4 Connecticut cops in Las Vegas crash; 1 dead, 1 facing DUI charge: reports

A Connecticut police officer was being held on $100,000 bail Saturday, accused of being an impaired driver following a Las Vegas crash that left a fellow officer dead, according to reports.

New Haven police Officer Robert Ferraro, 34, a six-year member of the force, was at the wheel of a 2020 Rolls Royce with three other police officers and two women as passengers when the crash occurred around 4 a.m. Friday, FOX 5 of Las Vegas reported.

The vehicle went out of control and struck an occupied car that was in a private driveway, then continued along the road and struck utility poles, landscaping and a fire hydrant, FOX 5 reported.

CALIFORNIA TROOPERS ARREST WOMAN FOR DUI WHILE TESLA REPORTEDLY ON AUTOPILOT

The Rolls Royce eventually flipped over, settling upright after a front-seat passenger was ejected. That passenger, identified as New Haven police Officer Joshua Castellano, 35, a seven-year veteran of the department, was later pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the station.

New Haven police Chief Renee Dominguez paid tribute to the late officer at a Saturday news conference, FOX 61 of Hartford reported.

“In the academy, you knew that Josh had the thing, the thing that’s not teachable,” Dominguez said. “He knew everybody to the point that we received a text message from a woman who lives in Westville Manor, his walking beat initially, saying that her heart was broken and calling him by the nickname that they had given him out in Westville Manor. He did not only touch the men and women in this police department but the community as well.”

Ferraro faces a charge of driving under the influence, resulting in death, and reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm, the report said. His next court appearance was set for Tuesday.

He was released until then on condition that he stay out of trouble, avoid alcohol and wear a monitoring device, the New Haven Register reported.

The driver was placed on leave with pay by the New Haven Police Department, Dominguez told reporters, according to the Register.

The two other New Haven police officers in the car were identified as Matthew Borges and John Truhart, and the women, who were not identified, were from San Antonio, Texas, the Register reported.

Neither Borges nor Truhart will be placed on leave, the New Haven police chief said.

An investigation into the crash by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was continuing, FOX 61 of Hartford reported.

Mets acting GM Zack Scott arrested on DUI charge in New York

Getty Images

New York Mets acting general manager Zack Scott was arrested Tuesday morning in White Plains, New York on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to the New York Post. Scott “refused to give blood or submit to a breathalyzer” after being spotted sleeping in his car, but he failed a field sobriety test, White Plains police captain James Spencer told the Post.

The Mets have subsequently announced that Scott will not be on the road as part of the team’s next trip. Further, the Mets released the following statement on Wednesday shortly after the Post‘s report came out: “We were surprised and deeply disappointed to learn this morning about an alleged DUI involving Zack Scott. We take this matter very seriously.”

The Post‘s report notes that Scott is due back in White Plains City Court on Thursday. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Scott attended a fundraiser at owner Steve Cohen’s house in Connecticut on the night of the arrest.

Scott initially joined the Mets as an assistant general manager last December after spending nearly two decades with the Boston Red Sox organization. He took over the general manager position in January once the Mets fired Jared Porter following an ESPN report that Porter had harassed a female reporter in part by sending unsolicited, explicit photographs.

Scott’s arrest is the latest and most serious blemish in a week full of bad headlines for the Mets. Just a few days ago, the Mets were embroiled in a controversy stemming from Javier Báez, Francisco Lindor, and Kevin Pillar using a “thumbs down” motion to jeer booing fans. Báez apologized for his part in the controversy on Tuesday, and the Mets subsequently won both ends of a doubleheader against the Miami Marlins.

The Mets entered Wednesday with 65-67 record on the season, putting them 5 1/2 games back in both the National League East and the hunt for the National League’s second wild card spot.

Johnny Damon had 4 times legal limit after DUI arrest, during which he voiced support for Trump and Blue Lives Matter

Damon was initially charged with one count of driving under the influence and one count of resisting an officer without violence, according to an arrest affidavit. Court documents show that he pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges, and the resisting charge was dropped.

According to the arrest affidavit, his breathalyzer test was at 0.30% two hours after police first stopped him, nearly four times the state’s 0.08% threshold.

According to the affidavit, an officer said he stopped an SUV around 1:23 a.m. after seeing it drifting in the road and nearly striking a guardrail.

Video shows the moment the officer approached the vehicle. As the door opens, the officer can be heard saying to Damon multiple times, “shut your door” while approaching his SUV. The video shows Damon’s wife, Michelle Mangan-Damon, climb out of the SUV and ask, “What’s happening right now?”

According to the affidavit, the officer described Damon as “extremely unsteady on his feet and his speech was extremely slurred.” The officer added he smelled alcohol coming from Damon.

The officer said that Mangan-Damon continued to disobey his commands to stay in the car, and at one point, Damon then stepped back over between the officer and his wife, the affidavit says.

The officer said he then grabbed Damon and escorted him to stand in front of the police car, ordering him to say there, the affidavit says.

