Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Off to Record-Breaking Start in U.S. – Billboard

Taylor Swift’s Midnights is off to a record-breaking start in the U.S. after its first day in release.

According to initial reports to Luminate, the album, which was released on Oct. 21, has sold more than 800,000 copies in the U.S. through its first day across all available formats (multiple digital album download, CD, vinyl and cassette variants). It has already logged the largest sales week for any album since 2017, is the top-selling album of 2022 year-to-date, and has set a modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales.

Luminate’s data powers Billboard’s weekly charts.

2022’s Top-Selling Album After One Day: Midnights’ initial sales sum already makes it the biggest-selling album of 2022 year-to-date. Previously, 2022’s top-selling album, year-to-date, was Harry Styles’ Harry’s House, with 620,000 copies sold through the week ending Oct. 13.

It’s assumed that Midnights’ sales figure will increase in the coming days, as the tracking week ends on Thursday, Oct. 27. The set’s final sales number is expected to be announced on Sunday, Oct. 30, along with its expected large debut on the multi-metric Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Nov. 4). If Midnights debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will mark Swift’s 11th chart-topping effort.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each units equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

News of initial streaming-and-track-equivalent activity for the album, as provided by Luminate, will reported in the coming days.

Biggest Sales Week for Any Album Since Swift’s reputation in 2017: With just one day of sales, Midnights logs the largest sales week for any album in the U.S. since Swift’s own reputation debuted with 1.216 million copies sold in its first week (ending Nov. 16, 2017).

Reputation was also the last album to sell more than 1 million copies in a single week in the U.S., a feat that has become difficult to achieve in recent years as consumers transition to consuming music through streaming services. (Yearly U.S. album sales decreased in every year from 2012-2020.)

Since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991, there have only been 23 instances – by 21 different albums – where an album sold at least 1 million copies in a single week. One of those albums, Adele’s 25, sold over 1 million in three separate weeks.

Modern-Era Vinyl Sales Record: Further, Midnights handily breaks the modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales in the U.S., with over 400,000 copies sold so far. That’s the largest week for an album on vinyl since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. It surpasses the previous high, set earlier this year, when Harry’s House debuted with 182,000 vinyl copies (week ending May 26, 2021).

Midnights’ overall initial sales figures include any pre-orders of the album that were fulfilled to the customer through Oct. 21, as well as traditional in-store sales that were generated on the day of release.

Midnights arrived after months of pre-release promotion and pre-orders – and its initial sales figure is bolstered by an array of available versions and variants of the album.

Midnights is available to purchase in a standard digital album (both clean and explicit), an iTunes-exclusive version with a bonus track (clean and explicit), four standard CD editions (each with a different cover, both clean and explicit), four vinyl LP editions (each with a different cover and colored vinyl) and a cassette tape.

Target is also selling an exclusive “Lavender” edition of the album on CD and colored-vinyl LP, with the CD boasting three bonus tracks.

In addition, in the weeks leading up to release, Swift’s webstore sold pre-orders of signed copies of the four standard CD albums and the four standard vinyl LPs. Midnights is also available in a deluxe boxed set with a CD edition of the album and a Swift-branded T-shirt, exclusively for Capital One cardholders.

Three hours after Midnights arrived, Swift issued a deluxe edition of the album with seven bonus songs (20 tracks total) to streaming services and digital retailers (with the later including a digital liner notes booklet).

UFC 280 — Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev: Fight card, odds, start time, location, complete guide, date

Getty Images

The UFC is back in Abu Dhabi. The promotion is set to host UFC 280 on Saturday night from the now famous Yas Island with arguably its deepest fight card of the year in tow. Headlining this massive event is a lightweight title bout between former champion Charles Oliveira and rising contender Islam Makhachev. The pair have won a combined 21 fights in a row and both posses incredible ground games that lead to finishes.

“I just prepare for the hard fight always,” Makhachev told CBS Sports. “I don’t want to say this will be an easy match or something like that because I have to give this guy respect. He has come from a hard life. A hard way because he has many hard fights in the UFC. He did not from the easy way.

