Technoblade, Minecraft YouTuber watched by millions, dead at 23

In a YouTube video entitled “so long nerds,” the content creator’s father shared a final message from his son with his subscribers.

“Hello everyone, Technoblade here,” the message began. “If you’re watching this. I am dead.”

In the video, Technoblade, who has kept his identity a secret, revealed that his real name was Alex. He also thanked fans for supporting his content, buying merchandise, and channel memberships and joked that his siblings “are going to college.”

“If I had another hundred lives, I think I would choose to be Technoblade again every single time, as those were the happiest years of my life. I hope you guys enjoyed my content and that I made some of you laugh and I hope you all go on to live long, prosperous and happy lives.”

In just under a decade, Technoblade amassed nearly 11 million YouTube subscribers and 3.7 million Twitter followers as he shared his passion for Minecraft, a videogame where users can build virtual worlds out of blocks and create their own storylines. He went public with his cancer diagnosis back in August 2021, telling his followers during a video of himself playing the game that he sought medical help after experiencing pain in his arm that he initially believed was repetitive stress injury from gaming.

According to his father, Technoblade wrote his final message approximately eight hours before he died. Holding back tears, Technoblade’s father described his son as “the most amazing kid” anyone could ever ask for, adding: “I miss Technoblade.”

The video, which has been viewed more than 19 million times, ended with a statement from Technoblade’s family, which read: “This past year had a lot of rough spots for our son as he battled stage four cancer. But he didn’t complain, and kept using his famous strategic mind to try to beat what he knew were almost impossible odds. My son’s bravery on this path was a shining lesson to all of us who were privileged to walk it with him. Thank you for sharing his journey through it all, as he did the work he loved for his beloved fans.”

Social media has been flooded with tributes from fans, celebrities and fellow gamers.

YouTuber Ted Nivison remembered him as: “Effortlessly funny. Endlessly talented. Gone too soon. Rest easy, Technoblade.”

TommyInnit, another popular YouTuber, wrote on Twitter: “Technoblade is a f**king legend. From being a massive fan, to one of his actual friends, I can’t describe how thankful I am to have been in his life. I just know he’s strategizing in heaven on how to beat God.”

In a statement sent to CNN, Sarcoma Foundation of America paid tribute to Technoblade, sharing “deepest condolences with his family.”

Brandi Felser, CEO of the charity, said in the statement: “Technoblade rallied his supporters to raise over $500,000 to date to support sarcoma research. This allowed SFA to provide research grants in Technoblade’s name. Through these efforts, he leaves a legacy that will impact generations.”

Felser said that Technoblade will be recognized with the organization’s Courage Award, an annual honor given to individuals who inspire others “to create hope and a better life for the sarcoma community” later this year.

Technoblade, a popular Minecraft YouTuber, dies from cancer age 23 — shares final video

Technoblade, a popular Minecraft YouTuber, has died from cancer age 23.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel titled “so long nerds” and narrated by his father, Technoblade thanked his fans and fellow streamers for their support over the years, and revealed that his real name was Alex. (He’d “accidentally” let slip he was called Dave in an earlier video.)

“Hello everyone, Technoblade here. If you’re watching this, I am dead,” he says. “Thank you all for supporting my content over the years. If I had another 100 lives, I think I would choose to be Technoblade again every single time, as those were the happiest years of my life.”

In the video, Technoblade apologizes for “selling out so much in the past year” by offering merchandise, but notes that, as a result, his siblings will be able to go to college. “Well, if they want to,” he adds. “I don’t want to put any dead brother peer pressure on them.”

Technoblade’s father describes how the two discussed making a final video, but said Alex was “having a hard time doing the writing” due to the effects of his illness.

His father says Technoblade wrote the script for his final video from bed and died shortly afterwards. “I don’t think he said everything he wanted to say, but I think he got the main points,” says his father. “He finished that up and then he was done. He lived about another eight hours after that.”

In a video posted to his channel in August 2021, Technoblade revealed that he’d been diagnosed with cancer. He says his right arm had begun to hurt in July that year, and he’d initially thought it was due to repetitive strain syndrome. Eventually, he went to a doctor at the beginning of August and was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that grows in the body’s connective tissues.

“I feel a bit silly talking about this with Minecraft in the background, it feels a bit out of place,” says Technoblade in the video. “But I’m a Minecraft YouTuber — I don’t do a face-cam, which is, I guess, how most people would talk about serious things.”

