Lionel Messi cements his place among the greats after winning epic duel against Kylian Mbappe

CNN
 —

Now there can be no arguments. Now there should be no debate.

In the most dramatic, nerve-shredding way imaginable, Lionel Messi finally got his hands on the World Cup and with it cemented his place in the pantheon of soccer greats, alongside Diego Maradona and Pelé.

The final was as good as soccer gets. A match for the ages with a fairytale ending.

Messi and Kylian Mbappé, the game’s two superstars went toe-to-toe in arguably the greatest World Cup final in history. Soccer may be a team game, but this was a prize fight between two players who will be remembered as all-time greats.

Mbappé scored a remarkable hattrick, making him just the second man in history to do so in a World Cup final, and won the Golden Ball – awarded to the tournament’s top scorer – but fell agonizingly short in his effort to single-handedly retain the trophy for France.

Aged just 23, Mbappé’s astonishing performance further confirmed his status as the future of the sport. He has now scored four goals in World Cup finals, the most of any player in history, and he is level with Pele on a total of 12 World Cup goals. He has time to surpass all-time World Cup scorer Miroslav Klose on 16.

But for all the history Mbappé created on an intoxicating floodlit night in Doha, this was Messi’s final. The Argentine captain was not ready to hand over the torch just yet.

The 35-year-old was relentlessly brilliant throughout this tournament, playing with a steely grit and determination that stemmed from an innate belief that this trophy was his destiny, a glorious World Cup farewell that was written in the stars.

After Gonzalo Montiel rolled in the winning penalty, Messi sank to his knees and buried his face in his hands. The moment he had always dreamed of was finally here.

His teammates flocked to him, sinking to their knees to embrace their captain; they had wanted to win this as much for him as for themselves.

Together, they stood and went towards their adoring fans to join the celebrations. Around 40,000 Argentine fans were estimated to have traveled to Qatar and were vociferous in their support throughout the tournament.

The players had the Argentine flag draped over their shoulders and tied around their waists, jumping in unison with the wall of white and blue shirts in the Lusail Stadium’s main stand.

They’ve had to be patient and endured their share of heartbreak since last winning the World Cup in 1986, but it was worth the wait.

Messi sprang to life inside three minutes at the Lusail Stadium, picking the ball up in a pocket of space between France’s midfield and defense and instantly pinged a ball wide left into the path of Angel Di Maria.

It led to the game’s first chance – with Messi also involved again in the build-up, exchanging quickfire passes on the edge of the box – but last-ditch defending and the linesman’s flag prevented Julian Alvarez getting a clean look.

It’s no secret that winning the World Cup with Argentina has been Messi’s lifelong dream, bordering on an obsession.

Though there is no doubt that, at 35 years of age, Messi is slowing down his near-superhuman powers beginning to diminish, there have still been several moments at this World Cup of the absurd, magical brilliance that fans have been accustomed to seeing over the years.

His goal against México and the assists against the Netherlands and Croatia are undoubtedly among his most memorable in an Argentina shirt and helped drag this team to the final, giving the little magician one last chance to win the trophy he craves the most.

In the 23rd minute, Messi got the opportunity to further cement his name in history with another career-defining moment, after Ousmane Dembélé’s clumsy foul had brought Di María down inside the penalty area.

Messi then stepped up to take the spot kick, becoming the only man to score in the group stage, round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final of a single World Cup, according to Opta. Just when you think there can be no more records for him to break, Messi finds another.

He is also the second-oldest player to score in a final and with this, his 26th World Cup appearance, no male player has played in as many World Cup games. His performances earned him the Golden Boot, too, the prize for the tournament’s best player.

For all his remarkable, ludicrous abilities, penalties are perhaps the one major part of the game that Messi has struggled with over the years, missing several on huge occasions.

That had no impact on his confidence, however, as he stepped up and nonchalantly rolled the ball into the corner, sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way.

He played a part in Argentina’s exquisite second, too, sparking the counterattack that led to Di María’s goal with a delightful little flick around the corner to Julián Álvarez.

Messi was even joining in with Argentina’s defensive duties, tracking back and picking the pocket of Randal Kolo Muani, who had been brought on by Dider Deschamps in a shock early double substitution before halftime.

Even the most ardent, optimistic Argentina fan couldn’t possibly have dreamt of a first half as good – and straightforward – as that from Messi and his teammates.

