Gulfport police share new details into officer-involved shooting, aftermath

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – The Gulfport Police Department is sharing more on the officer-involved shooting that killed a 15-year-old.

Online threats against an officer are also coming to light.

While state agencies continue the investigation, community members are demanding more answers.

It’s been nearly a week since the deadly shooting of Jaheim McMillan. The teen was shot in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store.

In a press conference, Police Chief Adam Cooper addressed the public about the moments leading up to the fatal incident.

“One of the officers observed McMillan who was armed. The officer gave orders to McMillan to stop and drop his weapon. McMillan did not comply. McMillan turned his body and weapon toward the officer. The officer fired at McMillan,” Cooper said.

McMillan was later taken off life support in a Mobile hospital.

Chief Cooper requested MBI to take over the entirety of the investigation from the charges of aggravated assault to the officer-involved shooting.

This includes evidence, radio/traffic 911 calls, dispatch, dashboard and body cam footage.

Cooper also addressed threats made to an officer wrongfully accused for shooting McMillan.

“He has nothing to do with this. In fact he was out of state when this occurred,” Cooper said.

“We’re calling for our public safety commissioner for the state of Mississippi to release the video in a timely manner so it can bring some closure of the situation of the investigation,” said State Rep. Jeffrey Hulum III.

As protesters rally in front of the Gulfport Police Department, Hulum is calling for peace as the community is still shaken over the teen’s death.

“At the end of the day, we want to make sure that this family gets the answers and law enforcement gets the answers out to the public so we can move forward and try to rebuild from this tragedy because tragedies like this could add more to the hearts and minds not just to public trust but the people,” Hulum said.

WLOX News learned family and friends of McMillan held a meeting with representatives of the NAACP. We were not to allowed to enter the meeting or receive details at this time.

“This is a very tragic and horrible situation that should have never took place. But, it’s here on our door step an we have to deal with it,” Hulum said.

Gulfport’s police chief is addressing officer threats, and the investigation into last week’s deadly officer involved shooting.

Police: 2 dead, 1 injured in Upper Southampton triple shooting Friday night

UPPER SOUTHAMPTON, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Police in Bucks County are investigating a shooting that left two people dead and one injured.

Investigators say it happened in the parking lot of Steam Pub in Upper Southampton Township at the intersection of Second Street Pike and Knowles Avenue around 11:30 Friday night.

Police say they got multiple 911 calls about a shooting and one of the callers identified himself as the shooter.

The Bucks County coroner identified the victims as 28-year-old Ray Farrell and 30-year-old Steve Panebianco.

Friends and family of the victims say they need answers about what happened.

“I’m going to miss watching them grow, watching them grow to the men that they are because it’s been non-stop,” said Michael Maranon, a friend of the victims.

Fighting back tears, Maranon spoke about the two victims who he said are some of his best friends.

He said Farrell has a young son and Panebianco was celebrating getting a new job.

“Ray was a terrific father, family man, an honest worker. Steve — the same thing,” said Justin Jordan, Farrell’s brother. “We were actually going to stay in last night and go to his son’s soccer game this morning. That was the plan.”

Police say a third person, a 24-year-old, was also shot and taken to the hospital.

Friends and family came back to the scene Saturday in disbelief. Police have not said what led to the shooting, but are hoping surveillance video will help.

“That’s going to be part of the investigation. We are thoroughly looking through all the locations that would have possible video surveillance,” said Chief Dominic Varacallo from Upper Southampton Police Department.

People who loved Farrell and Panebianco said they need more answers.

“I have a nephew now that doesn’t have a father. He has parents now that don’t have a son. That shouldn’t be like that,” said Maranon

Investigators say the shooter has been identified and is cooperating. Police have not arrested or charged the person at this time.

Philadelphia Deadly Shooting: Everett Beauregard shot, killed near Drexel University in Powelton was recent Temple grad

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A 23-year-old Temple University alumnus was fatally shot Thursday morning in the Powelton section of Philadelphia.

Calls came into 911 around 12:30 a.m. for gunshots at North 35th Street near Drexel University.

Drexel police said they arrived to the scene to find Everett Beauregard lying on the sidewalk, shot at least once. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Thursday afternoon, his family released a statement saying in part: “The Beauregard family would like to thank the outpouring of sympathy for the tragic shooting death of our beloved son Everett Beauregard.

Everett was always willing to lend a hand to any anyone who needed his attention, love and humor.”

Family members said Beauregard was finalizing plans to begin his MBA in the winter and was proud of a leadership role in support of the Democratic Party during the 2020 presidential election.

Temple University also issued a statement Thursday:

“Everett had just become Temple Made in June, which only further magnifies the tragic circumstances surrounding his death. He had a very bright future ahead of him, and it is beyond disheartening knowing we will no longer be able to watch him soar alongside his fellow Owls. Our thoughts are with Everett’s family, friends and the entire Temple community during this tremendously difficult time.”

