Jeremy Renner accident – update: Marvel star thanks hospital staff after being ‘crushed’ by snowplow

Jeremy Renner shares video recovering in hospital after snowploughing accident

Actor Jeremy Renner was “completely crushed” by the snow plough that left him with serious injuries.

The Marvel star underwent two surgeries at a Nevada hospital after the “tragic”incident that has left him on a “long road to recovery”.

He had been trying to rescue his car from the snow when he was accidentally run over by the heavy-duty snowplough he’d been operating.

“We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopaedic injuries and has undergone surgery today (2 January),” Renner’s family said in their original statement. “He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.”

On Wednesday (4 January), TMZ obtained the details of the log made by emergency services at the time, including details from the 911 call that give further insight into Renner’s immediate injuries.

According to the publication, Renner, 51, was audibly groaning in the background of the call, due to his pain.

The record notes that the right side of Renner’s chest had collapsed and that his upper torso was crushed.

The plough accidentally ran over one of the actor’s legs, despite a large array of safety features, leading to major blood loss, a neighbour said.

In his first post since the accident, Renner shared a selfie from his hospital bed with the caption: “Thank you all for your kind words. Im [sic] too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

Do you need a licence to drive a Snowcat?

Following the Sheriff’s press conference, a reporter asked if anyone could drive a Snowcat or if you needed a licence to operate one.

“It was on a private road, so he can drive that Snowcat. In this instance, as Mr Renner always does, those private roads. He was being a great neighbour and he was ploughing those roads for his neighbours up there. Again they had three feet,” Sheriff Balaam responded.

Now, while the Marvel actor was on private roads, many companies require professional Snowcat operators/drivers to have at least a driver’s licence. Some even require their drivers to go through training and certification before operating the Snowcat.

Jeremy Renner is a ‘great neighbour’, says local sheriff

In recent weeks, Jeremy Renner has become known in his Nevada neighbourhood for helping with the mounting snow.

According to Sheriff Darin Balaam, the Hawkeye star is a “great neighbour” and always uses his snow plough to clear local roads.

“Throughout the community, he has been very generous and he’s one of those individuals that most of the time you don’t know he’s doing it, but he has made a tremendous impact on this community,” he told US media.

Why did Renner own a PistenBully?

Although more commonly owned commercially, this type of heavy-duty machinery is becoming trendy for private use, especially in the Colorado mountains.

Renner, in particular, lives in Reno, Nevada, where they experienced extreme snowfall this December. The night before the accident, the area had received three feet of snow.

The New Year’s Eve snowstorm left more than 17,500 homes without power in Washoe County, where Renner resides.

Right before the accident occurred, Renner was clearing snow from driveways around his neighbourhood.

Marvel Sequel Will Be His Last

Drax’s final ride comes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Image: Marvel Studios

Ten years ago, when James Gunn cast former professional wrestler Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, some were skeptical. Sure, this dude was a charismatic wrestler, but could he act? Oh, how that has changed, now that Bautista’s breakout Marvel Studios role has propelled him into a diverse, impressive acting career. Though the character is a fan favorite, the actor reveals that he never wanted Drax to be his signature role and that he’ll officially be leaving it behind this May when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 his theaters.

“I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him,” Bautista told GQ magazine. “But there’s a relief [that it’s over]. It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy—it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”

So, there are a few things to unpack here and we’ll start with what we know. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn confirmed on his Instagram Stories that, yes, the upcoming film will be the final time Bautista plays Drax. Does that mean Drax will be recast (which Bautista himself said he’s cool with)? Does he die? Does he just go off and leave the Guardians? Those answers will come in a few months. But, for now, we at least know where these feelings are coming from.