It seemed impossible that this was the same team that was stunned by Saudi Arabia in the opening group game – a performance so devoid of character and heart that it left many wondering whether Argentina would even make it out of the group.

But as the tournament has progressed, Argentina and Messi improved.

With each passing performance, each moment of Messi magic, fans had started to believe that the script had already been written, that the boy from Rosario would end his World Cup career – he said that this would be his last – in the greatest way imaginable. Few, however, could have predicted such a thrilling finale.

As the second half went on, Argentina fans inside the stadium, and the tens of millions more watching around the world, would have grown ever more confident that this was indeed going to be a routine victory, the culmination of a lifelong dream.

As brilliant as Argentina had been, however, France had been equally as disappointing. Per Opta, it was the first time since 1966, when stats started to be collated, that a team had failed to register a shot at goal in the first half of a final.

Fans in Argentina douse reporter while celebrating World Cup win

It was a historically bad performance from France and Mbappé. Until it wasn’t, that is.

In the space of 90 improbable seconds, France came from 2-0 down to tie the game and, in perhaps the most predictable twist ever, it was Mbappé who struck twice.

The first was a low penalty, drilled with just enough power to nestle into the bottom corner, despite a hand from Emi Martinez, and the second a stunning volleyed finish after receiving a return pass from Marcus Thuram.

It was a cruel twist of fate for Messi, as he was responsible for giving the ball away that led to France’s equalizer. After dragging his team to the brink of immortality, Messi’s mistake proved that he was indeed mortal.

Yet, there was more to come.

Messi got his moment, his second goal, tapping in after Lloris had saved from Lautaro Martínez’s strike – it was Messi’s 98th goal in an Argentina shirt, and it was without question his biggest yet.

But still France, and more specifically Mbappé, were not done.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward stepped up after Montiel had blocked his with his arm and buried his second spot kick to take this quite remarkable final to penalties.

It was fitting that both Messi and Mbappé scored their penalties after producing one of the best duels this sport has seen, but more heroics from Martinez in the Argentina goal ensured it was Messi who lifted the trophy.

From the moment he was old enough to kick a ball, Messi’s greatest desire has been to win the World Cup with Argentina. It was never going to be straightforward, but through sheer force of will he has finally realized his lifelong dream.

Looks like a new Guilty Gear Strive or DNF Duel announcement is coming this weekend

Things have been somewhat quiet on the front of Arc System Works since Evo 2022 last month, but it appears that is about to change very soon.

CEOtaku 2022 tournament organizer Alex Jebailey is now teasing what looks to be an incoming announcement(s) for Guilty Gear Strive and / or DNF Duel this weekend.

“Just received another special delivery from my friends at @ArcSystemWorksU to share with the #FGC for finals day at #CEOtaku on stage/stream,” wrote Alex Jebailey on Twitter.

Attached to the tweet was a photo of a thumb drive, which may sound a bit familiar to what went down last year.

During CEO 2021, Jebailey tweeted out almost the exact same thing that ended up being the reveal trailer for Baiken in Strive and rollback netcode coming to BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle and BlazBlue: Central Fiction.

This flashdrive doesn’t clearly have trailer written on it like before, but we’ve seen this game already.

Guilty Gear does have one more character planned to release this year sometime during the Fall season alongside / following the crossplay beta test and full crossplay update.

DNF Duel is potentially far more interesting, however, considering those behind the game have been completely silent about DLC and future content ever since it released back in June. — and it definitely needs something right now.

Since Jebailey says whatever secret he’s holding will be shown off during finals day, fans should be keeping an eye out tomorrow, September 25 for the drop.

Top 8 for DNF Duel is scheduled to begin around 3 p.m. ET /12 p.m. PT and Strive’s finals start after around 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, so those will be the likely times to watch out for — but of course we’ll have all the latest updates here as soon as they’re available.

Trial by fire: Ukraine war becomes gruelling artillery duel | Ukraine

The call came at about midday on Wednesday. There had been “chemical poisoning” after a blast and patients needed collecting.

Fears of a Russian chemical weapons attack have haunted Ukraine almost since the war began, and as the volunteer medics in Sloviansk pulled on the ageing gas masks and plastic overalls that were their only protection, they wondered if this was it.

