Chicago Bears’ Justin Fields acknowledges ‘terrible’ performance after posting career-worst 27.7 passer rating in win

CHICAGO — The Chicago Bears escaped Week 3 with a 23-20 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday, thanks in large part to a late interception by linebacker Roquan Smith that set up Cairo Santos’ game-winning 30-yard field goal as time expired.

But quarterback Justin Fields continued to struggle.

After tallying 48 net passing yards in a loss at Green Bay in Week 2, he completed just 8 of 17 passes for 106 yards and two interceptions against Houston. He also fumbled twice and tallied a 27.7 passer rating, the lowest of his NFL career.

Following the game, Fields offered a harsh assessment of his performance.

“Straight up, I just played — I don’t want to say the A-word, but I played like trash,” Fields said. “Really just got to be better.”

Fields said he was most upset by his two interceptions and planned to begin the process of correcting his mistakes immediately.

“I’m going to go see the film tonight. I played terrible,” he said. “See what I could have done better and get better.”

Fields’ first interception came with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter when he tried to connect with Cole Kmet on a seam route and missed the tight end, whom he said was wide open. The second interception happened in the third quarter and was the byproduct of what Fields described as a poor decision coupled with a poor throw to wide receiver Darnell Mooney with three defenders around him.

“I got pressure, saw Cover 2, (the middle linebacker) running with Darnell,” Fields said. “When I saw that, I got hit while I was throwing, so next time I’ve got to take the check-down. So that’s one thing that I’m going to work on this week: getting pressure — boom — check down.”

The Bears attempted only six passes in the second half and leaned heavily on their run game while Fields struggled. Khalil Herbert, who finished with 20 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns in place of an injured David Montgomery, shouldered the load for a run game that eclipsed 281 yards.

Chicago’s offense sought more balance after a paltry outing against the Packers and struggled to move the ball effectively with its passing game.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus addressed Fields’ shortcomings postgame and how the team can continue to instill confidence in his its young quarterback.

“I think when you are working with a young quarterback in a new offense, I think the people around him have to be solid,” Eberflus said. “So that’s important for us, meaning that the protection has to be good, the run game has to be good, the defense has to be really good and special teams, we’ve got to be awesome.

“What you do is you support that quarterback while he’s growing. And while he’s going through this, and there’s going to be good and there’s going to be things that he has to improve on, but that’s on the whole football team. The whole football team is like that.”

Despite Fields’ struggles, the Bears still were able to pull off a win to improve to 2-1. Fields pointed to the way he fought in Week 3 as a positive and emphasized his desire to win by any means necessary.

“After two picks, the score is 20-20,” Fields said. “The picks are not going to do anything for me now. It’s like at that point, I’m going to do whatever I can to help us win the game. Of course, I want to play better but — I can’t be out here sulking, this and that. Got to win the game.”

Cardinals vs. Rams score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, results for Week 3 NFC West game

We’re halfway through Sunday’s game in Arizona, where the visiting Rams took a 13-6 lead into the dressing room at halftime. The Rams jumped out to a 13-0 lead on Matt Gay’s two field goals and Cooper Kupp’s 20-yard touchdown run with four minutes left in the first quarter.

After punting on their first four drives, the Cardinals put together a 19-play drive on their fifth possession. The long drive had a disappointing finish, however, as the Rams’ defense were able to hold the Cardinals to a field goal after bogging Arizona’s offense down in the red zone. Arizona managed to squeeze together another scoring drive that also ended with a Matt Prater field goal before the end of the first half. Kyler Murray threw for 169 yards in the first half, but the Cardinals’ running game struggled to the tune of just 14 yards on eight carries.

Aaron Donald made history during the first half, becoming the second defensive tackle in NFL history with 100 career sacks since individual sacks became an official stat in 1982.

Which team will come out on top in this duel in the desert? Follow along throughout Sunday’s game in our live blow below to find out.

