PlayStation Shutting Down PS4 Exclusive Next Year Making it Unplayable

Sony is shutting down a PS4 exclusive next year, making the PlayStation game unplayable in the process. The good news within this bad news is that the game isn’t being shut down until April 14, 2023, giving PlayStation gamers a bit more time to play the game and earn its various trophies. After this, it doesn’t matter if you downloaded the game in time as it will be completely unplayable as you have to be online to play the game.

The game in question is called Guns Up, a free-to-play action strategy game from Valkyrie Entertainment. As it’s published by Sony, the Playstation makers own the IP and it looks poised to never do anything with it ever again. Upon release, the game garnered middling reviews, earning a 54 on Metacritic. Not only did reviewers not like the game much, but consumers didn’t latch onto it in any significant way. Despite being free-to-play, Guns Up quickly struggled to attract and retain a player base when it was released on December 5, 2015. Of course, the game’s lackluster quality was the main contributor to this, but Sony’s borderline non-existent marketing for the game surely didn’t help either.

For the first three years of its existence, the game was a pure PS4 exclusive, but in 2018 it came to PC, and then in 2022 it came to mobile devices in what was now clearly a final hail mary to salvage the game.

If you’re playing the game in 2022, you’ll now have — in addition to six months left with the game — 50k of in-game gold gifted to your account before the end of the month. And that’s it.

“Multiplayer and all online features for Guns Up will be terminated and no longer available starting 4/14/23. As you have to be online to play this title, this game will not be playable starting 4/14/23,” reads a banner on the game’s official website. “50k gold will be gifted to all current accounts before the end of the month. Enjoy and thank you for the support!”

Assassin’s Creed Liberation Delisted & to Be Unplayable Even to Owners Starting September 1 on Steam

If you own Assassin’s Creed Liberation on Steam and have yet to finish it, you might want to do so soon, as the game isn’t just being delisted on the platform, it will even be inaccessible to everyone starting September 1!

This notice was posted on the Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD Steam page where the following was posted:

Yep, this means that even if you already own the game, you won’t be able to play it on Steam to complete it, which sucks, given, y’know, people paid for the game and all.

While hardly the jewel in the franchise’s long list of releases, AC Liberation was originally released on the PlayStation Vita back in 2012, and ties into Assassin’s Creed 3. It featured a black female protagonist, which is a first for the franchise, and saw an HD re-release on consoles and PC in 2014.

Here’s a description of the game over on Steam:

Introducing Assassin’s Creed® Liberation HD, the striking chapter of the pre-American Revolution Assassin’s Creed saga which arrives for the first time on HD consoles and PC. With improved gameplay, a deeper story, and HD graphics, Liberation is an immersive and full Assassin’s Creed experience.

This is yet another reason why owning digital games is frowned upon by some consumer groups, as you technically never own the game themselves given this thing can happen. While it’s fairly common for games to be delisted on digital storefronts, the title being unplayable completely is not. Let’s hope this isn’t the start of a trend, as it’ll seriously put a dent in anyone’s digital games library.

We’ve reached out to Ubisoft regarding this, and whether there’s a workaround planned or something. Do note that this doesn’t appear to be affecting the Remastered rerelease, though keep in mind that would require an additional purchase as the original release does not grant you access to it.

Thanks, Stomphulk!

‘Diablo Immortal’ is unplayable on some Samsung phones with Exynos chipsets

Nearly four years after it first announced the game, Blizzard released Diablo Immortal on Android, iOS and PC earlier this week. And shortly after the game made its way to mobile , players with Samsung phones took to Reddit and other community forums to complain about technical issues. On some devices with the company’s own in-house Exynos chipsets, Diablo Immortal is unplayable, with one of the most prominent issues being textures not loading properly.

“We are exploring the issues people are experiencing with some Samsung Galaxy specific devices that use Exynos chipsets,” a Blizzard spokesperson in a Reddit comment spotted by . “For now, we may disable downloads for this set of devices while we work to address this. Apologies on this and we will be working on getting a fix up and ready as soon as possible.”

Among the list of affected handsets include older devices like the Galaxy S10, Note 10 and A51 5G, but people with models as recent as the Galaxy S22 have also complained of texture issues. If you own a Qualcomm-equipped version of one of those phones, you can download and play the game without issue. You can check what chipset your phone features by navigating to the “About Phone” section of Android’s system settings.

‘Expired’ digital PS Vita and PS3 games rendered unplayable

Players on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are having trouble accessing their digital purchases after a strange expiration date suddenly appeared on certain games, as first reported by Kotaku. The problem seems to mostly affect classic titles, preventing users from playing Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VI, as the games are now “expired.”

But here’s the odd part: the expiration dates are dated half a century in the past. Twitter user Christopher Foose shared an image of his Chrono Cross download, which shows that the game expired on December 31st, 1969 at 7:20 PM. He says the issue only occurred after redownloading the game, and that he’s now unable to play it on PS3 and PS Vita.

