I want to change that. I want to be unapologetic about this film. We have worked tremendously hard and I believe deeply that we’ve made a good film. A film worth watching with your family and friends. I’ve always been told, “let the work speak for itself”. I am sure Dasvi will. But, I too, want to manifest the positivity around this film.”

British royals’ Jamaica visit stirs demands for slavery reparations

KINGSTON, March 22 (Reuters) – Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday as part of a week-long Caribbean tour, hours after activists protested to demand reparations for slavery amid growing scrutiny of the British Empire’s colonial legacy.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Belize on Saturday to start the tour that coincides with Queen Elizabeth’s 70th year on the throne, and will conclude it over the weekend with a visit to The Bahamas.

They were received by Jamaican foreign affairs minister Kamina Johnson-Smith and Defense Force Chief Antonette Wemyss Gorman at Kingston’s Norman Manley airport. They then left to meet Governor General Patrick Allen, who represents the British crown in Jamaica.

Earlier, dozens of people gathered outside the British High Commission in Kingston, singing traditional Rastafarian songs and holding banners with the phrase “seh yuh sorry” – a local patois phrase that urged Britain to apologize.

“There are historical wrongs and they need to be addressed,” said Dr. Rosalea Hamilton, an economist and activist who helped organize the rally where demonstrators read out 60 reasons for reparations. Jamaica celebrates 60 years of independence in August.

“Part of the conversation is how we begin a new dispensation and (discussion) of actions for the new generation,” said Hamilton, dressed in a T-shirt printed with the phrase “seh yuh sorry.”

The royal visits to Caribbean nations are seen as an effort to convince other former British colonies – including Belize and The Bahamas – to stay on as “realms” of the British monarchy amid a rising regional movement towards republicanism.

‘WHAT ARE THEY DOING FOR JAMAICA?’

Dance hall singer Beenie Man in an interview with Good Morning Britain questioned the royal visit and expressed skepticism about the queen, saying “What are they doing for Jamaica? They’re not doing anything for us.”

One Jamaican judge, Hugh Small, this month burned his ceremonial British judicial wigs in a symbolic protest of the fact that a London-based tribunal called Privy Council continues to be Jamaica’s highest court of appeals.

William and Kate are scheduled to participate in a “sports activity” and a “cultural activity” on Tuesday as part of the tour that wraps up on Thursday, according to a preliminary agenda seen by Reuters.

The couple had to change their itinerary in Belize following a protest by a few dozen indigenous villagers upset that the couple’s helicopter was given permission to land on a soccer field without prior consultation.

Marlene Malahoo Forte, who was Jamaica’s attorney general until January, in December told the local newspaper Jamaica Observer that she had received instructions from Prime Minister Andrew Holness to reform the constitution to become a republic.

That process would require a referendum, per Jamaica’s constitution, making it more complicated than in smaller Barbados – which was able to make the change via an act of parliament.

The government last year announced plans to ask Britain for compensation for forcibly transporting an estimated 600,000 Africans to work on sugar cane and banana plantations that created fortunes for British slave holders.

Jamaica lawmaker Mike Henry has proposed reparations package of 7.6 billion pounds ($10 billion).

He has said the figure is derived from a 20 million pound payment that Britain’s government made in 1837 to compensate slave owners in British colonies for the emancipation of enslaved people following the 1833 abolition of slavery.

Steven Spielberg called out after praising Netflix for casting ‘unknown’ actors in Squid Game

Steven Spielberg has been criticised for claiming that Netflix’s hit series Squid Game is proof that TV shows can be successful despite casting “unknown actors”.

The 2021 South Korean dystopian series, about a group of people invited to join a mysterious contest in order to win a vast fortune, was one of the streaming giant’s biggest hits last year.

Appearing on a PGA Awards panel on 19 March, Spielberg praised the show and congratulated Netflix for taking a chance on a series without any “known stars”, Deadline reported.

“A long time ago it was domestic stars that brought the audience into movies,” the West Side Story director apparently said. “Today, it’s interesting, unknown people can star in entire miniseries, can be in movies.

Squid Game comes along and changes the math entirely for all of us,” he added, pointing to Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “Thank you, Ted.”

On social media, Spielberg has been criticised for his remarks by Squid Game fans who have pointed out that the show in fact stars a number of veteran Korean actors.

Included among them are Lee Jung-jae, one of South Korea’s biggest stars, and O Yeong-su, who began his acting career in 1967.

“LOL just some of the most famous actors in Korea,” one fan said, responding to Spielberg’s comments.

“Another day, another American thinking the world revolves around them,” another tweeted.

“‘Unknown.’ Poor choice of words,” one person said. “I get that Spielberg may have been making a point about having a more ‘known’ (to many Western audience members) actor be an anchor in a new piece of work, but this is a case for when people need to express themselves clearly and not offend.”

“Unknown????? Western exceptionalism rotting everyone’s brains lmfao,” another joked.

Spielberg’s West Side Story is up for seven nominations at this year’s Oscars. See the full list of nominees here.