Buccaneers vs. Packers score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, results for Week 3 NFC game

There’s a battle of GOATS going down in Tampa today, as Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are taking on Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. It’s been the Packers that have owned the “Battle of the Bays” thus far, as Green Bay jumped out to a 14-3 halftime lead.

With both teams missing several wideouts here in Week 3, it allows for the opportunity for other young players to step up. That’s exactly what rookie Romeo Doubs did on the Packers’ opening drive, as he caught three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. On Green Bay’s next drive, Rodgers marched the offense 71 yards down the field on 12 plays, and found Allen Lazard in the end zone for the Packers’ second touchdown of the game.

Can Brady and the Bucs mount a second-half comeback? Follow along in the live blog below, as we break down this matchup as it happens.

Dolphins vs. Bills score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, results; Tua Tagovailoa back from head injury

We’ve got a marquee matchup underway in Miami between two undefeated teams. Unfortunately, the big story of the first half was the head injury to Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who exited the game after getting hit by Bills quarterback Matt Milano with just over two minutes left in the first half. He was able to return for the second half.

The teams played to a 14-14 tie after one half. It was a big first half for Bills quarterback Josh Allen. He went a perfect 6 of 6 on Buffalo’s first drive that included his two-yard touchdown pass to Devin Singletary on fourth-and-goal. Allen’s second touchdown pass of the half, an eight-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah McKenzie, gave Buffalo a 14-7 lead three minutes into the second quarter.

Miami’s defense set up the Dolphins’ first score when Melvin Ingram scooped up Javon Holland’s strip-sack of Allen. Chase Edmunds tied the score with a one-yard touchdown run four plays later. Miami drove 83 yards on nine plays on its ensuing drive that was punctuated by Tagovailoa’s 11-yard, game-tying strike to River Cracraft. Tagovailoa sustained his possible injury on Miami’s next possession, as he was pushed backward and appeared to hit the back of his head on the turf.

Which team will leave Sunday’s game with their perfect record intact? Find out by checking out our live blog below throughout the game for live updates, highlights and analysis.

Patriots vs. Ravens score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, results for Week 3 showdown

The Patriots and Ravens have one half of football in the books at Gillette Stadium. As these two AFC clubs went into the locker room at the break, Baltimore held a slim 14-13 lead, thanks to two first-half touchdowns by tight end Mark Andrews. With Patriots safety Kyle Dugger inactive, Lamar Jackson has routinely thrown in Andrews’ direction and taking advantage of the mismatch in the New England secondary. Jackson also picked up where he left off last week on the ground averaging over 10 yards per carry.

As for the Patriots, the defense has had its moments, especially Deatrich Wise Jr, who already has three sacks on the day. Mac Jones has been efficient throwing the football and also has a rushing touchdown to his credit thus far as well.

Will New England mount the comeback in the home opener or will the Ravens move to 2-1 by fending off the Patriots? We’re about to find out. As this game continues to unfold, be sure to hang out in our live blog of Sunday’s matchup. Below, you’ll find expert analysis and highlights of all the top plays.

Dolphins vs. Bills score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, results for Week 3 AFC East showdown

We’ve got a marquee matchup underway in Miami between two undefeated teams. The Bills looked unbeatable after defeating the Rams and Titans by a combined score of 72-17 in their first two games. The Dolphins have gotten the Mike McDaniel era off to a rousing start after defeating the Patriots in Week 1 before beating Baltimore last Sunday in dramatic fashion.

Both teams have received strong starts from their quarterbacks. Josh Allen is the early front-runner for league MVP after completing over 75% of his passes in his first two games. Tua Tagovailoa has completed over 71% of his throws thus far and has as many touchdown passes as Allen through two games. Tagovailoa’s touchdown total was bolstered by last Sunday’s six touchdown performance in Miami’s comeback win in Baltimore.

Buffalo is playing without several key defenders.

Which team will leave Sunday’s game with their perfect record intact? Find out by checking out our live blog below throughout the game for live updates, highlights and analysis.

