Nintendo, Sony And Xbox Reportedly Skipping E3 2023

Image: E3

Update [Wed 1st Feb, 2023 03:45 GMT]: The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has now provided a statement in response to IGN’s story – saying it remains committed to E3. Here it is in full:

As you have likely seen, IGN published an article last night about E3. While we are not able to comment on the specific claims in the article, we wanted to share our commitment to moving forward with E3.

E3 has a rich history within our industry, and we are always heartened to feel the passion for the show and hear what it means to different people. Reviving a tradeshow after a three-year hiatus and a global pandemic was always going to have its challenges, which is why we conducted an extensive search (in consultation with the ESA member companies) to identify the best partner to produce E3. In selecting ReedPOP as our partner, we have been able to tap into their rich history of hosting popular industry events, like PAX, and broader consumer shows, like Comic Con.

They have made strong progress in reshaping the event and have received tremendous support from industry companies of all sizes who are not only thinking about E3 2023, but how E3 fits into marketing plans for 2024 and beyond.

It’s important to note that even as the show evolves and adapts, it will not impact the core of ESA’s work for its member companies. Our priority remains advocating for your policy interests on the state and federal level.

We will share news and developments regarding E3 as they are available. If you have questions in the meantime, feel free to reach out to me. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Original article [Tue 31st Jan, 2023 00:45 GMT]: E3 is returning as a physical event for the first time in four years in 2023, and while it was expected to be a return to form for one of the biggest showcases in the gaming calendar, it seems it could be without the major players.

According to an “exclusive” by IGN, the gaming media outlet has been informed by “multiple knowledgeable sources” Nintendo, Sony and Xbox will not be joining in on the E3 2023 fun, and will also not have a “presence” on the show floor at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

While it’s no surprise Nintendo won’t be hosting a showcase at the event, as noted in the report, the Japanese company has traditionally maintained a booth at E3 year after year.

The article goes on to mention how PlayStation originally dropped out of the event in 2019 due to “reported disagreements” with the ESA and Xbox this year has already announced its own summer showcase and supposedly won’t have a booth at this year’s event.

In a statement last September, ReedPop said it was ready to “reunite the industry” with the annual gaming event. Full disclosure: Nintendo Life and its Hookshot Media sister sites are partnered with ReedPop.

ReedPop gave IGN a statement regarding its report, suggesting that negotiation is ongoing with “many of the biggest companies in the industry”:

E3 is such a significant event for the game industry and being entrusted with an important cultural touchstone is not a responsibility ReedPop takes lightly. Since ReedPop took on the contract to run E3 six months ago, we’ve worked diligently with ESA members based on their feedback to create a new type of E3 that supports their goals and needs.

This process has taken time due to the tremendous amount of stakeholders offering input, though we appreciate that we could have been more transparent to questions for which we were still finalizing the answers. We continue to work tirelessly to create a show that brings together the global gaming industry. We believe we’ve created a new format for the event that serves the needs of both the industry and its fans, and are committed to building and growing it in the coming years.

As we spent much of 2022 refining how E3 2023 would take shape, reflecting on the feedback we solicited, we did not send a single contract to an exhibitor until the start of this month. We have received a tremendous amount of interest and verbal commitments from many of the biggest companies in the industry, and when we are ready to announce the exhibitors we are confident it will be a lineup that will make the trip to Los Angeles well worth it for the industry and consumers alike.

Sports Story Blocks Access To “Secret Dev Room” In Latest Update (Version 1.0.4)

Image: Sidebar Games

Sports Story wasn’t in the best state at launch, but fortunately, a few updates have been released since then. We’re now up to Version 1.0.4 and while it includes the usual fixes and improvements, it’s also got one other interesting change in it.

Access to the “secret dev room’ has now been blocked. If you haven’t already seen it, it’s a section of the game where you go into a hidden area and can talk to the “developers of the video game” about the development environment. Here are the full patch notes for Sports Story Version 1.0.4:

Sports Story – Version 1.0.4 (29th January, 2023)

Main

Blocked access to the secret dev room.

