Crossplay for King of Fighters 15, rollback for Samurai Shodown, and more announced by SNK at Evo

During their Evo panel today, SNK shared a handful of exciting announcements for both King of Fighters 15 as well as Samurai Shodown.

For King of Fighters this includes both short and long term DLC information, such as the release date for the recently revealed Team Awakened Orochi characters, and for SamSho it’s all about netcode.

Developers took to the stage to offer a few details and footage on how the three upcoming Team Awakened Orochi fighters, alternate versions of Shermie, Yashiro, and Chris, will play. They also offered a release date for the upcoming team: August 8.

The panel also noted that they’re working on cross-platform play for KOF15, but that it will not be ready to roll out until some time in 2023. Currently Sony console users can play with one another, but not with Microsoft users. This should be changing in the coming months, however.

Evo’s biggest reveals tend to happen on finals day, and SNK shared that they haven’t shown everything for this weekend just yet. Though we’re definitely excited to get our hands on Team Awakened Orochi in just three days, we’ll soon have yet another new team to look forward to as there’s another reveal slated for this Sunday.

Finally, another season of DLC is confirmed for King of Fighters 15 with additional information also slated to roll out on Sunday.

Samurai Shodown, which released back in 2019, will be getting rollback netcode for online play on almost all platforms. Developers are aiming for the spring of 2023 for this update, and will be available on all platforms save for the Nintendo Switch (due to technical limitations, according to the devs).

You can view the panel via the Twitch archive video here. It begins at the 4:40:10 mark and lasts for just over 30 minutes.

D3 Publisher [462 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/d3-publisher”>D3 Publisher and developer Shade” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/shade”>Shade have announced sword-fighting Action [545 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/genres/action”>action game SAMURAI MAIDEN [2 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/games/samurai-maiden”>SAMURAI MAIDEN for PS5 [3,146 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/platforms/playstation/ps5″>PlayStation 5, PS4 [23,630 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/platforms/playstation/ps4″>PlayStation 4, Switch [11,942 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/platforms/nintendo/switch”>Switch, and PC [15,580 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/platforms/pc”>PC (Steam). It will launch this winter worldwide.

SAMURAI MAIDEN follows student Tsumugi Tamaori, who is summoned in her sleep to the Sengoku period, where she must team up with new friends and use her sword skills to defeat the undead evil unearthed at Honnoji Temple.

Here is an overview of the game, via D3 Publisher:

SAMURAI MAIDEN follows the story of a high school student who falls asleep after a boring day of history lessons, waking alongside historical figure, Nobunaga Oda, known as the first great unifier in Japan. The two find themselves at the burning Honnoji Temple where the underworld has opened. Having trained in the art of sword fighting as a hobby, Tsumugi is suddenly put to the test in actual battle as she is gifted the evil warding blade by the desperate Nobunaga Oda, who steps into the underworld to put an end to the calamity. Even Tsumugi, an admittedly poor history student, recognizes Oda as the hero of the Sengoku period and understands she must rise to this bizarre occasion.

In SAMURAI MAIDEN, players can look forward to slaughtering mobs of undead enemies with Tsumugi’s powerful swordsmanship. With stylish combination attacks and strong counters, Tsumugi is well equipped to slay groups of zombies as well as tough bosses—but as a student from modern times, she is not capable of fighting her way out of the underworld!

However, Tsumugi is not SAMURAI MAIDEN‘s only fighter: she encounters three friendly ninjas at the Honnoji Temple, known as The Gokage, who decide to brave the underworld with her. The Gokage is comprised of Iyo, a hardworking ninja with a variety of tools, Hagane, an older ninja with a mechanical body, and Komimi, a genius with a unique jutsu. Through their travel, the team will quarrel, laugh, and fight alongside each other, forging new bonds in the process.

In their journey, players will be able to use the “Gokage System,” which allows a rapid combination of Tsumugi’s sword style and The Gokage’s powerful ninjutsu. From the samurai’s slashing and piercing attacks—to the ninjas’ wire arm, freezing yin yang jutsu, and various kunai attacks, players will be able to utilize these two types of offense to fight through the hoard of undead enemies.

Additionally, the group has unlockable special abilities: when Tsumugi and The Gokage’s spirits are heightened they can unlock these abilities by locking lips. However, they will need to build trust in each other before these special unified abilities can be unleashed in battle.

Cut through the evils in the Sengoku period while establishing relationships with the Sengoku maidens as the temple burns. The samurai slices while the ninjas dice to destroy the underworld of Honnoji Temple—will they be able to rewrite history?

Prologue

Nobunaga Oda, the Honnoji Incident in 1582… 1582…?

Alone in her classroom after school, Tsumugi Tamaori is studying during detention. History is not her forte. She particularly dislikes having to remember dates.

“I’m glad I wasn’t born in the Warring States period,” she mutters to herself. Every single page in her
textbook related to that time in history is littered with stories of battles.

This is Tsumugi’s last clear memory, before she passes out…

When she awakes, she is no longer in a classroom, but in a temple engulfed in flames: Honnoji.

