SINGAPORE — A former primary school teacher who molested one of his male students in 2017 was on Thursday (9 September) jailed for two-and-a-half years with three strokes of the cane.

The culprit, now 36, was found guilty after a trial. He cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity.

He is appealing against the verdict and sentence.

The offences took place over two days in June 2017, when the victim was 12.

On 15 June, the man tapped the boy’s genitals over his shorts, before putting his hand into the victim’s shorts and underwear to touch his penis.

The next morning, the man tried to touch the boy’s penis over his shorts.

Aside from the proceeded charges, the man also faces two other counts – for allegedly showing the boy a pornographic video on his laptop on 15 June 2017 and for purportedly causing hurt to the victim in April 2017 by grabbing his wrist and slapping his cheek.

These charges were stood down during the molestation trial.

A pre-trial conference for the remaining charges is scheduled for next month.

For molesting a minor under 14, the man could have been jailed for up to five years, along with a fine and caning.
