Brittney Griner dunks in first workout since release from Russian prison, basketball future still unknown

Brittney Griner picked up a basketball on Sunday afternoon at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, marking the first time the Phoenix Mercury star had done so in about 10 months.

Instantly, she threw down a dunk.

Griner has no plans to leave Fort Sam Houston anytime soon, her agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas told ESPN on Sunday night. She landed there early on Friday morning, shortly after she was released from a Russian prison, ending a nearly 300-day ordeal.

When she does leave, Griner and her wife Cherelle will reportedly head to a private location — not their Phoenix home. It’s unclear when she’ll speak, but Colas said there may be a statement in the coming days.

“There’s no timeline on her return at this point. She’s reintegrating into a world that has changed for her now,” Colas said, via ESPN. “From a pure security standpoint she’s not going to be able to move in the world the way she did. It’s not a fate that she asked for, but I think she’s going to try to utilize her fame for good.”

Griner was released from a Russian penal colony last week after the United States struck a deal in exchange for convicted arms trafficker Viktor Bout. The deal was finalized on Thursday, and Griner reportedly spoke with American officials and the flight crew for nearly 12 hours on their flight from the United Arab Emirates. After listening to Russian nearly nonstop, Griner insisted on talking about “everything under the sun.”

Since she’s been in San Antonio, Griner has received a haircut from the San Antonio Spurs’ barber — she cut her long hair a few weeks ago after it kept freezing in the penal colony — and has been reuniting with family at the army base’s “distinguished guest quarters.” She’s had plenty of barbecue, and Nike sent her a new wardrobe.

It’s still unclear what’s next for Griner, especially when it comes to her playing career.

That, though, feels like it should be the least of her worries.

“If she wants to play, it will be for her to share. She has the holidays to rest and decide what’s next without any pressure,” Colas said, via ESPN. “She’s doing really, really well. She seems to have endured this in pretty incredible ways.”

Nas’ Calabasas Home Robbed, Thieves Took 2 Bags Full Of Unknown Items – HotNewHipHop

Nas’ weekend started off on a high note thanks to the arrival of his King’s Disease III album in collaboration with Hit-Boy. However, that joy was short-lived as on Saturday (November 12), his Calabasas home was robbed by two thieves.

Law enforcement sources broke the news to TMZ, revealing that the break-in took place about 8:30 PM PT last night. It’s been noted that the criminals seemingly smashed a rear door, allowing them entry into the rapper’s luxury home.

Nas’ team realized something was happening thanks to a Ring camera installed on the property. As they were leaving, the “Hood2Hood” artist’s crew caught sight of them and promptly called the police to the scene.

The robbers were long gone when cops arrived at the prolific lyricist’s home. Luckily, he wasn’t home. Rather, Nas was across the country in New York City, partying it up to celebrate the arrival of KD3.

Currently, it remains unknown exactly what the thieves took, or how much it was worth. All that’s been confirmed is that the 49-year-old’s place was torn apart, and approximately two bags worth of stuff is missing.

Since he’s still out of town, investigators must wait for Nas to return and do a proper inventory of the items that were stolen. No arrests have been made at this time by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

While this has surely put a damper on his otherwise exciting weekend, the Illmatic artist still has a lot to celebrate. Several songs from King’s Disease III have been making headlines, whether for praising Kendrick Lamar or shading Pete Rock.

In other news, Nas and Hit-Boy’s new album got plenty of love on our weekly Fire Emoji update. Stream that exclusively on Spotify here, and check out HNHH later for more celebrity news updates.

A Previously Unknown Ability of the Autonomic Nervous System

Summary: The autonomic nervous system has the ability to spontaneously restore muscle function following nerve injury.

Source: Medical University of Vienna

The autonomic nervous system is known as the control center for involuntary bodily processes such as the beating of our hearts and our breathing.

The fact that this part of the nervous system also has the ability to spontaneously restore muscle function following a nerve injury was discovered by a research group at MedUni Vienna’s Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery as part of their study recently published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Their findings may form the basis for improving and developing interventions to treat nerve lesions.

The research team led by Vlad Tereshenko and Oskar Aszmann from the Clinical Laboratory for Bionic Limb Reconstruction at MedUni Vienna’s Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery discovered this facet of the interaction between nerves and muscles—which was previously unknown to science—in the course of its preclinical research on facial nerves and muscles.

After a nerve has been injured or severed, it is no longer able to control the motor function of the facial muscles, resulting in facial paralysis in the animal model.

In some cases, the scientists observed spontaneous recovery of muscle function days or weeks after the nerve lesion. Using novel, complex techniques, they were able to establish that the autonomic nervous system takes over the function of the injured nerve, as it were.

“Until now, we were unaware that the autonomic nervous system can control muscle motor function with nerve impulses. As we have seen in our experiments, the parasympathetic nerve fibers form new functional neuromuscular synapses to do this.

