SEA Airport Traveler Update: December 23, 2022

This page will be updated with information on winter weather impacts on operations at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

The SEA Snow team is hard at work keeping the runways clear and the planes moving safely for you. Watch this page and check the resources below to stay up to date on airport operations.

Status Updates

December 23, 7:45 p.m.

As temperatures continue to rise, we anticipate returning to near normal operations tomorrow, Dec. 23. Please be sure to continue checking with your airlines prior to leaving for the airport and follow up directly with them for any delays, cancellations, or reschedules.

December 23, 3:40 p.m.

Another runway (16R) is now open… that makes 2(of3)! Airlines are working hard to get their aircrafts out safely. We appreciate all the teams assisting in these difficult conditions. As always, remember to check with your airlines before heading into the airport!

December 23, 11:25 a.m.

We are continuing to keep the runway (16L) and adjoining taxiways clear as our snow crews de-ice and keep things safe. We have seen some takeoffs/landings as airline operations trickle in and out. We will work on more runways as the weather warms and improves. Please be sure to check with your airline.

December 23, 9:30 a.m.

Crews are continuing to work to clear the airfield of ice. Thanks to our teams for keeping things safe!

December 23, 7 a.m.

Currently one runway (16L) has opened after being de-iced. It is limited operations and will continue to be weather dependent as safety is always the main priority. Travelers should continue to monitor their flights and stay in touch with airlines.

December 23, 5 a.m.

The runways are currently closed indefinitely due to freezing rain and temps. Crews are working to de-ice the surfaces as quickly and safely as possible. Safety is the top priority before the runways can reopen. Be sure to check with your airlines for further updates on your specific flight.

December 22, 5 p.m.

We are watching the forecast closely. We’re prepared for the upcoming winter weather. SEA taxiways and runways have been treated with deicer in anticipation of cold weather and possible freezing rain. Check with your airline for specific flight information.

December 22, 3:45 p.m.

We are ready for you — are you prepared for takeoff? Here are some SEA suggestions for speeding up your holiday travel:

  • Arrive early! Allow extra time if you’re parking in the airport garage or checking bags
  • Download or update the flySEA app — it has live security checkpoint wait times!
  • Use SEA Spot Saver to reserve your spot in the TSA line
  • Simplify your security experience — don’t pre-wrap your gifts (we have free wrapping available in the Central Terminal)
  • If possible, limit your checked bags

December 22, 2022, 9:30 a.m.

TSA security checkpoints are currently experiencing long wait times. Please arrive at the airport early and check the flySEA app for the latest checkpoint wait times. Staff will direct you to the fastest line. If part of a trusted traveler program, please use your dedicated lane and checkpoint for screening. Lines may stretch into the parking garage if needed for spacing, so prepare for cold temperatures as you wait.

December 21, 2022, 11:30 a.m.

Brrrr — it’s cold out there! Temperatures at SEA are predicted to drop even more, according to the National Weather Service. The surfaces on the airfield are currently bare and wet. We continue to monitor the weather and treat surfaces for ice.

Reminder, check with your airline for flight schedules.

December 20, 2022, 3:30 p.m.

The ground is currently wet and bare at SEA but we’re continuing to monitor the forecast. Reminder: airlines manage their own flight schedules and aircraft deicing operations (if necessary) so check with them for any changes or cancellations to your specific flight.

December 20, 2022, 7:30 a.m.

No snow on the ground but is expected later in the day. De-icing operations are currently in effect. Please check with your airline for any schedule changes or cancellations since airlines pre-cancelled a number of flights for today.

December 19, 2022, 4:00 p.m.

SEA Airport is open and operating with no impact on operations. The 8th floor of the parking garage has been treated and is open for use!