Sources told Action News that Beauregard left a bar and South Philadelphia and was dropped off a few blocks from his house. They said it appears to have been an attempted robbery.

Many Drexel students live in the apartment building near the shooting scene.

A stray bullet went through the window of a first-floor apartment; it lodged in a bathroom wall.

Drexel student Tyler Williams had been sleeping nearby.

“I was asleep, and obviously I woke up and heard a bunch of noise outside. I had no idea what was going on until the cops came in here, and they were asking me if I was alright- and I was like what do you mean am I alright?” Williams said. “It’s obviously scary, but I don’t want to freak myself out or anything. It’s just a cold world.”

So far police do not have a description of the shooter.

“Where the apartment is located, where the victim is found, lying on the sidewalk, we found numerous private surveillance cameras along that apartment complex so hopefully those cameras recorded something that could help us with this shooting,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Philadelphia Homicide: Father of 7, a SEPTA manager, killed in Germantown ambush shooting, police say

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A father of seven is dead after a gunman ambushed him outside his home in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, police say.

The 37-year-old SEPTA manager was leaving his house on the 100 block of Washington Lane, near McCallum Street, just before 1 a.m. when the shooting occurred.

Witnesses told police a black sedan was parked outside.

Police say the suspect waited for the victim to exit his home, then got out of the sedan and began shooting.

At least 15 shots were fired and then the suspect fled in the sedan, police say.

“Witness statements indicate that the rate of volume of fire from the handgun was in such a rapid succession that it sounded like a machinegun. That brings us a concern that the weapon may have been modified,” Philadelphia Police Captain Anthony Ginaldi said.

The victim fell onto his front lawn and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say family members including the victim’s brother and sister arrived at the scene.

“You can actually hear one of the family members crying,” Ginaldi said as he spoke with Action News not far from the victim’s home.

Detectives are searching through surveillance video to help find the suspect, including Ring home security footage.

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) — Wake County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy has been shot and killed in the eastern part of the county.

The shooting occurred near a gas station on Auburn Knightdale Road and Battle Bridge Road around 11:00 p.m. Thursday. That is not far from River Ridge Golf Club.

Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker held back tears during a press conference Friday morning on the deadly shooting.

“We will find who’s responsible for this loss. Even in the midst of the hurt and the pain, we ask for prayers, we ask for patience as we go about finding out what happened and who’s responsible,” Sheriff Baker said.

Several agencies responded to the scene. We are waiting to hear the identity of the deputy and also any suspect information.

Mother of NYPD officer fatally shot answering door of Ozone Park, Queens home; man arrested

OZONE PARK, Queens (WABC) — The man accused of knocking on the door of a Queens home and fatally shooting the mother of an NYPD officer when she opened it is due in court Thursday.

Police said 41-year-old Giuseppe Canzani walked up to the 51-year-old victim’s home located on 109th Avenue in Ozone Park around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, knocked on the door, and fired three shots, striking the victim twice.

The victim, identified as Anna Torres, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In surveillance video obtained by Eyewitness News, school children can be seen running as the crack of gunfire echoed down 109th Avenue.

Seconds later, a man matching the police description of the gunman, who appeared to be holding a silver gun in his right hand, was captured casually walking from the home at the corner of 96th Street, before getting into the driver’s seat of a black Chevy Traverse.

About an hour after the shooting, Canzani drove to the 106th precinct, where he got out of his vehicle and placed a loaded firearm on the sidewalk. Two officers then took him into custody.

Police said the victim is the mother of an NYPD officer, but don’t believe the son’s affiliation with the department was tied to the shooting.

There were two other family members inside the victim’s home at the time of the shooting. Both remained at the scene.

Canzani was charged with second degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm.

A neighbor said he was “shocked” by the shooting and never imagined that something like this could happen on his block.

“This is unbelievable,” Alam Shofi said. “It’s so quiet and so nice. Everyone knows each other. I’ve been here almost 6 years. Never, nothing happened.”

He said he picked up his daughter around 2:30 p.m. and that’s when he saw all the police cars.

“It’s scary that our family lives here,” neighbor Patricia Tominelli said. “Our grandparents live next door you don’t know was it a home invasion or not you don’t know what it is.”

Neighbors said the family kept to themselves and had just moved into the corner house around three years ago.

SeQuoya Bacon-Jones: Officials identify 9-year-old shot, killed during large fight in Trenton, New Jersey

TRENTON — Authorities are asking help from the public in finding the person responsible for the shooting death of a 9-year-old girl during a reported brawl in the downtown area of New Jersey’s capital.

Mercer County authorities said Trenton police were called at about 7:30 p.m. Friday to a reported fistfight in a large crowd in the Kingsbury Square courtyard.

An alert was also received from the ShotSpotter system, officials said.

The girl, later identified as SeQuoya Bacon-Jones, was found with a single gunshot wound and rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, then to Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick Hospital, NJ.com reported.

She was pronounced dead shortly before midnight, authorities said.

Family friend Jessica Dexter says Bacon-Jones was a vibrant young girl who had her whole life ahead of her.

