Matthew Stafford soars, while Kliff Kingsbury flops

The quarterback who still has something to prove showed that maybe he really is built to win big games.

The head coach who still does too, showed that maybe he’s not.

The Los Angeles Rams, and QB Matthew Stafford, defeated the Arizona Cardinals, coached by Kliff Kingsbury on Monday, 30-23. While this was still a December regular season game in December, it might signal plenty about the January playoff ones to come.

Stafford did everything to win it. Kingsbury did enough to not.

Start with Stafford, who is closing in on 50,000 career passing yards, 320 career touchdowns and $250,000,000 in career salary.

There has never been any doubt about his ability to throw a football, a primary reason he was the No. 1 quarterback recruit coming out of high school, the No. 1 overall draft pick coming out of college.

Winning critical games? That’s a different question. In a dozen seasons in Detroit, Stafford never won a playoff game (0-3 in the wild-card round) or a division crown. Even significant regular season victories are tough to find on his resume.

The Rams went all in on his last offseason though, making a deal that included QB Jared Goff and two first-round draft picks on the belief that Stafford was a winner dragged down by Lions dysfunction.

The Rams are now 9-4, but it wasn’t really until Monday, on the road, with an injury and COVID-depleted roster, that Stafford looked like someone capable of leading L.A. to the Super Bowl.

He threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns, including multiple completions featuring near impossible accuracy. He threw sidearm, downfield and seemingly through needles. He was brilliant.

“I thought Matthew Stafford was outstanding,” said Rams coach Sean McVay. “I thought he made great decisions, some unbelievable big shots he took advantage of, he was great on third down.”

This was exactly the Stafford the Rams were hoping to see. His connection with Cooper Kupp (13 catches for 123 yards) belies the fact that they are in their first season as teammates. His ability to make huge plays out of busted ones changed the game.

“I thought we were efficient in the passing game, taking what they gave us and then we took some shots and hit those shots,” said Stafford, who hit Odell Beckham Jr. for 40 yards, Kupp for 44 and Van Jefferson Jr. for 58.

Then there were the little things, the winning things. Maybe none was bigger than chasing down his own fumble after being strip sacked. Just about everyone else on the field thought it was just an incomplete pass. It wasn’t. The ball was live. Stafford recovered and two snaps later threw a touchdown that pushed the lead to 27-13.

“I was screaming as I was running [for it],” Stafford said. “I [thought] it was an incomplete pass but I didn’t want to leave it to chance.”

Those were the moments that Arizona lacked. It doesn’t all fall on the coach, but while Kingsbury has done excellent work to get the Cardinals to 10-3, no one has any idea if the third year coach is built for the playoffs, where every decision gets magnified.

Among the questionable ones was a fourth-and-1 from the Rams’ 37-yard line with 5:24 remaining in the game and Arizona trailing by 10. Kick the field goal – Matt Prater was bombing them in – and it’s a one score game with plenty of time left. The Cardinals were always going to need a field goal.

Instead they went for it, got stuffed and handed L.A. a huge advantage. Even though the Rams were forced to punt, they still had a two-score lead.

“I like the call, it just didn’t work out,” Kingsbury said. “You’ve got to give them credit. I’d go for it 100 times out of 100.”

When the Cardinals got the ball back with 2:44 remaining, they ran an 11-play drive until fourth down forced them to attempt a 49-yard field goal with 41 seconds remaining. Prater hit it, cutting the lead to 30-23, but there was almost no time left. They had numerous options to kick sooner and preserve the clock.

Instead, after the Cards recovered the onside kick, they were forced into a hurried, sloppy drive that featured two offensive penalties and some final-play confusion on whether Kyler Murray was supposed to spike it or attempt a Hail Mary. Instead, with an offensive line not blocking, Aaron Donald ended the game with a sack.

“It was miscommunication between me and the o-line,” Murray said. “They thought it was going to be ‘spike.’ But that’s heat of the moment stuff. I don’t even recall what was being said in the helmet.”

That’s the kind of stuff that needs to be sewn up. It was just part of the problem.

“A lot of penalties, the two turnovers, conversions on fourth down,” Murray said. “If we do a lot of things differently, it would have ended differently.”

