Iranians face retribution after World Cup loss against USA: experts

Iran’s national soccer team faces retribution in the Islamic Republic after coming up short in Tuesday’s showdown against the United States, experts told The Post.

Mike Baker, a former CIA covert operations officer, said the Iranian players are stuck in an “untenable position” after their much-hyped match against the United States, which defeated Iran 1-0 to advance to the knockout round of 16.

“Given what we’ve seen from the Iranian regime … they’ve shown themselves to be brutal and there’s no reason to believe they’re going to suddenly become rational,” Baker said.

In their opening match against England last week, Iran’s players declined to sing their national anthem in an apparent protest over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was allegedly beaten in police custody for failing to properly wear a hijab in September.

And although Iran’s players sang their national anthem Tuesday, a win against the US would have helped ease their prior transgression, Baker said.

After Iran’s soccer players failed to sing their national anthem before facing off with England in the World Cup last week, their families were reportedly threatened with imprisonment and torture if the team failed to “behave” in Tuesday’s match.

“The regime would have used them for their own purposes,” Baker told The Post. “They would have spent all the focus on the victory, defeating ‘The Great Satan’ or whatever clever phrases they come up with.”

On Monday, CNN reported that families of the Iranian team were threatened with imprisonment and torture if the players failed to “behave” before their match against the US. Iranian players were forced to meet with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps after demonstrating before the England game, the report added.

Protests have erupted across Iran since Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old aspiring lawyer, was arrested for failing to properly wear a hijab and died in police custody in September.

Elnaz Rekavi, an Iranian rock climber, is reportedly under house arrest in her home country for competing abroad in October without a mandatory hijab — which many perceived as a gesture of support for Amini. Rekabi, 33, was threatened with the seizure of her family’s property unless she made a “forced apology,” according to reports.

Now, the Iranian team could face fines or even arrest in the wake of Tuesday’s defeat once they arrive home — as retaliation for their disloyalty and their failure to beat the enemy, Baker said.

“Neither is good if you’re an Iranian player upon returning home,” he added.

The Iranian players endured a “tremendous amount of pressure” prior to the game, including criticism from protesters in Iran who believe they have not been vocal enough against the regime, according to Baker, who now works as CEO at Portman Square Group, a global intelligence firm.

The Iran soccer team was in an “untenable position” going into the game against the US, experts told The Post.

Iran has been rocked by furious anti-government protests since Amini’s death. As of Monday, 451 protesters have died during clashes with authorities, including 64 children, according to nonprofit group Human Rights Activists in Iran. Iran’s ruling clerics are singularly focused on ending the rampant unrest that has erupted in 157 cities across the country since mid-September.

The Iranian players could possibly defect to other nations, although that isn’t likely as leaving relatives behind would be especially difficult, Baker said.

“It’s hard to put ourselves in that position,” he continued. “You’re putting your family and friends at risk when you do that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a number of the players have been thinking about it.”

Kenneth R. Timmerman, an author and Iran expert, said the fate of the Iranian players had already been decided prior to Tuesday’s match, “because they’ve already committed that sin” of not singing the anthem.

“I would be afraid of arrest,” Timmerman said. “Even if they had won, they would have been arrested, soundly beaten and warned, ‘Don’t ever do this again.’”

Fatemeh Aman, a fellow at the Middle East Institute, a Washington-based think tank, said she didn’t believe Iran’s team will face any kind of retribution after Tuesday’s loss. That may have been different if one or two players had refused to sing the anthem prior to the US match, but she believes the team’s unity, all singing together, will protect them.

“You can’t arrest the entire national team at the same time, you can’t do that,” Aman said.

However, if any single player is deemed to be supportive of the demonstrations in Iran, he could see his passport confiscated or face potential fines, Aman said.

“I think the Iranians feel sorry for them,” Aman said of the national team. “They are in a really, really hard position, a really bad position.”

