Buffalo mass shooting: 10 reported dead as police investigate manifesto

Ten people are dead and a suspect is in custody after a gunman with a rifle and body armour opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York on 14 May.

The shooting took place at Tops Friendly Market in the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue.

“This was pure evil,” Erie County sheriff John Garcia said in a press conference on Saturday. “It was straight up racially motivated hate crime from somebody outside of our community.”

Eighteen-year-old Payton Gendron of Broome County, New York, roughly 200 miles away from the shooting, and was arraigned and charged with murder in the first degree on Saturday, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Thirteen people in total were shot. Among the victims, 11 were Black. Three people suffered non-lethal injuries.

The shooter had livestreamed the massacre and posted a white supremacist manifesto online, according to investigators.

In a statement, President Joe Biden said “any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America.”

Joe Biden: ‘Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America’

In a statement late on Saturday night, President Joe Biden said “we grieve for the families of 10 people whose lives were senselessly taken and everyone who is suffering the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific shooting.”

The president said the Bidens are “are grateful for the bravery of members of law enforcement and other first responders who took immediate action to try to protect and save lives” as the family prays “for the victims and their families, and hearts all across this country are with the people of Buffalo.”

“We still need to learn more about the motivation for today’s shooting as law enforcement does its work, but we don’t need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation,” he said. “Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. Hate must have no safe harbor. We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.”
