The Slingshot is the new tech that may change how Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is played going forward

Is this going to be Ultimate’s version of the Wavedash?

Although Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now about 3 and a half years old and no longer receiving updates, it appears there are still new discoveries lying within the game’s mechanics.

After weeks of teasing a change to the meta, VGBC|GimR finally unveiled what he’s dubbed the Slingshot tech that applies to all characters with multiple, interesting applications.

The Slingshot uses incidental synergy with Ultimate’s buffer system and other mechanics to give players better movement options as well as input shortcuts, offering universal benefits to the massive cast.

By inputting a dash followed by down-back or up-back, releasing back to neutral and then a jump within a 7-frame window, the tech allows for things like unpunishable aerials, new combo routes, easy advancing or retreating specials, and seemingly so much more.

There are 3 subcategories of the Slingshot that GimR breaks down and explains their inputs and uses between the Flickshot, Holdshot and Fullshot that each use the concept in slightly different yet meaningful ways.

At first glance, the Slingshot’s new movement and attack options appear as though they could be impactful in many of the same ways Wavedashing is in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

We’ll be taking a much deeper look at the Slingshot and providing an analysis on how much of a gamechanger this tech will actually be for the competitive scene for Smash Ultimate in the coming days.

Until then though, you can check out what the Slingshot is all about in the GimR’s Lab video below.