“If you don’t want to die, you must fight,” said a bearded man who called himself Nobunaga Oda. Tsumugi can’t tell if it’s the real Nobunaga Oda, though, since the only pictures in the history books
are woodblock prints.

A crowd of skeletons swarms into the temple. Tsumugi is handed a long Japanese sword. It wasn’t a fake one like the ones from fencing practice. This was a real sword.

“Looks like I’ve got no choice! If I have to fight, I’m gonna fight with all my might!”

June 2, 1582, the Honnoji Incident. In the final days of Oda Nobunaga, the hero of the Warring States period, a girl named JK finds herself tossed into the fray. This might spice up the history books a little…

Elden Ring Players Love (And Hate) That Moonveil Katana Weapon

Whether you like it or not, samurai are dominating Elden Ring. It’s a good class, with some solid base stats and starting gear that can see you through the end of the game if you treat them right and level them up. The uchigatana is an especially excellent beginner weapon, but there’s another sword that has a growing fanbase singing its praises: the Moonveil katana.

The Moonveil looks much like the Rivers of Blood and uchigatana. That is to say it’s styled like a katana, traditional Japanese-style curved blade and all. Getting it is tricky, though. You gotta defeat a giant fire-breathing, sword-wielding salamander called Magma Wyrm in the depths of Gael Tunnel, which is on the border of Limgrave. That’s a tough fight. Magma Wyrm is big and the circular arena is small, so navigating it sucks. The camera can also get stuck against the wall if you’re not careful, and Magma Wyrm has some attacks that kill you in one hit. It’s an exercise in frustration.

If you manage to put an end to the ferocious Magma Wyrm, though, you’ll score a dragon heart as well as the coveted Moonveil. And let me tell you, this sword looks cool in action! It’s a magic-based katana with high blood loss buildup and solid damage output that scales with Dexterity, Intelligence, and Strength. But what makes it so sought-after is its weapon skill: Transient Moonlight. Much like with the uchigatana’s weapon skill, holding the left shoulder button sheathes the blade in preparation for unleashing a quick strike, but on top of that devastating physical attack, drawing drawing the Moonveil katana also launches a blue projectile wave. This gives your Tarnished a melee weapon that can play at range.

Transient Moonlight is what makes the Moonveil deadly. Even after FromSoftware stealthily nerfed it in a recent patch, the katana still quickly builds up the blood loss status effect, hits hard when upgraded, and shoots out a Vergil-from-DevilMayCry-style blade wave. In PvE, the weapon skill is a nice way to get a few hits in while maintaining distance. In PvP, it’s a godsend. The skill allows you to keep the pressure on at close range and lets you interrupt most casting animations at long range.

Being on the receiving end is such a nuisance that there’s folks on both sides of the blade. Some adore the Moonveil, saying it helped them kill multiple bosses and invaders back to back. Others call it broken because players spam Transient Moonlight too often. There are even folks that apparently hate the Moonveil so much, they named their Tarnished to convey this hatred to other players. Now that’s extreme.

I get it. Contending with a weapon that, in an instant, shoots out a high-damaging projectile must be frustrating in PvP. But at the same time, as a devout katana user, I’m totally getting the Moonveil. It’s the kind of weapon that inspires the otaku in me, letting me role-play my dreams as a ronin like Rurouni Kenshin or even Elden Ring’s very own samurai, the Bloody Finger Hunter Yura, instead of some raggedy Tarnished. Now, if only my ghost pups and I could kill that damn Magma Wyrm…

How To Get The Yoroi Samurai Armor In Halo Infinite On Xbox, PC

Image: 343 Industries

See that kick-ass suit of armor at the top of the post? That’s a prize available for knocking out objectives in Halo Infinite’s first timed event, dubbed “Fracture: Tenrai,” which went live on Xbox and PC this afternoon and runs through November 30. For no other reason than “Ahhhh, look at it,” here’s another angle:

Screenshot: 343 Industries

It’s called the Yoroi “armor core,” and yeah, it’s glorious. The catch is that you won’t be able to unlock everything you see there in one week-long marathon, even if you play literally every hour before the event temporarily goes dark on November 30. Here’s everything you need to know about earning Halo Infinite’s ridiculously sick Yoroi armor and the affiliated rewards.

Do I need the premium battle pass?

Nope. The event is free to all players, per 343 Industries. It’s currently scheduled for three weeks during Halo Infinite’s first season:

  • Round one: Today through November 30
  • Round two: January 4, 2022, through January 10, 2022
  • Round three: February 1, 2022, through February 7, 2022

That said, players with the paid version of the battle pass will unlock rewards at a faster rate.

What the hell? Why?

Halo Infinite’s Fracture: Tenrai event ties rewards to an event-specific battle pass, which is automatically added to your account at no extra cost. Among your weekly challenges, you’ll see a handful that are marked by an orange banner on the side. For every one of those you complete, you’ll progress another level in the “Fracture: Tenrai” battle pass. (The event-specific challenges also grant typical experience, which goes toward filling out your standard battle pass, so you can progress through both in tandem.) Players who pony up for the premium battle pass are able to juggle, and thus work toward completing, four challenges at once, rather than the baseline three.