Team USA Defeats Iran, Advances To Knockout Round Of 2022 FIFA World Cup

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Christian Pulisic gave his body for his country, scoring the goal that advanced the United States in the World Cup while crashing into the goalkeeper.

Pulisic’s 38th-minute goal lifted the U.S. over Iran 1-0 on Tuesday in a politically charged rematch of their famous meeting a quarter-century ago. The American star was replaced at the start of the second half and taken to a hospital for an abdominal scan, the U.S. Soccer Federation said.

Pulisic scored and was sprawled on the field and lying in the goal for about three minutes as he received treatment from the U.S. staff. He tried to continue playing but was substituted and later taken to the hospital.

Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the U.S. opened with draws against Wales and England and needed a victory to reach the round of 16.

The Americans finished second in Group B with five points, two behind England, and will play the Netherlands on Saturday with the chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

“I always say it’s us against the world,” forward Tim Weah said. “No one believed the U.S. could play good football.”

Iran finished third with three points. The team has failed to advance in all six of its World Cup appearances.

“The dream is over with this result,” Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said. “The U.S. started the game much better than us, more quick with better control of the game.”

There was heightened tension surrounding the match because of the strained relations between the United States and Iran’s Islamic government. Iran had famously upset the U.S. 2-1 in the 1998 tournament in France, eliminating the Americans.

Pregame protocols were normal, unlike the 1998 game, when Iranians presented the Americans with white flowers and the teams posed for a joint photo.

Raucous Iranian fans with horns and drums in the crowd of 42,127 filled the lower bowl behind one goal at Al Thumama Stadium and were far louder than the red-white-and-blue U.S. supporters at the other end and behind the American bench.

The U.S. outshot Iran 9-0 in the first half but didn’t break through until Pulisic came up with the big moment that a growing and increasingly demanding fan base back home had been pining for.

Weston McKennie lofted a pass from just past the center circle to Sergiño Dest at the edge of the 6-yard box. Dest headed the ball in front of the net on a bounce as Pulisic charged up the center of the field past Ramin Rezaeian and Majid Hosseiniand.

Turning his body to let the ball hit his right foot, Pulisic knocked the ball for his 22nd international goal and first in World Cup play. His momemtum carried him into goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, and Pulisic needed to be helped to his feet before going back in.

“Obviously we’re very thankful that he threw his body there,” McKennie said. “At the end it was a heart-drop sinking moment, but we got it done and we’re excited to still be here.”

Weah, who scored the Americans’ goal in the opening 1-1 draw with Wales, nearly doubled the lead in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time but was ruled offside.

Brenden Aaronson replaced Pulisic at the start of the second half.

With England ahead of Wales, Iran knew if needed only a draw to advance and finally got its first shot at goalkeeper Matt Turner when Saman Ghoddos put a header over the crossbar in the 52nd minute. Saeid Ezatolahi put an open shot high and wide in the 70th and Morteza Pouraliganji’s diving header in the third minute of nine minutes of stoppage time went just wide and Walker Zimmerman cleared a loose ball in front of the open net in the ninth minute after Cameron Carter-Vickers got a slight hand on Mehdi Taremi.

“I hope that our fans and our people in Iran forgive us. I am just sorry,” Taremi said.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, a son of former NBA player Howard Carter, made his World Cup debut in place of Zimmerman and gave the U.S. an entirely Europe-based lineup for the first time ever in World Cup play.

The U.S. lineup averaged 24 years, 321 days, the youngest of any team at the tournament thus far and the youngest in the World Cup for the Americans since 1990. Yunus Musah turned 20, the first American to appear in a World Cup match on his birthday.

The U.S. is 1-4 against the Netherlands, all friendlies, overcoming a two-goal deficit to win 4-3 at Amsterdam in 2015.

Go, go, USA!

PREGAME

The United States needs a win to advance to the tournament’s knockout stage — anything less would result in it being eliminated. Meanwhile, Iran just needs a tie and England to beat Wales to secure its spot in the next round.