They set off anyway, inured to personal risks after weeks of driving through shelling to patch up the men and women injured on one of the most intensely fought-over sections of the frontline.

“We got a call saying there was a yellow-brown cloud after the hit and yellow-white flakes in the air like snow. The soldiers immediately started having breathing problems,” said Vit, a paramedic who asked to go only by his nickname, which refers to his peacetime role as mayor of a small town. He was worried about being captured and tortured by Russian troops who were just a few miles away.

The ambulance team listened to the warning and then went to get the choking soldiers. Like the troops they support, they are supplementing limited, outdated equipment with courage and determination.

After dropping off their patient, who had gone into spasms in the ambulance, they were told the gas came not from chemical weapons but from a chemical plant that had been hit by Russian munitions.

But if the fear of one particular horror was put on hold for a moment, the other terrors of this war are drawing closer to this city in Donbas, less than 20 miles behind the frontline.

“You can win one battle then the next day there are more troops, sent back to the same place,” said Vlad, a veteran who signed up to fight again after the February invasion, and now a patient in a Sloviansk clinic. He asked not to give his last name because his family were in areas occupied by Russian troops and he feared they could face reprisals. His cheek shook when he talked about his children, and his fight was personal as well as patriotic.

Map

This corner of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions is one of the few areas where Moscow’s army is still consistently gaining ground, even if their advance proceeds at a snail’s pace and recent attempts to bridge a strategically important river ended in a rout.

Ukraine has followed its victory in Kyiv by pushing Russian artillery back from within firing range of the country’s second largest city, Kharkiv. A senior general said this week that Moscow’s troops had been put on the defensive on several other key fronts, including along the Black Sea coast, and ministers have started talking about an offensive to take back territory lost in 2014.

But on the rolling steppe here, geography denies the Ukrainian military some of the advantages that allowed its forces to humble Moscow’s troops around the capital. Soldiers rarely get close enough to fight face to face or deploy the western anti-tank missiles that helped them save Kyiv. Instead, their artillery guns face off across vast open fields, dug in with mazes of trenches that could have come from the last century, pounding each other with shells while jets occasionally scream overhead.

Many Russian guns shoot further than the ones Ukraine’s military had at the start of the war, so while they wait for western weapons with a longer range – such as the M777 howitzers dispatched by the US and just starting to arrive at the frontline – they must live under constant bombardment.

“Positions where the Ukrainian army are staying are bombed with artillery, missiles and by air constantly, every day, so it gets to the point where there is nothing to hold on to in these points, that is part of the problem,” said Serhiy Haidai, the head of the military administration for the Luhansk region.

“The attacks with tanks we fight off, but we have no possibility to counter the artillery. That’s why unfortunately we have to retreat. We have been holding for three months already, and Russians couldn’t get through this small area. I hope the Ukrainian army will still hold these positions and – with the weapons we are waiting for – can even go into counterattack.”

After the humiliation of defeat near Kyiv, Vladimir Putin doubled down instead on the battle for the eastern Donbas region, where proxy forces have held ground seized in 2014 for eight years, claiming “independence” from Kyiv that provided a pretext for the wider invasion.

The ruthless bombardment they unleashed in pursuit of this goal shows in the type and scale of the injuries treated at the Sloviansk clinic, said Svitlana Druzenko, a paediatric trauma specialist and director of the all-volunteer Priogov mobile hospital, which treated the chemical poisoning victims.

She spent the first month of the war evacuating injured people from near frontlines in the capital. “In Kyiv and the Kyiv region we didn’t see such a large amount of wounded soldiers as here,” she said. “Here we also see a lot more severe injuries: torn-off arms and legs, or we must do an amputation, and we get a lot of head trauma. The main injuries here are from blasts. Near Kyiv we also saw more gunshot wounds.”

Every day they collect casualties from the frontlines, or civilians from bombed-out homes, and stabilise them and send them on to safer hospitals. They know they are targets, because the Ukrainian government says more than 500 healthcare centres have been hit.

Their ambulances have been shelled – they are fundraising for armoured vehicles – they have been tracked by Russian jets, and the towns where they are based have been hit repeatedly.

Some of the western weapons that Ukraine hopes will change the course of the war have started arriving on the battlefield, including M777 guns, stingers and more anti-tank Javelins, Haidai said.