“I have to respect Charles but I cannot respect some people like Michael Chandler who talk too much. Who has [Chandler] beat? He beat just Tony Ferguson, who almost retired — he has to retire but he’s still fighting. And he beat Dan Hooker. [Chandler] is 2-2 in the UFC and he keeps trying to get a title fight. It’s not working like that.”

In addition to the wild main event, the co-feature also sees a title on the line in a matchup sure to grab fan’s eyes. Bantamweight king Aljamain Sterling is set to take on former titleholder TJ Dillashaw. It will be Sterling’s second defense of the 135-pound title and first since his two-fight series with Petr Yan. Dillashaw is back after undergoing knee surgery in 2021 and serving a two-year USADA suspension that cost him the title.

Resident Evil Showcase start time

The Resident Evil Showcase will stream at 6 PM ET / 3 PM PT.

  • 3 PM PT
  • 5 PM CT
  • 6 PM ET
  • 11 PM BST

While we don’t know a ton about the showcase, we do know it’ll feature updates on the two biggest RE projects currently in development, the Resident Evil 4 remake and the upcoming Resident Evil Village Gold Edition.

That new edition of Village will include several pieces of DLC, which will add a third-person mode to its campaign, as well as several new characters to its Mercenaries mode. Those new characters include Chris Redfield, the mechanically-minded Karl Heisenberg, and the towering Lady Dimitrescu. Additionally, the Winters’ Expansion DLC will continue the story of Village through the perspective of Ethan’s daughter Rose Winters.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is the bigger-ticket item here, as we still know comparatively little about it. Capcom has previously confirmed that it will be a “re-imagining” of the classic action game, and that it will be comparable to the recent Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes. Still no word on a Code Veronica remake, though we can certainly hope.

Fantasy Football Rankings for Week 7, 2022: Model says start Brandon Aiyuk, but sit Terry McLaurin

The Week 7 Fantasy football matchups bring plenty of tough questions for owners as they set their Fantasy football lineups. Should you go with a more proven option like Packers running back Aaron Jones, who faces a tough Washington Commanders defensive front? Should you roll the dice on a lower-owned, high-upside option in your Fantasy football strategy like Lions RB Jamaal Williams, who’s scored four total touchdowns in his last three outings?

Is a player like quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who’s expected to start after missing multiple games due to a concussion, safe to rely on in your Week 7 Fantasy football picks? These are the types of questions owners will have to answer before locking in their Week 7 Fantasy football rankings. Before setting your Fantasy football lineups, be sure to check out the Week 7 Fantasy football rankings from the advanced computer model at SportsLine.

When it comes to ranking players, SportsLine’s model beat human experts in Fantasy football for the past several seasons especially when there were big differences in ranking. Over the course of a season, that could literally be the difference between winning your league or going home empty-handed.

Last week, the model was extremely high on Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson, saying he’d finish as a top-10 player at his position. The result: Stevenson recorded 19 carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win over the Browns. He also brought in four of five targets for 15 yards. Anybody who had him in their lineup was well on their way to a huge week.

Now, the model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, has revealed its Fantasy football rankings for Week 7 of the 2022 NFL season. Head to SportsLine now to see them.

Top Week 7 Fantasy football picks

One player the model is high on this week: 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. San Francisco suffered a surprising setback against the Atlanta Falcons last week, but Aiyuk had his best performance of the season. The 24-year-old hauled in eight receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns in the defeat.

Aiyuk has been targeted eight or more times in three of his last five outings, and that trend is expected to continue this week with the 49ers taking on the Chiefs. If San Francisco falls behind early, the 49ers will be forced to throw the ball to keep pace with Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense. That’s one of the main reasons why the model ranks Aiyuk as a top-20 wide receiver this week, making him a rock-solid WR2 option against the Chiefs. See who else to target here.

