Critics Share Strong Reactions to Marvel Sequel

The passing of Black Panther‘s Chadwick Boseman shocked the world back in 2020. The loss of the legendary actor was a heavy weight on the world’s shoulders. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler even recently admitted that he thought about “walking away from this business” altogether.

Thankfully, he didn’t, and the creatives behind the scenes pulled together to continue Wakanda’s legacy in hopes of honoring the late actor. Now, the world is being gifted with a movie that is a celebration of Boseman, and his unforgettable character, T’Challa.

There’s no doubt that the movie will be an emotional ride for anyone who watches, and potentially one of the hardest watches the MCU will ever have.

While fans will have to wait a little bit longer, select members of the press have now had the opportunity to see the entirety of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

So what did they think?

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever First Reviews

Marvel

Select press have finished their screenings of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and their social media reactions are starting to flood the internet.

Orlando Maldonado from Rotten Tomatoes proclaimed the film to be “outstanding,” and “handles loss, grief and revenge with a maturity and seriousness rarely seen in the MCU:”

“Wakanda Forever is outstanding. It handles loss, grief and revenge with a maturity and seriousness rarely seen in the MCU. Black Panther continues to be their crown jewel. Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett and Tenoch Huerta all bring some of the best acting I’ve seen all year.”

Press member Kevin McCarthy made it clear that the film “is a beautifully cathartic tribute to the legacy of Chadwick Boseman:”

“WAKANDA FOREVER is a beautifully cathartic tribute to the legacy of Chadwick Boseman. Reminds us of his monumental impact & that he’s truly still here with is. Great performances from Gurira, Bassett, Wright & Thorne. Huerta was INCREDIBLE. Loved Rihanna’s song & Ludwig’s score.”

Charles Pulliam from Verge praised it for “[centering] grief and the grieving process rather than superheroics:”

“Wakanda Forever’s bigger in scope and scale than Black Panther, but its story is also one of Marvel’s most intimate and heartfelt. It’s definitely a Comic Book Movie, but it’s one that centers grief and the grieving process rather than superheroics and spectacle. Full review soon.”

Ryden Scarnato from Heroic Hollywood strongly believes that “there’s never been a CBM like it:”

“Black Panther: WakandaForever is a powerful film and a great tribute to Chadwick Boseman. There’s never been a CBM like it. Really strong performances all around too. Namor’s motivations were a little weak and I felt the runtime, but it’s still towards the top of Phase 4 for me.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Brian Davids revealed that the movie “mostly abandons the studio’s trademark tone:”

“Black Panther: WakandaForever is Marvel’s most poignant and powerful film to date. It’s heavy and dark in the way that it needed to be, and mostly abandons the studio’s trademark tone. The craft work levels up in every conceivable way, and the performances rise to the occasion.”

Film Critic Fico Cangiano from CineXpressPR specifically praises Letitia Wright and Tenoch Huerta, while also noting that “the mid-credits scene is really moving:”

Wakanda Forever is fantastic! Coogler delivers a soulful, wondrous sequel that packs an emotional punch & effectively explores relevant world themes. A beautiful tribute to Boseman’s legacy. Letitia & Tenoch are great, & the mid-credits scene is really moving.”

Travis Hopson from Punch Drunk Critics pointed out how “the intro of Namor was incredible,” and the film’s overall plot was “packed with emotionally charged twists:”

“Wakanda Forever is exactly the cathartic experience I hoped it would be, helping us move past our grief while watching the Wakandans fight to do the same. The intro of Namor was incredible, the story bittersweet and packed with emotionally charged twists.”

The Direct’s own Jack McBryan declared that Wakanda Forever is “easily the best MCU project of Phase 4,” while also strongly praising the movie’s score:

“Wakanda Forever is phenomenal. Easily the best MCU project of Phase 4. I can not understate how masterful the score is from start to finish. There are no weak links in the cast, but I have to give a special shoutout to Angela Basset and Letitia Wright who really blew me away.”

