Gunman kills person inside Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, shoots 2 Philadelphia cops before arrest: Police

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A gunman who fatally wounded a person inside a Philadelphia hospital and later shot two police officers is now in custody, Action News has learned.

The incident started around 12:12 a.m. when gunfire erupted inside Thomas Jefferson University Hospital located on the 100 block of S. 11th Street in Center City.

Police say a man wearing blue scrubs, a mask, and a black backpack shot a person on the 9th floor of the hospital. The unidentified victim later died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

Police tell Action News the shooting suspect then fled the hospital in a U-Haul. Officers were able to track the gunman to the city’s Parkside section where a gun battle ensued.

The suspect shot two police officers and was subsequently shot when one of the officers returned fire, said investigators.

One officer was shot in the arm and another suffered a graze wound to the nose. Both officers are listed in stable condition.

The suspect, who has not been identified at this time, is currently hospitalized. There was no immediate word on the gunman’s condition.
