Temple University Student Killed: Samuel Collington killed near North Philadelphia campus while returning from Thanksgiving

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A Temple University student was shot and killed Sunday afternoon near the North Philadelphia campus, officials said.

The student has been identified as 21-year-old Samuel Collington of Prospect Park, Delaware County.

The shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of N. Park Avenue, not far from where he lived off-campus.

That block is just north of Susquehanna Avenue, a few feet from Temple’s campus.

Police said the senior had just parked his mother’s SUV on the street after returning from Thanksgiving at his family’s home.

Authorities said while he was unloading his things, a robber snuck up on him and a struggle ensued.

According to police, Collington was shot twice in the chest.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Sources tell Action News the shooting was all caught on camera.

“This is a tragedy in every sense of the word. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends and the entire Temple community during this tremendously difficult time,” the university said in a statement.

A memorial has grown outside of Collington’s family Delaware County home.

Action News is told Collington was a political science major set to graduate from college this spring. Temple said students can seek support through Tuttleman Counseling Services, located at 1700 N. Broad St.

Collington was also interning as a Democracy Fellow at City Commissioner Omar Sabir’s office.

“Samuel was an incredibly talented and engaged young man. During his brief time with our office, Samuel exemplified an incredible passion for engaging voters and was an indispensable member of our team,” the commissioner said.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney issued a statement Sunday night. He said that reducing gun violence remains the city’s top priority.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Samuel Collington, and strongly condemn this and any acts of violence in our city. We grieve every life lost to violence, and we’re heartbroken for Samuel’s friends and family as they cope with this unimaginable loss,” Kenney said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

Jason Schaefer Identified As Postal Service Worker Who Was Shot, Killed In Longmont – CBS Denver

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)– Jason Schaefer has been identified as the USPS postal worker who was shot and killed on Wednesday in Longmont. Police arrested the victim’s 26-year-old ex-girlfriend, Devan Schreiner, of Fort Collins, on charges of first-degree murder.

Thursday the United States Postal Service of Colorado had a procession in his honor with 47 postal trucks driving one-by-one on the same route Schaefer drove Wednesday morning.

Throughout the day on Thursday, several neighbors in the Somerset Meadows community dropped off flowers and posters near where Schaefer was murdered.
Neighbors told CBS4 things like this don’t happen in the area.

“You wouldn’t expect like your mailman would be hurt, or something would happen to him,” Mia Vanleeuwen, a neighbor who dropped off flowers. “This is a pretty nice neighborhood I’d say, so it’s just weird that it was right there… in broad daylight, too.”

Schaefer was maybe someone they didn’t know by his full name, but neighbors knew his smile. Tom Lawson, the president of the HOA, says Schaefer was so friendly that sometimes he’d go out of his way to help some of his residents.

“He would come here right round 12 o’clock, 1 o’clock, he’d be here for 20 minutes starting all these boxes with all the mail. He was always friendly,” said Lawson. “He hand delivered mail to some of the houses, because they weren’t capable of getting to the mailbox, so we are very devastated.”

On Thursday, detectives went out to the Longmont neighborhood to gather additional evidence.

“He was just a young dude, who seemed to be living a pretty normal life,” said Natalie Fontenot, another neighbor.

The Somerset Meadows community is hoping Schaefer’s kindness extends beyond this neighborhood.

“It’s just such an unfortunate situation, and fate to have succumbed to,” said Fontenot. “Just I guess like be compassionate cause you don’t know what people are going through.”

A spokesperson with the City of Longmont told CBS4 they’re working with the Schaefer family and the postal service to set up a memorial. They say cards are appreciated and those can be sent to the Longmont post office.

Police believe Schreiner approached Schaefer while he was at a group of neighborhood mailboxes on Heatherhill Street by Renaissance Drive, shot him several times and then ran off. Schaefer died at the scene.

The FBI and the United States Postal Service joined Longmont police in the search for the suspect, which came to an end overnight. Schreiner remains in custody at the Boulder County Jail.

Schreiner was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday afternoon but the hearing was vacated. She’s now not scheduled to make an appearance in Boulder County Court until Tuesday. She does not appear to have a previous criminal history.

USPS Mail Carrier Fatally Shot In Front Of Mailboxes – CBS Denver

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) – Longmont police say a United States Postal Service mail carrier was shot and killed Wednesday in a neighborhood near Heatherhill Street and Renaissance Drive. Police responded to the scene, located in the southwestern part of the city, at around 12:30 p.m.

Police say the USPS employee was shot in front of some mailboxes. Investigators say a male suspect was seen running away. That suspect was reportedly last wearing dark clothing, a hooded sweatshirt and a blue mask.

(credit: CBS)

Officers used a police canine to look for the suspect, but they were not successful.

Jeff Satur, Deputy Chief of Police Services with Longmont police, says the suspect approached the employee and shot them multiple times. The employee died at the scene.

Police say they are searching the area and conducting neighborhood canvasses. Police issued a reverse 911 to residents and say they have not caught the suspect. Satur says police think the suspect is no longer in the area.

Police presence was cleared at around 6 p.m.

David Rupert, communications manager of USPS in Colorado, says the shooting has impacted the federal agency deeply.

“You see us in your neighborhoods. We see your children grow up,” said Rupert. “We become part of your family, too.”

Grief counselors are now helping other employees. Rupert says this is an isolated incident, but had few other details about the situation.

Michael Dougherty, Boulder County’s District Attorney, urged the public to talk to police if they know something about the crime or know where the suspect is.

Five schools in the area were put on “secure status” due to the police activity. However, schools were not put on lockdown.

The schools included: Altona Middle School, Blue Mountain Elementary School, Eagle Crest Elementary School, Silver Creek High School, and Westview Middle School.

(credit: CBS)

Secure status means students stayed inside the school building and exterior doors and windows were locked and secured. Classroom activities were not interrupted.

Secure status was lifted as of 2:45 p.m.

“This is very unusual for our community,” Satur said.

Those who saw what happened, have surveillance video or know more about the crime are asked to call Longmont Police Services at 303-651-8501.
