Sean Payton trade grades: Broncos pony up for Super Bowl-winning head coach; Saints land two valuable picks

Sean Payton is heading to the Denver Broncos as the franchise’s next head coach, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, after Denver reportedly acquire his contractual rights from the New Orleans Saints. The Saints and Broncos have finalized trade compensation for head coach Sean Payton, according to ESPN, paving the way for the Super Bowl champion head coach to become Denver’s next head coach.

Denver sends its 2023 first-round pick from San Francisco (No. 30 overall) and a 2024 second-round pick to New Orleans for Payton and its 2024 third-round pick, according to Adam Schefter. The first-round pick being sent by Denver is actually the one acquired from the Dolphins in exchange for linebacker Bradley Chubb. Miami acquired the pick initially from the 49ers as part of the Trey Lance deal. The Dolphins no longer have a first-round pick in 2023 after their own was forfeited as a result of the Tom Brady tampering investigation. Now, Denver joins Miami as a team lacking a first-round pick in the upcoming draft since they sent their own first-rounder as part of larger deal to the Seattle Seahawks to acquire quarterback Russell Wilson.

Payton, 59, last coached for the Saints in 2021 but remains under contract, which is why a trade needed to be completed. With the Saints, he became the winningest coach in franchise history with a 152-89 record (.631 winning percentage) and a 9-8 record in the playoffs. New Orleans had one playoff win in team history before Payton’s arrival. The Saints reached the mountaintop in Super Bowl XLIV, their only championship in team history under Payton’s leadership. With him and predominantly future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, the Saints attack ranked second in points per game (27.5), first in total yards per game (391.4), first in third-down conversion rate (45.4%) and first red zone conversion rate (61.1%) from 2006-2021. Those ranks exclude the 2012 season in which Payton was suspended for the team’s Bountygate scandal.

This trade and hire of Payton came in large part because Russell Wilson struggled mightily in his first season as a Bronco. He completed only 60% of his passes for 16 passing scores, 11 interceptions and an 84.4 passer rating. Those all ranked 25th or worse across the league. Wilson went 4-11 as a starter, which led to first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett being fired before the conclusion of the 2022 season. The Broncos averaged 16.9 points per game in 2022, the lowest in the entire league.

Here’s the total compensation the Broncos have parted with to make Russell Wilson their franchise quarterback — the team signed him to a five-year, $245 million extension before he took a regular season snap with the team — and Sean Payton their newest head coach. Here’s the Broncos’ total haul for both Russell Wilson and Sean Payton:

Broncos Traded

Three first-round picks
Three second-round picks
2022 5th-round pick
QB Drew Lock
TE Noah Fant
DL Shelby Harris

Broncos Received

QB Russell Wilson
HC Sean Payton
2022 fourth-round pick
2024 third-round pick

Below are trade grades for both the Broncos and Saints on the deal that sent Payton to Mile High. The Broncos will be graded on a curve because of their significant investment in Russell Wilson.

Sean Payton trade grades

Saints: A

New Orleans coming away with a first-round pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft AND a 2024 second-round pick for its best head coach in team history is an absolute steal. Payton retired/resigned as the Saints’ head coach following the 2021 season after looking around the room and realizing life in New Orleans wasn’t as rosy without Drew Brees. Normally, a team trying to trade a disgruntled star player under contract leads to a lower return than the team parting with the star would’ve hoped. Yet the Saints were able to coerce the Broncos into parting with two top-round picks anyways because of their desperation. Phenomenal job by Saints general manager Mickey Loomis.

New Orleans will now be able to participate in the first round of the upcoming draft after it traded away its own pick to the Philadelphia Eagles a year ago. This trade doesn’t completely fix that mistake since this pick will be at the back end of the first round instead of the top 10 like their own pick would have been, but Loomis got within the ballpark of what he could have hoped for when parting with someone who no longer wanted to be a part of the franchise despite not having a crazy amount of leverage.

Broncos: B+

This grade comes with the acknowledgement that the franchise has tied themselves to Russell Wilson for better or worse with the trade and contract extension they made for him.

This was a trade and hire Denver had to make considering its heavy investment in Wilson. The Broncos gave the declining quarterback $165 million in guaranteed money, including $124 million at the signing of his five-year, $245 million extension, according to OverTheCap.com. General manager George Paton needs Wilson to return to form after he had the worst year of his career in 2022 since new ownership who didn’t hire him now runs the show. While schematically Payton’s up-tempo, quick passing offense that featured Drew Brees reading defenses almost exclusively from the pocket is a contrast from Wilson’s best strength over the course of his career, his ability to create outside of the pocket, the Broncos had to go get the coach who has had the most success with a shorter quarterback in NFL history.

Normally giving up this type of haul for someone who isn’t even an active player would be somewhere in the B- to C range, but the Broncos get a B+ because they were able to complete a deal that positions Wilson to have the best chance at a career revival. If Wilson can’t rebound with Payton as his head coach and play-caller, that’s an indictment on the quarterback. The Broncos’ front office and ownership group can sleep soundly at night knowing they did everything in their power to succeed with Russell Wilson and make good on their heavy-handed investment in him.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West attend North and Saint’s basketball match

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West attend North and Saint’s basketball match

Kim Kardashian and her ex-husband, Kanye West kept their distance as they attended North and Saint’s basketball game in Los Angeles on Friday, January 27, 2023, per Daily Mail.