“I feel like I lost a kid myself. Even though she wasn’t my kid, she was still my kid. I just saw her Thursday,” said Dexter.

No other shooting injuries were reported.

Officials said private security officers were on the premises at the time of the shooting.

Mayor Reed Gusciora called the death “horrific” Saturday and said there were many eyewitnesses who could help hold the person responsible accountable.

“Please, we must step up together,” he said in a statement Saturday. “I’m grieving for the family and friends whose hearts are absolutely broken this morning. I know investigators are doing everything they can to bring about justice. But they need help from our residents.”

Gusciora says he does not believe she was the intended target.

Trenton police and the Mercer County homicide task force are investigating.

Burger King murder: Distinctive belt led cops to person of interest in killing of 19-year-old Kristal Bayron-Nieves in East Harlem

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) — A person of interest is being questioned in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old cashier at a Burger King in East Harlem.

The unidentified 30-year-old man was picked up by detectives in Brooklyn on Thursday. No charges have been filed.

The family of 19-year-old Kristal Bayron-Nieves was told of the possible break in the case.

Police released a security camera video showing the suspect:

A distinctive belt and an EBT card led detectives to the man they believe fatally shot the 19-year-old Burger King cashier.

The man is believed to have actually worked at the same Burger King at some point in the past, although it is not believed he knew his victim.

Although most of his wardrobe at the time of the killing was non-descript, he was spotted wearing a distinctive “Guess” belt by detectives during an extensive canvass of surveillance video.

Detectives were able to match the belt to one he was wearing on a picture he posted on Instagram.

The man was also linked by an EBT card he used after the fatal shooting.

He is believed to have fled the scene on a number 6 subway train, taking it from 116th St to 110th Street.

He walked into a bodega off 110th Street, and instead of using the proceeds from the robbery, bought a fruit drink using his EBT card.

Detectives got his name from the card, and tracked him to a Days Inn near Kennedy Airport in Queens, which is currently being used as a shelter.

He was not caught there, instead nabbed while visiting a girlfriend Thursday on Patchen Avenue in Brooklyn.

Detectives are still looking for the .9 millimeter handgun used in the shooting.

He allegedly pistol-whipped the manager with the gun and also took the managers phone.

He then apparently shot the female cashier as she struggled to get the register open.

He has seven prior arrests in New York City.

Sunday’s cold-blooded killing of a young person working a dangerous overnight shift to save money shocked many in the city.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams brought up the case Thursday while talking about unacceptable levels of crime.

“The 19-year-old baby that was shot, we have to catch that guy,” said Adams. “And I refuse to apologize for people who are violent in our city. Those crimes, we are zeroing in on. And we are going to make sure they are taken off our street like the district attorney did with that gang takedown.”

Adams, who previously said the murder was particularly senseless because the victim gave the suspect the $100 that was in the cash register, and he shot her anyway, once again expressed his outrage at the killing on Friday morning.

“I am so focused on stopping 19-year-old girls from being shot in Burger King,” he said at an unrelated event in Queens.

The mayor said he has not received an update on the person of interest being questioned.

Bayron-Nieves had moved to New York from Puerto Rico with her mom, her 14-year-old brother and the family cat two years ago.

Family members are raising money to return her body there for burial. Family members are raising money to return her body there for burial.

A GoFundMe campaign had raised $24,000 as of Friday morning.

Her wake will be held next Tuesday.

Meantime, the reward posted in connection with the case stands at least $20,000.

Community activists gathered outside the Burger King Tuesday night where Bayron-Nieves was shot.

As Jim Dolan reported, they called for an end to the violence and their pleas were loud and filled with pain and grief.

Covina shooting: Father of 3 killed while confronting burglary suspect in Covina, family says; suspect now in custody

COVINA, Calif. (KABC) — The man believed to be the burglary suspect accused of shooting and killing a father of three in Covina who confronted him during the incident is now in custody.

Officers with the Covina Police Department began surrounding a neighborhood Wednesday afternoon after reports began coming in of a man seen in the area that matched the description of the burglary suspect.

Police say a UPS driver saw him near an apartment complex on the corner of Bonnie Cove Avenue and Calora Street.

After an hours-long standoff, the man was taken into custody just before 8 p.m.

The father of three was shot and killed after confronting the burglary suspect.

It happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday after two residents spotted a man possibly burglarizing a vehicle in the 1100 block of N. Charter, according to police.

The suspect ran away but the residents later located him in the 1800 E. Covina Boulevard and confronted him. That’s when police say the suspect opened fire, killing one of them before running away.

Police haven’t officially identified the victim, but family members tell Eyewitness News 38-year-old Joey Casias was the man killed.

Family members say Casias was a UPS employee of 19 years and described him as a devoted father and great neighbor. The heartbroken family says they had plans to visit Disneyland and were preparing for the holidays.

Police released two images of the suspect earlier on Wednesday – he was considered to be armed and dangerous.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe account has been set up for the Casias family.