College football SP+ rankings after Week 4

In Week 4 of the 2022 college football season, the teams that hadn’t yet looked vulnerable finally did so (except Minnesota, anyway). Georgia dilly-dallied for long periods in its win over Kent State, Michigan had to lean heavily on Blake Corum to stay ahead ahead of Maryland, USC needed all of 60 minutes to fend off Oregon State, and in the end, 12 of the remaining 33 unbeaten FBS teams lost, five as favorites.

Now that the ground has settled and all of the top teams (except Minnesota) have had at least one close call, the SP+ ratings look … about as they did before the season. Alabama’s back on top, Ohio State and Georgia are nearly tied for second, and of the teams in the current SP+ top 10, nine were projected 13th or higher in the preseason. (The exception? You guessed it: Minnesota!)

That’s not to say nothing has changed, however. The Big 12’s brilliant early showing has given it five teams in the top 23 and eight in the top 40 (and has prevented Oklahoma from falling after Saturday night’s loss to Kansas State). Out west, the Pac-12 has shown all sorts of life, jumping the ACC in the averages and landing five teams in the top 25. Beneath the surface, there is plenty of change afoot.

What is SP+? In a single sentence, it’s a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. I created the system at Football Outsiders in 2008, and as my experience with both college football and its stats has grown, I have made quite a few tweaks to the system.

SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. It is not a résumé ranking that gives credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling — no good predictive system is. It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you’re lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you’re strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.

This week’s movers

After four weeks, nearly half the SP+ formula is based on actual performances instead of preseason projections. While that makes it rather impressive that so few teams have changed at the very top of the rankings, it does mean that lots of teams moved up and down significantly this week.

Moving up

Here are the 12 teams that moved up at least 11 spots after Week 4:

  • Kansas: up 29 spots from 81st to 52nd

  • Coastal Carolina: up 20 spots from 71st to 51st

  • South Alabama: up 19 spots from 83rd to 64th

  • West Virginia: up 18 spots from 58th to 40th

  • Georgia Southern: up 18 spots from 104th to 86th

  • Illinois: up 16 spots from 63rd to 47th

  • Western Kentucky: up 16 spots from 64th to 48th

  • Texas State: up 14 spots from 124th to 110th

  • California: up 12 spots from 75th to 63rd

  • Temple: up 12 spots from 123rd to 111th

  • Washington: up 11 spots from 35th to 24th

  • James Madison: up 11 spots from 79th to 68th

As you might glean from that list, the movement is a combination of both stellar Week 4 performances (hello, Coastal, WVU, WKU, Temple, and others) and the increased weight in 2022 performances to date (Kansas, Illinois, Cal, Washington). And if you were finding some gambling value in Kansas this season, that is probably about to come to an end. The books and metrics have adjusted.

Moving down

On the flipside, here are the 10 teams that moved down at least 12 spots:

  • Boise State: down 33 spots from 45th to 78th

  • North Carolina: down 23 spots from 44th to 67th

  • Virginia Tech: down 18 spots from 61st to 79th

  • Miami: down 18 spots from 27th to 45th

  • Arizona State: down 17 spots from 48th to 65th

  • Fresno State: down 15 spots from 55th to 70th

  • Wisconsin: down 14 spots from 15th to 29th

  • Wyoming: down 13 spots from 94th to 107th

  • Boston College: down 13 spots from 80th to 93rd

  • Vanderbilt: down 12 spots from 87th to 99th

After almost giving up more points to Notre Dame than the Fighting Irish’s first three opponents had combined, North Carolina has plummeted to 113th in defensive SP+, which is how you almost fall out of the overall top 70 with a top-10 offense.

Meanwhile, Boise State … yikes.