He jokes in the video about how his “chemotherapy arc is going to be fantastic for content,” and how, when he was calling people to tell them about the diagnosis, “nobody took the news worse than my health insurance provider — they’ve been inconsolable for weeks.”

Messages of support, admiration, and condolences have poured in from the gaming community following Technoblade’s passing, including from members of Dream SMP — a hugely-popular Minecraft server that tells collaborative stories with well-known streamers (including Technoblade himself).

“Effortlessly funny. Endlessly talented. Gone too soon,” tweeted YouTuber Ted Nivison.

“Technoblade was someone so many of us looked up to, myself included. Thank you for everything you did for so many. The world won’t be the same without you,” tweeted another streamer, Eret.

In a message posted to Technoblade’s online store, his family said a portion of all sales of his merchandise would be donated to the charity, the Sarcoma Foundation of America.

His family also shared a statement at the end of his final video, reiterating his appreciation and respect for his fans and fellow streamers, and his family’s desire for privacy.

We, the family of Technoblade, wanted all of you to know just how much he adored and respected his fans and colleagues.

From Technoblade’s earliest online days, he was always strategizing ways to delight and reward his audience – giving away online prizes, encouraging good sportsmanship, and most of all sharing his Minecraft adventures for entertainment and laughs. Even after his eventual successes he somehow managed to keep his good-natured humility, competing with an endearing balance between confidence and self- deprecating wit. He avoided personal fame and worked hard to keep his true identity confidential, and we ask you to continue to honor his wishes to protect his privacy and the privacy of his family.

This past year had a lot of rough spots for our son as he battled stage four cancer. But he didn’t complain, and kept using his famous strategic mind to try to beat what he knew were almost impossible odds. My son’s bravery on this path was a shining lesson to all of us who were privileged to walk it with him. Thank you for sharing his journey through it all, as he did the work he loved for his beloved fans.

Bungie sues ‘Destiny 2’ YouTuber who issued almost 100 fake DMCA claims

In December of last year, a YouTuber by the name of Lord Nazo received copyright takedown notices from CSC Global — the brand protection vendor contracted by game creator Bungie — for uploading tracks from their game Destiny 2’s original soundtrack. While some content creators might remove the offending material or appeal the copyright notice, Nazo, whose real name is Nicholas Minor, allegedly made the ill-fated decision to impersonate CSC Global and issue dozens of fake DMCA notices to his fellow creators. As first spotted by The Game Post, Bungie is now suing him for a whopping $7.6 million.

“Ninety-six times, Minor sent DMCA takedown notices purportedly on behalf of Bungie, identifying himself as Bungie’s ‘Brand Protection’ vendor in order to have YouTube instruct innocent creators to delete their Destiny 2 videos or face copyright strikes,” the lawsuit claims, “disrupting Bungie’s community of players, streamers, and fans. And all the while, ‘Lord Nazo’ was taking part in the community discussion of ‘Bungie’s’ takedowns.” Bungie is seeking “damages and injunctive relief” that include $150,000 for each fraudulent copyright claim: a total penalty of $7,650,000, not including attorney’s fees.

The game developer is also accusing Minor of using one of his fake email aliases to send harassing emails to the actual CSC Global with the subject lines such as “You’re in for it now” and “Better start running. The clock is ticking.” Minor also allegedly authored a “manifesto” that he sent to other members of the Destiny 2 community — again, under an email alias — in which he “took credit” for some of his activities. The recipients promptly forwarded the email to Bungie.

As detailed in the lawsuit, Minor appears to have done the bare minimum to cover his tracks: the first batch of fake DMCA notices used the same residential IP address he used to log-in to both his Destiny and Destiny 2 accounts, the latter of which shared the same Lord Nazo username as his YouTube, Twitter and Reddit accounts. He only switched to a VPN on March 27th — following media coverage of the fake DMCA notices. Meanwhile, Minor allegedly continued to log-in to his Destiny account under his original IP address until May.

Genius YouTuber Rebuilds His PS5 To Be Less Than An Inch Wide

Screenshot: DIY Perks / YouTube / Kotaku

There is, inevitably, going to be a PS5 Slim. Not least because the current PS5 is the size and shape of a Dubai skyscraper, but also because Sony always releases a thinner version of their consoles after a few years. But we’re at least a couple of years away from that, meaning we need instead to turn toward modern hero, Matthew Perks, of YouTube channel DIY Perks. Who achieved his goal using water pumps, circular saws, and an oven.