If the U.S. moves on, their Group A opponent will come from one of the two early matches. Here is who it could be.

Clint Dempsey wants to see it all on the field

Take it from a man who knows.

‘World Cup Now’ crew feeling confident

So confident, in fact, that they’re discussing potential opponents.

U.S. is ‘locked in’

Happy birthday, Musah!

Will it be a special one for the young American? He played a great match against England, just saying …

Love for the captain

Let’s hear it for captain Tyler Adams.

Sargent and Carter-Vickers in for Wright and Zimmerman

Josh Sargent is back in Gregg Berhalter’s first XI after starting on the bench against England, and Cameron Carter-Vickers gets the starting nod over Walker Zimmerman, who started at center back in the United States’ first two group stage matches.

The new battle cry of the USMNT?

Through “I believe that we will win” has long been the supporters’ chant for U.S. Soccer, “It’s called soccer” gained popularity in the lead up to the Americans’ match vs. England and has stayed relevant.

World Cup 2022: Scenarios, standings, tiebreakers as USA face Iran in Group B and Netherlands win Group A

Getty Images

We’re reaching the business end of the World Cup group stage as some of the groups only have one match remaining. So far, France, Portugal, and Brazil are joined by Group A’s Netherlands and Senegal as the teams to book their passage to the round of 16 but more will join them on the final matchday of each group. Qatar have also joined South Africa as the only World Cup hosts to ever fail to make it out of the group stage. But let’s take a look at who can join the trio in the last 16 and what their path is to get there.

Looking at tiebreakers, the start is simple with the team that has the most points advancing. If two teams are level on points then it will go to their overall goal difference. If they still can’t be split, next up the team that has scored the most goals will be the side to advance. The rules will then be reapplied with only the head-to-head match between the two teams that are tied. So the point total in those matches is next followed by goal difference in head-to-head play and goals scored. If they make it the entire way through and can’t be split it finally goes to the fair play system.

Get Your Daily World Cup Fix. Sign up for our new newsletter covering the beautiful game in all its glory, including daily updates about the World Cup, here.

The fair play system will see the team with the fewest penalties in matches advance. So a team loses a point per yellow card, three points for each red card caused by a second yellow card, four points for a straight red card and if a yellow is followed by a straight red card it will count as five points.

A lingering question as USA preps for Iran: What’s up with Gio Reyna?

AL RAYYAN, Qatar – It’s the story surrounding the U.S. men’s national team that Gregg Berhalter wishes would stop being talked about.

The curious case of Giovanni Reyna.

The 20-year-old winger has been a hot-button topic since before the World Cup began, and not by his own doing. Reyna – the closest thing to U.S. Soccer royalty as the son of two-time U.S. World Cup captain Claudio Reyna and former U.S. women’s national team player Danielle Egan – is one of the brightest young stars on a team full of bright stars. He figured to play a huge role for the Americans in Qatar, but has been mostly absent from the field so far.

Reyna, who has 15 caps, four goals and one assist since his first call-up in 2020, did not play in the Americans’ first match against Wales and came on in the 83rd minute against England.

As the U.S. faces World Cup elimination on Tuesday in its third and final group stage match against Iran at Al Thumama Stadium (2 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports App), a question lingers: What’s the deal with Reyna?

USMNT’s Gio Reyna on his personal journey to the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The Americans have to win Tuesday to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament. Iran, on the other hand, only needs a tie to move onto the round of 16 thanks to a 2-0 victory over Wales on Friday.

[For the USMNT, the knockout round has arrived early]

Berhalter’s starting lineup has been mostly the same through two games, except at striker. Josh Sargent started against Wales and Haji Wright got the nod against England. There’s a belief that Jesus Ferreira, the third true striker on this squad, could start against Iran.

Berhalter was asked on Monday how he would assess the play of his center forwards so far, and if he would consider playing Reyna in that role to give Iran a different look. Berhalter responded by saying that Sargent had a good chance in the near post against Wales and Wright was effective against England. He acknowledged his team could have been better in the penalty box, but “it’s up to the rest of the group to give them quality service so that they can finish off some opportunities.”