Conference rankings

1. SEC: 13.7 average SP+ (34.1 average offensive SP+, 20.6 average defensive SP+)
2. Big 12: 13.2 average (35.1 offense, 21.9 defense)
3. Big Ten: 10.6 average (31.1 offense, 20.4 defense)
4. Pac-12: 5.8 average (30.4 offense, 24.6 defense)
5. ACC: 4.0 average (30.3 offense, 26.2 defense)
6. AAC: 1.0 average (28.5 offense, 27.5 defense)
7. Sun Belt: -3.2 average (24.9 offense, 28.1 defense)
8. Conference USA: -8.7 average (25.0 offense, 33.7 defense)
9. Mountain West: -10.3 average (20.1 offense, 30.3 defense)
10. MAC: -12.0 average (23.6 offense, 35.5 defense)

Nine of the Big 12’s 10 teams have risen in the rankings since the start of the season. Kansas has risen by 51 spots, and five other teams have risen by double digits. The SEC is doing fine overall — seven of the top 17 teams, only one outside the top 60 — but its averages are sliding a bit because of drops from teams like Texas A&M, and the Big 12 has damn near reeled it in for the top spot.

Meanwhile, as mentioned above, the Pac-12 has jumped the ACC into fourth place overall. The top three conferences still have some distance on everyone else, but it has been a lovely bounceback year to date out west.

Brady-Rodgers, Bills-Dolphins, Ravens-Pats headline NFL Week 3

Tua Tagovailoa and Lamar Jackson staged an entertaining quarterbacking duel last week in Baltimore, as Tagovailoa’s Miami Dolphins rallied from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Jackson’s Ravens.

Both of those quarterbacks and their teams are right back in the spotlight Sunday, participating in highly intriguing Week 3 matchups. The Dolphins host the Buffalo Bills in an AFC East meeting between 2-0 teams. The Ravens face the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., with the loser of that game falling into an early-season predicament at 1-2.

The third Sunday of the NFL’s regular season also will bring a clash of legendary quarterbacks, with Tom Brady vs. Aaron Rodgers playing a late-afternoon game in Tampa.

NFL reset: Team rankings, Tom Brady plays on, Justin Herbert’s injury

The Bills-Dolphins and Ravens-Patriots games are part of the early-afternoon slate. The Bills have lived up to their reputation thus far as the league’s Super Bowl favorite. They’ve beaten the Los Angeles Rams, the defending Super Bowl champs, and the Tennessee Titans, last season’s No. 1 AFC playoff seed, by a combined margin of 72-17.

Now they must go on the road to play a warm-weather game on a short workweek against a promising Dolphins team with a revved-up passing game. Tagovailoa threw for 469 yards and six touchdowns in last Sunday’s 42-38 triumph over the Ravens.

“We were executing on all cylinders offensively,” Tagovailoa said after that game. “And then when there were times where we didn’t execute, no one panicked. Everyone just came back into the huddle and we regrouped.”

Tua Tagovailoa is suddenly thriving, and the Dolphins are relevant again

The Dolphins overcame deficits of 28-7 at halftime and 35-14 in the fourth quarter. They scored 28 points in the game’s final 13 minutes, and Coach Mike McDaniel began his postgame news conference by asking, “Is anyone else tired?”

The Ravens renew their sometimes-spirited rivalry with the Patriots as they try to get back into the win column. Jackson is coming off a brilliant performance against the Dolphins. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a touchdown pass and a touchdown run of at least 75 yards each in the same game.

“There are challenges every week,” Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said at midweek. “But certainly the Ravens have a lot of them with the quarterback, his passing game, the running game, his ability to make elusive extended plays, the explosiveness of their receivers and tight ends and him.”

The post-Tom Brady Patriots are still figuring out who they are

Belichick even drew chuckles when he was asked whether Jackson has answered the questions about his pocket-passing abilities that he faced entering the NFL.

“Without a doubt,” Belichick said. “He’s the type of player that’s an MVP type of candidate. I think he’s more than answered it. Wait and see what his contract is. That’ll answer it.”

Brady and Rodgers will square off for the fifth time in their highly decorated careers. Brady has won three of the four meetings to date.

Brady has thrown for a modest 402 yards in two games this season but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by their defense, are off to a 2-0 start. Rodgers’s Green Bay Packers are 1-1, having regrouped to beat the Chicago Bears at home last Sunday following a season-opening loss at Minnesota.