Slimmer than the current PS5 perhaps wouldn’t be the biggest challenge. So much of the gargantuan machine’s width comes from the flourishes in its casing, alongside an absolutely enormous power supply. Matt’s approach to the project is astonishingly ambitious, replacing absolutely anything that ventures too far into three-dimensional realms with his own home-hacked creations.

Aside from the power supply, the Sony-designed PS5 has some pretty sticky-outy heatsinks and other cooling requirements. Given just how much temperature the machine pumps out, this was clearly going to be the most important part to replace. But since water-cooling requires hefty pipes, this led Perks down the most extraordinary route of building his own hand-made water-cooling system between copper sheets.

The further I watched into this video, the more I felt like a) I have achieved nothing with my life and am a bumbling fool who can barely tie his own shoelaces, and b) Matthew Perks is an actual wizard.

Just listen to the way he says things like, “I discovered that the original PS5 requires an ancient diamond found only on the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro,” and then responds to himself with, “But I realized I could replace this with a bottle cap that I’ve transmogrified into gold using alchemy and this plastic tube.” And does it while being so ridiculously likeable.

Seriously, this video is a whole emotional roller coaster, and while I won’t spoil anything, it’s a joy to realize that the two-month-long project didn’t check things off-camera before filming.

For goodness sake, unless you too are an actual wizard, please don’t attempt anything like this yourself. You will definitely die, and possibly kill others around you as you do.

Also, make sure to check out other videos on DIY Perks, because they’re just fantastic.

PS5 Slim That’s Just 2CM in Height Built by YouTuber

We all know that the PS5 is a bit of a beast in terms of size – love it or loathe it, the console is borderline obnoxious, isn’t it? Given the ongoing semiconductor shortages, it’ll probably be a good few years before we get a PS5 Slim, so one industrious YouTuber has taken on the task himself. This is actually a really entertaining and watchable video – there’s a lot of digestible information on Sony’s original hardware design, for example.

The goal for DIY Perks is to shrink the entire chassis down to just 2cm in height, which if you own a PS5 you’ll know seems impossible. The way he does it is by stripping out pretty much all of its cooling and building a new water system, which he then rigs up to a gigantic power brick that’s intended to be kept out of sight. So, it’s cheating in a way, because he actually makes the system bigger if you factor in the fans and power, but we can respect the effort.

Obviously when Sony does build a real PS5 Slim, it’ll work to reduce the overall power draw of the device, allowing it to shrink the cooling components. But given that DIY Perks is working with the original hardware, we found this an enjoyable watch. Are you holding out hope for a smaller PS5 in the future? Shrink your system down in the comments section below.

Rise of YouTuber Who Filmed With MrBeast, Logan Paul

After Beem made a video with popular creator MrBeast, his channel suddenly blew up.

Beem published a video titled, “I Surprised MrBeast With a Custom Car!” in July 2021.

Matthew Beem via YouTube

Throughout 2020, Beem posted several videos about popular YouTuber MrBeast, who currently has 96 million subscribers and is one of the most-viewed and highest-paid creators on the platform.

Beem did not know MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, personally at the time, but he used the YouTuber’s name in various video titles, such as, “I Covered My House With MrBeast’s Face,” and “Asking MrBeast to give me $100,000”

On July 27, 2021, Beem posted a YouTube video titled, “I Surprised MrBeast with a Custom Car!”

In the video, Beem filmed himself using skills learned from his car painting job to customize a Smart car for Donaldson, in celebration of the launch of the YouTuber’s new burger chain, MrBeast Burger.

Beem, who had 19,000 subscribers at the time according to analytics tracker Social Blade, told Insider he spent a month customizing and wrapping the car, and drove it to North Carolina, where he knew Donaldson was based, to try and convince the YouTuber to accept the car in a video with him.

Beem told Insider one of Donaldson’s producers had initially turned down a pitch for a collaboration that Beem sent them, saying that Donaldson was too busy to take up the opportunity. Beem said he decided to pursue his video idea to surprise Donaldson and his team.

“I bought a Smart car without asking them because I figured that it’s a lot easier to say no to an idea rather than an amazing thing that’s already done.”

When Beem drove to North Carolina, he said he called Donaldson’s producers, who agreed to let him present the car to Donaldson in a video. The video now has 4.5 million views on the platform.