And a massive shocker: Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who’s recorded at least 75 receiving yards in three of his last five games, stumbles big-time and doesn’t even crack the top 20 at his position. McLaurin’s stat line against the Bears may be a bit deceiving at first glance. He finished with just three receptions for 41 yards in the Commanders’ 12-7 win over the Bears, but McLaurin was responsible for nearly half of Carson Wentz’s 99 passing yards.

However, Wentz suffered a fractured finger in the win and he’s expected to miss four to six weeks, which doesn’t bode well for McLaurin’s Fantasy value. Plus, McLaurin and the Commanders will face Green Bay’s top-ranked passing defense this week, which is giving up just 164.0 passing yards per game this season. With such a tough matchup on Sunday, McLaurin is a player to consider putting on the bench in Week 7. See who else to fade here.

How to set Week 7 Fantasy football rankings

The model is also calling for a surprising quarterback you aren’t even thinking about to finish in the top 10 of its Week 7 Fantasy football rankings. This pick could be the difference between winning big and going home with nothing. You can only see who it is here.

So who should you start and sit this week? And which surprising quarterback could lead you to victory? Visit SportsLine now to get Week 7 Fantasy football rankings for every position, plus see which QB is going to come out of nowhere to crack the top 10, all from the model that has outperformed experts big-time.

WHO Warns of Surge in Chronic Disease by 2030 If People Don’t Start Exercising

Image: Timothy A. Clary (Getty Images)

A new report from the World Health Organization finds that our collective lack of exercise will exact a heavy toll in the years to come if nothing changes. The report estimates that there will be nearly a half-billion new cases of noncommunicable disorders like heart disease and diabetes due to physical inactivity by 2030. It also found that many countries are doing little to help people stay active, such as building safer walkable roads.

The findings come from the WHO’s first ever global status report on physical activity. It analyzes data from 194 countries on how often people are physically active and the policies put in place by countries to promote physical activity. As part of the report, the authors also calculated the potential effects on healthcare systems if people’s level of exercise stayed the same up through 2030. These latter estimates will be published in an upcoming paper but can be viewed in a preprint from the Lancet that was released last week.

Often, more than one factor contributes to a person’s heart disease or other noncommunicable disorder (NCD), and only some of these risk factors are preventable or can change for the better. But many studies have shown that any amount of exercise, no matter a person’s age, can help people stay healthier. Based on other research, the authors tried to calculate the fraction of preventable NCDs strongly tied to a lack of physical activity that would emerge over the next decade, focusing specifically on seven major conditions: heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers, dementia, and depression.

Overall, the authors estimated that almost 500 million new cases of these conditions would occur between 2020 and 2030 worldwide. These cases would also rack up around $300 billion (USD) in direct medical costs during that time period and about $27 billion annually by 2030. Most of these cases (about 74%) would occur in low-to-middle income countries, but the economic costs would be greater in higher-income countries (about 64%).

“This study calls for urgent actions by countries to prioritize investments in interventions that reduce this modifiable risk factor,” the authors wrote.

So far, though, it appears that most countries are falling far short of these investments. The WHO report found less than half of countries even have a national physical activity policy. Only 30% of countries have stated national physical activity guidelines for all age groups. And while most countries do have some way of tracking how active adults are, less than 30% do the same for children younger than 5. The implementation of many of these policies, such as nationally organized running or walking events, have been further disturbed by the covid-19 pandemic, the report authors note.

There are a multitude of reasons why people aren’t as physically active as they could be, and many of those are out of people’s control, such as the kind of job and working hours they have. But the report also highlights the actions that governments are failing to take to encourage a more active lifestyle for residents. Only 40% of countries, for instance, have standards for designing roads that would make walking and biking safer.

“We need more countries to scale up implementation of policies to support people to be more active through walking, cycling, sport, and other physical activity. The benefits are huge, not only for the physical and mental health of individuals, but also for societies, environments, and economies,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, in a statement announcing the report. “We hope countries and partners will use this report to build more active, healthier, and fairer societies for all.”