Rutgers blows its chance to make a Big Ten statement with killer turnovers | Politi’s 5 observations

For Rutgers fans, the Big Ten opener against Iowa was a good test about your level of optimism. You could have summed up this loss, quite accurately, by pointing out that the Scarlet Knights would have had a chance to win if they didn’t score 14 points for the Hawkeyes.

Or, if you are so inclined, you can focus on, you know, the whole scoring-14-points-for-the-Hawkeyes thing.

Final score: Iowa 27, Rutgers 10.

Actual score: Rutgers 14, Iowa 13, Rutgers 10.

This one isn’t all that complicated, folks. Rutgers is not a program that can make any mistakes against a solid Big Ten program like Iowa and expect to win the game. Two mistakes that end up in their own end zone? Just forget about it.

This was a major missed opportunity for the Scarlet Knights. The night started with an announced crowd of 53,117, with most of the fans in their seats when FS1 turned on its cameras to a national audience. It ended with a predictably empty stadium and a few hardy Iowa fans — is there any other kind? — chanting “Let’s go Hawks!” as the away team celebrated another ugly win.

Rutgers still can’t get out of its own way offensively. Fans might pin that on Sean Gleeson, the offensive coordinator turned message board pinata, but execution was the bigger problem in this game. Rutgers is 8-0 since 2020 when it doesn’t make a turnover, which is likely the reason head coach Greg Schiano has taken such a conservative approach in victories against Boston College and Temple.

But with a chance to go 4-0 against a much better opponent, playing it close to the vest wasn’t going to work. Rutgers was ahead 3-0 when Evan Simon’s pass was intercepted by Iowa linebacker Cooper DeJean and returned 44 yards for a touchdown. Then, in the second quarter, Iowa safety Kaevon Merriweather returned a Joshua Youngblood fumble for a TD and a 14-3 lead.

That was all Iowa needed. The result for Rutgers was a Big Ten record 20th straight home loss in conference play, and for this season, it casts doubt on how this team will compete as the Big Ten meat grinder begins. It certainly won’t beat anyone if it keeps scoring against itself.

Here are five observations from Rutgers-Iowa:

1. ROCKY DAY FOR SIMON

The numbers were pretty good. Evan Simon completed 28 of 49 passes for a career-high 300 yards, and one week after the Scarlet Knights had just 59 passing yards in a 16-14 win over Temple, that is a certainly a big improvement.

But the numbers, mostly amassed late in the game against Iowa second teamers, don’t tell the story. Simon, the only scholarship quarterback available for this game, threw two killer interceptions — including one that was returned for a touchdown — and misfired on several throws early in the game that might have changed the outcome.

Schiano won’t given an injury timetable for any of his players. The eye test, however, on injured quarterbacks Noah Vedral and Gavin Wimsatt during warmups indicates that both will be back sooner than later. Perhaps even next week at Ohio State. They need both back, ASAP.

2. AGGRESSIVE ‘D’ PAYS OFF

The Twitter account @CFBFilmRoom had a fascinating stat this week. Rutgers, under first year defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak, was leading the Big Ten in blitz rate against FBS opponents — and it wasn’t particularly close. Rutgers blitzed on 41.8 percent of its plays, according to the site, well ahead of Purdue at 34.9 percent.

The aggressiveness certainly worked against Iowa in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes were running the ball effectively when, somewhat inexplicably, they called a pass. Before quarterback Spencer Petras could throw, Rutgers defensive back Christian Izien brought him down for a drive-killing eight-yard sack on a well-timed blitz.

The D attacked when Iowa ran the ball, too. Wesley Bailey, a sophomore defensive lineman, knifed through the Iowa line on first-down run to tackle Gavin Williams for a six-yard loss. The defense wasn’t perfect, but it held its own on a night when the Rutgers offense kept scoring points for the opposition.

