YouTuber Confesses To Being Gaming Industry Leaker, Gets Caught

Image: Ubisoft / Dan Allen Gaming / Kotaku

It turns out a Twitter account called TheRealInsider, the latest in a crop of leakers posing as gaming industry insiders, was actually run by YouTuber Dan Allen Gaming. The account had convinced many in the scene that it was the real deal after accurately teasing which new Assassin’s Creed games would be revealed at Ubisoft’s 2022 gaming showcase. But it now appears Allen was simply leaking embargoed, privileged information he received as an influencer. “I’m sorry to everyone for my actions,” he wrote on Twitter before deleting both accounts.

Allen has 189,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel where he posts guides, interviews with voice actors, and playthroughs of everything from Multiversus to Elden Ring. No one suspected him of secretly leaking industry marketing materials he received under embargo until he accidentally responded to someone asking TheRealInsider a question on Twitter as his main Dan Allen Gaming account. After that, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier combed through past tweets from both accounts and discovered plenty of overlap.

“If this is legit — and looking through both accounts, they sure seem to tweet about the same games around the same time — it would explain how this ‘real insider’ knew the AC codenames,” Schreier wrote in a Discord comment. “He broke the embargo himself.”

But people didn’t have to speculate for long though. Allen admitted it shortly after and posted an apology. “I’m sorry to everyone for my actions,” it read. “I’m ashamed and disappointed in myself. I’ll be taking some time to reflect on my poor decisions, which will never occur again. To everyone that has supported me over the years, I’m truely [sic] sorry I let you down.”

There’s a difference between when a journalist uncovers information they consider to be of public interest and presents it to the world, and when a person agrees to an embargo or an NDA, and a company shares information under the assumption that the details won’t be disclosed until a specified date and time.

TheRealInsider’s biggest claim to fame was the Ubisoft leak, teasing the Japan open world RPG called Project Red and several other Assassins’ Creed games four days before the official showcase, and before they were reported on by TryHardGuides and, later that same day, Bloomberg. As Axios’ Stephen Totilo points out, that was the same day Ubisoft briefed press on the showcase (Kotaku did not participate). More often, however, the account has teased upcoming things like hands-on previews, as in the case of Square Enix’s Forspoken. This track record recently turned TheRealInsider into one of the fixtures of the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit, a popular watering hole for fans to speculate about upcoming releases based on industry reports and, more commonly, random tweets.

Allen’s outing comes within a week of the massive Grand Theft Auto VI leak and a Nintendo Direct where many rumored games once again failed to materialize. It’s spurred a renewed debate about the value and ethics of leaking gaming industry secrets, which can run the gamut from where the next Fallout will take place to whether a studio has been mistreating its employees. Plenty of people are sick of the rumor mongering, and developers and marketing specialists are understandably not fans of seeing their work discussed online outside of their control, especially when it revolves around incomplete information or inaccurate information. Does that mean it will end any time soon? Consider me doubtful.

Coincidently, the first outlet to break the news about TheRealInsider was a new publication by industry insider Tom Henderson called, what else, Insider Gaming. While some were critical of the name, which is even invoked on the about page where sources are encouraged to “become an insider” by reaching out, the site immediately broke after launching yesterday when too many people tried to visit it at once. Responded one apparent fan, “Fuck criticism, see you on the inside.”

Update: 9/20/22 10:00 p.m. ET: Allen hasn’t returned to Twitter but he has posted a five minute apology video on his YouTube channel. In it he apologizes profusely to fans, colleagues, and others, and explains that some of the supposed leaks were nothing more than educated guesses or made up altogether.

“I mentioned Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid Remake and I can say that there was no NDA there because it’s all bullshit, it’s all lies,” Allen says. He also mentions that a tease of God of War Ragnarök before the most recent Sony State of Play was, which was later proven accurate, was based purely on Kratos voice actor Christopher Judge retweeting the stream link prior to the showcase.

“I’ve lost industry friends, I’ve lost relationships—personal, business-wise, opportunities—all for you know that five seconds of fame and I take full responsibility,” Allen says. “All the hate I’ve received on Twitter, it’s all just, but I just had to delete it because I’ve just never experienced that barrage of hate before—and again, totally justified—but I just had to step away from that because I’m just, you know, mentally it’s not great to see all those things about you being put out there and I haven’t experienced that before.”

