Maryland Death Investigation:5 people confirmed dead inside Elk Mills home, near Newark, Delaware border after reported shooting

ELK MILLS, Maryland (WPVI) — Police say three children are among the five people who were found dead of gunshot wounds at a home in Cecil County, Maryland on Friday.

The crime scene is at a home on Hebron Court in Elk Mills, located just a few miles away from Newark, Delaware.

According to Cecil County Sheriff Scott Adams, a man called 911 around 9 a.m. to report that a woman and three kids were shot to death.

The sheriff said the caller had no emotion.

“I think sometimes in these kind of events it’s not uncommon. Almost catatonic,” Adams said.

“The subject hung up. We attempted to make calls back and they went unanswered,” Chief Deputy Gerald Widdoes said.

Officers arrived to find a man dead inside a garage. A handgun was found nearby.

Another body was found on the first floor. Three other bodies were found on the second floor.

Authorities didn’t have the exact ages of the children, but said they were a 5th grader, a 7th grader and an 8th grader.

The names of those involved have not been released pending family notification.

No further details about the circumstances of the shooting have been released.

When asked if this we being called a murder-suicide, Sheriff Adams said “not yet.”

Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Neighbors were stunned that this could happen in their community.

“it just doesn’t happen around here. It’s not like a big city where people get shot and killed. It’s five people in one day in one household.. It’s unbelievable,” said Elk Mills resident Kevin Whipp.
