Bill Belichick doesn’t commit to Mac Jones as Patriots’ QB: ‘I don’t know’ if he’ll start once healthy

Getty Images

Mac Jones has been bruised and battered in his second year as the Patriots’ quarterback. And now his starting job might be in jeopardy. The 2021 first-rounder has missed New England’s last two games with a high-ankle sprain, and while ESPN reports he has a “decent chance” of returning in Week 6 against the Browns, coach Bill Belichick would not confirm Jones’ availability while addressing reporters Wednesday. Not only that, but Belichick wouldn’t commit to Jones remaining the starter under center.

“We’ll see,” the coach said when asked if Jones will reclaim his QB1 role once healthy. “I don’t know.”

Belichick, to be clear, would not elaborate on much of anything related to the Patriots’ QB situation. Asked if Jones’ ankle is healing enough to warrant a return against Cleveland, he declined to comment until after Wednesday’s practice, saying, “We’ll see what it looks like today and go from there.” He did deny, however, that the timeline for Jones’ return has been influenced by the performance of emergency starter Bailey Zappe, calling the latter’s efficient outings against the Packers and Lions “totally independent” of Jones’ rehabilitation.

On the flip side, this isn’t the first time Belichick has left the door open for Zappe, a fourth-round draft pick this year, to potentially start in place of Jones regardless of injury.

“I’m not going to get into a lot of hypotheticals on all those different things that might or might not happen,” Belichick told WEEI earlier this week. “That’s just, to me, a waste of time. I’m not going to sit around and dream up scenarios and all of that. We’ll take things as they come and go from there.”

Zappe has thrown two touchdowns and one interception, while completing 75 percent of his throws, filling in for Jones and veteran backup Brian Hoyer, whose relief efforts were short-lived due to a head injury. Jones, meanwhile, struggled to open 2022 even before hurting his ankle, enduring back spasms and throwing five interceptions during New England’s 1-2 start.

Yankees vs. Guardians score: Live updates from ALDS Game 1 as New York, Aaron Judge start playoff run

The New York Yankees are hosting the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday for Game 1 of the best-of-five American League Division Series. The Yankees started ace Gerrit Cole on the mound, but the Guardians were able to take an early lead when rookie Steve Kwan hit a solo home run in the third inning. Harrison Bader tied the game for New York with a solo shot of his own in the third off righty starter Cal Quantrill. Here’s how to watch Game 1.

The AL Central-champion Guardians got to this spot by sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays in two games in the opening-round Wild Card Series. They were the only home team to win any of the four Wild Card Series. Meantime, the Yankees arrived here via first-round bye, which they earned by being one of the two top division winners in the AL. As you would imagine, the Game 1 stakes are high, as the winner of the opener in a best-of-five MLB postseason series goes on to win that series 71.3 percent of the time.

Below you’ll find our live updates and running analysis of Game 1 between Cleveland and the Yanks.

Dow futures fall 170 points to start week with key inflation data, earnings ahead

Stock futures are lower Sunday night as the markets come out of a tumultuous week and traders look ahead to key reports coming in the next week that can offer insights into the health of the economy.

Futures connected to the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.6% to 29,175 points. S&P 500 futures dropped 0.7% to 3,626.25 points, while Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.8% to 11,014.25 points.

Market observers generally consider the week ahead as the kickoff to earnings season, with four of the world’s largest banks – JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley and Citi – reporting Friday. PepsiCo, Delta and Domino’s are also among companies reporting next week.

Inflation will also take center stage as new monthly Consumer Price Index data comes Thursday morning.

It will follow a week of whiplash for market participants. The first half brought a relief rally that pushed the S&P 500 up more than 5% in its largest two-day gain since 2020.

But jobs data that economists say will keep the Federal Reserve on a path to continue raising interest rates and OPEC+’s decision to slash oil supply rattled investors, diluting wins later in the week. When day trading ended Friday, the S&P was up 1.5% compared to where it started the week. The Dow and Nasdaq were up 1.5% and 0.7%, respectively.

Still, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq had the first positive week in the last four. All remain down substantially so far in 2022, however, and the Nasdaq is less than 1% away from its 52-week low.

Meanwhile, the 2-year Treasury yield rose 6 basis points, closing at 4.316%. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01%.

“The direction of the stock market is likely to be lower because either the economy and corporate profits are going to slow meaningfully or the Fed is going to have to raise rates even higher and keep them higher for longer,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Independent Advisor Alliance, on Friday.

“Given the conditions that we are operating under, we believe it’s prudent to begin preparing for a recession,” he added. “The talk of a shallow recession that is now the narrative-du-jour strikes us as eerily similar to the ‘inflation is transitory’ narrative of last year.”

Last week brought heightened concerns that corporate earnings will show the ugly side of a surging dollar as Levi Strauss became the latest to cut guidance due to sliding international sales.

Bills vs. Steelers score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, analysis for Kenny Pickett’s first NFL start

We’ve got a classic David vs. Goliath scenario on our hands in Buffalo. The Bills came into Sunday’s game as a whopping 14-point favorite over the Steelers, who are ushering in a new era with rookie Kenny Pickett making his first start as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback after coming on in relief last week.