Except they didn’t. So it didn’t. Arizona is still first in the NFC West, although it has given up on the No. 1 seed. Kingsbury could only shrug. Considering his team is just 3-3 at home and 7-0 on the road this season, however, he joked that maybe they’re better off as a lower seed.

Kingsbury has just one year on his contract remaining and his name got floated (probably not coincidentally) for an open job at the University of Oklahoma, even though the Sooners never considered him.

This has been a breakthrough season and Arizona would be wise to keep him around. But the spotlight of January is coming, and any backfiring decision can end a season and wreck a reputation.

It’s the big games, the playoff games, after all, where respect is truly handed out.

Just ask Matthew Stafford. He’s still looking for his.

Cardinals vs. Rams score: Matthew Stafford outduels Kyler Murray as Los Angeles gets revenge on rivals

Kyler Murray was a walking highlight reel as per usual on Monday night, but his Cardinals lost their stranglehold on the NFC’s No. 1 seed in a home rematch with the Rams. Matthew Stafford made his own case to remain in the 2021 MVP conversation thanks to a nearly flawless three-touchdown performance, and Aaron Donald feasted up front to the tune of three sacks, helping lift Sean McVay’s squad to a 30-23 victory that puts them right back in the mix for an NFC West title.

Here are some immediate takeaways from Monday night’s thriller:

Why the Rams won

Their high-flying offense did its thing basically from start to finish. After an opening-series punt, Stafford started dealing with some of the most confident, comfortable throwing he’s showcased all year. A shifty Sony Michel helped take pressure off his arm, but that did plenty of work on Arizona’s secondary, hitting Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson and Odell Beckham Jr. for big scores and timely precision passes. Kupp stayed open throughout the evening to bolster his case for Offensive Player of the Year. Defensively, Donald was a wrecking ball in the trenches even when he didn’t get to Murray, and the secondary kept enough plays in front of them sans Jalen Ramsey, who was missing due to COVID. This was a true team win.

Why the Cardinals lost

Defense was hard to come by for Arizona, which let the Rams turn in one of their most efficient outings of the year. But the bigger issue honestly might’ve been lack of execution from an offensive lineup and staff that’s proven to be one of the NFL’s most talented. Murray made plenty of splash plays, rocketing some pretty deep balls and exploding for chunk runs while threatening to send the game to overtime, but he was also erratic through the air, forcing throws on two bad picks and taking a pair of ill-advised sacks on the final two series. Kliff Kingsbury had an equally large hand in the late-game slip-ups, failing to keep Arizona up to speed in crunch time. Aside from Murray, their running game was also a virtual no-show.

Turning point

With 1:13 left in the game, the Cardinals trailed by 10 with the ball at the Rams’ 27-yard line. Then Murray took a sack on third-and-long, allowing the clock to run and forcing Arizona to make a split decision on whether to send the field goal unit out or keep aiming for six. Kingsbury and Co. used up a good 30 seconds before finally getting three from a 49-yard Matt Prater kick. That pulled them within seven, and a successful ensuing onside kick legitimized comeback hopes. But the lost time doomed their final drive and helped seal the victory for L.A.

Play of the game

Almost every other throw or scramble from Murray was fun to watch, but Stafford deserves props for the beautiful rainbow bomb he delivered into the waiting and moving arms of Jefferson on their long touchdown:

What’s next

The Rams (9-4), back in the conversation for a division title and even the NFC’s No. 1 seed, will return home to host their division rival Seahawks (5-8) on Sunday, a week after Seattle routed the Texans. The Cardinals (10-3), meanwhile, who are now fighting multiple teams for the top spot in the NFC, will visit the Lions (1-11-1), who fell to the Broncos in Week 14.

Rams vs. Titans score: Tennessee’s defense rattles Matthew Stafford, rolls to big ‘Sunday Night Football’ win

So much for the Rams proving in prime time that they belong atop the list of Super Bowl contenders. Los Angeles played host to “Sunday Night Football” in Week 9, but Sunday’s prime-time affair belonged almost exclusively to the visiting Titans. While Ryan Tannehill and an offense featuring Adrian Peterson among fill-ins for the injured Derrick Henry did not always explode, Tennessee’s defense definitely did, with Jeffery Simmons and Co. disrupting Matthew Stafford early and often to headline a 28-16 rout at SoFi Stadium.