As far as Reyna goes, Berhalter had this to say: “I think in terms of alternatives at the striker position, we are comfortable with the three that we have. We haven’t necessarily thought about putting Gio in there or Christian [Pulisic] there or Timmy Weah there or Jordan Morris there. We’ve been more focused on the three that we have in camp.”

[Forget tactics and lineups: For USMNT, it’s about having right mentality]

The 6-foot-1 Reyna is a dangerous attacking player when healthy. He’s a smart and technical forward with brilliant ball skills and was the youngest American to appear in the UEFA Champions League in 2020 (then 17), breaking the record formerly set by Pulisic. He’s widely considered to be one of the greatest talents that U.S. Soccer has ever had.

Over the past year, Reyna experienced injuries that limited his availability for the national team during qualifying and also for his Bundesliga club, Borussia Dortmund. He played in his club’s final three games before the World Cup break and for all intents and purposes, he was deemed a healthy and fit member of Berhalter’s 26-man roster.

Reyna told reporters that he felt “100% healthy” after the Wales game despite not playing. Berhalter decided to bring on substitutes Brenden Aaronson, Wright, DeAndre Yedlin and Kellyn Acosta while the U.S. led 1-0, and then Morris came on in the 88th minute. Berhalter said that same night that Reyna might have experienced “a little bit of tightness” from a scrimmage earlier in the week against Qatar club team Al-Gharafa SC, and noted they were “building him up and think he can play a big role in the tournament. The question is when.” Reyna then played about 20 minutes in the second match against England.

Asking Berhalter about Reyna’s status has now become A Thing. And the coach appears irritated by the line of questioning. But even former U.S. captain Landon Donovan wants to know what’s going on.

“He comes into this tournament, we’ve all got him penciled in for the starting lineup and all of a sudden, he doesn’t step on the field against Wales and we’re thinking, ‘What’s going on here?'” Donovan said on FOX before the England match. “I’m not sure what the reality is. He says one thing, Gregg says another. I don’t know, but we need this guy on the field if we’re going to be successful.”

Perhaps all questions will be answered on Tuesday night in what’s arguably the biggest game in U.S. Soccer history. Or perhaps the mystery could continue.

USA scenarios, FIFA World Cup 2022 standings, bracket: How USMNT can advance from Group B after England tie

Getty Images

The United States drew 0-0 with England to wrap up the second matchday for Group B participants. As it stands, the Americans sit in third with two points out of a possible six, with Iran second with three points following their win over Wales and England are top of the table with four points — full standings here. And while you’re at it, sign up for our new newsletter covering the beautiful game in all its glory, including daily updates about the World Cup, here.

Advancement scenarios have gotten cut and dry for the United States as they only need to win against Iran to reach five points and a goal differential of at least +1. Wales will need an upset win against group favorites England to reach four points with the hopes of improving their goal differential, currently at -2, compared to the Three Lions, currently at +4. Reminder: A draw or a loss for the U.S. is out of the picture if they want to advance. It’s win and you’re in mode.

How United States can advance: Simple permutations

  • With a win vs. Iran: The United States will qualify for the last 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups with a win. It’s as simple as that. An England win over Wales would put the Three Lions first on seven points with the United States in behind on five. Wales would need to win by a huge margin — at least by three goals — to overcome the goal differential compared to the United States.
  • With a win vs. Iran AND England loss/draw to Wales: The United States have a few routes to winning the group. A United States victory with an England loss against Wales would do the trick with only five points. If England draw, the United States would need to beat Iran by more than four goals to overturn England’s superior goal difference.

World Cup live scores, updates: USA vs. England score; FIFA World Cup 2022 bracket, USMNT schedule, standings

The main event of Day 6 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is here as England and the United States square off with the top of Group B on the line. Wales vs. Iran kicked off the the action dramatically from Ahmed bin Ali Stadium as the second round of games got underway in Group B.