Kim Kardashian Says North West “Complains” About Her Fashion Choices

Kim Kardashian may be considered a fashion icon, but there’s one individual that remains unimpressed.

During a new interview with Vogue, the 41-year-old SKIMS mogul admitted that her 8-year-old daughter North West has strong thoughts on mom’s signature style.

“North is very opinionated when it comes to what I’m wearing,” she said, seemingly referring to her latest Balenciaga looks. “She’ll always complain when I’m wearing too much black.”

Kim recalled one instance that particularly caught North’s attention, sharing, “I showed up at her school on Valentine’s Day wearing head-to-toe pink, and she got so excited she ran over and hugged me. [Of course] she opened my coat, saw the black lining, and says ‘Mom, you’re still wearing black.'”

North—who Kim shares with ex Kanye West along with Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, Psalm, 2—knows a thing or two about style. She recently styled herself and her siblings in a photo shoot for Vogue‘s March 2022 cover story, alongside her mom.

Kelly Clarkson collapses from the weight of her shame during competition with Anne Hathaway

The daytime talk show host and singer had a hilarious but deeply relatable moment of shame on her show Tuesday during a game with the Oscar-winning actress.

As part of the game, Hathaway and Clarkson were charged with being the first to sing the correct song after hearing a few bars of the music. Clarkson begged the band to play something she knew, and the band obliged — except Hathaway beat Clarkson to the correct answer, belting the chorus to “Since U Been Gone” before the singer.

Realizing she’d been bested on her own song, Clarkson fell to her knees before face planting on her mini stage.

We’ve all been there, Kelly.

“How did you know it from just that?!” Clarkson screamed to Hathaway.

The actress was, however, gracious about her win, telling Clarkson that “we all love that song.”

“Everybody here knew it,” she said.

But Clarkson owned up to it. “This is embarrassing.”

You had your chance, you blew it, Kelly. But don’t worry; we’re sure everyone is “so moving on.”

Disney Employees Walk Out Amid Furor Over Florida Anti-LGBTQ Bill

Several weeks ago, before the Walt Disney Company became entangled in a battle over anti-L.G.B.T.Q. legislation in Florida — one that continued on Tuesday with walkouts by Disney employees — longtime theme park executives worried there could be trouble ahead.

More than 150 companies, including Marriott and American Airlines, had signed a Human Rights Campaign letter opposing the legislation, which restricts classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity and has been labeled by opponents as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Disney, with roughly 80,000 theme park workers in Florida and a long history of supporting the L.G.B.T.Q. community, was not among them. Leaders at the Disney Parks, Experiences and Products division urged action: Disney’s name should be on the list.

They were rebuffed, according to three people briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to comply with company strictures about speaking to reporters. Disney’s newly hired corporate affairs chief, Geoff Morrell, and Disney legislative affairs executives — guided by the general desire of Bob Chapek, the chief executive, to avoid publicly weighing in on state political battles — decided that continuing to work behind the scenes had a better chance of a payoff. For weeks, Disney lobbyists in Florida had been pressing to soften the legislation.

At least in this instance, staying quiet backfired, resulting in a cascade of events that has amounted to one of the biggest squalls for Disney in decades. It has also become a high-profile example of a stark shift in corporate culture: A socially conscious generation of workers are demanding that their employers speak out on contentious social and political issues.

Faced with an employee uprising about the company’s decision to stay quiet, Mr. Chapek shifted course and publicly disavowed the Florida legislation on March 9, the day of Disney’s annual shareholder meeting. On March 10, Gov. Ron DeSantis punched back, mocking the company as “Woke Disney.” On March 11, with some employees still angry and questions mounting about his leadership, Mr. Chapek bluntly apologized to Disney’s 200,000 workers in an email.

Last week, still-unsatisfied Disney employees began organizing protests with a website, WhereIsChapek.com. On Friday, Walt Disney Studios let it be known that a same-sex kiss that had been cut from Pixar’s upcoming “Lightyear” had been restored. Over the weekend, announcers at Disney-owned ESPN protested the legislation with on-air silence during the N.C.A.A. women’s basketball tournament.

And now Disney — a company that cultivates perfection as part of its brand — finds itself in the third week of a mess.

On Tuesday, the WhereIsChapek employee protests culminated with various actions. None were particularly boisterous, although they succeeded in commanding the news media’s attention. On Tuesday morning, a CNBC crew reported live from the front gates of Disney’s corporate headquarters in Burbank, Calif.

Some Disney artists posted support on Twitter, where the hashtag #DisneySayGay was prominent midmorning. Sixty to 70 Disney employees briefly walked in a loop around Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. Down the street at the Bette Davis Picnic Area, a smattering of Disney employees gathered in protest, although they seemed outnumbered, at least at one point, by members of the news media.

In a statement about the walkouts on Tuesday, the company said, “We respect our colleagues’ right to express their views, and we pledge our ongoing support of the L.G.B.T.Q.+ community in the fight for equal rights.”