The head of a national guard unit that helps to protect the medics this week showed off the remains of a Russian Orlan drone that he was sending to Kyiv for analysis. His fighters had shot down the aircraft, which costs about $100,000 (£82,000), with a US stinger missile, he said.

The weapons influx was still not enough, Haidai said, but he hoped the shipments would speed up and he took heart from the Ukrainian military’s continued skill in outmanoeuvring Russia when artillery was not holding troops back.

In the last week Russia had twice tried to build a pontoon bridge to bring tanks and weapons round for the siege of Severodonetsk. It was bombed the first time by Ukraine, leading to a large loss of weapons and lives, and then Russian engineers started again in the same place.

“What’s interesting about this bridge is the Russian tactics: they built it, tried to bring over the weapons, we got them, and they built it again and we got them again,” he said. “It shows they are trying to win not with military intelligence but with sheer force of numbers.”

Female Mechanic revealed for DNF Duel and release date announced, included as part of Arc World Tour 2022

DNF Duel caught everyone by surprise with its beta late last year, and it seems we now know when we’ll get to play the full deal.

Following the ARCREVO America 2021 finals, Arc System Works announced DNF Duel’s release date as well as a new character in the Female Mechanic.

On top of that, they also confirmed the brand new fighting game will be included on the Arc World Tour 2022 alongside Guilty Gear Strive as the headlining titles with a combined prize pool of over $100,000.

While much of the brief display focused on gameplay from the previously shown Ghostblade, ArcSys does leave us with the stinger of the Female Mechanic class joining the roster too in explosive fashion.

The trailer concludes by revealing DNF Duel will be releasing worldwide on June 28, 2022 where it’ll launch across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC.

Although it’s releasing more than a month beforehand, DNF will apparently not be included as part of Evo 2022’s official mainstage lineup given what they previously announced.

You can check out the brief new trailer for DNF Duel below.

The Organization | Cliff Notes from 4Gamer Interview with Master Duel Senior Producer Kataoka Ken’ichi

If you dream of Best of 3, let that dream die.

• Master Duel officially went into production during Spring 2019, so Master Duel was in production for roughly 2 and a half years.
• Considerations for producing something along the lines of Master Duel began immediately after the launch of Duel Links.
• Duel Links was designed to be easy to play on mobile platforms, meant to increase the number of Yu-Gi-Oh! fans and card game players.
• Master Duel was designed as a game to let Duelists take things to the next level
• Master Duel was also conceived of as being a game that would be enjoyable for both competitors and spectators
• One of the hardest things for developing the game was ensuring cross play and how the game would work on consoles and smart devices.
• Solo Mode was a later addition, as the game was originally intended solely for Hardcore Duelists. But they found PVP alone made the game a bit too hardcore.
• Since Master Duel is intentionally international, the game will have its own Forbidden & Limited List separate from the Official Card Game and Trading Card Game.
• The game will be designed to have tournaments that will make you want to make use of as much of the card pool as possible, and not strictly stick to one metagame Deck.
• Master Duel is intended, at the very least, to be an event at the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship
• Master Duel will be sticking to Best of 1, there is no consideration for Best of 3.
• Yes, the game is intended as an E-Sport.

Infiltration releases beta tier list for DNF Duel

Fighting game betas obviously aren’t indicative of what the title’s characters and balance will look like upon release, but it gives players a solid base to see what’s immediately strong and how things could continue to develop.

Following the first open beta test for DNF Duel this past weekend, longtime fighting game pro Infiltration released his tier list for the trial version of the Dungeon Fighter Online spin-off.

To the surprise of probably not many people who put a decent amount of time into the beta running through matches, Infiltration places the Crusader and Striker at the top of the chart in the “UNGA” category.

The big holy man’s range of giant attacks were difficult to avoid and counter on their own even without his pop up wall while Striker’s combo options and conversions appear to be the most varied in DNF currently.

As for the lower end of the spectrum, Inquisitor ends up sitting at the bottom in B tier by herself with a more difficult gameplan to get going while Dragon Knight is just above there as arguably the most technical character available.

For his own play time, Infiltration appears to have put the most time into the Ranger and Grappler, who he thinks pretty highly of, putting them both firmly in S tier.

It’s certainly going to be quite interesting to see where this game goes in any subsequent betas and after release, but until then, you can check out Infiltration’s beta tier list for DNF Duel below.
