the Switch is still the hot item to get around Christmas. And two new Pokémon games in 2022 (even if they were buggy) probably helped, too.

Late last week, the NPD Group also released its list of the 20 best-selling games of 2022. Before we jump into the list, remember that Nintendo doesn’t share its digital numbers with the NPD, potentially hurting its own games’ rankings. But anyway, here’s the NPD top 10:

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  2. Elden Ring
  3. Madden NFL 23
  4. God of War: Ragnarök
  5. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
  6. Pokémon Scarlet/Violet
  7. FIFA 23
  8. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
  9. Horizon Forbidden West
  10. MLB The Show 22

While Elden Ring was on a roll this year and still ends up as the second best-selling game of 2022, it wasn’t able to defeat the juggernaut that is Call of Duty. There’s a reason Activision continues to focus almost all of its resources and studios on Call of Duty: because it makes a lot of money. And as always, some big-name sports games and console exclusives fill out the rest of the list. This data is also a great reminder that most folks outside of the people reading this or commenting below don’t care about bugs, as Madden NFL 23 and the new Pokémon games launched in fairly rough states yet they still cracked the top 10.

Now that 2022 is over and done with, it’s time to place your bets for the best-selling game of 2023! The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom seems like a solid bet…assuming it releases this year.

Quiz: Which Of These Games Is On Switch?

21/24. Overwatch was a really tricky one… Confused Yosshi’s Crafted World with Wooly World. And Abe’s Oddysee… Well, there is no Switch port of the game. Only reimagined remake. So, even if talking about technologies… Technically, game is still not on Switch.
What’s about the games that should be on Switch, well… Fighting games! As much as possible! Ports of all PS2 and PS3 fighting games! Ports of all Sega Saturn and Dreamcast fighting games! Just give me the entire fighting games library on Switch! Excluding bad ones, of course. There is no need in enhanced ports of Eternal Champions duology, for example. And Bikini Karate Babes trilogy(!)…
Oh, and quiz is good. But… I NEED MORE QUESTIONS! NEXT TIME, 50 QUESTIONS, AT LEAST, PLEASE!

Atlus Releases Strict Streaming Guidelines For Persona 3 Portable & Persona 4 Golden

Image: Atlus / SEGA

As popular as streaming is nowadays, a number of companies enforce a certain set of rules when it comes to new-release games. The Japanese company Atlus is one that’s done this time and time again with games like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Persona 5 Royal, and now it’s released its guidelines for Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden. This information comes from the company’s Japanese website, so the rules may be slightly different here in the west.

Despite being enhanced re-releases from 2009 and 2012, it’s still asking streamers to be courteous of viewers by placing spoiler warnings in their stream. One example (as highlighted by Siliconera) is to insert a spoiler alert when streaming Persona 4 Golden’s culprit’s dungeon. Anyone streaming or uploading video footage of these returning games is also asked to make sure they feature the Atlus and Sega copyright.

For anyone who wants to make revenue off the videos, they’ll need to make sure they go through a partnership program, like the YouTube one. Users are also forbidden from streaming or putting video footage of these games behind a paywall, and videos exclusively focused on the background music is not allowed.

And if that wasn’t enough – Atlus doesn’t want to see users uploading videos showing content like mods or cheats for the games, or anything it else deems offensive. And if you’re told to take down a video, you’ve got to do it right away. Yikes!

Right, got all that? We hope you do! Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden arrive on Switch next week.

New Persona 5 Royal Update For Switch Resolves Pesky Screen Issue

Image: SEGA / Atlus

Bayonetta 3 isn’t the only Switch game to receive an update today, it seems the Atlus title Persona 5 Royal has also been bumped up to a new build.

It’s not all that much, but Version 1.02 appears to iron out some annoying bugs that may or may not have been impacting your own experience. First, it fixes an issue where the screen dims during gameplay, and the second fix resolves a network error occurring under specific conditions (via Nintendo Everything).

Since Persona 5 Royal arrived on the Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC last year, it’s already generated more than one million sales. If you’ve not already given the game a go on Nintendo’s platform, we highly recommend it:

“Persona 5 Royal remains a game that we absolutely recommend you pick up as soon as you can. This easily stands as one of the very best RPGs of the last decade and you’d be doing yourself a disservice to miss out.”

This Latest Switch ‘Rival’ From Razer Launches At The End Of The Month

Jumping into the specs, the Razer Edge boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 chipset with 8GB RAM and a 6.8-inch FHD+ (2400×1080) AMOLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate. All device variants come with 128GB of internal storage along with SD card support for up to 2TB. You’ve also got a front-facing camera, USB-C support as standard, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The standard Wi-Fi edition is priced at $399.99, but you can also opt for the ‘Founder’s Edition’ at $499.99, which bags you a pair of Razer Hammerhead True Wireless earbuds worth $129.99 separately. 5G supporters will need to hold fire for now, as pricing for this variant has yet to be announced, but Razer has confirmed that Verizon will be the sole provider for US customers.

All in all, it’s a surprisingly affordable device when you compare it to the aforementioned Aya Neo Next and other options on the market, and considering the mobile chipset and the price, those specs aren’t unimpressive, especially compared to Switch which will be entering its seventh year on the market in March. In terms of what you can actually play, however, you are limited to the Google Play store in terms of native gaming — a pretty significant caveat compared to the alternatives — although the Razer Edge also includes support to stream games from Steam and Xbox Game Pass.

Image: Razer

There’s no doubt that this is aimed toward a rather specific audience, and it’s unlikely that you’re going to opt for the Razer Edge over a Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. It’s certainly an interesting system, though, and while Nintendo hasn’t specifically discussed any Switch successor just yet, this device indicates just what’s possible these days when it comes to a relatively affordable gaming device with a mobile chipset and built-in screen.

What do you make of Razer’s new handheld gaming device? Anything here you’d like to see in a potential Switch successor? Let us know in the comments below.

– Ergonomic, non-slip design
– Wireless connection and long-lasting performance
– Adjustable Turbo & Mapping Function
– One-Key Wake-Up & Screenshot Function
