Julian Sands missing – latest news: Sheriff’s office gives update on search for missing actor

Julian Sands: Who is the Hollywood British actor missing in California?

Authorities in California say the search for Julian Sands will continue by air only.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department released an update on Wednesday evening US time to say helicopters continued to search the San Gabriel Mountains for any sign of the missing British actor.

The California Highway Patrol’s Valley Division Air Ops has been brought in to assist the search using a device that can detect reflective material and in some cases credit cards, the sheriff’s office said.

Meanwhile, Julian Sands’ brother Nick has said that he knows “in my heart” that his sibling is no longer alive, as the search for the missing British actor approached its second week.

“However sibling rivalry being what it is, it would be just like him to walk out of there and prove me wrong,” Nick said in comments to his his local Yorkshire paper, the Craven Herald.

Sands was reported missing on 13 January, sparking a major search and rescue effort led by the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, an official statement from the sheriff’s office said that fresh searches on higher ground for Sands are still not possible due to poor conditions.

Last week, Sands’ family released the last known images of him mountaineering, telling The Independent: “This is how he would love to be seen, doing what he loved best – a heroic mountaineer.”

RECAP: Ground search for Julian Sands suspended

The search for missing actor Julian Sands in California’s San Gabriel Mountains is currently only being conducted by the air, police say.

As the effort to find Sands neared its second week, The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said on Wednesday evening that ground searches in higher areas were no longer possible due to poor local weather conditions.

Police shared pictures of the helicopters still being used in the aerial search and said the California Highway Patrol’s Valley Division Air Ops has been brought in to assist.

Searchers are using a RECCO device – a radar system that can detect corresponding RECCO reflectors worn by mountaineers on their clothing and bags, as well as other reflective surfaces such as electronics and even sometimes credit cards.

“We are hopeful our [California Highway Patrol] partners, Officers Hertzell & Calcutt, can pinpoint an area where we can focus our search efforts, and we thank them for their assistance,” the latest police update read, adding that “additional information will be released when it becomes available”.

Sands, 65, was hiking in the Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles, when he went missing on 13 January. He has not been heard from since.

Jeremy Renner Was Saving His Nephew When Injured in Snowplow Accident, Says Sheriff’s Report

A Nevada sheriff’s report obtained by CNN found that Jeremy Renner was actually trying to save his nephew when he got in a snowplow accident on New Year’s Day that nearly cost him his life. The Hawkeye actor was attempting to stop his snow-removal tractor from sliding and hitting his nephew when he was pulled under the vehicle and crushed.

Renner told investigators that he was using his snowcat vehicle to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow when the snowplow suddenly started to slide sideways. The actor then exited the vehicle to try and stop the machine.

“Once he was off the Pistenbully, he realized it was heading directly toward (his nephew),” the report reads. “He feared the Pistenbully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the Pistenbully.”

Hawkeye Premiere — All the Easter Eggs From the First Two Episodes

In order to get back into the snowplow’s cab, Renner had to climb onto its moving track. The report notes that the moment he attempted to climb up, he was “immediately pulled under the left side track.” It’s also important to note that the parking brake on the snowcat was not engaged.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward,” the report read. “When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

The report also stated that “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident” due to a malfunctioning brake indicator light.

It was ultimately good news that Renner’s nephew was there, though, as he was able to help the actor until help arrived. Renner was then airlifted to the hospital; he underwent at least two surgeries and was treated in the intensive care unit.

Renner has now returned to his home but is still recovering from the accident. He took to Twitter to thank all of his supporters for their love and support, revealing that he broke “30 plus” bones during the incident.

Jeremy Renner was crushed by snowplow as he tried to save nephew from injury, sheriff’s report says

CNN
 —

Actor Jeremy Renner was trying to stop his snow-removal tractor from sliding and hitting his grown nephew when he was pulled under the vehicle and crushed on New Year’s Day, according to a Nevada sheriff’s office incident report.

The parking break was not engaged and would have stopped the snowcat vehicle, which runs on a track, as it started sliding sideways after the 52-year-old “Avengers” star used it to pull his nephew’s truck out of snow, according to the redacted Washoe County Sheriff’s Office report, filed Friday.

“The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” reads the conclusion of the report, which CNN obtained Tuesday through a public records request.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”

The brake indicator light inside the snowcat’s cab was not functioning, and “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident,” the report also notes.