A game that looked to be headed for the tournament’s fifth 0-0 draw, sparing to life in the last 20 minutes with a red card to Wales keeper Wayne Hennessey seeing red, followed by two late Iran goals keeping the nations hope alive for advancement.

After that, Senegal’s win against Qatar sent the hosts on their way towards elimination from the tournament. The Netherlands and Ecuador battled for top place in Group A. The two sides fought to a well-earned draw over the 90 minutes with Cody Gakpo aiding  the Dutch with an early goal in the first half. Enner Valencia scored the equalizer for Ecuador and the goal was his third of the tournament. The two teams are now level in the group with four points each with one game remaining in the group stage.

With three matches in the books the main even of the day takes center stage with England facing the United States men’s national team. With Iran’s victory over Wales, the winner of this match becomes virtually (or in the case of England actually) guaranteed to advance to the knockouts stages. USMNT World Cup group scenarios: What does USA need to qualify for the round of 16?

In Friday’s first game, Iran beat Wales 2-0 after sensational late goals from Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian at the Al-Rayyan Stadium.

Iran had the better of the chances, hitting the woodwork on several occasions, but luck seemed to be smiling upon the Welsh, despite Wayne Hennessey’s late red card. However, Cheshmi’s 99th minute strike from outside the area gave Iran a famous win, with Rezaeian then finishing a counter-attack.

Although England vs United States needs little more significance — more of that later — the result has clarified what the USMNT need to do if they are to escape the group stages.

The USMNT has successfully reached the knockout stage at six of the 10 World Cup tournaments that have qualified for.

Will they be through if they beat England?

Not quite — but almost. That will put the USMNT on four points, England on three points, Iran on three points, and Wales on one point.

The USMNT play Iran in their final group game, and a point in that match would guarantee progression, while a win would see them win the group. England play Wales in the group’s final fixture.

However, if Iran beat the USMNT, Gregg Berhalter’s side would be knocked out if England beat Wales.

What about a draw?

It makes the situation fairly stark. England would have four points, Iran would be on three, the USMNT will have two points, and Wales only one.

Simply put, a win against Iran will put the USMNT through, though whether that would be as group winners depends on England’s result against Wales.

However, any other result will see the American team knocked out.

Are the USMNT out with a loss?

This is where it becomes more difficult. Their fate would be taken out of their hands.

England will be through as group winners on six points, with Iran on three points, and Wales and the USMNT each on one point.

The USMNT need to beat Iran, and then hope that Wales fail to beat England. If Wales do beat England, the USMNT require their goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded) to be better than Wales, as both teams would be tied on four points.

Who could the USMNT play in the knockouts?

They will play one of the teams from Group A — which includes hosts Qatar, the Netherlands, Ecuador, and Senegal.

If the USMNT finish second their most likely opponent will be the Netherlands. They have lost four of their five games to the Dutch, but won the most recent 4-3 in 2015.

If the USMNT win the group, the most likely opponents are Ecuador or Senegal, who play in the final round of group games on Tuesday to decide progression. They have won five, drawn five, and lost five to Ecuador, but have never played Senegal.

What’s the history of England vs USMNT at the World Cup?

England did not play in their first World Cup until 1950, and their first ever game at the tournament was against the United States, who entered the match in Belo Horizonte as massive underdogs.

However, a 38th minute goal from USMNT forward Joe Gaetjens gave his side a famous victory, and led to England being knocked out in the group stages.

England have only lost on one other occasion to the United States — a friendly in 1993 — but faced them again in the World Cup in 2010. Though Steven Gerrard gave England an early lead, a mistake from Rob Green allowed Clint Dempsey to equalise. The USMNT would go on to win the group.

England vs USA: USMNT takes on England in potentially decisive World Cup meeting

CNN
 —

After a frustrating 1-1 draw against Wales, this World Cup isn’t about to get any easier for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT).