As for Bautista’s relief at leaving it behind, you almost understand that too. While Drax is a big, boisterous character, matching Bautista’s physical stature, those aren’t the types of characters he’s most interested in playing. For example, in the GQ profile, he talks about just wanting to work more and more with director Denis Villeneuve, who cast Bautista in small roles in both Blade Runner 2049 and Dune (though the role is significantly expanded in this year’s Dune: Part Two). “If I could be a number one [on the callsheet] with Denis, I would do it for fucking free,” the actor said. “I think that’s how I could find out how good I could be. He brings out the best in me. He sees me in a different light, sees the performer that I want to be. That might be how I solve the puzzle.”

He’s also worked with the likes of Sam Mendes, Zack Snyder, Rian Johnson, and, later this year, M. Night Shyamalan. He’s not afraid to take a smaller role, as long as it means working with someone great. And while Gunn is certainly great, after three full films, a Holiday Special, and several other Marvel cameos, you understand how a performer like that is ready to leave it behind and try something new.

What do you think happens to Drax in Guardians 3? Let us know below.

Jeremy Renner accident – update: Police seize Snowcat that crushed Marvel star to rule out ‘mechanical failure’

Jeremy Renner in ‘critical but stable’ condition after ‘weather-related’ accident

Actor Jeremy Renner has undergone two surgeries at a Nevada hospital after suffering serious injuries in a “tragic” snowploughing accident.

The Hurt Locker star is “conscious, stable and speaking” and reportedly underwent the surgeries as part of his “long road to recovery”.

“We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopaedic injuries and has undergone surgery today (2 January),” Renner’s family said in their original statement. “He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.”

In a press conference on Tuesday (3 January), Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam described how a family member had been driving Renner’s car when it got stuck in the snow.

“He went to retrieve his PistenBully or SnowCat – an extremely large piece of snow-moving equipment – to get his vehicle moving,” Balaam said. “After moving the vehicle from the stuck location Mr Renner got out of the PistenBully to speak to his family member and it started to roll.

“He attempted to try and get into the driver’s seat of the PistenBully, it was at this point that he was run over by the PistenBully.”

It’s been a few days now since Jeremy Renner was hospitalised after being ran over by his snow plough.

In their first and only statement so far, Renner’s family wrote 2 January: “We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and has undergone surgery today.

“He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.

“Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families.

“They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”

John Legere wishes Renner well ‘from one superhero to another’

Former T-Mobile CEO John Legere somewhat confusingly shared well wishes for Renner “from one superhero to another”.

The tech magnate has frequently likened himself to Batman over the course of his career, describing competitors like AT&T and Verizon as his “villains”.

Renner, meanwhile, plays a real superhero – Marvel’s Hawkeye.

Renner is an ‘honourary deputy sheriff’ of the area

To many, Renner is best known as Hawkeye, but did you know he holds another special title in his community?

“He is an honourary deputy sheriff,” Balaam shared. “When I took office in 2019, he came and with his popularity amongst kids in the Marvels, he has a huge impact. Those kids that he touched during Shop with the Sheriff – he showed up and shopped with our kids – I can guarantee they will never forget that moment that they got.”

“He shared his time with us there and not only shopped with a few kids but interacted with the kids,” Balaam added.

“Throughout the community, he has been very generous. He’s one of those individuals that I can tell you most of the time you don’t know that he’s doing it, but he has made a tremendous impact on this community.”

Snowcat accidents aren’t uncommon

While this was a “tragic” incident it was not a freak accident. Although Balaam could not provide specific numbers or statistics for how common this kind of Snowcat incident is, he did say: “I would have to tell you probably, there’s always at least – because this type of Snowcat is one you’d see at ski resorts – that there’s always these types of injuries or accidents that occur. That exact number I do not know.”

However, during Tuesday’s press conference, Sheriff Balaam confirmed that there “was no doctor on scene. It was good neighbours of Mr Renner’s that came out with some towels and rendered some aid”.

When asked whether they had tied a tourniquet, Balaam responded: “That part I do not know. I just know that they came out with some towels and helped him until our first responders could get there.”