Progress

  • If the squid boss disappears, he will return to the platform after reloading the game.
  • Wildlands birdie medals task will tick off correctly if medals are collected over multiple rounds.
  • Fixed some trades that required some amount of money to work.

Misc

  • Various fixes for places/events where the player could become stuck.
  • Clubs screens will show beyond 5 clubs correctly.
  • Fixed an issue that can lock the player sometimes after throwing golf balls.
  • 30% coupon working correctly now.
  • Catching fish with the sticky hand won’t cause issues anymore.
  • Fixed the swing bar when using the PureStrike Green woods.

Sports Story got a surprise release last December, and while we didn’t mind it, it wasn’t quite “up to par” after such a long wait. Here’s a brief snippet of our review:

“If you loved the original, you’ll likely find Sports Story to be a fun-enough follow-up, but there’s no denying that it feels like quite a letdown after years of waiting. Assuming Sidebar can sort out the worst of the technical issues, we’d give Sports Story a light recommendation to anyone looking for a quirky take on a sports RPG, but this one doesn’t deserve a spot at the top of your list.”

Advance Wars’ Delayed Switch Release Might Finally Be Reporting For Duty

Image: Nintendo Life

One game we’re hoping to see show up on the Switch at some point this year is Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp. The last update for this title was featured in a Nintendo financial report last November – revealing the game’s release date was still “TBA”.

Now, in the latest development, a thread on Famiboards has apparently highlighted changes to the game’s eShop web page – with “new NSUID attached”. As explained in the same post, a new NSUID means “pre-orders will be going live at some point in the future”.

In addition to this development, it seems more online listings have now resurfaced for Advance Wars 1+2: Reboot Camp. This supposedly includes new and updated listings on Amazon Mexico and Canada, Walmart, Best Buy and EB Games (thanks, My Nintendo News).

As you might recall, Advance Wars for Switch suffered multiple delays and was then pushed back (again) last March due to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Apart from the recent financial report referencing the title, a Nintendo representative also reconfirmed last September the two-in-one game had only been “delayed”, not axed.

It’s pretty clear the Switch version is ready to go as well – with a Switch fan in April last year gaining early access to the title by accident. Nintendo ended up cancelling the purchase and providing a refund.

Round Up: Here’s What Switch Online Players Think Of GoldenEye 007 So Far

Over on the Nintendo Switch subreddit there was also some conversation about the control setup, but others are just happy to see the return of the iconic shooter:

BBQQA – “I am still floored by this happening. For YEARS me and my buddies would complain that we’d never see this with a modern release, that it’d be stuck in IP Rights hell. But somehow this happened. I don’t think the younger generation truly understands the impact this game had, or how improbable this being on the Switch and Xbox are. It’s insane.”

Odie_Odie – “I still play Goldeneye on my N64 about annually, play it for a few hours over the weekend before storing my system away again and I gotta say, The controls aren’t that bad. It’s very similar to the original. I think a lot of people are realizing they just don’t like Goldeneye because of the controls. They’ve always been there, lol.”

MillwrightWF – “…Just a disclaimer older millennial here so 007 was a huge part of growing up. First of all I let my Fortnite obsessed son play and after him absolutely destroying me in Fortnite this was more my style. He does the building and stuff so that is where he gets me. Haha no building in this game son and I took him out several times. But once he got the controls down he wanted to keep playing! It looks pretty good. Not the jumbled mess I was expecting. No slowdown from the original. Looking forward to getting some more time in tomorrow.”

And here’s what the community over on our sister website Pure Xbox has been saying about the Xbox version of the game:

Gamecuber – “as a veteran of the original game from back in the day this version plays better than ever. The modern control scheme on the Xbox drags it kicking and screaming into the present. I’ve briefly tried the Switch version with the original control layout and it would clearly benefit from an actual N64 controller. The Xbox version played brilliantly with twin thumb sticks.”