Some of the recommendations provided by the WHO to encourage physical activity include more public open spaces, walkable roads and other infrastructure, and more sports or gym activities in school. There’s also a need for better data collection, since there’s little known about people’s access to parks and other ways to help people become more active.

Charlie Morton exits NLDS Game 4 start after 2 innings

PHILADELPHIA — Just like the last time he made a high-stakes start in the postseason, the biggest blow against the Braves’ Charlie Morton came via a comebacker.

And Game 4 starter Charlie Morton, the winningest pitcher in Major League history in postseason elimination games, was knocked down and eventually out on Saturday afternoon after taking a line drive off his throwing arm in the decisive third inning of the Braves’ season-ending 8-3 loss at Citizens Bank Park.

Just like that, the defending World Series champions — 101-game winners during the regular season and NL East champs for the fifth consecutive season — were out.

“Losing stinks,” said Morton, who has already signed with Atlanta for 2023. “Especially when you get a chance to finally taste the win.”

This was not the way the Braves drew up the series. Their starters ranked third of 15 NL teams in innings pitched during the regular season (890 1/3) and fifth in ERA (3.72), but their NLDS quartet combined to surrender 14 runs (12 earned) on 17 hits in 13 2/3 innings over four games.

Add it up and, even with Wright’s gem in a 3-0 win in Game 2, Atlanta’s starters were 1-3 with a 7.90 ERA in the NLDS. Philadelphia took the lead in the first inning of Game 1, the third inning of Game 3 and the second inning of Game 4, and it never looked back on its way to the NL Championship Series.

One couldn’t help but wonder: Could it have been a different series with the Braves’ starters at 100 percent?

“I don’t think that’s fair to Philly. We don’t want to make excuses,” said Wright. “I think they played really well, and they beat us. You never know what those guys are going through, too. You can play that game, but you don’t want to take any credit away from them.”

Morton’s start on Saturday landed 354 days after he threw 16 pitches on a fractured right fibula in the third inning of Game 1 of last year’s World Series, when he retired all three Astros hitters he faced following a Yuli Gurriel grounder off his shin. On Saturday afternoon against the Phillies, it was a painful case of déjà vu.

Leading off the second inning, Philadelphia third baseman Alec Bohm hit a 71.8 mph line drive that struck Morton’s right arm just inches from the elbow. It altered the course of Morton’s latest effort in a postseason elimination game. Before that moment, his fastball was ranging between 95.5-96.6 mph. After that moment, 11 of his 19 pitches for the remainder of the inning were curveballs, and the fastballs ranged between 93.7-95.3 mph.

The Phillies took advantage. Morton stayed in the game to strike out Bryson Stott before Jean Segura hit a curveball for a single and Brandon Marsh, batting ninth, smashed another curveball for a three-run home run and a 3-0 lead.

Morton managed to finish the inning and took the mound to warm up for the third, but he never threw a pitch. After several warmup tosses, he was met on the mound by Braves manager Brian Snitker and an athletic trainer before making the slow walk to the dugout.

“Once I saw him coming out, I knew,” Morton said.

Said Snitker: “They did X-ray him. There wasn’t anything in the joint. I’m thinking, ‘If it doesn’t go well, then I think we’re in a deeper hole.’ You know what, I watched the warmup pitches and didn’t like it — I just told him my eye test wasn’t real good right there. He would have kept going. I just thought we were at a point where we don’t need to try it.”

Morton conceded after the game that his elbow had begun to tighten up between innings. But still, he came out of the game reluctantly. Collin McHugh took over, had as much time as he needed to warm up and promptly surrendered an inside-the-park home run to J.T. Realmuto, which extended Philadelphia’s lead to 4-1.

“There’s nobody who wanted to be out there more than Charlie did,” McHugh said. “The decision was kind of taken away from him.”

“That’s where you have to give Snit a lot of credit,” Wright said. “I think he was looking after Charlie and wanted to protect him, but at the same time, he didn’t want to really risk anything. It helps when you have a good bullpen to make that decision, but just as a competitor, man, it sucks that that’s how it had to end.”

