Two men were presumed dead Monday in a backcountry accident near a ski resort in Nagano Prefecture, police said, a day after the pair were caught in an avalanche.
Nagano Prefectural Police confirmed the two men had been found in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, a term commonly used in Japan before a death can be officially confirmed by a doctor.
Authorities said they were unable to immediately confirm the nationalities of the men, who are believed to be foreign citizens.