Update: 9/21/22 3:03 p.m. ET: A spokesperson for Ubisoft declined to comment specifically on its relationship with Allen, but provided the following statement more generally:

We regularly provide access and information on our games under NDA to trusted partners. When that trust is compromised, or information is leaked by an individual, it’s not only damaging and demoralizing to our teams, but it takes away from an exciting reveal moment and experience for our players. While we won’t speak on an individual case, we do take these matters seriously and will manage accordingly.

Leaker Reveals Images From New ‘Silent Hill’ Game?

Remedy has dropped a whack of Alan Wake related info as part of the game’s 12th anniversary. Along with news on Alan Wake 2, Alan Wake Remastered will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. In addition, for those who have been waiting on that Alan Wake TV series, Remedy has finally snagged a deal to bring the series to fruition.

For starters, Epic Games Publishing and Remedy will release Alan Wake Remastered for the Switch via Nintendo eShop this fall. The Switch version will be digital-only, and run natively on the hardware. More info about the port will be released in the coming months.

As for the Alan Wake TV series, Remedy has teamed up with AMC to finally bring the series to life. According to Remedy’s communications director, Thomas Puha, the adaptation still has “a long way to go” before production begins, but it’s at least a good starting point.

Lastly, Remedy took the opportunity on Alan Wake‘s 12th anniversary to drop a new video, as well as new concept art for the upcoming Alan Wake 2! “Everything with Alan Wake 2 development is going really well. We are deep in production, have a lot of material, and a great deal of the game is playable,” said Remedy’s Sam Lake.

However, there’s a bit of a snag for those hoping to see more of the game later this summer. “But we’ve been talking for the past couple of months and have come to the decision here at Remedy, along with our wonderful publisher Epic Games, that we will not be showing anything big this summer.”

“To create a proper, polished demo or a trailer takes a lot of effort, and it’s several months of work that could take away from development,” Lake continues. “We feel that we have momentum going, and we want to make sure we are creating the best, and first, survival horror game for Remedy. We don’t want to take the team away from that focus, so we’re going to keep going and making a great game experience, and unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer for a demo and trailer.”

In the meantime, Remedy has revealed the aforementioned concept art, which you can see below. Alan Wake 2 is currently in development for 2023.

iPhone 14 Pro leaker just tipped full specs — and a price hike

September is still months away, but that hasn’t stopped rumors and leaks from gathering momentum on the iPhone 14 models. Now tipster Shadow_Leak has tweeted a full set of alleged specs for the iPhone 14 Pro along with a possible price increase.

The screen size for the iPhone 14 Pro is reportedly a 6.06-inch 120Hz OLED screen. That seems small to us, as well as display analyst Ross Young (via Notebookcheck) who says to expect a slight size increase instead.

The iPhone 14 Pro will reportedly be powered by Apple’s A16 Bionic chipset, which we’ve heard about before and seems legit. The Pro lineup has always had an edge with its cameras over the other models and this time it seems like Apple will focus more on the megapixels. The iPhone 14 Pro is said to have three cameras — leading with a massive 48MP main camera that’s up from 12MP on the iPhone 13 Pro, and this would be paired with another two 12MP lenses.

We’ve written before why a 48MP sensor for the iPhone 14 Pro could be a big deal, and there’s two primary benefits. First, Apple could squeeze more details out of shots due to a process called pixel binning. Second, this sensor could enable 8K video recording, which would be a first for iPhones.

The leak also mentions the Pro will come equipped with 6GB of RAM, not 8GB like early rumors had first mentioned. In addition, the storage will reportedly start at 128GB and go up to 1TB. A design detail is also mentioned — it looks like the traditional notch will be replaced by pill shaped notch on the top with the screen almost wrapping around it.

Other rumored iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 14 differences include a telephoto lens for the Pro models once more along with a 120Hz ProMotion display. We could also see the inclusion of USB-C charging on the iPhone 14 Pro models in order to accommodate faster transfer speeds.

So how much will these premium specs cost you? Earlier touted to be priced at $999 like the iPhone 13 Pro, recent iPhone 14 price rumors have mentioned the 14 Pro will be priced at $1,099. And Shadow_Leak corroborates previous rumors of an imminent price hike by $100.

