Three Wichita police officers were injured by a “possible explosion” after being dispatched to a residence around 4 p.m. Saturday.
Two of the officers remained hospitalized Saturday night while the third was treated and released, Wichita police Chief Gordon Ramsay told the Wichita Eagle.
“Their spirits are good and appreciate the support they are receiving,” the chief wrote on social media. “We are praying for a speedy recovery.
As of 9 p.m., police were using drones and robots to search around the home where the blast occurred and were still unsure whether anyone was inside the home, the Eagle reported.
Police had gone inside the home earlier, the chief said, adding the cause of the blast remained a mystery.
“We don’t know if this was a gun, if this was some type of improvised device. That’s what we’re investigating right now,” Ramsay told reporters at the scene, according to KAKE-TV of Wichita. “Currently, the SWAT team and the bomb squad are on the scene and are dealing with what may be inside.”

A man named Haroon Birva said he was outside his girlfriend’s nearby home when he heard the explosion.
“It sounded like a rifle or an AR round,” he told the Eagle. “I just heard one.

The ATF’s Kansas City Field Division said it is working with local authorities to investigate the incident.