Tennessee has now won five straight to improve to 7-2, perhaps solidifying itself as the new favorite in the AFC. The Rams, meanwhile, are now 7-2 and officially behind the red-hot Cardinals in the NFC West.

Here are some immediate takeaways from Sunday night’s big Titans win:

Why the Titans won

On a night that started feisty and physical on both sides, they were opportunistic amid the early punches: after a deep-ball pick prematurely ended their first drive, they held the Rams to a field goal and then, a few series later, forced Stafford into back-to-back interceptions deep in his own territory. Simmons wrecked things up front, rattling Stafford out of the gate, while Denico Autry and Harold Landry also stepped up to collapse the pocket. The front-seven heat took pressure off a secondary that had surprisingly little trouble containing Cooper Kupp and Co. for much of the night. And offensively, while Tannehill and their post-Henry running game lacked pizzazz, they successfully grinded it out when they needed to, outmuscling L.A. throughout the evening.

Why the Rams lost

Stafford has been an MVP candidate all year, headlining the Rams’ high-flying attack, but against the Titans, he looked an awful lot like the guy who spent so many years ducking and covering and forcing things in Detroit. His protection was poor, no doubt, with Austin Corbett and the Rams’ interior frequently folding at the will of Simmons and the rest of Mike Vrabel’s front. But the QB wasn’t great himself, either, missing open downfield shots and throwing a pair of really ill-advised passes that ended up giving Tennessee the turnover advantage. Kupp and Robert Woods showed up too late (as did Sean McVay’s fourth-down play-calling), and the run game didn’t really make a difference. Defensively, Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey did their usual thing, but penalties and perhaps a shade of indifference left them vulnerable in the final stages of the game, too.

Turning point

As soon as Stafford threw a pick-six, the Titans actually appeared poised to win this. The Rams led 3-0 when Stafford was first picked off, with David Long Jr. nabbing his throw and setting up a quick Geoff Swaim score. Trailing 7-3, though, on the first play of the ensuing drive, he inexplicably fired a short one toward Woods with multiple cover men in the area, and Kevin Byard had no problem returning the pick 24 yards for the score. The 14-3 hole proved too deep to overcome.

Play of the game

It has to be the play in which Stafford got whipped around and pulled a Carson Wentz, gifting a pick to the opponent near his own end zone — a play that defined a night full of Titans-led disruptions:

What’s next

The Titans (7-2) will return home in Week 10 after their big prime-time win, this time to face the Saints (5-3), who just lost a narrow one to the Falcons. The Rams (7-2), meanwhile, will hit the road for an important NFC West showdown with the 49ers (3-5), who just fell to the Cardinals, on “Monday Night Football.”

Matthew Stafford battles through finger injury, leads Rams to big NFC West win

The Los Angeles Rams held on to defeat the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night in one of the strangest games of the 2021 NFL season, 26-17.

Matthew Stafford, who suffered a finger injury, finished with 365 passing yards, a touchdown pass and an interception. Stafford told FOX’s Erin Andrews he popped his finger back into place and didn’t experience any further discomfort.

Darrell Henderson Jr. ran for 82 yards on 17 carries and had a touchdown too.

Robert Woods torched the Seahawks’ secondary. He had 12 catches for 150 yards. Cooper Kupp added seven catches for 92 yards. Stafford’s touchdown pass went to Tyler Higbee in the third quarter.

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald set the franchise record for career sacks. He finished with one in the game and it was enough to get him to the 88.5 mark. Donald had seven total tackles. Nick Scott and Troy Reeder each had interceptions.

Geno Smith was thrust into the game for an injured Russell Wilson, who injured his middle finger. He kept the Seahawks in the game with a touchdown pass to D.K. Metcalf to cap off a 10-play, 98-yard drive. He then led the Seahawks to a field goal to keep the game close but ended a potential game-tying drive before it even got started with an interception on the first play.