This time it looks like the iPhone 14 lineup is up for a major overhaul. The iPhone mini might be dead because of sales for smaller phones slowing down, and replaced with a new iPhone 14 Max model.

There’s a lot of speculation flying around right now, so be sure to check out our iPhone 14 hub for all the latest leaks and rumors.

Leaker reveals which iPhones will be phased out after iPhone 14 arrives

Apple had discontinued the iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus in 2020, and now, it’s considering phasing out the two remaining iPhone 11 models.

This scoop comes from LeaksApplePro (via iDrop News). Apple is yet to finalize the decision and it will largely hinge on the iPhone SE.
The iPhone SE 2022 came out last month and although it packs the new A15 Bionic chip and offers 5G connectivity, it’s proving to be a tough sell because of its old-school design. The phone starts at $429 and the company wouldn’t want its sales to be cannibalized by one of the older models.
iDrop News says that there has been an uptick in the demand for the iPhone 11 after the launch of the iPhone SE, probably because people would rather spend $70 more for a better-looking phone with two cameras and a reasonably fast chip instead of getting the SE just for the sake of 5G, which isn’t all that useful right now.

The iPhone 12, which starts at $699, will likely not be discontinued, because it’s doing well to this day and is allegedly also cheaper to manufacture. The Cupertino giant may reduce its price to $599 after releasing the iPhone 14. It’s not known whether the iPhone 12 mini will also stay. The report also says that the iPhone 13 will continue to be sold.

Leaker that correctly leaked info for Mortal Kombat 11 reveals the name of a returning character in Mortal Kombat 12

We currently don’t have any official word on what NetherRealm Studios’ next project is, but all rumors seem to be pointing towards it being Mortal Kombat 12 rather than Injustice 3, breaking the pattern set by NetherRealm Studios. Post-launch development for Mortal Kombat 11 was wrapped up last year for the purpose of beginning work on whatever this next project is.

Before Mortal Kombat 11 was officially released, a self-proclaimed leaker known as “r00000r” was able to correctly call unrevealed details about Mortal Kombat 11. It seems that r00000r has returned once more to name a character from Mortal Kombat lore that we haven’t heard in a good while. Based on r00000r’s wording, it’s heavily implied that this fighter will be playable in Mortal Kombat 12. Keep in mind that we’ll revealing a potential leak beyond this point.

“Ah, Reiko’s back,” suddenly said r00000r in a random GameFAQS thread. “See you next year.”

Notably, Reiko hasn’t been playable or even at all relevant since Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Reiko’s only other playable appearance was in Mortal Kombat 4 (and Gold), the game he debuted in.

As such, Reiko isn’t exactly the most popular fighter in Mortal Kombat history. Stating that Reiko is “back” would certainly be an interesting choice if all of this was just made up.

Due to Reiko’s ending in Mortal Kombat Gold, there was a fan theory that suggested that Reiko was actually Shao Kahn. However, this theory was eventually proven false when both Shao Kahn and Reiko appeared as playable characters in Mortal Kombat Armageddon.

It seems that Reiko has developed into something of a fan of Shao Kahn’s since then. There’s a heavy implication that Reiko desires to become a successor to Shao Kahn.

Reiko has served as a general in Shao Kahn’s army and has also been part of Shinnok’s Brotherhood of Shadow. His moveset has consisted of using throwing stars as projectiles, teleports, flip kicks, shoulder charges and he even uses a mockup of Shao Kahn’s hammer.

Going back to r00000r’s track record with Mortal Kombat 11 leaks, he was previously able to correctly reveal details about Cetrion (newcomer), Kollector (newcomer), Noob Saibot and Shang Tsung.

With regards to Cetrion, it was apparently stated by r00000r that she was a “new female monster character” whose name started with “Cet” and ended with “n.” Of course, we already knew about the “Cet” part due to the beta data mine leak.

As of right now, it’s currently unknown what r00000r means when they say “see you next year.” Are the developers not going to reveal Mortal Kombat 12 until 2023 or is the game simply releasing in 2023?

Ultimately though, we have to take every leak with a grain of salt. It’s important to remember that although there are plenty of signs that indicate that NetherRealm Studios is working on Mortal Kombat 12, we don’t know for sure what their next project even is.

