Police move on coal mine protesters barricaded in abandoned German village

LUETZERATH, Germany, Jan 11 (Reuters) – Hundreds of police began clearing climate protesters out of an abandoned village on Wednesday in a showdown over the expansion of an opencast lignite mine that has highlighted tensions around Germany’s climate policy during an energy crisis.

The protesters formed human chains, made a makeshift barricade out of old containers and chanted “we are here, we are loud, because you are stealing our future” as police in helmets moved in. Some threw rocks, bottles and pyrotechnics. Police also reported protesters were lobbing petrol bombs.

The demonstrators, wearing masks, balaclavas or biosuits, have been protesting against the Garzweiler mine, run by energy firm RWE (RWEG.DE) in the village of Luetzerath in the brown-coal district of the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg plans to join the demonstration on Saturday, a spokesperson for Luetzerathlebt environmentalist group told Reuters.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the Greens called for no further violence after police and protesters scuffled.

“Leave it at that – from both sides,” he told reporters.

Police say the standoff could take weeks to resolve.

As the officers moved in, some activists perched on the roofs or the windows of the abandoned buildings, chanting and shouting slogans.

Others hung suspended from wires and wooden frames, or were holed up in treehouses to make it harder for police to dislodge them after a court ruling allowed for the demolition of the village now otherwise empty of residents and owned by RWE.

Julia Riedel, who said she has been camping in the village for two-and-a-half years, said the demonstrators had taken up their positions “because the issue here is whether the climate will cross the tipping point or not.”

Police, who had water cannon trucks on standby, led away and carried some protesters from the site.

The project has underscored Germany’s dilemma over climate policy, which environmentalists say has taken a back seat during the energy crisis that has hit Europe after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, forcing a return to dirtier fuels.

It is particularly sensitive for the Greens party, now back in power as part of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government after 16 years in opposition. Many Greens oppose the mine’s expansion, but Habeck has been the face of the government’s decision.

“The empty settlement of Luetzerath, where no one lives any more, is the wrong symbol in my view,” Habeck said with reference to the demonstration.

HEAVY MACHINERY

Birte, a 51-year-old midwife who joined the protest on Sunday, was in tears as police led her away.

She said it was important for politically moderate citizens to attend the protest, to show “that these are not just young, crazy, violent people, but that there are people who care”.

Police have urged the protesters to leave the area and remain peaceful.

“It’s a big challenge for the police and we need a lot of special forces here to deal with the situation. We have aerial rescue specialists,” said police spokesperson Andreas Mueller.

“These are all factors that make it difficult to tell how long this will last. We expect it to continue for a least several weeks.”

A Reuters eyewitness saw police using heavy machinery to start dismantling high barricades.

RWE said earlier on Wednesday it would start to dismantle Luetzerath, and had begun building a fence around the area.

“RWE is appealing to the squatters to observe the rule of law and to end the illegal occupation of buildings, plants and sites belonging to RWE peacefully,” RWE said.

The fallout of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted Scholz’s government to change course on previous policies.

Those include firing up mothballed coal power plants and extending the lifespan of nuclear power stations after Russia cut gas deliveries to Europe in an energy standoff that sent prices soaring.

The government has, however, brought forward the date when all brown coal power plants will be shut down in North Rhine-Westphalia, to 2030 from 2038, acceding to a campaign promise from the Greens.

Shooter barricaded himself in classroom, killing 19 children and 2 teachers, official says

All fatalities and injuries took place inside one classroom at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, according to Lt. Chris Olivarez, spokesperson for the Texas Department for Public Safety.

The shooter barricaded himself in one room, killing two teachers and 19 children, he said.

“Just goes to show you the complete evil from this shooter,” Olivarez told CNN’s John Berman and Shimon Prokupecz.

As the shooting was taking place, officers were going around the school, breaking windows and trying to evacuate children and staff. They were then able to force entry into the classroom where the shooter was, he said.

All the victims have been removed, identified and their families have been notified, the lieutenant said. Multiple children were wounded inside the classroom, according to Olivarez, but there is no exact number as to how many at this time.

“It’s a small classroom, you can have anywhere from 25 to 30 students in there, plus there were two teachers in there. … So don’t have exact number of how many students were in that classroom, but it could vary … It was a classroom setting, a typical classroom setting where you have mass groups of children inside that classroom all together, with nowhere to go,” Olivarez said.

Olivarez said there was no chase with law enforcement before the shooter crashed a car near the school.

When asked if the school was a target, Olivarez said there are still “a lot of unanswered questions.”

“We’re trying to determine that, that’s why we’re working with FBI right now to kind of look back to see if there were any indicators, any red flags, looking at social media. What we know about the shooter is that he is a resident here in Uvalde, he did attend one of the local high schools, he lived with his grandparents, was unemployed, no friends, no girlfriend that we can identify at this time, no criminal history, no gang affiliation as well,” he said.

Olivarez said the shooter had one rifle in his possession when he went into the school, and authorities are working to determine what type of rifle and the capacity.

The shooter was wearing “a tactical vest carrier with no ballistic panels; so typically those type of carriers are used by tactical teams, SWAT teams, where they can place magazines, extra ammunition inside those carriers and be able to move in a tactical formation,” Olivarez said.

Olivarez said his grandmother — whom the shooter shot beforehand — is still alive and authorities are trying to locate his grandfather and immediate family members.

CNN’s Raja Razek contributed reporting to this post.

Barricaded situation in Royal Oak ends, 34-year-old suspected gunman shot by police

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A barricaded gunman situation in Royal Oak ended Saturday night when the suspected gunman was shot by police and rushed to a hospital.

According to authorities, police responded to a report of a domestic dispute between a father and his adult son at a home in the 2700 block of Oliver Road at about 2 p.m. Police said the 34-year-old son was intoxicated and assaulted his father, who called 911.

Neighbors said the man was ex-military and was believed to be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder when he assaulted his father.

Police added he was heavily armed, wearing body armor and barricaded himself inside the Royal Oak residence.

Police said they made phone contact with the son and made repeated attempts to convince him to peacefully surrender. Police said they could hear gunshots coming from inside the house and the suspect made threats to shoot officers.

Police set up a perimeter and urged in the area — on Galpin and Glenview avenues and Oliver and Glenwood roads — to shelter in place, stay away from windows and take cover in basements if possible.

Police said at about 4 p.m., the Oakland County SWAT Team arrived, took over the situation and continued to negotiate with the man inside.

After about two and a half hours of no contact, police said they used a SWAT robot and drone to break through the door and search the house.

Authorities said communication was reestablished with the suspected gunman after the drone was disabled.

“There was a lady out there with the police department who was talking to Jason, She was saying, ‘Jason, come out with your hands up,’” said neighbor Ted Boiteau.

“That’s what it sounded like,” Carol Boiteau said.

“She was trying to talk him out,” Ted Boiteau said. “This went on for quite awhile and while she was talking, we heard a gunshot.”

“And then everything was quiet,” Carol Boiteau said.

The gunshot came from police at 8:28 p.m.

According to authorities, the suspected gunman emerged from the house at about 8:30 p.m., pointed a rifle at law enforcement officers and a member of the SWAT team shot him.

Police said deputies and the Royal Oak Fire Department administered aid to the man and he was rushed to the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

As of 10 p.m., the suspected gunman was still alive at the hospital. His parents are expected to be OK.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Royal Oak Police Department at 248-246-3456.
