USA vs. Iran highlights: Pulisic puts Americans through to Round of 16

The 2022 FIFA World Cup continued on Tuesday with Group B taking center stage. The United States (1-2-0) held on to beat Iran (1-0-2) 1-0 at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha. The U.S will play the Netherlands in the Round of 16; Iran was eliminated with the result.

If there was any doubt that the United States was going to be aggressive in Monday night’s match, Christian Pulisic sent a message with his first action on the ball.

8′ – Musah tries to capitalize

Yunus Musah, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday, tried to score a worldie for the U.S.

10′ – Pulisic tests the keeper

The young American got his head on the ball but Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand had no problem controlling it.

19′ – Ream’s under control

With Iran pressing, Tim Ream stepped up and got the ball out of a dangerous position.

27′ – Weah rushes opportunity

Tim Weah had a great look in front of goal but didn’t wait for it to settle. That very well could have been the Americans’ first.

32′ – Weah again!

The goalscorer from the Americans’ group stage opener is pressing for his second of the tournament.

38′ – Pulisic shakes it off

Pulisic needed a minute to compose himself after colliding with Beiranvand.

45′ – Weah’s waived off

Weah nearly made it two but the sideline referee call his goal offside.

Halftime: USA 1, Iran 0

The United States dominated possession in the first half, winning the possession battle 61% to 39%. It also out-shot Iran 9-0 in the first 45 minutes.

46′ – Pulisic subs off for Aaronson

Pulisic finished the first half, but he couldn’t carry on for the second half. Aaronson will play the left wing in his place.

47′ – Sargent forces save

Josh Sargent opened the second half for the U.S. with a shot on target. The U.S. clearly don’t plan to play conservatively, even with the precious lead.

78′ – USA holding on

Iran has piled on the pressure in the second half, but the USA is holding onto its one-goal lead.

80′ – USA go defensive

Gregg Berhalter subbed on two defenders — Walker Zimmerman and Shaq Moore — in an effort to hold onto the lead.

81′ – Iran nearly ties it

Matt Turner had to get up to make this save.

The United States needs a win to advance to the tournament’s knockout stage — anything less would result in it being eliminated. Meanwhile, Iran just needs a tie and England to beat Wales to secure its spot in the next round.

The new battle cry of the USMNT?

Through “I believe that we will win” has long been the supporters’ chant for U.S. Soccer, “It’s called soccer” gained popularity in the lead up to the Americans’ match vs. England and has stayed relevant.