Representatives for Donaldson did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

YouTuber Receives Over 500 Copyright Claims For Nintendo Music

Image: Nintendo

DeoxysPrime, who runs a YouTube account with 165,000 subscribers that is home to all kinds of video game soundtracks, has had to remove their entire library of Nintendo music after receiving over 500 copyright claims from the trigger-happy company.

They weren’t hosting uploads of commercially-available albums; rather, like the rest of their channel (which we’ve featured on the site before!), they had uploaded the complete soundtracks to titles like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon taken directly from the games themselves. In a statement posted to Twitter on May 30, they write:

Effective immediately I will be removing all Nintendo music from my channel. With 500+ claims and a dozen soundtracks blocked over the last week it’s pretty clear they don’t want their music on YouTube. I’m sorry to everyone who enjoys their music but I don’t have much choice.

I have no intention of deleting my channel and the rest of my non-Nintendo soundtracks will remain up for the foreseeable future. It’s frustrating but as I’ve said before it’s ultimately their choice to have their music blocked on the platform.

Best of luck to anyone still holding out having Nintendo music on YouTube. So many of those soundtracks have never gotten official releases. But like how bigger channels than mine have gotten hit before eventually those who take their place will end up like this too.

In a follow-up message posted on their YouTube page, they say:

Once again I’m sorry for the inconvenience this will cause, as I enjoy listening to Nintendo music on here just as much as you all do, but it just doesn’t make any sense to continue on like this.

As always you can follow me on Twitter for any other updates and as a general reminder, if you do see any soundtracks on my channel removed, it’s always safe to assume it was for copyright reasons. Be respectful of their right to do this but also please continue to push Nintendo to release their music in official formats, because there’s no reason these soundtracks should have to disappear forever. Thank you.

Some of the soundtracks that have been taken down include those for the Smash series, Donkey Kong Country games, Wind Waker, F-Zero series and most of the modern Mario and Mario Kart games.

Like they say, Nintendo, if you’re going to do this please at least release these soundtracks in official formats (albums! Spotify!), because I am getting so tired of having to link to this old post all the time.

This isn’t the first time a major music channel has been targeted by Nintendo recently. Back in January GilvaSunner received over 1300 copyright blocks, saying at the time “I’m…not angry or surprised that Nintendo is doing this, but I do think it’s a bit disappointing there is hardly an alternative”.

“Dead or alive, what a disgraceful life to live.

“That’s all I’ve got for that misogynist.”

  • Kevin’s ex-wives, continued

Seven years later, he found love with another woman and the two tied the knot for three years before another divorce due to “irreconcilable differences”.

Speaking of his ex-wives he told VLAD-TV: “I don’t say anything negative about them, because there’s no reason to.”

There is not much information available on his ex-wives and their names and Kevin steers clear of the topic.

  • Kevin’s ex-wives

Kevin told VLAD-TV that he has been married twice in the past, with both ending in divorce.

In the interview, he stated that he tied the knot with his high school sweetheart, but the marriage lasted just over a year.

He added that they probably should not have got married and were better “as friends”.

But he said: “We have a great relationship. We’ve known each other since fourth grade.”

The couple shares a daughter, born in 2001.

YouTuber Beats Elden Ring As A Pacifist After 45 Hours

Screenshot: FromSoftware / Kotaku

With folks constantly on the prowl for hands-off strategies in Elden Ring, it was only a matter of time before someone figured out how to reach the end of the game without fighting anything at all.

In his latest video, Iron Pineapple—who runs a great YouTube channel dedicated to Souls and Souls-like games—walked everyone through his attempt to beat Elden Ring as a pacifist. And while the playthrough eventually gets pretty complicated thanks to involving both speedrun glitches and smart build synergies, Iron Pineapple never violated one simple rule: Do no direct damage to basic enemies and bosses alike.

“I think the entire run took around 45 hours,” Iron Pineapple told Kotaku via email. “Most of the time was spent just running around and prepping, and I only got stuck on a few bosses.”

Fortunately for would-be Elden Ring pacifists out there, the game gives you all the tools you need to begin your journey. Iron Pineapple started as the Prophet class for its healing properties and chose the Fanged Imp Ashes as his bonus item. See, his entire strategy was to use the game’s NPC summons and play as a sort of support class. With the summons doing all the damage, Iron Pineapple’s goal would be to buff and heal them accordingly.

