Court documents show Britt Reid was drinking at Chiefs facility before DUI incident

Getty Images

The NFL generally has tried to keep a lid on the fact that former Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid had been drinking at the team facility prior to an automobile crash that left a young girl seriously and permanently injured in February 2020. Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports reports that court documents show Reid had been drinking at work.

The evidence came from Reid himself, in responses to questions from his lawyer last month that eliminate the possibility he had left the facility and consumed alcohol elsewhere. The sentencing memorandum, filed by Reid’s lawyer last Friday, makes it even more clear that the accident happened shortly after he left the facility, with no stops in between.

Those facts are irrelevant to the crime for which Reid will be sentenced on Friday. But they are highly pertinent to the question of what others knew and when they knew it about Reid violating league rules regarding the presence and consumption of alcohol on team premises.

Wetzel lists the various questions that haven’t been, and may never be, answered by the NFL or the Chiefs: “What was happening that day at the facility? Was Reid drinking alone? With others? Did he hide it? Was it out in the open? Did anyone worry about a life-long abuser using alcohol? Is drinking on the job prevalent there?”

It’s a tragic situation for all involved. But it possibly could have been prevented. Britt Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, had a history of substance abuse. The timing of the incident underscores the significance of an issue that surely created a very real distraction for the Chiefs, only three nights before Super Bowl LV.

Because of the pandemic, the Chiefs didn’t travel to Tampa for the Super Bowl until the Friday before the game. The crash happened on Thursday night.

Will the Chiefs or the NFL ever provide public answers to these questions? Last November, the Chiefs reached an agreement to provide the family of Ariel Young, who was five years old at the time, “with world-class medical care and long-term financial stability.” Those terms undoubtedly were the subject of a settlement as to any claims that could have been made against the Chiefs.

Without a lawsuit that would have played out in open court, there’s no mechanism for getting to the truth. The NFL and the Chiefs have no reason to disclose the actual facts, or to answer the tough questions.

As Wetzel writes, “The story will likely drift off into history. That’s how the NFL wants it.”

That’s not the way it should be. But there’s simply no way to change the way things are, on this specific issue.

Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pleads guilty to DUI, sentenced to three years probation

Comment

Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and causing injury stemming from a May car crash in Northern California.

Judge Joseph Solga’s sentence called for Pelosi to serve five days of jail time, but he received four days of jail credit — two for time already served and two for conduct, according to court records. He was sentenced to three years of probation and must complete eight hours of a court-ordered work program.

Pelosi also was ordered to pay a standard DUI fine of $1,723 and a $150 standard restitution fine. He did not appear in court for his sentencing but was represented by his attorney, Amanda Bevins. Bevins said Pelosi had no statement on the case.

Pelosi, 82, was arrested at the time of the May 28 crash, and records show he was booked on one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and one count of driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher causing injury.

Pelosi changed his plea after originally pleading not guilty during an arraignment hearing this month. He originally faced two charges but, under the agreement reached Tuesday, only pleaded guilty to one — violating California Vehicle Code 23153(a).

The crash occurred in California’s wine country, near state Route 29 and Oakville Cross Road, according to a copy of the complaint obtained by Fox News. Officers at the scene said Pelosi was found in the driver’s seat of his Porsche, while the driver of an SUV was standing outside his own vehicle; both vehicles sustained “major collision damage,” according to the complaint.

The complaint alleges that Pelosi had red and watery eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, and that he showed “signs of impairment” in field sobriety tests. The complaint also alleged that when officers asked Pelosi for his identification, he provided his driver’s license and a card for the “11-99 Foundation,” a charity that supports California Highway Patrol families.

The SUV driver was not named, and both he and Pelosi declined medical treatment, according to the complaint. The document alleges that the SUV driver later began experiencing shoulder and neck pain, headaches and difficulty lifting things with his right arm.

According to Bevins, Pelosi had been previously ordered to pay the other driver involved in the crash $4,927.53 in restitution fines directly, which he has already done. Bevins said the court on Tuesday reserved restitution if the other driver has any additional requests.

A spokesperson for the House speaker did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Norcross police arrested Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna on DUI charges.

According to Gwinnett County jail records, Ozuna was arrested and book around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning on driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane charges.

Channel 2 Action News received the following statement from the Atlanta Braves:

The DUI arrest is the latest legal trouble for the Braves outfielder.

In May 2021, Ozuna was accused of assaulting and strangling his estranged wife inside his Sandy Springs home. She told police that she and her husband were having an argument over infidelity before he choked her and threw her against a wall, according to court documents.