Screenshot: 343 Industries / Kotaku

You can only complete the event-specific challenges by playing the mode it’s tied to.

And what mode is that?

At the moment, Fracture: Tenrai plays out on a dedicated playlist for Fiesta, a legacy mode in Halo multiplayer that spawns players with randomized primary and secondary weapons. In Halo Infinite’s take on this mode you also start each life with a randomized piece of limited-use equipment—stuff like the repulsor, drop wall, and so on. And the typical spawn points for weapons and gear on each map are deactivated.

Read More: How To Master Every New Weapon In Halo Infinite

Fans have long enjoyed Fiesta for how unpredictably matches play out, and for how rapidly the tides can change. If someone on the losing team spawns with, say, an energy sword and a grappleshot, that’s more or less a guaranteed game-changing Killing Frenzy (the medal you get for scoring 10 kills without dying). But if two players on the winning team happen to get rocket launchers from the jump, well…

Right now, Fiesta only shows up as slayer (Halo speak for “deathmatch”) and is only playable on the seven close- and closeish-quarters maps: Recharge, Live Fire, Bazaar, Launch Site, Behemoth (the best one), Aquarius, and Streets.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment when asked if objective modes—like oddball and capture-the-flag—will be added over the course of the week, or for clarification about whether or not Fracture: Yoroi will once again play out on Fiesta during its subsequent appearances.

What are the challenges like?

The challenges for Fracture: Tenrai consist of fairly rote tasks like “earn 10 assists in Fiesta PvP” or “get a double kill in Fiesta PvP.” Those I’ve seen don’t seem terribly tough, especially if you’re planning on burning hours of your life playing Halo Infinite over the forthcoming holiday weekend.

Screenshot: 343 Industries

Don’t bet on completing the whole pass in one week, though. The base armor comes at level five—totally doable if you concentrate. But the awesome Yokai helmet (that’s the one with the horns) isn’t available until you hit level 25, and the event’s battle pass has 30 levels total.

Read More: Halo Infinite Improves Grindy Battle Pass, Gives Out Bonus Gift

I started the event with two Tenrai challenges on my battle pass. My list of upcoming weeklies shows only a further five. It’s unclear whether or not the total number of dedicated challenges is randomized or set at a hard seven, but no matter how you slice it, there’s no way to complete every level of the pass in one week. Even if you make liberal use of challenge swaps, and luck out in getting a Tenrai-affiliated one with every swap, there just aren’t 30 challenges in any given week.

While the event’s returning for a week each in January and February, 343 hasn’t formalized any further dates. But it has said the Tenrai event will occur six times over the course of Halo Infinite’s planned first season, which wraps in May 2022.

SNK’s Final Season Pass 3 Fighter For Samurai Shodown Has Been Revealed

SNK has revealed its latest fighter on the way to the 2019/20 Nintendo Switch release, Samurai Shodown.

Fans already knew the fourth and final slot in Season Pass 3 would be filled by a character from the Guilty Gear series and SNK has now confirmed it will go to Baiken. This fighter is scheduled to arrive later this week on 19th August.

Here’s a bit about the character and some screenshots:

From faraway lands travels this vengeful warrior. Along with her left eye and right arm, Baiken had lost everything when she was only a child. Now, shaped by that harrowing experience, she dedicates her life in tracking down the one responsible for everything—That Man. No land is too far, and no warrior is strong enough to stand in her way. With an unwavering blade and peerless sight, Baiken swears to track and cut down That Man.

Baiken from Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 joins Shiro Tokisada Amakusa, Hibiki Takane from The Last Blade 2 and Cham Cham.

Samurai Shodown X Guilty Gear character announcement is coming very, very soon

That’s totally not Baiken, wonder who it could be

Samurai Shodown helped revive the series to new heights back in 2019, and we’ll be seeing very shortly how they’re planning to likely send it off with a bang.

SNK announced tonight they’ll be releasing the reveal trailer for Samurai Shodown’s Guilty Gear crossover DLC character mere hours from now.

The new trailer will be officially dropping tomorrow, August 16, though the silhouette attached pretty much gives away who it’s going to be for anyone with any familiarity in Guilty Gear.

Unless they’re all trying to throw us for a loop, Baiken seems all but assuredly the pick to join the cast of SamSho, and honestly who could be a better pick — except maybe the likes of Nagoriyuki.

Funnily enough, this would mean that Baiken will become playable in Samurai Shodown before she makes an appearance in Guilty Gear Strive considering their next character is going to be Jack-O.

This new crossover fighter is going to mark the end of support in the game for Season 3, and while it hasn’t been officially confirmed by the developers, they will most likely also be the final addition to Samurai Shodown in general with The King of Fighters 15 set to release early next year.

Though no timing was mentioned in their post, we can probably expect the trailer to go live at the same time SNK normally does their KOF15 reveals, which is 7 p.m. PDT.

Be sure to check back in tomorrow night to see the mysterious character in action.