As shown in the video below, Iron Pineapple’s ran into several dead ends, some of which led him down avenues that ultimately proved fruitless.

When the Godskin Duo in Crumbling Faram Azula gave even his leveled-up ashes trouble, for example, Iron Pineapple decided it was time to grab one of the best summons in the game, Black Knife Tiche. The only problem is that he would need to complete Ranni the Witch’s quest line to reach Tiche’s ashes. It wasn’t until jumping through its many hoops and reaching the boss that unlocked Tiche that Iron Pineapple realized he couldn’t summon help, preventing him from getting Tiche and rendering the entire detour pointless.

“I probably spent the most time on the Godskin Duo,” Iron Pineapple said. “For a while, I was convinced that if I just healed well enough and got lucky with attack patterns, I could do it. Of course, I eventually used the torch that inflicts sleep instead.”

Unsurprisingly, Iron Pineapple also used the Mimic Tear, which acts as a copy of your character and stands alone as one of the most versatile of Elden Ring’s summons even after its nerf in the 1.03 patch. Iron Pineapple spent much of his pacifist run focusing on other sources of damage, but when push came to shove, it was hard to overlook the ability to craft a highly customized sidekick. As such, he resorted to using the Mimic Tear to defeat many of the difficult, end-game bosses.

“I had a feeling that the Mimic would be very strong from the start, so I made the conscious decision to avoid it for the sake of variety,” Iron Pineapple said. “It was pretty fun to showcase the different niches and strengths of some of the summons in the game and treat the challenges like puzzles to solve rather than just winning through raw stats. So ultimately I was a little disappointed in how strong the Mimic still is even after the nerf.”

Iron Pineapple’s pacifist run is yet another example of the ways Elden Ring retains the strategic openness of its Souls predecessors. With expert knowledge of the tools, skills, and resources at your disposal, it’s possible to beat the game using just about every tactic in the book. Sure, you might hit a brick wall here and there. Iron Pineapple sure did. But if there’s one lesson to take away from a traditional Elden Ring playthrough, it’s that everything can be overcome with a little stubbornness.

YouTuber Dr Disrespect, Banned From Twitch, Launches Gaming NFTs on Polygon

YouTuber and “Call of Duty” streamer Dr Disrespect launched his game development studio Midnight Society back in December, and the brand is now releasing 10,000 “Founders Access” NFTs for early community members.

Dr Disrespect’s NFT announcement comes shortly after the creator tweeted that he has resolved his legal dispute with Twitch and is “moving on” after being indefinitely banned from the live-streaming platform in the summer of 2020. He did not say whether he remains banned.

NFTs are the unique tokens that exist on a blockchain like Ethereum and prove the holder’s ownership over a digital or physical asset. In gaming, NFTs can indicate ownership of in-game assets, like cosmetic skins for weapons or characters.

Dr Disrespect’s gaming NFTs, which will exist on the Polygon blockchain, will cost $50 each. Per Midnight Society’s website, Founders Passes won’t give gamers any pay-to-win perks, but holders will get early access to game builds, a profile picture usable within Midnight Society games, studio events access, and voting rights on game features.

Midnight Society co-founder Robert Bowling comes from Infinity Ward, the maker of “Call of Duty,” and sees NFTs as an important part of Midnight’s gaming ecosystem.

“We’re utilizing blockchain for the Access Passes specifically because we envision these being a cross-platform membership that will cover not just our first game (codename: Project Moon) but also any games we publish in the future (whether developed by us or not),” Bowling told Decrypt via Twitter DM.

“This technology allowed us to build something that can be leveraged by us but not need to be controlled by us, and instead can be grown and expanded on by the community,” he added.

While Midnight Society’s Founders Passes may provide holders with unique avatars, collectors won’t be able to commercialize their NFTs like others have with their Bored Apes, and now, their CryptoPunks. After the initial minting or primary sale, Founders Pass holders will only be able to buy and sell them on secondary NFT marketplaces like OpenSea and Rarible.

Dr Disrespect’s NFTs have already received some backlash on Twitter from gamers, even though the project’s marketing avoids calling the Founders Passes NFTs. (The Midnight Society web site does say that the Access Passes use “environment-friendly NFT technology.”) It’s hardly the first gaming brand to get sniping from gamers when it announced NFTs: Ubisoft, “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 developers, and “Worms developers were met with similar responses when they did NFTs.