Said first baseman Matt Olson: “I think [Morton] was trying not to act like it was hurting him, but I think everybody could kind of see that he wasn’t necessarily the same with it. It’s a really unfortunate thing that happened. Charlie cares a bunch, and we love playing behind him. We had to pivot and try to win another way.”

Morton retreated to the clubhouse before returning to the dugout for moral support as the Braves tried to hit their way back into the game. The Phillies didn’t let it happen.

“I thought the guys were good. I thought we were in a good spot. I thought the team had energy,” Morton said. “But at the same time, I was in a weird spot there mentally, because I’m coming out of the game. I felt like I didn’t do my job, and that’s a tough feeling, because that game meant a lot to me and this team means a lot to me.”

Fantasy Football Rankings for Week 6, 2022: Model says start Kenneth Walker, sit DeVonta Smith

With byes starting this week, there are fewer players to choose from for your Week 6 Fantasy football lineups. Thus, Fantasy owners’ lineup depth will be tested, but at the same time, Fantasy football start-sit decisions could be easier when you don’t have as many options to choose from. One of the potential Fantasy football sleepers could be Melvin Gordon of the Broncos. With Denver taking on a Chargers squad that’s allowed more Fantasy points to opposing RBs than any other, Gordon receives a boost in the Week 6 Fantasy football rankings. Before setting your Fantasy football lineups, be sure to check out the Week 6 Fantasy football rankings from the advanced computer model at SportsLine.

When it comes to ranking players, SportsLine’s model beat human experts in Fantasy football for the past several seasons especially when there were big differences in ranking. Over the course of a season, that could literally be the difference between winning your league or going home empty-handed.

Last week, the model was extremely high on Saints TE Taysom Hill, saying he’d finish as a top-10 player at his position. The result: Hill carried the ball nine times for 112 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks. He also completed a pass for 22 yards and an additional score. Anybody who had him in their lineup was well on their way to a huge week.

Now, the model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, has revealed its Fantasy football rankings for Week 6 of the 2022 NFL season. Head to SportsLine now to see them.

Top Week 6 Fantasy football picks

One player the model is high on this week: Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III. Seattle’s starting RB Rashaad Penny (leg) was injured last week and is now lost for the season, bumping Walker up the depth chart. He acquitted himself last week with 88 yards and a touchdown on just eight touches. After not playing in Week 1, the rookie has increased his rushing yardage in every game since.

Seattle’s offensive line is dominant in the run game, as evident by the team leading the NFL with 5.5 yards per carry. The team’s Week 6 opponent, Arizona, just allowed a season-high 139 rushing yards last week along with two scores. Through five weeks, the Cardinals have allowed the opposing team’s No. 1 running back to average 77.6 scrimmage yards and score four total touchdowns. Walker is in an ideal situation behind Seattle’s line and should reward those who slot him into their Week 6 Fantasy football lineups. See who else to target here.

And a massive shocker: Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who’s recorded at least 80 receiving yards in three of his last four games, stumbles big-time and doesn’t even crack the top 20 at his position. Smith recorded 10 catches for 87 yards in Philadelphia’s victory over the Cardinals on Sunday. However, Philadelphia’s offense struggled in the second half, scoring just six points in the 20-17 win.

Smith and the Eagles will now face a stingy Dallas Cowboys defense on Sunday night. The Cowboys are giving up just 14.4 points per game, the third-best mark in the NFL. In addition, Dallas hasn’t allowed more than one touchdown pass in a game this season, which doesn’t bode well for Smith’s Fantasy value this week. With such a tough matchup on Sunday, Smith is a player to consider putting on the bench in Week 6. See who else to fade here.

How to set Week 6 Fantasy football rankings

The model is also calling for a surprising quarterback you aren’t even thinking about to finish in the top 10 of its Week 6 Fantasy football rankings. This pick could be the difference between winning big and going home with nothing. You can only see who it is here.