The Bills were a big favorite for good reason. Buffalo is 3-1 and came into Sunday’s game ranked second in the NFL in second defense and fifth in scoring offense. The Steelers, meanwhile, struggled to move the ball on offense through four games. Pittsburgh also still hasn’t found a way to be successful without T.J. Watt, as the Steelers are 0-7 all-time in games without the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

Will the Bills cover the spread while making the Steelers 0-8 without Watt, or will Pickett lead Pittsburgh’s biggest upset since the Steelers’ successful 2005 playoff run? Check out our live blow below throughout Sunday’s game to find out.

2022 WWE Extreme Rules results: Live updates, recap, grades, matches, card, start time, highlights

WWE is getting hardcore at Extreme Rules. The promotion touches down in Philadelphia on Saturday night with six matches all contested under special stipulations incentivizing violence, a significant departure from how this event was built just one year ago under a different creative regime.

A trilogy match between Liv Morgan and Ronda Rousey is expected to headline the card with Extreme Rules stipulations at play.  Morgan, the SmackDown women’s champion, has won both of their previous encounters; however, both outcomes were less than decisive. Extreme Rules also features a number of stipulations atypical to WWE: an MMA-themed Fight Pit between (one-time UFC star) Matt Riddle and Seth Rollins, a strap match between Drew McIntyre and Karrion Kross, and an Irish-themed Donnybrook match, among others.

WWE Extreme Rules will be presented live on Saturday evening from Wells Fargo Center. It is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET with a kickoff show starting one hour earlier at 7 p.m. on Peacock. CBS Sports will be with you the whole way through the event, providing updates and highlights as the action goes down in the live blog below.

2022 WWE Extreme Rules match card

  • SmackDown Women’s Championship: Liv Morgan vs. Ronda Rousey (Extreme Rules)
  • Raw Women’s Championship: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Bayley (Ladder Match)
  • Matt Riddle vs. Seth Rollins (Fight Pitch)
    Special guest referee: Daniel Cormier
  • Edge vs. Finn Balor (“I Quit” Match)
  • Drew McIntyre vs. Karrion Kross (Strap Match)
  • The Brawling Brutes vs. Imperium (Good Ol’ Fashioned Donnybrook)

Alabama Crimson Tide star quarterback Bryce Young does not start against Texas A&M Aggies

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama star quarterback Bryce Young did not start Saturday night’s game against Texas A&M as he continues to deal with shoulder soreness in his throwing arm.

Young dressed out and was one of three team captains for the game but did not attempt any passes during pregame warm-ups. Shortly before kickoff, Young was announced in the stadium as the starter.

Instead, Jalen Milroe, who scored two touchdowns in relief of Young during last weekend’s win at Arkansas, got the start.

Young, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and a possible first-round pick in next year’s NFL draft, was injured during the first half at Arkansas when he scrambled, was tackled and landed on his throwing shoulder.

Saban told ESPN on Thursday that there was no structural damage done to Young’s shoulder. Saban said the injury is not expected to keep Young out long term.

Young took reps at practice this week but was limited throwing the football.

Saban consistently said throughout the week that Young’s availability would be evaluated daily and that the decision whether or not to play would be done in consultation with Young and the medical staff.

“He’s the only one who knows how he feels because it’s going to be a pain-tolerance thing,” Saban said on Thursday. “He’s a tough kid and great competitor. We’ll see where he is on game day.”

A redshirt freshman from Texas, Milroe threw for 65 yards and a touchdown against Arkansas. He also rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown.

No. 1 Alabama goes on the road to No. 8 Tennessee next Saturday.

Saints to start QB Andy Dalton; WR Michael Thomas still out

METAIRIE, La. — The New Orleans Saints (1-3) are preparing to start backup quarterback Andy Dalton against the Seattle Seahawks (2-2) on Sunday, according to coach Dennis Allen.

Saints quarterback Jameis Winston is doubtful after missing all three practices for the second straight week. Winston did not play in the Saints 28-25 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London last week because of a back injury.

“I think he’s getting better. … but I think the most important thing is to get him healthy so we’re not riding that roller coaster each and every week,” Allen said.

Allen said wide receiver Michael Thomas, who missed last week’s game, will also sit this week. Wide receiver Jarvis Landry is questionable after missing Friday’s practice.

“Jarvis is listed as questionable but I actually feel pretty good about that,” Allen said.

Running back Alvin Kamara, who didn’t play last week, has already said that he feels good to go despite a lingering rib injury.

“I’m feeling great, healthy, ready to roll. So I’m going to be out there,” Kamara said earlier in the week.

Dalton completed 20 of 28 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown in the loss last week. He was sacked twice.

“I feel pretty good about where I’m at in this offense and just the understanding of everything,” Dalton said. “So, now for us, it’s just going out and executing and making sure everybody is on the same page.”

Covid wave looms in Europe as booster campaign makes slow start

A new Covid-19 wave appears to be brewing in Europe as cooler weather arrives, with public health experts warning that vaccine fatigue and confusion over types of shots available will likely limit booster uptake.