The nephew was able to help Renner until help arrived, the report states. Renner was airlifted to the hospital, where he stayed for more than two weeks, undergoing at least two surgeries and being treated in the intensive care unit.

Impairment was not believed to be a factor in the incident, the report also concludes. CNN has reached out to Renner’s representatives for comment.

The incident began on New Year’s Day, when Renner towed his nephew’s truck off the actor’s driveway after it had been stuck in snow, he told investigators on January 5 while hospitalized, according to the incident report.

After towing the truck into the street, the snowplow began “sliding sideways,” then “it began to roll down the hill,” Renner said. At that point, Renner jumped out of the snowcat, he told investigators.

“Once he was off the Pistenbully, he realized it was heading directly toward (his nephew),” the report reads. “He feared the Pistenbully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the Pistenbully.”

To enter the snowplow’s cab, Renner had to climb onto its moving track and was “immediately pulled under the left side track,” the report notes.

Renner was “completely crushed under a large snowcat (vehicle)” and had “extreme (difficulty) breathing,” with “the right side of his chest … collapsed – upper torso is crushed,” a 911 call log obtained by CNN said.

“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road,” the report says. “He laid on the ground and focused on his breathing while (his nephew and others) rendered aid to him until medical personnel arrived on scene.”

Renner, who plays superhero archer Hawkeye in the Marvel movie and TV “Universe,” broke more than 30 bones in the incident, he’s said.

He posted a photo on Instagram last week with a caption that read: “Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love ❤️ I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend , grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens . Love and blessings to you all.”

8 people shot at Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Florida, sheriff’s office says

At least eight people were shot at a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration in Fort Pierce, Florida, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s office said.

One person is in critical condition and four others were injured in the chaos following the gunfire, according to the sheriff’s office.

Shots were fired over a “disagreement of some sort” following “MLK Car Show and Family Fun Day” at Ilous Ellis Park, said St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Hester. Eight people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, Hester said. Updates on the conditions of the seven who were not in critical condition were not immediately provided.

It was not clear if anybody was in custody or if a suspect or suspects had been identified, but Hester said police are following multiple leads and tips from the community. Hester said that evidence indicated there was likely more than one shooter.

All eight people who suffered gunshot wounds were adults and one of the people injured in the aftermath of the shooting was a juvenile, Hester said.

Two deputies had been providing security for the event, Hester said, but neither was able to see the shooter or shooters. Both deputies rendered aid to victims, Hester said.

Hester added that it was “unfortunate and sad that during a celebration for someone who represented peace and equality that a disagreement results in a use of guns and violence to solve that disagreement.”

Lake Elsinore deputy shot: Jesse Navarro ID’d as suspect in killing of Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Darnell Calhoun

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KABC) — The suspect in the fatal shooting of a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy near Lake Elsinore was identified Saturday as mournful tributes continued to pour in for the slain law enforcement officer.

Deputy Darnell Calhoun, 30, who had joined the department less than a year ago, was shot Friday while responding to a domestic violence and child custody call in Lakeland Village and later died at a hospital.

The suspect, 42-year-old Lake Elsinore resident Jesse Navarro, was shot by another responding deputy and hospitalized in critical condition, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Chad Bianco announced Calhoun’s death Friday evening during a news conference outside Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar.

“I shouldn’t be here tonight having to do this again,” Bianco said. “I’m devastated to tell of the loss of another of our deputy sheriffs who was killed in the line of duty today.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom issued the following statement Saturday morning:

“Jennifer and I are heartbroken by the loss of Deputy Calhoun, a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all those he served with at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, who are mourning the painful loss of another deputy weeks ago. Deputy Calhoun died a hero and his bravery and selfless service will always be remembered.”

The incident began shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday, when a dispatcher took a call and “in the background she heard voices and it sounded like a confrontation was occurring,” Bianco said.

Deputies were dispatched to the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane, in the unincorporated community of Lakeland Village, which borders the city of Lake Elsinore. Calhoun was the first deputy at the scene, but “we’re not sure about the initial contact,” the sheriff said.

The second deputy to arrive at the scene found Calhoun wounded in the street, according to Bianco. “A gunfight ensued with the suspect, who was shot. The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital.”