He was originally arrested on one felony charge of aggravated assault by strangulation, however prosecutors dropped the felony charge in July. Ozuna still faced misdemeanor charges of family violence battery and simple assault.

In September, Ozuna agreed to complete a state’s pre-trial diversion program, which allows offenders to complete requirements prior to a court date in exchange for their case being completely dismissed. Under the agreement, there was a list of conditions that Ozuna had to complete within six months, including a family violence intervention program.

Major League Baseball retroactively suspended the outfielder for 20 games without pay while he was on administrative leave during the investigation. Ozuna rejoined the team this season.

Ariana Biermann has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The 20-year-old daughter of Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kim Zolciak-Biermann was booked at Forsyth County Jail in the early hours of Saturday morning after she and on-and-off boyfriend Hudson McLeroy were arrested at around 1 a.m., according to public records obtained by PEOPLE.

She was charged with three misdemeanors: driving under the influence of alcohol, improper/erratic lane change and underage possession/purchase of alcohol. Biermann has since been released on $5,120 bond.

McLeroy, 20, was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, as well as allegedly furnishing alcohol to a minor and violating the conditions of his limited driving permit.

“Ariana was involved in a minor fender bender. When police arrived on scene, the investigating officer immediately initiated an investigation for DUI. Despite Ariana’s constant invocation that she was upset and anxious from the minor accident, the officer incorrectly concluded she was impaired by alcohol,” attorney Justin Spizman of Hawkins Spizman law firm told PEOPLE. “That was not the case. She wholly denies these allegations and intends to fight these charges because she is not guilty of them.”

The pair began dating in high school; at that time Biermann shared a sweet photo of the two of them in their formal finest before attending their homecoming dance in Oct. 2018, just days before her 17th birthday.

Zolciak-Biermann expressed her approval at the time, writing in the comments: “Where does the time go?? My angel @arianabiermann is headed to Homecoming with @hudson.mcleroy. Are they not the cutest!!?! They are only a few hours apart and will both turn 17 this week!!”

Fans have speculated that Biermann and McLeroy are back together after she posted a photo last month with a dark silhouette of herself kissing someone. “Glimpse of us,” she wrote in the caption.

Former NFL RB Marshawn Lynch arrested on suspicion of DUI in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch was arrested Tuesday in Las Vegas on suspicion of driving impaired, according to police.

Officers stopped the vehicle that Lynch, 36, was driving at about 7:30 a.m., concluded that he was impaired and detained him, police said in a statement. Lynch was booked into the Las Vegas City Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Authorities did not disclose whether Lynch was tested for driving impaired and did not immediately respond to an email message seeking additional details.

It was unclear if Lynch had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. Jail records did not show one listed for him.

Lynch played 12 season the NFL, mostly with the Seattle Seahawks.

He was a five-time Pro Bowler and had 10,413 career rushing yards and 85 rushing touchdowns from 2007 to ’19 with the Seahawks, the Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raiders.

Lynch was arrested for DUI in 2012, but pleaded down to the lesser charge of reckless driving when the case was resolved in 2014.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Pelosi’s husband pleads not guilty to DUI charges

His lawyer, Amanda Bevins, appeared on his behalf at an arraignment in Napa County Superior Court in California and entered a plea of not guilty to the charges, which were brought after Pelosi was arrested on May 28 after having been involved in a nighttime collision.

Pelosi, who did not appear in court on Wednesday, will remain free on his own recognizance and is due back in court on August 23.

The 82-year-old had been attempting to cross SR-29 in late May when his 2021 Porsche was hit by a 2014 Jeep traveling northbound on the road, according to a collision report from the California Highway Patrol. The vehicles “sustained major collision damage,” according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint noted that Pelosi was operating his vehicle “while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and a drug and under their combined influence.” Authorities said in the complaint that when asked for ID at the scene, Pelosi handed the officers both his license and an “11-99 Foundation” card. The foundation is the California Highway Patrol charity, which “provides emergency assistance to California Highway Patrol employees and scholarships to their children,” according to its website.

The punishment for the misdemeanor charges “includes up to five years of probation, a minimum of five days in jail, installation of an ignition interlock device, fines and fees, completion of a court ordered drinking driver class and other terms, according to a release from the Napa County District Attorney’s Office.

Pelosi completed sobriety tests at the time of the incident “showing signs of impairment,” according to a criminal complaint. The criminal complaint noted that California Highway Patrol determined Pelosi “was the proximate cause of the collision.”

A native of San Francisco, he has been married to Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, since 1963. The two have five children.