A promising first-half performance and a well-taken goal from Timothy Weah was canceled out by Gareth Bale’s late penalty on Monday as the youthful USMNT team was denied victory at the start of its campaign in Qatar.

Next up is England, the favorite to top Group B having thrashed Iran 6-2 earlier this week – an ominous sign for Wales and the USMNT in their bids to qualify for the knockout stages.

But win or draw against England and US coach Gregg Berhalter will know that a berth in the next round could be within his side’s grasp with a game against Iran to come.

It will be the biggest test the USMNT’s so-called “Golden Generation” has faced under Berhalter and potentially an era-defining game for a side that struggled for form throughout the qualifying rounds.

“We know how much quality England’s going to have. But again, we think that we match up well against them,” US captain Tyler Adams said earlier this week, according to ESPN.

“We have an athletic team. We think that against the ball we’re really dominant at times. You saw that [against Wales] with our counter-pressing and how we’re able to create a lot of transition moments.”

Friday’s game will be played at Al Bayt Stadium in the city of Al Khor, kicking off at 2 p.m. ET.

You have to go all the way back to 2002 for the last time the USMNT defeated a European opponent at the World Cup, although it did secure a 1-1 draw against England at the 2010 edition of the tournament in South Africa.

Otherwise, results have tended to go in England’s favor, winning eight of the sides’ 11 meetings, and another victory would guarantee the 1996 World Cup winner’s progress to the knockout stages.

The good news for manager Gareth Southgate is that captain Harry Kane is fit to play after undergoing a scan on his ankle earlier this week, while Berhalter might look to 20-year-old Giovanni Reyna to sharpen his side’s attack.

Reyna was an unused substitute against Wales and said his fitness is “really good” having been blighted by injuries in recent months.

Wales and Iran contest the other Group B game on Friday when they meet at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

Despite being side-by-side in FIFA’s ranking list, Rob Page’s Wales team will be confident of a victory after England exposed Iran’s defensive frailties on Monday. For both teams, it feels like a must-win game in order to qualify for the knockout stages.

Host Qatar is also back in action on Friday against Senegal, two nations who both suffered defeats in their opening matches. Qatar was beaten 2-0 by Ecuador and Senegal lost by the same scoreline to Holland.

Those two victorious teams will be looking to make it two wins from two when they meet at the Khalifa International Stadium.

USA falters as Bale grabs point for Wales

The USA and Wales battled it out to a tight, tense draw in their World Cup opener as both teams will be fairly happy with that outcome in Group B.

[ MORE: Player ratings | What we learned ]

But the U.S. will feel like this was one that got away as Gareth Bale equalized with eight minutes to go for Wales (playing in their first World Cup game since 1958) as the young Americans couldn’t hold on for all three points.

After eight years away from the World Cup for the U.S., this was as tense as you would expect as Bale grabbed a point for the Welsh late on as a draw was a fair result.

WATCH FULL MATCH REPLAY

After a dominant start the U.S. took the lead in the first half as Christian Pulisic surged forward and played a perfect through ball to the onrushing Tim Weah who poked home confidently to send American fans everywhere wild.

Wales improved drastically in the second half as Kieffer Moore gave them a focal point up top and he somehow headed wide from close range moments after Matt Turner had denied Ben Davies. Walker Zimmerman then made a terrible challenge on Bale and the Welsh captain picked himself up to hammer home the penalty kick to grab a point.

The USMNT face England on Friday in their next group game, while Wales face Iran on the same day.

Berhalter’s masterplan starts well, then fades badly

For most of the last few years the USMNT have been hit by injuries and a lack of form to their key players. But at the perfect time everything fell together, at least for the first 45 minutes, for Gregg Berhalter and his side. Dest and McKennie were fit enough to start, Tim Ream has hit the form of his life to bolster the defensive unit. Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah are fit and firing on all cylinders and this is pretty close to the USMNT’s first choice lineup.