“He’s a husband, a son. He would have been a dad,” Bianco said of Calhoun, adding that the slain deputy’s wife is pregnant.

He said no one ever had a negative thing to say about Calhoun, who joined the Sheriff’s Department in February 2022 after spending two years with the San Diego Police Department.

“He was always so positive,” Bianco said, adding that Calhoun has a “fantastic family”.

“I remember when he was sworn in,” Bianco said, briefly overcome with emotion. “I hugged his mother and told her I would take care of him.”

Late Friday, a procession of law enforcement officers escorted Calhoun’s body from Inland Valley Medical Center to the coroner’s office in Perris.

On Saturday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta also offered his condolences.

“Deputy Darnell Calhoun represented the best of the California spirit — protecting and serving the public with valor,” Bonta said Saturday. “On behalf of the nearly 6,000 men and women of the California Department of Justice, I extend our deepest condolences to Deputy Calhoun*s family, colleagues, and the entire Riverside community. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Funeral services are pending.

In late December, another Riverside County deputy, Isaiah Cordero, was shot and killed in an encounter with a felon who had an extensive criminal record. The gunman in that incident was shot and killed by deputies after a chase.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputy shot, killed in Jurupa Valley; suspect also dead after chase

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) — A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed by a career criminal while trying to make a traffic stop in Jurupa Valley on Thursday, officials said.

The suspect in the shooting was also dead, after a pursuit through Riverside County ended with gunshots on the 15 Freeway.

The deputy has been identified as Isaiah Cordero, 32, who had been with the department since 2014 but only completed his motorcycle enforcement training a few months ago.

“He was a jokester around the station,” Sheriff Chad Bianco said. “And all of our deputies considered him their little brother.”

Deputy Isaiah Cordero of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department was shot and killed in the line of duty Dec. 29, 2022.

The Riverside Sheriff’s Association released a statement that read in part:

“We are devastated by the grief of losing Deputy Isaiah Cordero, a deputy who was a ray of sunshine in the Riverside Sheriff’s Department, a person who was dedicated to protecting others. Once again, we face a tragic reminder of the selflessness and unwavering courage required of peace officers and their families.”

“Deputy Cordero put on his uniform daily to make a difference in his community and keep families safe. Deputy Cordero’s death leaves a tremendous hole in the hearts of so many people who had the chance to know him personally. Today, Deputy Cordero made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty – a debt that can never be repaid. We must honor his memory and life of public service through our words and actions. Our heart goes out to his family, friends, and fellow deputies through this difficult time.”

After the shooting in the Rubidoux section of Jurupa Valley, the deputy was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, a spokesperson for the Riverside Fire Department said.

Dozens of law enforcement vehicles, many of them motorcycles, gathered outside the hospital to escort the slain deputy’s body in a procession to the coroner’s office in Perris.

Authorities were able to identify a suspect and pursued the individual in a pickup truck over several freeways in Riverside County. Video showed dozens of law enforcement vehicles following the pickup close behind as the truck fled at speeds around 45-50 mph.

The suspect fled over the 60 and 15 freeways and the chase came to an end near Norco under the 5th Street overpass on the southbound 15 Freeway.

Witnesses say at one point they saw the suspect apparently waving a gun at other vehicles during the chase.

At the end, the truck was on the shoulder of the freeway, pinned on the embankment by a law enforcement bearcat. The suspect was apparently killed after at least two shots were fired through the front windshield of the pickup truck.

How the shooting unfolded

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said the incident unfolded around 2 p.m. when Deputy Cordero – who had only completed motorcycle training in September – attempted to pull over a suspect on a traffic violation in Rubidoux on the 3900 block of Goldenwest Avenue.

As Cordero approached the vehicle, the suspect immediately opened fire, hitting the deputy, and fled.

A witness in the area called 911 and tried to assist the wounded deputy until help arrived. Although he was rushed to a nearby trauma center, it was clear the wounds were fatal and he was soon pronounced dead, Bianco said.

Cordero had joined the department in 2014, initially working as a correctional deputy. He began his basic academy training in early 2018 and was promoted to sworn deputy. He completed motor school in September of this year and was assigned to motor enforcement duty, which was his goal from the day he was hired, Bianco said.

What we know about the suspect

The suspect was identified as William Shae McKay, 44, whose last known address was in San Bernardino County.

