N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island will likely remain closed until Tuesday due to severe overwash from a nor’easter pounding the Outer Banks this weekend.

The highway closed north of Rodanthe during Sunday morning’s high tide due to ocean overwash, and at least one dune breach has occurred on Pea Island, leading to exacerbated flooding, according to The Island Free Press.

As of midday on Sunday, ocean overwash was reported in northern Buxton, northern Hatteras village, Pea Island, northern Rodanthe, and in Avon along Ocean View Drive, although there was no flooding on N.C. Highway 12 in Avon as of Sunday afternoon.

Soundside flooding was reported in Hatteras village, Frisco, and Ocracoke village Sunday afternoon and evening.

Continued soundside flooding with water levels 2-4 feet above ground level is possible through Monday, and especially for southern Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island.

All ferry operations to and from Ocracoke Island have been suspended due to the inclement weather.

Sustained winds of 30-40 mph blew over the Outer Banks throughout the day Sunday, with a peak gust of 65 mph reported at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head.

This storm is now one for the books as the Duck Corps of Engineers Pier recorded the fourth-highest tide on record and could top that mark Monday morning.