Bucky – “Played through the campaign on Agent difficulty on the Switch last night and this morning. Just tried a few levels on Xbox and thought it felt better on Switch, although it did require a little button remapping”

SugarSkullM – “I’m loving this but can’t deny the nostalgia factor (and the force) is strong with this one. Still fun after all these years.”

Techno92LFC – “There’s no doubt I along with other people would have loved to seen the Xbox Live Arcade version so don’t understand why we don’t have that one, Perhaps somebody here knows? However, It’s amazing to see this on an Xbox console and with updated controls.”

You can also check out the Pure Xbox team’s impressions if you’re curious to know more about the Xbox version, and once again be sure to take a look at our updated Nintendo Life review for the Switch version:

New Mario Sports Game Leaked by Nintendo Insider

According to a well-known Nintendo insider, another Mario sports game is already in development at Nintendo, Bandai Namco, and Now Entertainment. The insider continues noting that it’s “very likely” that this will be a new Mario Baseball game, which has been dormant since 2008 when Mario Super Sluggers was released via the Nintendo Wii. Unfortunately, this is the extent of the report other than a brief tease that it will have guest characters, and, specifically, Pac-Man.  The report comes the way of Zippo Speaks, an insider and leaker who has proven reliable in the past, particularly when it comes to Nintendo and Persona. And for what it’s worth, they’ve relayed word of previous new installments in the Mario Sports series before they were officially announced.

“In today’s ‘no s**t’ news, Nintendo is preparing a brand new Mario Sports game, this time being developed by Bandai Namco and Now Entertainment. This is very likely to be a new installment in the Mario Baseball series, which hasn’t seen a new entry since 2008’s Mario Super Sluggers, though baseball did appear in Mario Sports Superstars for the 3DS in 2017.”

Given that tennis, golf, and soccer have already all got their new installments on Switch, it seems inevitable that baseball will now get its shine as the last core sport in the series not to be touched yet. In other words, in addition to a report, this is also just a safe prediction.

For now, take everything here with a grain of salt. This is all unofficial information, and even if it’s accurate, it’s also subject to change. This game could get cancelled or kicked down the road and all of sudden all this information will no longer be accurate or relevant, assuming it’s either in the first place.

As for Nintendo, it has not commented on this rumor and the speculation it has created. Typically, it does not comment on rumors or leaks or anything of the unofficial and speculative variety. There’s no reason to expect this pattern to break in this instance, but if it does, we will be sure to update the story accordingly.

Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Service With GoldenEye 007

Well, it’s officially here – you can now play GoldenEye 007 on your Nintendo Switch! Provided you have access to the Expansion Pack service, your mission begins now.

Rare’s famous licensed FPS first arrived on the N64 in 1997. In this new and slightly updated version, players can now participate in online multiplayer. The Switch Online + Expansion Pack service also allows users to save and load game states at any time – making playthroughs a lot easier.

Here’s a bit more about this latest addition to the Switch Online service, courtesy of Nintendo’s PR:

“Enter a world of espionage as Bond in GoldenEye 007. Your covert operation to stop the GoldenEye weapon satellite spans the globe – you’ll infiltrate underground bases, charge through a military train and slink around the depths of a jungle. Along the way, M will brief you on your objectives and Q Branch will support your efforts with an array of gadgets, but the ultimate success of this mission is yours alone. Save the day, then go for the gold in spy-vs-spy action locally** or online in the four-player multiplayer mode and enjoy round after round of first-person competitive action.”

The remaining titles in Nintendo’s current batch of N64 NSO games include Mario Party 3, Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, 1080 Snowboarding and Excitebike 64. Japan will be getting Harvest Moon 64, too.

Iconic GoldenEye “Gong” Sound Potentially Missing From Switch Online Version

Image: Damien McFerran / Nintendo Life

Update [Thu 26th Jan, 2023 21:05 GMT]: Digital Foundry’s John Linneman has stressed that while he “doesn’t know” the exact details, as speculated elsewhere, this could be down to emulation issues.