Sean O’ Connell, of Cinema Blend, called Tenoch Huerta’s Namor “a FORCE,” and “better than [he had] hoped:”

“Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: WakandaForever, above all else, is cathartic. An emotional movie about loss, legacy and healing. The story is intimate, but vast with global power struggles and palace intrigue. Tenoch Huerta’s Namor is a FORCE, better than I hoped. So much to discuss.”

Critic Samuel Leggett Jr. mentioned how “the raw emotions on and off screen can be felt throughout:”

“Wakanda Forever is easily the best Marvel film since Avengers: Endgame. The scope, the camera work, the acting, and the raw emotions on and off screen can be felt throughout! This is the Marvel I’ve missed! I had one word in my heart all night; “WOW…”

Collider’s Steven Weintraub noted that he’s aware many won’t believe the hype coming out of a world premiere, but hammered down on how “[the] movie is awesome:”

“I know you don’t believe when people come out of a world premiere and say a movie is awesome….but Black Panther: WakandaForever is a fantastic sequel and a great movie. I knew it’d be emotional and it was. Expect your eyes to leak. Great job Ryan Coogler”

Perri Nemiroff, also from Collider, called it “an immensely powerful story of forging forward:”

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is excellent. An immensely powerful story of forging forward—shattering at times, but also beautifully cathartic and heartening. Cannot get over how well the film earns that title.”

She continued in a second tweet, pointing out that Marvel “couldn’t have found a better Namor:”

“Continues to be one of my favorite ensembles out there. M’Baku is still my #1, but Letitia Wright’s Shuri is quite the beating heart of this film. And Tenoch Huerta? They couldn’t have found a better Namor.”

Wakanda Forever!

It certainly seems like Wakanda Forever will be just as emotional as expected.

Somehow Ryan Coogler seems to have pulled it off and delivered a fantastic movie—possibly even one of Marvel Studios’ best if these reactions are to be believed.

It sounds like there’s also a shift in tone away from the usual Marvel Studios that’ll make Wakanda Forever a particularly special journey. If there was ever an MCU project that shouldn’t be brought down by an overly comedic tone, this would be the one.

Tenoch Huerta’s Namor seems to have gone over fantastically, with not a negative word on his character’s introduction in sight. The character is a massive part of the Marvel world in the comics, so to hear that he was done justice will undoubtedly please many.

The acting, in general, seems to be a highlight of the project—which isn’t surprising given how personal the film was for nearly everyone involved.

With the level of quality that this movie seems to be, maybe Marvel Studios will start considering Ryan Coogler to direct Avengers: Secret Wars.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters worldwide on November 11.

Marvel Snap Ignored A Card Game Staple And It Worked

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

Marvel Snap is a very good card game that recently left early access and is now playable on Android, iOS, and Steam. However, unlike basically every other digital card game, Snap doesn’t include a mulligan option at the start of the match, letting you ditch some or all of your cards for new cards. But as Ben Brode of developer Second Dinner explained on Twitter, while the lack of a mulligan was a problem with early playtesters, the developers fixed it by making just one tiny change to a single card.

Released last week after a few months in early access, Marvel Snap is a free-to-play card game created by former Hearthstone director Ben Brode and his new game studio, Second Dinner. It’s quickly become one of the most popular mobile games going, and a favorite among some of Kotaku’s staff. I’ve been playing it on and off since the beta and think it might be my favorite digital card game in years thanks to its focus on quick matches, random elements, and small decks. However, as part of this stripped-down approach to a card game, Brode and his team decided early on to not include mulligans. And making that work required one tiny tweak to Quicksilver.

On Twitter, Brode explained that what makes card games fun is variance. However, Second Dinner also wanted Marvel Snap decks to be small, as deckbuilding is often one of the biggest obstacles for new players. And the smaller the decks, the less variance they’ll have. So in order to keep players from just throwing away cards to get precisely what they needed—and to let folks bluff using the snap mechanic—Second Dinner ditched mulligans.

As you might expect, cutting out such a popular and traditional part of card games caused some issues. According to Brode, whenever people played early builds of Snap, they mostly complained about the lack of mulligans.