Schematic illustration of aberrant parasympathetic reinnervation of denervated facial muscles. Following facial nerve transection, ipsilateral whisker pad showed spontaneous movement 12 weeks after the denervation. Harvested dilator naris muscle showed muscle fiber change after denervation. The reinnervating fibers were traced to the parasympathetic neural source in the pterygopalatine ganglion. The route of the parasympathetic fibers was established by electrophysiological testing via the sensory infraorbital nerve. Credit: The researchers

“At the same time, the patterns of the muscle fibers are modified and, hence, the physiological properties of the autonomously reinnervated muscles are changed,” explains first author Vlad Tereshenko, outlining the key findings from the study.

Potential actor in nerve reconstruction

Following injuries or certain diseases, nerves can temporarily or permanently lose their ability to provide motor control to muscles. Well-established therapeutic concepts such as the relocation of nerves or nerve transplants are now available to remedy the resultant motor deficits.

However, clinical outcomes may be affected by several factors, such as the slow rate of nerve regeneration or the lack of donor nerves.

“By identifying this previously unknown ability of the autonomic nervous system, we have discovered a new potential actor in nerve reconstruction. The results of our study can therefore help to improve existing therapeutic measures and to develop new ones,” says Vlad Tereshenko, looking into the future.

Follow-up studies are expected to deepen our knowledge of this new facet of the neuromuscular system.

One of the questions to be addressed is whether and how autonomic nerve fibers can be surgically relocated in order to restore muscle function on a temporary or permanent basis.

Abstract

Autonomic nerve fibers aberrantly reinnervate denervated facial muscles and alter muscle fiber population

The surgical redirection of efferent neural input to a denervated muscle via a nerve transfer can reestablish neuromuscular control after nerve injuries.

The role of autonomic nerve fibers during the process of muscular reinnervation remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the neurobiological mechanisms behind the spontaneous functional recovery of denervated facial muscles in male rodents.

Recovered facial muscles demonstrated an abundance of cholinergic axonal endings establishing functional neuromuscular junctions. The parasympathetic source of the neuronal input was confirmed to be in the pterygopalatine ganglion.

Furthermore, the autonomically reinnervated facial muscles underwent a muscle fiber change to a purely intermediate muscle fiber population myosin heavy chain type IIa.

Finally, electrophysiological tests revealed that the postganglionic parasympathetic fibers travel to the facial muscles via the sensory infraorbital nerve.

Our findings demonstrated expanded neuromuscular plasticity of denervated striated muscles enabling functional recovery via alien autonomic fibers.

These findings may further explain the underlying mechanisms of sensory protection implemented to prevent atrophy of a denervated muscle.

Probe Detects “Unknown Features” Inside Martian Moon Phobos

What lurks beneath?

New Features

The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Mars Express orbiter may be old — it launched back in 2003 — but it’s still uncovering new clues.

Equipped with a new software upgrade to its Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) instrument, the veteran spacecraft has now taken a deeper look into Phobos, one of Mars’ moons whose origins remain an enigma to astronomers.

“We are still at an early stage in our analysis,” said Andrea Cicchetti, a MARSIS team member from Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics, in a press release. “But we have already seen possible signs of previously unknown features below the moon’s surface. We are excited to see the role that MARSIS might play in finally solving the mystery surrounding Phobos’ origin.”

Mysterious Moon

Phobos, along with Deimos, are Mars’ two diminutive moons, ominously named after the Greek gods of fear and panic.

Neither, it’s worth noting, is particularly moon-like. They’re both small, with Phobos being less than 17 miles in diameter, and look more like lumpy asteroids than a spherical moon like Earth’s.

These strange but fascinating characteristics, along with their suspected asteroid-like compositions, have long split astronomers on their origins.

“Whether Mars’ two small moons are captured asteroids or made of material ripped from Mars during a collision is an open question,” said Mars Express scientist Colin Wilson in the release. “Their appearance suggests they were asteroids, but the way they orbit Mars arguably suggests otherwise.”

Moonlighting

That’s where MARSIS comes in. With an antenna over 130 feet long, MARSIS is capable of shooting low frequency radio waves that can penetrate deep into Phobos’ core. While many of the waves don’t make it past the surface, the ones that do make it bounce between the internal structures and boundaries of differing materials in the mini-moon’s interior.

Examining these reflections, captured in a “radargram,” could paint scientists a better picture of Phobos’ sub-surface structures, as well as its overall composition. Bright lines in the radargram indicate more or less innocuous surface reflections, but the scientists say there’s evidence of fainter, “lower reflections” that could be signs of subterranean structures.

To get to the bottom of this mystery, the ESA will be collaborating with the Japanese Space Agency to collect samples from Phobos’ surface in the Martian Moon Exploration (MMX) mission, currently set to launch in 2024.