Sheriff clarifies ‘misinformation’ of Renner’s accident

Further in his press briefing on Tuesday (3 January), Sheriff Darin Balaam of Washoe County shared clarifying “details” of Renner’s accident to clear up “some misinformation that’s circulated”.

Balaam said: “I want to be clear here as well as going on a major accident investigation and we are handling it as we would any other major accident investigation. We are still conducting interviews and processing items from the scene.

“Based on our investigation, Mr Renner’s personal vehicle, which was being driven by a family member, had become stuck in the snow near his home.

“Mr Renner went to retrieve his PistenBully, or Snowcat, an extremely large piece of snow removal equipment, weighing at least 14,330 lbs (approx 6500 kg), in an effort to get his vehicle moving,” he continued.

“After successfully towing his personal vehicle from its stuck location, Mr Renner got out of his PistenBully to speak to his family member. At this point, it is observed that the PistenBully started to roll. In an effort to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr Renner attempts to get back into the driver’s seat of the Pistenbully.

“Based on our investigation, it’s at this point that Mr Renner is run over by the Pistenbully. An eye-witness detailed seeing Mr Renner getting into the PistenBully and not seeing him again until the PistenBully came to a rest in a pile of snow in front of his driveway,” Balaam explained.

“At this point in the investigation, we do not believe Mr Renner was impaired at all and we believe this is a tragic accident.”

While the investigation is ongoing, Balaam stressed that they “do not suspect any foul play”.

Local authorities share timeline of accident response

During a brief press conference yesterday (3 January), Sheriff Darin Balaam of Washoe County provided a quick timeline of local authorities and medical response to Renner’s accident.

Balaam began: “On Sunday morning at 8:55am, a 911 call was received for a 10-50, or a crash involving a Snowcat versus pedestrian. The subject had been run over by a Snowcat in the area of Mount Rose Highway.”

Elaborating on the weather and road conditions at that hour, Balaam said: “The previous evening, we had seen approximately three feet of snow fall in the Mt Rose area, and multiple cars were abandoned on the multiple roads, including Mt Rose Hwy.

“Additionally, while it was not snowing at the time of the accident, Mt Rose Hwy was closed at that hour because of severe winter weather, of snow which had not yet been removed from the highway.”

Balaam shared that the first Washoe County Sheriff’s unit arrived on-scene at 9:30am, explaining that the “delay was a direct result of the weather, the traffic – moving around abandoned cars in the roadway – and the closure of Mt Rose Hwy”.

He continued: “When the first Washoe County Sheriff’s Office unit arrived on-scene, Truckee’s Meadows Fire Protection District and North Lake Tahoe Protection Fire District were on-scene.

“At 9:37, care flight landed in the vicinity of Mt Rose Hwy,” Balaam added. “At 9:56, Mr Renner was taken via care flight to a Reno area hospital.”

Marvel Nearly Had its Own Super Smash Bros. Style Fighting Game

Over the last two decades or so, Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. franchise has inspired a number of imitators. Games like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Multiversus, and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl have all taken inspiration from the Smash formula, pitting their respective company’s characters against one another. While DC characters appear in Multiversus, it seems Marvel very nearly had its own take on Smash Bros., in the form of a Super Hero Squad game planned for the Nintendo DS! As revealed by developer Luke Muscat, THQ wanted the team at Halfbrick to mimic the formula using characters like Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man.

Video from the game build can be seen around the 3:47 mark in the video embedded below.

The idea of pitting these characters against one another in a Smash style game sounds like an inspired idea, and the project was about halfway complete when it all fell apart. According to Muscat, someone at THQ realized that the publisher’s contract required that Marvel Super Hero Squad be a street brawler, in the tradition of games like Konami’s X-Men. As a result, developer Halfbrick had to take what they had and rush together a game that fit the formula. Marvel Super Hero Squad released on DS in 2009 and was met with largely negative feedback.