“We knew that once players understood how the Cube worked and how you could bail out at any time for only a small loss of Cubes, the impact of bad luck would be lessened,” wrote Brode. “And also, missing a one or two drop in Snap is really different than in other card games. There’s no ‘tempo’ in Snap. You don’t ‘lose board control’ by not playing a card early. It might not be the best, but you’re certainly not doomed.”

Even though Brode and the team were confident players wouldn’t miss the mulligan once they understood the game, the amount of early feedback concerning not being able to play anything on turn one and not having a chance to swap cards was hard to ignore. But instead of completely reworking the game, the team made a single change. It placed Quicksilver into the deck players start the game with. The card only uses one energy, and also has an ability that always places it in your hand at the start of a match.

“Immediately [after this tweak] the mulligan feedback dried up,” explained Brode. “Who needs to mulligan when you always draw your 1-drop? Eventually, many players decide to swap Quicksilver for a different card, but at that point you’re making the choice to risk a bad opening hand.”

Brode finished up the thread explaining that developers often have to decide if problems are system-wide or just an issue with some content. In other words, does a problem necessitate you reworking the entire game system, or can it be solved with a smaller tweak, like forcing a useful one-energy card into players’ first deck?

In this case, a tiny change to Quicksilver solved the problem without fundamentally changing up Marvel Snap. That’s a good thing, because I’m happy with how the game plays today, and don’t miss mulligans at all!

Marvel Just Replaced a Key Netflix Daredevil Character In She-Hulk Episode 5

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has brought one shocking revelation after another through its first five episodes, from the unexpected relationship between Madisynn and Wong to the long-awaited social media reign from Jameela Jamil’s Titania. But with each week that passes, one other name has been consistently on MCU fans’ minds ahead of his hotly anticipated comeback: Daredevil.

Warning – the rest of this article contains spoilers for Episode 5 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

In exciting fashion, the first signs of Matt Murdock’s red-suited alter-ego came to the screen in Episode 5 when the camera panned past his red outfit and landed on the new golden-horned mask that he will don in a later episode. While the jury is still out on where Matt himself is, fans now know that his suit is made by Luke Jacobson, the very same person who helped Jen upgrade her own wardrobe.

On the one hand, it’s a thrilling development as fans know that the Man Without Fear is finally inching closer towards his first action in a superhero outfit on Disney+, which was shown off through the promotional tour for She-Hulk. Additionally, it brings some of his potential past into question with discussions still raging about whether Charlie Cox’s work as Daredevil on Netflix is canon with the MCU – particularly thanks to one character that was replaced in Episode 5.

MCU Trades Daredevil Suit Designer for She-Hulk’s

Episode 5 of Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law confirmed that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock is now working with Los Angeles-based designer Luke Jacobson on his Daredevil costume.

Marvel Studios

This suit was teased in the episode’s final seconds as the camera zoomed in on a package with a new gold mask, complete with horns on the top. This is the very same mask that fans saw Daredevil use in a couple of seconds of footage from trailers that premiered during She-Hulk‘s promotional run.

Marvel Studios

With Murdock and Jacobson now working together, this indicates that the LA designer has taken over for Melvin Potter from the Daredevil series to make Matt Murdock’s suit, should the Netflix original be considered canon with the MCU.

Netflix

Potter was the character who originally made Daredevil’s main suit at the end of Season 1, although things took a turn for the worse later in the series. He was coerced by Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin to make a new suit for Ben Poindexter/Bullseye in order to frame Matt Murdock, although Potter eventually told Murdock about the plan.

The costume designer ended up getting caught by the FBI for a parole violation while Murdock took down Bullseye and Kingpin, and Potter was eventually put in jail.

Should this storyline be canon in the MCU, this would likely be the reason that Murdock goes to Jacobson looking for a new Daredevil suit. Potter wouldn’t be able to make one from prison, and it would also give him a chance to get something new to try to separate himself from the Bullseye incident.

Daredevil’s Murky Future in the MCU

She-Hulk will be the first time that fans see Daredevil out of his natural New York City habitat as he interacts with Marvel’s other premier lawyer on the west coast. And once he comes, some of those questions about the canon status of Daredevil from Netflix may be answered, but this episode still leaves those mysteries open-ended.