Video shows Mangan-Damon walking toward the driver’s side of the SUV when the officer grabbed her left wrist to stop her. Damon then intervened and got between the officer and the wife.

In the video, the officer can be heard saying “fighting one-two, actually” into his police radio.

The bodycam fell on the ground, showing both Damon and the officer. At one point, Damon can be heard saying a couple of times, “Blue lives matter,” a reference to his support for police officers.

Two officers were eventually able to put Damon and his wife in handcuffs, according to the video and the affidavit.

“I know people are trying to target me because I’m a Trump supporter,” Damon later said.

“I don’t think that has anything to do with it,” an officer responds.

“Yea, it does,” Damon said.

“That’s neither here nor there right now; that’s not why I’m stopping you,” the officer said.

Stuart Hyman, who is representing Damon and his wife, told CNN on Wednesday that the bodycam video doesn’t show some of the allegations made by the police, including the alleged driving pattern that led to the stop.

“If you watch the video, then you saw that the driving pattern wasn’t on the video that was being narrated and yet there was a camera in the car that could have recorded that,” Hyman said.

Hyman added the incident was “not a textbook example of how a police officer should handle this type of situation,” explaining the officer did not try to de-escalate at times when Mangan-Damon was not complying as well as when Damon tried to intervene.

Hyman told CNN Mangan-Damon has not been charged.

CNN has reached out to the Windermere PD for response to the attorney’s statements.

Damon retired from Major League Baseball in 2012 after an 18-year career. He played on seven teams, mostly notably the Kansas City Royals, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.

CNN’s Travis Caldwell contributed to this report.

DUI charges dismissed for Denver Broncos’ Melvin Gordon as RB pleads to lesser charges

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon’s DUI charges were dismissed Wednesday morning in Denver County Court as Gordon pleaded guilty to lesser charges of excessive speeding and reckless driving.

Gordon had a jury trial scheduled for April 8 if the case had not been settled before then. The 27-year-old was arrested Oct. 13 in downtown Denver and charged with DUI; he also was cited for speeding — between 25 and 39 mph over the legal limit.

He did not take a Breathalyzer test at the scene.

The Denver District Attorney’s office dismissed the DUI charges after Gordon’s legal team raised evidentiary concerns. Gordon, who had pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge in January, had a previous hearing rescheduled to Wednesday after his attorneys cited new information.

Gordon will likely avoid league discipline as well. The NFL has previously suspended players who had been charged with reckless driving, including former New York Giants kicker Aldrick Rosas last season, but in that incident Rojas had also been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a valid license.

In 2018, then-New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson was not suspended by the NFL after he had pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge.

Gordon signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Broncos last offseason. He led the Broncos in carries (215), rushing yards (986) and rushing touchdowns (nine) this past season.

Wednesday’s dismissal also had potential financial impact for Gordon beyond lost salary due to a league suspension. If Gordon had been suspended, Broncos general manager George Paton could have moved to void $6.5 million worth of guaranteed money for 2021 in Gordon’s deal because of the arrest.

As the season drew to a close, Gordon said: “As far as the contract and all that stuff, I let my agent handle all that — the void and all that stuff. Hopefully I did enough for them to want to keep me here. … So, we’ll see; hopefully it works out, and hopefully they like me enough to kind of put all that stuff to the side. I guess in a couple months or so we’ll see what’s up.”

Two weeks after his arrest, Gordon had said: “I am sorry I was even in the situation … Obviously I try to do my best to walk a straight line and lead by example, things like that. I’m a little upset I even put myself in that situation.”

Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach under investigation after car crash

A Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach is under investigation after he was involved in a car crash that left a 5-year-old child with life-threatening injuries.

Britt Reid, the outside linebackers coach and son of head coach Andy Reid, got in a car crash on Thursday near the team’s stadium, according to a Kansas City Missouri Police Department report obtained by ESPN

The collision involved three vehicles: Britt Reid’s and two others that were parked on the side of the road. One car ran out of gas on the ramp to Interstate 435, so the driver called family members for help.

While the two cars were parked on the side of the ramp, Reid hit the car that ran out of gas and then rear-ended the second car, which left a 4-year-old injured and a 5-year-old with life-threatening injuries. Both children were taken to the hospital, according to the report.

A police officer’s statement obtained by ESPN said the officer at the scene smelled “a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages” and saw that Reid’s eyes were bloodshot.

Reid, who has a history of driving under the influence, admitted that he had a couple of drinks before driving in addition to taking prescribed Adderall, the statement said. Reid ended up complaining about stomach issues and is now in the hospital.

Reid’s injuries are unknown, but he could be in the hospital for days, a source told ESPN. Another source said that Reid will not be going to the Super Bowl on Sunday with his team.

The police told ESPN that any charges won’t be filed until after the Super Bowl. No one else who was involved in the crash suffered life-threatening injuries.

“The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid,” the Chiefs said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

The Hill has reached out to the Kansas City Missouri Police Department for a copy of the report.