Smith’s touchdown pass to Metcalf was his first since 2017.

Wilson exited the game after dislocating his middle finger. He tried to play through it but appeared to be uncomfortable trying to throw the ball. He wouldn’t return.

Smith was 10-for-17 with a touchdown pass and an interception. Wilson was 11-for-16 with 152 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception. Metcalf caught both of the TD passes. He had five catches for 98 yards in the game.

NFL referees had to go deep into the rulebook during the third quarter as well. Michael Dickson would have a punt blocked which he recovered and kicked again. However, officials were forced to look at it as it appeared he had crossed the line of scrimmage to kick the ball again. Referees determined he didn’t cross the line.

Matthew Stafford leads Rams to resounding victory over Bears in Los Angeles debut

INGLEWOOD, California — After throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns in his Rams debut Sunday night in SoFi Stadium, Matthew Stafford walked into his postgame press conference wearing a gray sweater with a bright, yellow smiley face on the front. It could not have been more uncool, and yet it was incredibly cool because it reflected someone unconcerned with what anyone else might think.

Fact is, the only people Stafford was concerned about impressing Sunday were his wife, who told him to wear the top, and his new teammates and coaches, who know the Rams, 34-14 victors over the Bears, will go only as far as Stafford takes them this season. Such is to be expected after Los Angeles traded QB Jared Goff and three draft picks — including two firsts — to the Lions for the strong-armed 13-year veteran.

As first impressions go, Stafford left a lasting impression on not only the sellout crowd of 70,445 — which was the first to see a game in the $5 billion palace that is SoFi — but also on those in his locker room.

“I’m sure he’ll be self-critical and he’s going to have some things he wants to get better at … but his command, his swag — like, everything was great,” said cornerback Jalen Ramsey. “That’s like a debut that should go down in history, just the way he played. I’m not all into the stats all the time — his stats was probably crazy, too — but it was a debut that was nice.”

A perfect passer rating is 158.3. Stafford’s was 156.1, his career-high. He completed 20-of-26 attempts and wasted no time showing he is capable of providing the Rams with the explosive pass plays via air yards that they desire, finding Van Jefferson for a 67-yard score on Los Angeles’ third play from scrimmage.

Stafford play-actioned right, rolled left and spotted Jefferson sprinting behind the safety toward the opposite corner. In a snap, he flipped his hips, squared up and launched a pass that was like a teardrop from heaven for Jefferson, who fell after the reception but got up and burst toward the goal line.

“That’s exactly what we had wanted, and it was from a bunch of different guys,” head coach Sean McVay said of several big gains through the air. “You look at Van, you look at (Cooper Kupp, who had a 56-yard TD catch); Tyler Higbee had a 37-yard catch.”

According to Next Gen Stats, Stafford was the first player with at least two touchdown passes of 40 or more air yards in one game since Kirk Cousins in Week 6 of the 2019 season. He has eight touchdown passes, zero interceptions and a 126.0 passer rating on deep passes since 2020; Goff has three scores with one interception and a 77.4 passer rating.

And yet the play that brought the biggest smile to McVay’s face was a 2-yard touchdown pass to Robert Woods late in the fourth quarter. Stafford initially looked to the right flat for Kupp, who had crossed his face in motion, saw he was covered and took a step or two forward as if he were going to run to avoid the pass rush. Instead, he found Woods moving right to left at the back of the end zone for the score.

The play showed Stafford’s ability to not only turn a potential negative into a positive, but also an increasing comfort with the offense. He spent his first nine seasons in Detroit, playing in various systems but arguably none as varied as McVay’s. To be able to process so much information this early in his tenure with the Rams potentially bodes well for what might come.

He admitted he has been on a crash course, trying to become comfortable with the uncomfortable. And despite opening the night with more than 45,000 yards and 282 touchdowns passing, he still felt a need to make himself accountable to his new teammates and coaches.

“A lot of anticipation for this game,” he said. “For me, it’s a new experience, a new place, a new stadium, new fans, the whole deal. But this team has embraced me and I really appreciate that. I’ve done everything I can to work as hard as I can and give myself to this team, and they’ve wrapped their arms around me. It felt good to go out there and play with them tonight, with such incredible players. I’m lucky to be a part of it and I want to try and do everything I can to try and lead this team to where we want to go.”