It makes perfect sense why Matt Murdock would have to find a new suit designer if Melvin Potter is still in prison, although it’s still unknown what exactly drives him to fly 3000 miles away from his Hell’s Kitchen home. Another point is that it would be difficult to get a superhero costume like his through airport security if he chose that travel option, with the drive likely being something he couldn’t tackle due to his vision imparity.

On the other hand, this could simply be a way to have the Man Without Fear get a fresh start in the MCU, as he could be early in his run as a hero or simply getting an upgrade to his outfit. And in the end, this may not even be a question that’s answered in She-Hulk’s solo series, as Daredevil will only be around for one of the next four episodes.

Hopefully, more of these questions will be answered for Cox’s fan-favorite hero, especially with just over 18 months until he takes on his next solo journey in Daredevil: Born Again. With this development being so fresh, things could change drastically for the blind lawyer as his tenure in the MCU pushes forward.

The first five episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are available to stream on Disney+.

Brie Larson unsure how much longer she’ll be Captain Marvel

Since starring as the intergalactic superhero Captain Marvel in the MCU’s first film focused on a woman lead, Brie Larson has faced the constant ire of sexist Marvel fanboys and their twitchy Twitter fingers. Utilizing the classic online tool of misogyny, that specific group of fans has review-bombed Captain Marvel, gotten mad at her cheeky Instagram posts, and dissected her to a degree that reads as overly invested for people that hate her. That’s a lot for anyone to handle, and Larson seems to be well over the internet trolls as revealed in an interview at the D23 Expo this past weekend.

Speaking with Variety, the Room actor was asked how long she expected to play Captain Marvel.

“I don’t know,” said Larson. “Does anyone want me to do it again?” Shrugging after her answer, the interviewer tells Larson to not “be so modest” before she gives a more serious reply to his question.

“I don’t know. I really don’t have the answer to that,” continued Larson.

Those comments could easily be interpreted as Larson beholding to Marvel’s spoiler sniper in the sky, yet with the mountain of vitriol she’s faced for the role, it wouldn’t be unimaginable that Larson may not have any long-term future plans to continue the character. A few fans on Twitter seemed to view the interview in the latter interpretation, tweeting out shows of support to the actor and her role in the MCU.

“Hopefully a long time! I love her Captain Marvel,” wrote a commentator in response to the video. Another fan added, “I, for one, would love to see more of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. The film is a guilty pleasure of mine and I think Larson is a great fit for the role.”

Of course, we can expect to see her in the upcoming The Marvels, which has Larson teaming up with Teyonah Parris (WandaVision) and Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani in Nia DaCosta’s sequel to Captain Marvel. While at D23 Expo, Larson and crew revealed the first trailer of the space-focused film to the crowd in attendance, teasing us until The Marvels premieres next July.

‘100% confirmed’ Galaxy S23 Ultra rumor highlights what a marvel its 200MP camera will be

It has been a while since Samsung announced its 200MP sensor and it’s highly likely that the South Korean company’s next premium phone, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, will boast this camera. It’s apparently not the same as the HP1 and HP3 versions that the company has already announced and there were some speculations that the 200MP sensor meant for the S23 Ultra would be really big but that seemingly is not the case.
Smartphone vendors have a size limitation that prevents them from equipping their phones with very large sensors. In recent times, we have seen companies employ a technique called pixel binning whereby smaller individual pixels are combined together to act as one big pixel and churn out more detailed images.
For instance, even though the S22 Ultra rocks a 108MP camera, it takes 12MP images by default. Similarly, the new Apple iPhone 14 Pro which comes with a 48MP main sensor produces 12MP shots and this is achieved by combining data from 1.22μm photosites to deliver images comparable to a sensor with 2.44μm pixels.
Such tricks can only get you so far though and at some point, physics will catch up and camera sensors will have to get bigger to accommodate more megapixels. So, while it’s unlikely that the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s monster 200MP sensor will be the same size as the S22 Ultra’s 108MP unit, the good news is that the increase will almost be insignificant.

Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP camera will pack more megapixels while remaining largely the same size

This scoop comes from esteemed leaker Ice Universe who says he is 100 percent sure that the S23 Ultra’s main 200MP camera will be 1/1.3 inches in size and it will have 0.6μm sized pixels and a larger aperture of f/1.7 for getting in more light. For reference, the S22 Ultra’s 108MP sensor is 1/1.33 inches with 0.8µm pixels and an f/1.8 aperture.

He adds that it will only be a little bigger than the iPhone 14 Pro’s 48MP main camera which he says is also 1/1.3 inches. There is a chance that it will be smaller than the sensors on some competing Android phones that will be released next year. He might be referring to phones that may use 1-inch sensors.

As has been evident by its recent attempts to poke fun at Apple, Samsung is more focused on maintaining its lead over the iPhone maker. As Apple and Google have demonstrated, higher resolutions are not the end all and be all, but they are generally better for pro users as they give them more options to work with.

The megapixel count is still viewed by many buyers as a benchmark number for deciding how good a camera is. At the end of the day, there are many factors that influence image quality other than megapixels, including the sensor size because a larger sensor can fit more pixels and capture more details.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is rumored to retain the 10MP telephoto sensors of the S22 Ultra with 10x and 3x optical zoom. Nothing is known about the ultrawide camera. The company is also expected to use software smarts to help the S23 Ultra deliver significantly better images and videos. It’s safe to assume that it will outshine most top camera phones of 2022.

What to Expect from Marvel and Star Wars at D23

Unfortunately, not all the fun of D23 will be available to those watching from around the world, as Disney has already published a limited schedule of what will be streamed online. That will include much of what was discussed above, but not the blockbuster Hall D23 panel that will undoubtedly make the biggest splash.

D23 will include a panel on Friday focused on Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney’s upcoming video games which will be streamed online. The event is expected to include reveals from LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and more upcoming releases.

When it comes to the big Hall D23 presentation, there’s no telling what Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios have to offer, especially having already had some massive reveals earlier in the year. The MCU is expected to highlight the likes of Werewolf by Night, Deadpool 3, and more, while Star Wars goes big on the future of the MandoVerse and its other Disney+ content.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy will make their big D23 presentations on Saturday, September 10.

Marvel, Tomb Raider Games Drop as Low as $0.70 During Huge Sale

There’s a surprise sale going on this weekend that extends to the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC (via Steam) platforms, and if you’ve got a Tomb Raider game or a Marvel title that you’ve been on the fence about picking up, you may be able to acquire that and a few more at some exceptionally low prices. The sale encompasses both of those franchises as well as numerous others like the Deus Ex games and includes titles like Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider as well as the games’ more expensive versions.

Square Enix, for those who might’ve missed the news, recently sold off its Western Studios including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal. Embracer Group acquired them as well as the games they were working on including the live-service Marvel’s Avengers game that’s still getting new content. Now that the acquisition is finalized, Square Enix seems to be looking to offload its remaining stock of games like those in the Marvel and Tomb Raider series.

As such, those games are really cheap right now. Like, less than $1 cheap. Classic Tomb Raider games like Tomb Raider: Underworld and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness are going for under a dollar right now which admittedly not be what people are after, but you can even get the Tomb Raider Collection on Steam at the price of $20.20 whereas the normal price for that is $201.99.

The same kinds of deals can be found when looking at the Marvel games, too. Unfortunately for those who don’t already have the game, it looks like all of the copies of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy have been scooped up already seeing how no matter what platform or edition of the game you pick, the only option is to be put on a waiting list. Marvel’s Avengers is still in stock depending on what platform and edition you’re looking for, and if you’re a collector who might not care as much for the game but like the collectibles that come with the Earth’s Mightiest Edition, that one’s on sale, too. It normally costs $149.99 and is on sale for $15.

As others have found out, some of these purchases are for physical editions of the games which means that Square Enix might get you on the shipping costs even if the initial prices are exceptionally low. That’s most likely why pretty much all of the Steam purchases have been wiped out by now, but those looking for a deal can still browse through the games through the links above to see what’s left.