GamesHub editor Edmond Tran similarly found he was unable to play Chrono Cross on the PS3 thanks to a 52-year-old expiration date. And while Tran says he could still play the classic title on his PS Vita, he wasn’t able to find the listing on the PS Vita store, a sign that Sony may have taken it down. Other users on Reddit and Twitter also reported the issue with Rune Factory Oceans, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and for some, their entire digital library.

As outlined in the various threads and posts about the problem, some players say they’ve tried factory resetting their consoles, subscribing and unsubscribing to PlayStation Plus, and restoring their game licenses, all to no avail. PlayStation has yet to acknowledge the situation, and the game company didn’t immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment.

There is one possible reason why this may be happening, though. Kotaku notes that the issue may stem from a glitch causing the PS Vita and PS3 to revert the game licenses’ expiration dates to the Unix epoch, or the arbitrary time and date set by developers to designate the beginning of a console’s life.

Even if this is just a glitch, it’s stoking concerns that Sony is dealing yet another blow to the PS3 and PS Vita stores. After the game company nearly closed down both stores last year, it made them harder to shop at by taking away the ability to use credit cards or PayPal to make purchases.

Injustice 2 has been unplayable for days across all platforms due to widespread crashing issue

It may take days for the problems to be resolved

Anyone who’s attempted to hop on to NetherRealm Studios’ previous fighting game these past few days has apparently been greeted with the complete inability to actually play it.

Injustice 2 is currently unplayable for most if not all users across PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms due to a crashing issue that stops the title from launching at all.

Players began to report around September 2 that the fighting game featuring DC Comics’ iconic heroes and villains would simply crash and exit upon trying to boot it up across all platforms.

The second Injustice title reportedly will not even reach the main menu screen, as it’ll fail to make it past the initial splash screens showing the NetherRealm and Warner Bros. logos before crashing and showing an error code.

The official Injustice Twitter account acknowledged the issues on Sep 3 stating they are aware of the widespread crashes and are currently looking into a solution.

They followed that up earlier today with an update stating the studio hopes to have more information available in the coming days, but no time estimate was given as to when players may be able to access the game again.

As things stand now, players have been unable to find their own workarounds to the constant crashes, as attempting to re-install Injustice 2 or rolling back drivers on PC does not appear to produce any better results.

Unless one can be found, owners of the game will likely need to sit tight and wait until NRS provides an official update on the matter.

While server issues preventing players from accessing online features are a fairly common occurrence in the modern gaming landscape where everything is connected to the internet, it is much more rare for a title to become inoperable entirely like what’s going on now.

Injustice 2 first released in 2017 where it continued to see support via DLC and updates, including the likes of Hellboy and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, until early-mid 2018.

We’ll be closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds and will update you when more information becomes available.

Skyrim Mod That Makes It Unplayable Removed From Nexus Mods

Image: Bethesda

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a popular game that millions of people are still playing a decade after it was first released. And thanks to mods and user-created content, some have dedicated years of their lives to playing this game. Bethesda’s insistence on re-releasing the iconic RPG likely isn’t helping anyone escape Skyrim’s vice grip, either. So one modder created a way out for those unable to stop playing. The mod, NoSkyrim, makes the Bethesda RPG unplayable once installed.

Made by ThatLittleCommie, that’s literally all the admittedly silly mod does. It doesn’t add extra characters, new weapons, or copyright infringing content like lightsabers or Thomas the Tank Engine. You install it and after that, you can no longer play Skyrim. It just crashes instead. Here’s how the mod’s creator describes the mod.

“Did you ever feel like the game which you spent your hard-earned money on, should be removed and be unplayable, well so did I. Now with NoSkyrim, instead of being able to start a new game like most Skyrim players, you just can’t.”

The mod was originally uploaded to popular modding site Nexus Mods. But it has since been removed for unclear — but probably easy to guess — reasons. I’d bet a mod that simply breaks Skyrim and makes it impossible to play isn’t something the folks running the site want on their mod depository. Kotaku has reached out to Nexus Mods about the removal and if NoSkyrim will ever return.

Currently, if you want to download this silly mod you can find it over at LoversLab.com, which is a uh… more adult modding site. It seems the folks at LoversLab don’t care if a Skyrim mod breaks the game and renders it unplayable.

As spotted by PCGamer, the mod currently has a Change.org petition that folks can sign to support it being readded to Nexus Mods. As of this writing, it has nearly 350 signatures. Meanwhile, a subreddit dedicated to the mod and its return to the Nexus site has also popped up. It has just over 260 members. The top post is a smiling image of Todd Howard, Bethesda’s director, and executive producer. Other posts include people lamenting the mod’s removal as it was the only thing keeping them from playing the decade-old open-world RPG. (These posts are jokes, if you hadn’t figured it out yet.)

For now, it seems NoSkyrim will not return to Nexus Mods. It’s a sad day for folks unable to uninstall a video game or who have no self-control. Meanwhile, Bethesda is still announcing ports of Skyrim in 2021. I wonder if the latest port will work (or cease to work) with the NoSkyrim mod?