It was impossible to gauge the ultimate level of participation; most Disney employees are still working at home. Some participation was virtual, one organizer said, with employees leaving an “away” message on Slack or other internal messaging systems to express solidarity.

The creators of the WhereIsChapek site said they were members of Disney’s L.G.B.T.Q. “community and their allies.” The site listed demands, including indefinitely ceasing — not pausing and re-evaluating, as Mr. Chapek has promised — political donations to Florida lawmakers who were involved in the passage of the bill. The New York Times verified that the anonymous organizers were Disney employees.

To get ahead of the walkout, Disney held an all-company virtual town hall on Monday that was dedicated to L.G.B.T.Q. issues. (A town hall had long been planned for Tuesday, albeit on a different diversity, equity and inclusion topic.) The roughly 100-minute session featured a panel discussion with eight Disney employees who spoke about their own L.G.B.T.Q. experience and why the company’s initial silence on the bill was hurtful. Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, a civil rights advocacy group, participated in a separate discussion.

Mr. Chapek spoke briefly on camera, according to several people who attended the meeting.

“I understand where we have made mistakes — and the pain those mistakes caused,” he said. “I know that our silence wasn’t just about the bill in Florida, but about every time an individual or institution that should have stood up for this community didn’t. I and the leadership team are determined to use this moment as a catalyst for more meaningful and lasting change.”

As part of the town hall, Disney announced that Mr. Chapek had postponed a management retreat planned for next week in Orlando, Fla. He and senior executives would instead use that time to go on a listening tour at Disney workplaces, both domestically and overseas.

Disney also unveiled a task force to develop an action plan for Disney to be a more positive force for the L.G.B.T.Q. community, including through its content for families. In addition, Disney said it had signed on to the Human Rights Campaign’s condemnation of anti-transgender government actions in Texas.

To understand the furor inside Disney about its handling of the legislation in Florida, it helps to know Disney’s history.

In the 1990s, Disney was one of the first major corporations to offer health coverage to the live-in partners of gay and lesbian employees. That decision, paired with tolerance of an unofficial “gay day” celebration at Walt Disney World in Florida, prompted a noisy boycott from Southern Baptists. Disney stood firm. (Church members officially ended their boycott in 2005.)

In the current situation, Disney not only tried to stay quiet, it had given money to Florida politicians supporting the legislation, raising alarm, particularly among longtime L.G.B.T.Q. employees: Was Disney fading as an ally?

There has also been simmering resentment inside Disney over L.G.B.T.Q. representation in Disney-branded content. It did not start with Mr. Chapek’s tenure. Disney has long tried to keep such characters and relationships to a minimum. It had been decided that Pixar’s “Lightyear,” for instance, could have a lesbian couple at its center. But a G-rated kiss was perhaps a step too far.

These factors and others — the prolonged isolation of Disney employees during the pandemic, perhaps — added to an already combustible situation.

Remy Tumin contributed reporting.

‘Moon Knight’: Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke Speak Out on Anti-LGBTQ Bills

On Tuesday, employees of the Walt Disney Company rallied in person and online in protest of the company’s response to a raft of anti-LGBTQ legislation that have either passed or are in the works in several state legislatures across the country. Some Disney employees, however, still had to work, especially those promoting “Moon Knight,” the latest Marvel Studios series to debut on Disney Plus.

That did not stop the two stars of the series, Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, from speaking out on the topic.

“I guess my comment would be: gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gayyyyyy!” Isaac told Variety, breaking into song during the virtual “Moon Knight” junket.

“It’s an absolutely ridiculous law,” Isaac continued, speaking specifically about the “Don’t Say Gay” law that passed in Florida that prohibits instruction regarding gender identity and sexual orientation. “It’s insane. It’s insanity. And I hope that Disney as a company comes out as forcefully as possible against this idea. It’s astounding that it even exists in this country.”

While Hawke did not address the specifics of the legislation and the controversy surrounding Disney’s response to it — “I’m not educated about it” — he did offer insight on the importance of LGBTQ visibility in popular culture.

“My life’s work is dedicated to creating empathy,” Hawke said. “I feel the power of stories that we tell each other. If you tell the truth about human experience, you invite empathy. And the more places we shine light, the less dark places there are, and there’s less to be afraid of. And the more we understand each other’s experiences, the more humanity we find in them, and the better we all actually feel. So that’s my job, and that’s what I believe in.”

Other A-listers have spoken out in support of the Disney employee protests via social media. Larry Wilmore posted a photo of himself, producer Pilar Savone, actor Kerry Washington, and writer Raamla Mohamed from set.

Washington also tweeted a statement supporting Disney’s “LGBTQIA+ employees … and I  stand with them in this walk out today.” She also said, “I don’t condone the actions or inactions of Disney in this moment.”

Marvel Studios regular Mark Ruffalo retweeted Washington’s statement: “Standing proud and in solidarity with our LBGTQIA+ family!”