It’s interesting to think what could have been, and how the game might have run on the DS hardware. While Super Smash Bros. has seen releases on several Nintendo platforms, the series never did get an installment on DS; the franchise’s first portable entry wouldn’t come until 2014’s Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. It’s possible Nintendo knew the handheld wasn’t powerful enough for the game, but Marvel Super Hero Squad might have helped fill the void if Halfbrick had pulled it off. Instead, it remains one of the more underwhelming games based on a Marvel property!

Would you like to see a Marvel game in the style of Super Smash Bros.? Do you think this game would have been well-received? Let us know in the comments or share your thoughts directly on Twitter and on Hive at @Marcdachamp to talk all things gaming!

Marvel Snap developer was inspired by friend’s toilet gaming mishap

Comment

Ben Brode, a co-founder of game development studio Second Dinner, recalls a moment that drove him to make a snappy Marvel card game: At least six years ago, his friend was playing the mobile game “Hearthstone” on the toilet with a control warrior deck. He matched up against another control warrior deck user, and the game took 40 minutes.

“At the end of the match, he stood up and his legs had fallen asleep. And he fell over and broke his leg in the bathroom,” Brode said during an interview with The Washington Post in Los Angeles while his Second Dinner co-founder Hamilton Chu guffawed. “And I felt somewhat responsible for this.”

Brode, who was a lead designer on “Hearthstone,” said that while matches are supposed to be more like seven minutes long, they occasionally drag out. And that’s why he and Chu wanted to explore even shorter card games, and eventually settled on making “Marvel Snap.” His control warrior friend yelled for help on the bathroom floor and ended up in a cast, Brode said.

Last week, “Marvel Snap” won best mobile game at the annual Game Awards, beating out popular titles like “Genshin Impact” and “Apex Legends.” The developers, formerly senior leadership at “Hearthstone” developer Activision Blizzard, started their own studio Second Dinner in 2018. “Marvel Snap” is their first game.

‘Marvel Snap’ devs’ first idea was so good they refused to believe it

Chu said that Marvel’s name lends credibility to a start-up like Second Dinner, and it makes the card game hold more excitement for players since the characters are instantly recognizable. A former Blizzard co-worker who is now an executive at Marvel Games helped make the collaboration happen.

“Marvel Snap” is easy on beginners, taking them through a tutorial where players slap down cards from a 12-card deck featuring characters like Iron Man, the Hulk and Hawkeye.

The developers hope to add the ability to play against friends to the mobile app by next month.

“It’s our biggest thing we’re working on right now,” Brode said. “But you know how things go sometimes, last minute bugs, things slip.”

When it comes to taking initiative with Marvel’s intellectual property, Chu talked about being able to skip the layers of bureaucracy that come standard when working for a large company like Blizzard.

“That game could not have been made if we were still inside Blizzard. Blizzard, why would they work with somebody else’s intellectual property? That’s just not strategically the right thing for Blizzard to do,” Chu said. “But we can do it because we don’t have to worry about stuff like that, and it does make sense for us.”

Chu said that if he had tried to pitch “Marvel Snap” to Blizzard, he would have had to clear approval with many people, including a business presentation and months of convincing.

When to snap in ‘Marvel Snap’

Brode and Chu left Blizzard in 2018, years before the company was hit with several lawsuits over allegations of sexual harassment and gender discrimination, and before Microsoft proposed to acquire it for $68.7 billion. When asked how Second Dinner can avoid the same corporate culture issues that Blizzard faces, Brode said, “It’s a really complicated answer.”

“Hiring is a really big piece. Doing that really well and making sure that we have opportunities to hire people from a ton of diverse backgrounds to help make sure that we’re not homogenous,” Brode said. “Making sure that people feel very empowered to come raise their hands when stuff does go wrong. And then creating policies and a company culture where there aren’t opportunities for things to go wrong in the first place.”