The high-pressing game dominated Wales in the first half and the energy of this young team blew their opponents away. When they were on top they got the goal they deserved and everything was slotting into place for the U.S. when they needed it to. But then they faltered. Whether it be lack of experience or a lack of energy, the USMNT wilted in the second half as Wales missed two big chances before they equalized late on. This was a case of the U.S. having a golden opportunity for victory in their grasp but they let it slip in pretty tame fashion. That will disappoint Berhalter but there were plenty of positives to take from their first half display.

Stars of the show

Tim Ream: Dominant defensively and was so calm on the ball in the first half to keep the pressure on Wales. What a comeback story for the 35-year-old.

Kieffer Moore: What an impact he had after coming on at half time. Gave Wales a focal point and turned the game around.

How to watch USA vs Wales live! – By Joe Prince-Wright

Kick off: 2pm ET, Monday (November 21)
Stadium: Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan
TV channels en Español: Telemundo
Streaming en Español: Peacock (all 64 matches)

There was a lot of talk about why Gio Reyna didn’t come on (he told reporters he is 100 percent fit) and it appears that Gregg Berhalter preferred Jordan Morris over the talented young playmaker.

FULL TIME: USA 1-1 Wales – Disappointing end for the USMNT who were excellent in the first half but fair play to Wales, they fought back valiantly and deserved that point. That sets things up for a very tense Group B.

GOALLL! No, is the answer. Walker Zimmerman goes through the back of Gareth Bale and gives away a penalty kick. Bale then picks himself up and slams home. 1-1.

Tick tock. Just over 10 minutes to go. Can the U.S. hold on!?

Brenden Aaronson on for McKennie. The Leeds midfielder needs to help them get on the ball and stop Wales surging forward.

CLOSE! Somehow Kieffer Moore heads over from close range. What a chance for Wales.

Wales have started the second half well and the USMNT are having to spend a lot of time defending.

GOALLL! Tim Weah with a superb finish after a great run and pass from Christian Pulisic. The USMNT get the goal their dominant display deserves.

Sergino Dest and Weston McKennie both booked within a few minutes. Not ideal. Both have been battling for fitness and only just made this game. Changes at half time?

Save! Wayne Hennessey saves as Rodon heads towards his own goal after good work from Tim Weah. Sargent then powers a header wide from close range. USA have to make the most of being on top here.

A decent start from the USA. Wales haven’t been able to keep the ball and the Americans are knocking it about nicely.

Here we go! The teams are out, the anthems have been sung and the fireworks are flying. It is go time for the USA at the World Cup.

USMNT, Wales starting XI

Key storylines, players to watch closely

For the USMNT their midfield core is going to be their strength but there are still plenty of question marks around the defense. Veteran Tim Ream could start at center back to provide experience, while the midfield trio of Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and Yunus Musah are locked in as the main men in midfield. Ahead of them Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Brenden Aaronson and Tim Weah are all battling for a starting spot in attacking midfield but there is no clear winner to start as the No. 9, so perhaps the USMNT will start with a false nine?

In terms of injuries, Sergino Dest, Matt Turner and Weston McKennie have all been training after brushing off recent injuries. However, Gregg Berhalter said that both Dest and McKennie are unlikely to play the full 90 minutes and said they aren’t fully fit for the opener against Wales. It has also been announced that Tyler Adams has been named captain of the USMNT for the tournament.

Wales love to sit deep and soak up pressure and their back three and fluid system will be tough for the USMNT to break down. Going forward the quality of Ramsey and Bale speaks for itself and Wales will rely heavily on set-piece situations and swinging in crosses for Kieffer Moore to attack. Watch out for Harry Wilson and Daniel James in the attacking areas too. Wales are a robust, experienced team and they are very good at sitting back and then springing counter attacks. Their nation expects them to get out of this group and this game against the USMNT is going to be so close to call. Injury wise Wales look pretty good with Joe Allen training on his own as he recovers from a recent hamstring issue and won’t be available for this game.