Omicron subvariants BA.4/5 that dominated this summer are still behind the majority of infections, but newer Omicron subvariants are gaining ground. Hundreds of new forms of Omicron are being tracked by scientists, World Health Organization (WHO) officials said this week.

WHO data released late on Wednesday showed that cases in the European Union reached 1.5 million last week, up 8% from the prior week, despite a dramatic fall in testing. Globally, case numbers continue to decline.

Hospitalization numbers across many countries in the 27-nation bloc, as well as Britain, have gone up in recent weeks.

In the week ending October 4, Covid-19 hospital admissions with symptoms jumped nearly 32% in Italy, while intensive care admissions rose about 21%, compared to the week before, according to data compiled by independent scientific foundation Gimbe.

Over the same week, Covid hospitalizations in Britain saw a 45% increase versus the week earlier.

Omicron-adapted vaccines have launched in Europe as of September, with two types of shots addressing the BA.1 as well as the BA.4/5 subvariants made available alongside existing first-generation vaccines. In Britain, only the BA.1-tailored shots have been given the green light.

European and British officials have endorsed the latest boosters only for a select groups of people, including the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Complicating matters further is the “choice” of vaccine as a booster, which will likely add to confusion, public health experts said.

But willingness to get yet another shot, which could be a fourth or fifth for some, is wearing thin.

“For those who may be less concerned about their risk, the messaging that it is all over coupled with the lack of any major publicity campaign is likely to reduce uptake,” said Martin McKee, professor of European public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “So on balance I fear that uptake will be quite a bit lower.”

Penny Ward, visiting professor in pharmaceutical medicine at King’s College London, said: “Another confounder is that quite a high proportion of the population might have also had a Covid episode in recent months.”

Some may erroneously feel that having had a complete primary course and then having fallen ill with Covid means they will remain immune, she added.

Since September 5, when the roll-out of new vaccines began in the European Union, about 40 million vaccine doses produced by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have been delivered to member states, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

However, weekly vaccine doses administered in the EU were only between 1 million and 1.4 million during September, compared with 6-10 million per week during the year-earlier period, ECDC data showed.

Perhaps the biggest challenge to uptake is the perception that the pandemic is over, creating a false sense of security.

“There must be some complacency in that life seems to have gone back to normal – at least with regards Covid and people now have other financial and war-related worries,” said Adam Finn, chair of ETAGE, an expert group advising the WHO on vaccine preventable diseases in Europe.

He added that some law-makers, too, were dropping the ball.

Italy’s Gimbe science foundation said the government, soon to be replaced after an election, was ill prepared for the autumn-winter season, and highlighted that a publication on the government’s management of the pandemic had been blocked.

The health ministry declined to comment.

Meanwhile, British officials last week warned that renewed circulation of flu and a resurgence in Covid-19 could pile pressure on the already stretched National Health Service.

Xbox Game Pass Surprisingly Loaded To Start October 2022

Screenshot: Asobo Studio / Focus Entertainment

The spooky season is upon us and a lowkey stacked October for Xbox Game Pass is bringing the rat kings, H. R. Giger body horror, and twee trick-or-treating to celebrate. Whether you just want to go medieval against online strangers in Chivalry 2 or bask in the striking beauty of A Plague Tale: Requiem’s beautifully grim depiction of war-torn 14th century France, Microsoft’s Netflix-like subscription service has plenty to offer this month.

Here’s everything coming to and leaving Xbox Game Pass in the coming weeks:

October 4

Chivalry 2 (Cloud, Console, and PC)

October 6

Medieval Dynasty (Xbox Series X/S)

The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season (PC)

The Walking Dead: Season Two (PC)

October 11

Costume Quest (Cloud and Console)

Eville (Console and PC)

October 13

Dyson Sphere Program (PC)

October 14

Scorn (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S)

October 18

A Plague Tale: Requiem (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S)

Released last year, Chivalry 2 is a first-person multiplayer fighter where players swing, slash, and claw their way to victory on a medieval battlefield. It’s daunting but a lot of fun once you loosen up and give yourself permission to have fun and be silly. A perfect addition to the low-stakes Game Pass buffet. Scorn, meanwhile, is the debut release from Ebb Software about exploring a mysterious world full of stomach churning and fleshy phenomena. It’s been delayed a bunch and a flashpoint for Kickstarter drama, but hopefully it delivers.

I’ll try not to hold a pillow up in front of my face too much while playing Scorn.

A Plague Tale: Requiem, on the other hand, is Asobo Studio’s follow-up to 2019’s disturbing rat infestation, A Plague Tale: Innocence. Hopefully everyone got a chance to check that out before it fell out of the Game Pass rotation last month. It was a moody adventure game that didn’t overplay its hand, and while Requiem seems slated to build out the game’s action, I hope it stays grounded. And if you have a PC, Dyson Sphere Program is one of 2021’s best spacefaring basebuilders.

Game Pass is also losing some games in the next few weeks, but fortunately nothing too devastating. The following are all gone as of October 15:

  • Bloodroots (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Echo Generation (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Into The Pit (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Ring of Pain (Cloud, Console, and PC)