Second Dinner is one of several game studios started by ex-Blizzard employees. There’s also Notorious Studios, started by former “World of Warcraft” developers, making an untitled fantasy game. And Frost Giant, created by ex-StarCraft developers, plans to open up a new game “Stormgate” in a testing phase next year.

For Brode and Chu, starting their own company was risky and scary, but having a pedigree from Blizzard helped them have brand name recognition. Choosing a new name for the studio also proved to be a fun task.

“I have a really weird sleep schedule, and I’m a vampire, basically,” Chu said. “And so I have second dinner every night. It’s my favorite meal I have at around 3 a.m. by myself.

“And also, while we were thinking about what would become Second Dinner, what we would do is we’d work all day at Blizzard, and then we’d go home, take care of our families and be like ‘All right, meet up at 10.’ And we’d have second dinner and dream about the future.”

Since “Marvel Snap” came out in mid-October, players have asked a lot of questions about the game on social media. Some have tweeted that after rank 80, it feels like “Marvel Snap” gives more advantages to players who spent real money.

“If it was pay-to-win, then anybody should be able to win. And that’s just not the case, you have to be very good at the game,” Brode said.

He added that the competition heats up after rank 80, and that’s “just the nature of competition.”

The odds of getting a card from a collector cache is about one in four, he said, and other variants and cosmetics that fit into the cache are to “surprise and delight” the player. On the back end, players are matched up in duels based on their collection size, and as they play and get more advanced, they’ll be matched with players of similar skills.

Finally, the “Marvel Snap” developers reacted to The Post’s recent article about avoiding bathroom perils when playing games like “Marvel Snap” on the toilet.

“ ‘Snap’ saves you from hemorrhoids,” Chu said. “The Washington Post said so.”

Chris Evans, Alba Baptista hold hands in first PDA photos

Chris Evans and his girlfriend, Alba Baptista, were spotted holding hands just hours after news broke that the pair have been dating “for over a year.”

In pictures exclusively obtained by Page Six, the Marvel star, 41, and Portuguese actress, 25, tried to stay under the radar while going on a stroll through Central Park Thursday.

The incognito couple held on tightly to one another as they made their way through the crowded streets while wearing matching sunglasses and face masks.

Both actors kept things casual with Evans rocking grey sweatpants, a black shirt and a black hat, while Baptista opted for bright red leggings and a beige turtleneck sweater.

The “Captain America” star and his new leading lady seemed to notice the paparazzi at one point because they quickly bowed their heads and let go of one another on their way out of the park.

Despite their shyness around the cameras, a source told People, “They are in love and Chris has never been happier. His family and friends all adore her.”

Nonetheless, Evans has had a hard time keeping his feelings off social media because he left a flirty comment on the actress’s Instagram post Wednesday.

While promoting her upcoming Portuguese film, “A Dream In Paris,” the “Gray Man” actor commented a clapping hands emoji and melting face emoji — racking up more than 2,900 “likes” in her comments section.

While Evans may be the “Sexiest Man Alive,” Baptista has an equally impressive list of accomplishments.

The “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” star speaks five languages and has done “an extensive amount of humanitarian work” at an orphanage in Cambodia.

Despite their 16-year age difference, Evans thinks his age serves as an advantage when it comes to dating.

“You spend a lot of time learning what’s been helpful and what hasn’t been,” he told People ahead of their latest issue.

Evans is reportedly “happier” than he has ever been.

Losing In Marvel Snap? Ditch These Cards ASAP!

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

If you, like me John Walker, are still fathoming your way through the lower echelons of Marvel Snap, there’s a good chance there are cards you’re clinging on to because they were working so well for you. However, you’re now starting to lose more often, wondering what went wrong. The answer is: Kill your darlings.

With the help of my colleague Zack Zwiezen—who has been playing the game for some time now—we’ve come up with a list of cards that you might want to cut from your decks.