Bianco described McKay as having an extensive criminal history dating back more than 20 years, including kidnapping, robbery, multiple assaults with a deadly weapon and involvement in one incident that resulted in the stabbing of a CHP K-9.

“This terrible tragedy should’ve been prevented by the legal system,” Bianco said.

For his latest offense, in 2021, Bianco said McKay should’ve been locked up for more than 25 years. Instead, he said, the judge lowered his bail, allowing him to be out on the street. He was arrested again for failing to appear at his sentencing.

He declined to identify the judge, but said: “We would not be here today if the judge had done her job.”

Florida Sheriff’s Deputy Ray Hamilton killed responding to domestic violence call

A Florida community is mourning the loss of a sheriff’s deputy after he was shot and killed by a domestic violence suspect on Christmas Eve.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office announced Cpl. Ray Hamilton, a five-year veteran of the department, was fatally injured when 43-year-old Timothy Price-Williams allegedly opened fire on him from inside his residence. Williams was shot in the arm during the gunfire exchange, but is expected to be OK.

Hamilton, who served on the Special Response Team, died shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Walton Beach – Destin Hospital.

The department said deputies responded to the townhome at 710 North Park Blvd. to present a warrant against Price-Williams for a domestic violence battery charge.

The victim reported that Price-Williams slapped her in the face and shoved her during an argument on Friday. She also said he took her phone away, so she couldn’t call 911 for help.

When deputies arrived at the home around 9 a.m. Saturday they made contact with Price-Williams. He reportedly refused to leave the residence, prompting the Special Response Team to come to the scene.

Around 12:40 p.m., he fired shots out of a window, striking Hamilton, wounds that ultimately led to his death.

Cpl. Ray Hamilton was fatally injured when 43-year-old Timothy Price-Williams allegedly opened fire on him from inside his residence.

Timothy Price-Williams was charged with premeditated murder in the fatal shooting of OCSO Cpl. Ray Hamilton.

In a statement posted to its Facebook page, Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said the grief from losing Hamilton is devastating, calling him a “ray of sunshine” who was “dedicated to protecting others.”

“We appreciate the endless stream of words of support that have come in for his family and his co-workers as we face this heartbreaking loss of a profoundly loved and respected friend, public servant, and hero,” Aden said.

Hamilton’s death makes him the 61st officer killed by gunfire in 2022.

Herschel Walker defends use of ‘honorary’ sheriff’s badge in Georgia Senate debate

CNN
 —

Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker defended pulling out a sheriff’s badge during Friday’s closely watched debate in Georgia, telling NBC in an interview that aired on Sunday it was “a legit,” but honorary badge from his hometown sheriff’s department.

Walker had pulled out the badge during a discussion over support for police – in a move that was admonished by the debate moderators and led to widespread mockery from Democrats.

“This is from my hometown. This is from Johnson County from the sheriff from Johnson County, which is a legit badge,” Walker told NBC’s Kristen Welker in a clip from the interview.

A CNN fact check found Walker has never had a job in law enforcement. He has publicized a card showing that he was at some point after 2004 named an “honorary agent” and “special deputy sheriff” in Cobb County, Georgia – titles that do not confer arrest authority.

The contest between Walker and Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock is one of the most important Senate races in the country, representing a key state Democrats must hold to have any chance to keep control of the Senate next year. The race has recently been rocked by allegations that Walker paid for a woman’s abortion and encouraged her to have another one – allegations the Republican has repeatedly denied and that CNN has not independently confirmed.

A survey released earlier this month, which was conducted after the allegations emerged, found Warnock with 52% support among likely voters to 45% for Walker, about the same as in a mid-September poll.

During Friday’s debate, Walker had accused Warnock of calling officers “names” and caused “morale” to plummet, but the Democrat cited a false claim from Walker that he had previously served in law enforcement.

“One thing that I haven’t done is I haven’t pretended to be a police officer and I’ve never, ever threatened a shootout with police,” Warnock said, alluding to a more than two-decade-old police report in which the Republican discussed exchanging gunfire with police.

“Everyone can make fun,” Walker said in the NBC interview, arguing that the badge means he has “the right to work with the police getting things done.”

Walker, however, later admitted it was an “honorary badge” and pushed back against the idea, which NBC’s Welker read from a National Sheriffs’ Association statement, that such badges should be left in a “trophy case.”