The Rams are definite NFC threats considering they return the key components of a defense that ranked No. 1 overall in scoring last season. The unit flexed its muscle on its opening series, stalling a Chicago drive with an interception of a tipped Andy Dalton pass. You could almost hear the groans from Chicago following the turnover, as many in the fan base want rookie first-round pick Justin Fields in the lineup. And while Fields did get a handful of snaps, even scoring on a 3-yard run in the third quarter, it’s a tough situation to throw him into.

Consider, the Bears were down one tackle going into the game, lost recently acquired Jason Peters to injury during the game, and had Peters’ backup, Larry Borom, leave with an ankle injury. For all the talent Fields has, and it appears significant, the careers of many young quarterbacks have ended before they began by teams putting them in situations where they can’t be protected.

Dalton finished 27-of-38 passing for 206 yards with no touchdowns. He was intercepted once, which was followed by the Jefferson score that gave Los Angeles a lead it never relinquished, and sacked three times. The only positive was their run game, which produced 134 yards, including 108 by David Montgomery. Short of that, there was little for the Bears to find solace in. They had seven possessions in which the final line of scrimmage was in Rams territory, yet managed just two scores.

Coach Matt Nagy acknowledged afterward that the plan was get Fields some snaps, but only in the right situations. He hinted that he would continue to do so going forward.

“We had a plan and we stuck to our plan,” he said. “We knew where and when we were going to use (each quarterback) and we stuck to that. We’ll see where that goes and how we do it. But, I think, we all understand that, for us, strategically we’ll see where we go with that without giving anything away.”

The Rams have no such concerns. For them, it’s all smiley faces.

Matthew Stafford starts Rams career with long touchdown pass to Van Jefferson

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Welcome to L.A., Matthew Stafford!

A play-action rollout resulted in Stafford airing it out to Van Jefferson, as the second-year receiver sprinted behind the defense, dove to get the ball and got up when he wasn’t touched. The 67-yard touchdown bomb gave the Los Angeles Rams a 7-0 lead over the Chicago Bears in the first quarter.

Stafford’s 67-yard touchdown pass is tied for the longest completion on an opening drive in his career. He also had a 67-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Johnson on the opening drive of a Sept. 8, 2014 game between the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants.

Stafford strutted his way down the field in celebration, while defensive lineman Aaron Donald and cornerback Jalen Ramsey erupted on the sideline.

Stafford continued to let in fly in the third quarter. After hitting Jefferson with the touchdown pass to open the game, Stafford opened the second half with a 56-yard bomb to receiver Cooper Kupp, who caught the pass in stride without a defender within 10 yards to give the Rams a 20-7 lead.

For the first time in his career, Stafford has multiple passing touchdowns of more than 40 air yards in a single game

Matthew Stafford takes a not-so-subtle shot at Detroit Lions organization

One of the biggest moves in the NFL during the offseason happened quickly when the Los Angeles Rams acquired Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions in exchange for two future first-round picks, a third-round pick and QB Jared Goff.

Stafford told ESPN’s Seth Wickersham what the ultimate goal is now that he’s with the Rams:

“I just want to play in big games, you know? … I want to have opportunities to make big-time plays in the fourth quarter against really good teams, in big moments, rather than a one o’clock game on a Sunday somewhere,” he said.

Stafford never won a playoff game in his 12 seasons in Detroit, but he joins the Rams that’s loaded with talent and just lacking a qualified quarterback.

Despite not having postseason success with the Lions, the Rams see the potential in Stafford and Clutch Points reports the problems with Detroit weren’t with necessarily with the quarterback himself.

“Constant coach shuffling, a front office that never had solutions and a lack of legitimate talent outside of hall-of-fame inductee Calvin Johnson were the core issues that have lived with the Lions far before Stafford ever arrived,” the outlet writes.

The Rams made the postseason a year ago but came up short in Green Bay against the Packers in the divisional round. Cluch Points reports that Goff dealt with injuries but even when healthy, the quarterback didn’t play the way he had shown a couple of years ago.