Now, let’s be clear: Neither of us is saying these cards are totally useless, or that keeping them in your deck is always a bad idea. It’s just, they’re the ones that felt so good early on that you might not have been able to bring yourself to acknowledge their weaknesses, and are holding you back from experimenting with more interesting combinations. Be bold, be brave, and let these babies go.

And remember you can always add them back later if you experiment too much and end up with a stinker deck! Anyway, let’s start cutting some cards!

Quicksilver

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

As Kotaku has previously broken down, Quicksilver was developer Second Dinner’s brilliant solution to entirely removing the concept of mulligans from their deckbuilding card game. Guaranteeing a 1-cost card in your hand at the start of every game ensures you can always play in the first round, every time, and add 2 power to the board right away. Which, at first, felt vital. Except, the more you play, the more you realize that being able to play in the first round isn’t actually all that important.

Chances are, you’re not going to be placing down anything game-changing that first turn. And indeed by not playing in round one, you fend off other 1-cost cards like Elektra. You can even obnoxiously opt out of playing a 1-cost you might have in your hand in Round 1, just so you can play two of them more tactically in Round 2. Again, for example, Elektra!

And, as we’ll get to below, decks that opt for as many 1-cost cards as possible will get increasingly weak as you climb the ranks, meaning Quicksilver’s lack of any further abilities quickly makes him more of a burden than a boon.

Uatu

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

When you first stumble upon Uatu, he feels like a secret hack, a card offering you special insight unavailable to anyone yet to find him. His ability to show you the properties of unrevealed locations feels like something that lets you plan ahead and make psychic moves your opponent can’t predict. And, to some extent, on some level, he sort of does.

Except, that won’t happen nearly often enough to justify Uatu taking up a valuable slot in your 12-card deck. The issue lies in the number of conditions that need to be right for him to actually prove helpful. Rather obviously, you need the luck of drawing him early enough to work. Unless you get him in the first or second round, Uatu’s ability is pretty useless. Secondly, you need to be playing a game with locations where prior knowledge is actually of use.

So many locations have properties where foreknowledge is of very little value. Finding out that when it reveals you’ll get a random card added to your hand, a random card taken from it, or a 12-power card added to both sides…it’s very rare that this will be vital information to you. Yes, there are absolutely circumstances where it’s great, where knowing each card will get 5+ power when played there means you can load up and dominate where your opponent might not know to. But does that happen frequently enough for Uatu to remain a vital card? Really, no.

Hulk

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

This one is hard. But listen: There are better and more interesting ways for a big finish. Hulk’s there from the start to give you that satisfaction of playing a ridiculous 12-power card on those Pool 1 bots. But he’s baby food, and you’re ready for solids.

Sure, you’ve nothing else in your deck that offers that much power. It’s simple logic. But Hulk’s simplicity is the issue. Using up all your energy in Round 6 on one card that does nothing other than add a bunch of power means you’re missing out on much more fun big finishes. Never mind that Shang-Chi, available from Collection Level 222, can obliterate him with his “Destroy all enemy cards at this location that have 9 or more Power.”

But there are so many cards that do more interesting things in the final round, especially if you have a themed deck. The trick is whether or not your Hulk is serving a specific purpose, or just there because the number is big. But consider cards like Odin, who adds 8 power, but also refires all the On Reveal abilities of the other cards at the location. That means you can see White Tiger putting out another 7-power card onto another location, bringing her total contribution to 15, while at the same time retriggering Gamora’s additional +5 power if the opponent plays a card there. That puts Gamora up to a total of 17, even without taking into account a possible third card at the location, just playing Odin has increased our power by 20. Take that, Hulk.

America Chavez

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

When you first get this card you might be excited. America is a 6-cost/9-power card that always shows up on turn six, which is usually the last turn of most Marvel Snap games. And yeah, it’s nice knowing a powerful 9-power card is definitely going to show up at the end of your match. But this also means she’s not hanging around in your hand, meaning she can’t get buffed or randomly tossed into the field early on. This may or may not be a problem depending on the deck you’re running; if your entire deck is constructed around her showing up at the end, that’s one thing. But consider the options carefully.