“N64 doesn’t have an actual sound chip so everything is done in software… So I suppose the emulator simply isn’t emulating the sound chip correctly. Older versions of N64 emulators had this issue in the past.”

So, as many suspected, it sounds like this is a potential emulator issue. Again, we want to stress that, at the time of writing this, the sound effect is only missing in the video and we won’t know if the iconic sound is missing from the Switch version until it drops on NSO tomorrow.

Former Rare composer Graeme Norgate has also pointed out the missing sounds in the clip on Twitter, saying “hope this isn’t the final version” while tagging Kirkhope.

Original article [Thu 26th Jan, 2023 18:15 GMT]: Yesterday, Nintendo decided to drop a bombshell on us and announce that GoldenEye 007 is, at last, coming to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers this Friday, 27th January. What a treat! We’ve been waiting for this news since Nintendo revealed it would be coming to the service eventually.

Just a couple of hours after the announcement, Nintendo shared what might just be one of the most iconic pieces of music from the game — the Q Watch music by legendary Rare composer Grant Kirkhope. It still absolutely rules, but when we had a listen, we (and users on ResetEra) noticed something was missing…

Did you notice it? The ‘gong’ noise? It’s not there! *gasp* In case you’re not familiar with the music, this is what it should sound like.

Okay, so we haven’t got our hands on the game yet, so we can’t verify if it’s simply missing in NSO release or if it’s just missing in this clip. Still, we’re worried about losing what is probably one of the defining sound effects of many of our childhoods.

Many suspect that, if it is missing in the full game, it could be an emulation issue. Previous NSO releases such as Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Paper Mario have had issues unique to their NSO-emulated versions such as missing fog or menus going too fast. Nintendo has been good about patching these problems out, so if it is present, we’re hopeful they’ll also be able to fix this.

The ‘gong’ sound is not just an iconic part of GoldenEye 007 on N64 though — it’s a big part of the movie’s soundtrack too and something of a trademark for French composer Éric Serra. Serra composed the score for the 1995 Bond movie, but you can also hear the famous sound effect in Luc Besson’s Léon: The Professional in tracks such as ‘The Game Is Over’ and ‘What’s Happening out There?’.

A few years back, Grant Kirkhope shared how he managed to recreate what he calls the ‘sonar’-type sound after years of being asked, and @RareLtd showcased fellow composer Robin Beanland demonstrating its genesis:

Hopefully, this is all just a little stumble in the pre-release clip Nintendo shared, but we’ll find out soon enough. We also don’t know if the same issue will be present in the Xbox version, which also releases tomorrow, but we’ll be keeping an eye ear out just in case.

Did you notice the missing sound effects? Do you think it’ll be present in the NSO version when it releases tomorrow? Let us know!

UK Charts: Fire Emblem Engage Bags Franchise’s Second Biggest Boxed Launch

Image: Nintendo

Well folks, it’s happened: FIFA 23 has finally been knocked off its throne by none other than Fire Emblem Engage, the latest entry in the tactical RPG franchise from Intelligent Systems.

Its debut marks the second biggest launch in the series to date, coming in ahead of the 3DS fan-favourite Fire Emblem: Awakening, but behind its Switch predecessor Fire Emblem: Three Houses. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Engage’s boxed sales were 31% lower than Three Houses, but obviously keep in mind that digital sales – for which Nintendo doesn’t provide figures – have made considerable strides since 2019.

Elsewhere, we’ve got the usual big-hitters from Nintendo, including the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Nintendo Switch Sports. Looking at third-party titles, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle enjoyed a 104% sales boost to come in at number twelve, jumping up nineteen spots from last week due to a significant discount at outlets such as Amazon and Argos. Its successor, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, is sadly nowhere to be seen.

Let’s take a look at the top ten:
