Gowan wasn’t active for Arizona through the team’s first five games.

I agree with Kyle Odegard that Gowan, plus a 2022 5th was a lot to give up for a 30 (31 in November) year-old 2022 unrestricted free agent who is coming off his least productive season in 2020 (having missed a month and half of games for a high ankle sprain) and who has been overshadowed in Philly by Dallas Goedert. The Cardinals felt highly enough about Tay Gowan that they chose not to risk waiving him. However, despite the Cardinals’ injuries at CB, Gowan had not as yet played a single regular season snap.

“He’s a guy we spent a lot of time with in the draft process,” Roseman said. “He was somebody that we would have considered with our sixth-round pick. He was in a group of names. He went right before we picked, and he’s a long corner. He’s got tremendous speed.” Gowan has not played in any games this season, with the Cardinals deactivating him in the first five games of the season.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein projected Gowan as a seventh-round pick, with the following scouting report: Outside cornerback who will struggle to stay connected to routes against speed or quality route runners. He does a nice job of crowding underneath routes and has the length and ball instincts to make receivers really work for it on contested catches. Gowan needs to get stronger, but has good size and length to work with. His area of effectiveness will be limited at the next level. He might need to be paired with defenses utilizing more Cover 2 or Cover 3 schemes. It does seem that Gowan could be a fit for Jonathan Gannon’s zone-heavy defense. Gowan will likely be inactive on gameday for a while with the Eagles as he gets comfortable in a new defense.

A 3-of-10 success rate on third down didn’t sustain drives for the Eagles, who opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown drive and then managed just one first down in the next six offensive possessions in a 28-22 defeat. In Sirianni’s mind, one (first down) plus two (second down) didn’t add up to a favorable three (third down), and it cost the offense against the Bucs. That is something that Sirianni knows must improve, and he will spend this mini-bye weekend examining that, and everything else.

The NFL’s crackdown on unsportsmanlike penalties is working the way the league intended. Officials threw 11 flags for taunting in the first two weeks of this season — the same number called in the entire 2020 season for the same foul — but only three over the next three weeks. “We’re right where we need to be and we’re now seeing the correction we were looking for,” NFL executive Troy Vincent told The Associated Press. “We saw the spike the first three weeks and now we’re seeing the decline. The coaches and the NFL Competition Committee are pleased. Coaches have told us their players are adjusting, they’re thinking about what they’re going to do, knowing it may cost the team. These are game-changing penalties for a selfish act.”

This is just going to be fun. We get to see two of the best young quarterbacks in the league with Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson, and two of the only teams who look poised to challenge the Bills in the AFC this year. Los Angeles has been a delightful surprise this season and legitimately one of the feel-good stories this season. I don’t think anyone saw them being legitimate threats in the AFC West, let alone now potentially looking like one of the best teams in the AFC as a whole. This team is young, hungry, and looking to prove itself. Meanwhile it’s weird, because the Ravens are 4-1 and rolling, but it still feels like an underwhelming season so far. I think a lot of this is because we’ve seen Baltimore really struggle with teams like the Colts and Lions, both of whom would have been assumed to be easy wins. That said, there’s something to sticking around and still winning games — so the proof is in the record. This team is dang good.