While adding 9-power at the end of a match can be useful, you’ll quickly encounter games as you rank up where 9-power just isn’t enough to win back a zone or lock something down. Sometimes, you may even want to trick your opponent into thinking you’re going to play a big card, only to make a more modest play on a zone that you can win with a smaller number without invoking the wrath of Shang. And unlike the Hulk who is very strong, America is only sort of strong. In a specific deck built around buffing, she can work, but there are better 6 and even 5-cost cards to swap in instead.

Domino

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

Let’s just toss this on here too, while we are talking about America Chavez and Quicksilver. Like those cards, Domino has a unique ability that means she is guaranteed to end up in your hand on turn two. And as a 2-cost/3-power, she seems useful as a follow-up to Quicksilver on turn one. And early on, you can definitely win with Domino. But eventually, you’ll need to get over these cards.

It’s hard, I know, but while giving them up means you give up the consistency of always knowing what’s coming on turns one, two, and six, you are also giving up three slots in your small 12-card deck to characters with no other purpose. They don’t buff, boost, move, kill, destroy, or do anything useful like that. Again, in certain decks, these cards can be useful. But there are just so many better cards that you could use instead of Domino, Quicksilver, and America. Say goodbye to consistency and hello to chaos. It’s the Marvel Snap way.

Mantis

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

Mantis, like the other Guardians of the Galaxy-related characters, has a reveal ability that pops when your opponent plays a card in that location on the same turn it’s played. But unlike Gamora, Star-Lord, or Rocket, Mantis doesn’t get a power boost, instead drawing a card from the opposing player’s deck. This is fun and chaotic, which we support! Snap is more fun when things are hard to predict and wild. But this becomes far less useful in most situations pretty quickly, unless you happen to be running a deck predicated on amassing as many cards as possible. For example, a Devil Dinosaur deck could use Mantis at the start. But otherwise, she may not be useful to you if it’s not an intentional choice.

The number of times people play Mantis, get a card, and then never use that card because it doesn’t sync up with their deck’s synergy is high. And that’s if your opponent plays a card that turn and you guess the location right. If you don’t do that, then Mantis is a crappy 1-cost/2-power paperweight just begging to be killed by Elektra or worse, left there with no way for you to remove it, taking up valuable real estate. So, yeah, ditch Mantis. And if you are screaming “Well, she is a part of my Zoo Deck!” right now, here’s more bad news…

Zoo Decks

Image: Marvel / Second Dinner / Kotaku

The “Zoo Deck” was certainly one of the most popular meta decks of Snap’s early days, but in the face of the more common addition of Killmonger to players’ decks, it’s now proving a liability.

A Zoo Deck is a community-given name for decks that put together a lot of low-cost cards, especially 1-cost cards, which often have animal art on them. (Not often enough to justify the name, but that’s the name they’ve gotten anyway.) Advocates celebrate that they allow you to play multiple cards in later rounds, surprising players who rely on hefty 5 and 6-cost cards, like some sort of cheeky rascal scampering between the angry giant’s legs. Except, because of Killmonger, they’re pretty much useless.

Killmonger does appear to be an incredible OP card, although he can only be picked up by players who’ve reached Collection Level 462. At just 3-cost, with 3 power, it’s a card that can be played from round 3 onward, and devastatingly takes out every single 1-cost card from the board. Yours and theirs. And people in Pool 2 are reporting seeing it showing up a lot. The effects are brutal. Oh, and Zoo Decks can also get beat badly by a Scorpion, which lowers the attack power of all the cards in your hand by one, which can easily cost you a close match when most 1-cost cards are low in power. So yeah, Zoo Decks are fun…but not worth it later on.