3. FOURTH AND GO

Rutgers was down 24-3, a deficit the Scarlet Knights weren’t going to overcome in a month, much less in a quarter. Still, as he has done since returning to Piscataway, Schiano set the tone by refusing to accept an outcome that seemed certain. Remember the crazy lateral play in a 2020 loss against Indiana? This was like that, only less dramatic.

He kept his offense on the field three times in Iowa territory in the second half on fourth down. The first two plays, the Scarlet Knights moved the chains — including a nice 10-yard pass from Simon to receiver Shameen Jones. That was the key moment in an 82-yard drive that ended, predictably, on a fourth-down play that did not go their way.

This time, on fourth and four from the Iowa 7, the Hawkeyes sent pressure at Simon, and the quarterback fired a pass into the end zone that wasn’t near anyone in red. Iowa took over on downs. On the next drive, however, Rutgers finally broke through and scored a touchdown.

4. PUNT-A-THON IN PISCATAWAY

It is rare, if not close to unprecedented, to have a college football game get national attention exclusively for the quality of its punters. Adam Korsak vs. Tory Taylor was the main billing for Rutgers vs. Iowa, and somehow, it managed to live up to the hype.

For Rutgers, Korsak was brilliant as usual. He pinned Iowa inside the 20 twice in the first half, including one that was downed at the six. Had Rutgers not handed Iowa 14 points on turnovers, Korsak would have been a major reason for the Scarlet Knights keeping this one close.

For Iowa, though, Taylor was just as good. He pinned Rutgers at the 4 and the 7, and somehow avoided disaster when Rutgers cornerback Max Melton came through untouched and deflected a first-quarter punt. Taylor looked for the ball behind him, but it rolled to the Rutgers 37.

So who won the punting war? Call it a draw.

5. A FERRIS WHEEL, A HUGE RECRUITING DAY AND A NICE TRIBUTE

Here are a few other thoughts about the Rutgers-Iowa scene, the Big Ten and more:

a. A Ferris Wheel! If the Boardwalk has a log flume at the next home game, I’m hopping onto airbnb and booking a place for next summer.

b. Schiano stepped off the bus for the Scarlet Walk and immediately hugged Abram Wright, a three-star linebacker recruit from Florida. This was a huge recruiting weekend for Rutgers — and not just for the football team. Eleven different teams took advantage of the night game to schedule official visits.

c. Rutgers held a moment of silence for Xavier McClain, a Linden High sophomore who died from head trauma sustained in a game on Sept. 9, and Ali Muhammad, a Rahway High player who died in his sleep the day before. It was a classy gesture that shows the connection between New Jersey’s top college program and the high school level.

d. Travel enough around the Big Ten, and you’ll find that most of the conference schools have a big presence in the closest major airport — be it a store, or a display, or something. That’s why Rutgers put a giant Scarlet R in Newark Airport last week.

e. The good-news-bad-news score of the week for the Scarlet Knights? Minnesota pouring it on against Michigan State in an easy 34-7 victory. The Oct. 29 trip to Minneapolis looks like it’ll be a tall task with the Gophers in position to win the Big Ten West, but the trip two weeks later to East Lansing slides onto the “winnable games” list for the Scarlet Knights.

f. The atmosphere at kickoff was great, with a packed student section and new-look light show greeting the primetime TV audience. It’s a shame, though, that Rutgers didn’t give that crowd a reason to stay into the second half. Rutgers cut the lead to 24-10 in the fourth quarter. Would the crowd have mattered at that point? Probably not, but it was long gone.

g. In the press box this week: Giants general manager Joe Schoen and director of player personnel Tim McDonnell. Something tells me they jotted the name Cooper DeJean into their notebook after watching the Iowa linebacker’s off-the-charts interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

h. The pregame light show: Very cool. The game day package continues to improve.

i. The Rutgers offense isn’t good enough to survive many missed opportunities. Three drops in the first two drives — including two by the usually sure-handed Langan — were killer.

j. If Aaron Judge doesn’t hit his 61st home run soon, can Rutgers offer him some playing time as a tight end?