Matthew Stafford texted Jared Goff to wish him well in Detroit

After the Lions agreed to trade Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff and three draft picks, Stafford reached out to Goff to wish him well in Detroit.

Stafford told Mitch Albom that he thinks highly of Goff and hopes he’ll have success in Detroit.

“I shot him a text. We texted a little bit. Just told him that I know going out there I’ve got big shoes to fill,” Stafford said. “It’s not lost on me that he was in the Super Bowl just a few years ago. He’s a really good player in his own right. I just wanted to let him know that I appreciate him as a player and obviously, to reach out to me if there was anything he needed when it comes to Detroit, just as far as advice or places to stay, anything. I know that he feels that he can reach out to me, and I know I can reach out to him with anything in L.A. too. So it’s been good.”

Stafford will officially become a Ram, and Goff will officially become a Lion, when the new league year starts on March 17.

Bears, Broncos and Panthers offered Lions first-rounder and more for Matthew Stafford, per report

Raj Mehta / USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Rams reportedly agreed on Saturday to pay a premium to acquire Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions, but at least three other teams were prepared to do the same. Hours after reports indicated that several others sought to trade for the 12-year veteran, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that at least three clubs actually made offers for Stafford — and every one of them included a first-round draft pick, plus more. Those teams, per Rapoport: The Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers.

The reported trade offers go even further, as Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote the Panthers actually offered the No. 8 overall pick in order to acquire Stafford. Their proposal also came with a later pick. Washington offered the No. 19 overall pick with a third-round pick. The Colts offered a package of picks, but never offered their first-round pick. The Bears and Jets kept tabs on Stafford, but the Jets never made an offer. The New England Patriots were willing to offer a second-round pick and a player, but Stafford didn’t want to play in New England.

In total, according to Rapoport, the Lions had more than six formal trade offers for Stafford, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. But Chicago, Carolina and Denver were “among a handful of teams” outside of the Rams who made the most aggressive plays for the veteran QB. The Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Football Team were also in the mix, as NBC Sports’ Peter King reported previously, but may or may not have offered first-round picks for Stafford.

While Stafford’s now locked into Los Angeles, where he represents a clear upgrade over fellow former No. 1 pick — and new Lions QB — Jared Goff, the fact that the Bears, Broncos and Panthers reportedly all made legitimate attempts to acquire him speak to their respective desires for new signal-callers.

Chicago’s former first-rounder, Mitchell Trubisky, is set to hit free agency in March, and 2020 acquisition Nick Foles appears destined for an expensive backup role. The Broncos have publicly supported former second-rounder Drew Lock, though his 2020 decline has seemingly reignited the team’s hunt for a long-term answer. And the Panthers, despite signing Teddy Bridgewater to a lucrative three-year deal prior to 2020, have openly hinted at seeking a more reliable or higher-upside replacement this offseason.

Reports: Panthers offered No. 8 pick and more for Matthew Stafford

Getty Images

The Panthers were among several teams vying for Matthew Stafford before the Lions agreed to trade him to the Rams, but the reports of what the Panthers were offering is eye-opening.

Carolina offered up its first-round pick this year, No. 8 overall, and more, according to Albert Breer of SI.com and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

With an offer like that, it’s surprising that the Lions would take the Rams’ offer of a 2021 third-round pick, 2022 first-round pick, 2023 first-round pick and Jared Goff instead. The Rams’ picks in 2022 and 2023 will likely be later in the first round than No. 8 overall, and teams almost always prioritize having picks this year over having them in the future. In fact, if the Lions really wanted first-round picks in future years, they could have gotten them by trading out of the Panthers’ No. 8 overall pick, as well as the Lions’ own No. 7 overall pick.

The Rams were eager to get rid of Goff’s contract, and Lions General Manager Brad Holmes, who was with the Rams throughout Goff’s tenure, may like him well enough that he views Goff, even with his expensive salary cap hits the next two seasons, as a positive asset. But with a Top 10 pick in 2021 being offered, it’s surprising that the Lions preferred Goff and the Rams’ package of picks instead.