We’ll just have to see how things play out. Until then, we’re playing the waiting game with official information about NetherRealm Studios’ next project.

Pokemon Leaker Teases Something Big Amid Pokemon Legends: Arceus DLC Rumors

A well-known Pokemon leaker over on Twitter is teasing something big following the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus on Nintendo Switch, and amidst speculation and rumors of there being DLC in the works for the Switch exclusive. The rumors and speculation are largely fueled by datamining leaks that indicate Game Freak has further plans for the biggest release of 2022 so far, and it looks like fans may get their first glimpse of these plans relatively soon. Whether the game will get as much DLC as Pokemon Sword and Shield, which was added to with two meaty expansions, remains to be seen, but when you combine the early signs with the game’s success, the door is left wide open for Game Freak and co. to add a lot more to the title.

To this end, a prominent Pokemon leaker is teasing that “something [is] coming in April.” What this is, we don’t know, but many Pokemon fans think it’s a DLC tease, though others have thrown around the rumored Detective Pikachu 2, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl DLC, and Gen-9 as possibilities. The most former is a possibility, but it’s not clear how the image below would be teasing that. Meanwhile, the middle option is probably the most likely possibility after Pokemon Legends: Arceus DLC. And then there are the Gen-9 shouts, which while hopeful, are definitely off the mark. Gen-9 is probably a 2023 game.

Below, you can check out the tease for yourself:

As always, we will keep you updated as the situation progresses. This includes both any comments from any official parties and further teases from the leaker above.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is available via the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED. For more coverage on not just Pokemon Legends: Arceus, but all things Pokemon, click here.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is easily the strongest Pokemon game made in recent memory and should provide unforgettable memories that rival the first time a player first encountered a favorite Pokemon or conquered their first Pokemon Champion fight,” reads a snippet from our official review of the game. “It’s a must-buy Pokemon game destined to land on many ‘top games of the year’ lists and should bring countless new and lapsed fans to the franchise.

Arceus Leaker Drops DLC Tease

Pokemon Legends: Arceus has been out on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED for roughly a week, and according to most, it’s one of the best Pokemon games in years. Thus, it should come as no surprise that it’s selling extremely well and it is reviewing well. And like Pokemon Sword and Shield, it looks like it will be bolstered with DLC releases. How do we know this? Because of the game’s files and the dataminers that have leaked the content of these files.

Nintendo Leaker Suggests Pricing Of Switch Online’s Expansion Pack Could Be Tied To “Licensing Costs”

Image: Nintendo Life

Nintendo yesterday lifted the lid on the price of its new ‘Expansion Pack’ for the Switch Online service, and if you’ve seen our reader poll about the subject, it might be a bit too expensive for some.

So, what’s the go, and why is Nintendo charging the prices it is for this new add-on – featuring a library of Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive games, along with access to the new Animal Crossing DLC? According to NWR contributor and proven Nintendo leaker, Emily Rogers, the “likely” reason and “main culprit” is believed to be licensing costs.

In fact, Sega apparently wasn’t a “big fan” of the Wii’s Virtual Console service back in the day due to the “low sales” and various other issues, so Nintendo has supposedly had fork out a fair bit of cash for the Mega Drive/Genesis library this time around:

“Licensing costs are likely main culprit behind NSO expansion’s bold price. I heard Sega were paid very, very well. This is notable because Sega weren’t big fans of Wii’s VC service due to low sales, revenue split, and lack of marketing. Hence why Sega didn’t support Wii U VC.

The money spending doesn’t stop there – with Rogers further noting in a follow-up tweet how games on the same service from other companies would also need to be licensed, and it all adds up! And then there’s Nintendo’s arrangement with Rare and Microsoft for Banjo- Kazooie on the Nintendo 64 library…

“3rd parties titles (Konami, Capcom) are also being licensed for Genesis NSO. So the licensing costs begin to add up after awhile. And who knows what licensing agreement/arrangement Nintendo had with Rare/Microsoft…”

Image: Sega / Nintendo

Rogers has previously played a role in certain Nintendo leaks such as Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and most recently provided accurate details about the Switch OLED model prior to its release. Do you think she’s on the money here? Do you think “licensing costs” are the main reason behind the “bold price” of the NSO expansion pack?

As always, leave your own thoughts down in the comments.