The rapper was accompanied by his new ‘wife’ Bianca Censori. Meanwhile, closely following behind the reality TV star, Kardashian, was her sister’s ex Tristan Thompson.

The NBA player was spotted strolling close behind Kim as they entered the building before the basketball game commenced. Recently, Kim flew to Toronto, accompanying Khloe and mom Kris to attend the funeral of Tristan’s mother.

Kanye, also known as Ye, was soon also spotted arriving at the venue with Bianca as they pulled into a parking lot in a sleek, black Mercedes SUV. The rapper could be seen in the driver’s seat with his new wife sitting on the passenger side.

Her short blonde locks, which are naturally brunette, were parted to the side and styled into a chic bob as she prepared to exit the vehicle.

West recently was the subject of many headlines two weeks earlier after reportedly having a private wedding ceremony with Censori, 27, a Yeezy architect, who has worked with the company since November 2020.

Prior to the outing, North joined her dad and new step-mom for dinner. The Daily Mail obtained photos of Kanye, 45, and the Yeezy architectural designer, 27, waiting for the 9-year-old to arrive at Nobu in Malibu.

A security team was then seen dropping off North and one of her friends at the Japanese restaurant.

Censori, who bore a striking resemblance to the “Kardashians” star before chopping off her hair and dyeing it blond, has not been in Kim’s good books since she started working full-time at Yeezy in November 2020, via Page Six.

“Kim hates her. [She] has a bad opinion of her,” an insider told the outlet earlier this month. “This woman has done stuff to make herself look like Kim.”

The source added, “It’s already a nightmare co-parenting with [Kanye]; this is just another wrench.”

Saints win appeal, Cameron Jordan blasts lack of investigation before fine for fake injury

Getty Images

The Saints have been exonerated in their appeal of NFL discipline after defensive end Cameron Jordan was accused of faking an injury, and now Jordan is questioning the league’s process on the matter.

Jordan won the appeal of his $50,000 fine, and according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN, Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen won the appeal of his $50,000 fine, head coach Dennis Allen won the appeal of his $100,000 fine and the Saints franchise won the appeal of its $350,000 fine.

Jordan told the Associated Press that the NFL reviewed his medical records during the appeals process, but that should have happened before the fines were issued.

“There should be due process before they announce a fine,” Jordan said. “They announced they’d fine me $50,000 and my team $500,000 in total before the appeal process or even investigating the situation.”

The incident in question took place during the Saints’ loss to the Buccaneers in December. After the Buccaneers were stopped on third down, their offense appeared to be rushing to the line of scrimmage to try to quickly go for it on fourth down. Jordan fell to the ground, causing an injury timeout, after which the Buccaneers punted. The league thought Jordan was faking.

But the Saints said when Jordan went to the sideline he immediately sought treatment from a trainer for a foot injury, and that Jordan went to the team facility every day that week, even though the players were off because the Saints were on their bye, to get treatment on his foot.

Eagles vs. Saints score, takeaways: New Orleans prevents Philly from clinching home-field advantage in NFC

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles will have one more chance to clinch home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs after failing to accomplish the task, thanks to a brutal 20-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints at Lincoln Financial Field. In what was arguably their worst offensive performance of the season, the Eagles couldn’t muster more than 10 points against the Saints defense with Jalen Hurts missing his second consecutive game.

Gardner Minshew sealed the Eagles’ fate by throwing an interception to Marshon Lattimore that was returned 12 yards for a touchdown with 5:10 to play. The Eagles, trailing 13-10, needed to go 91 yards for the win but the first giveaway for the team came at the worst possible time. Philadelphia never led in this one, going three-and-out on its first four possessions and allowing New Orleans to build a 13-point lead the Eagles couldn’t overcome.

The Saints took the lead on a 15-play, 75-yard drive to start the game that took 8:58 off the clock, capped by a Taysom Hill 1-yard touchdown run to put the New Orleans up 7-0. Wil Lutz hit 54- and 20-yard field goals to extend the lead to 13-0 prior to the half. The Saints hung on from there, stopping the Eagles on a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak by Minshew in the fourth quarter and Lattimore intercepting Minshew in the fourth quarter to hang on for the victory.

Philadelphia will have to win in Week 18 against the New York Giants, who clinched a playoff spot and the No. 6 seed Sunday, to claim the NFC East crown and home-field advantage for the playoffs. New Orleans kept its shot for the NFC South alive with the win, but the Saints were eliminated from playoff contention with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beating the Carolina Panthers Sunday.

Why the Saints won

New Orleans defense came to play against Philadelphia, holding the Eagles offense to a season-low 10 points and just 313 yards in the loss. The defense kept the Eagles offense in check by getting pressure on Gardner Minshew, only pressuring him 12 times but getting six sacks. Cameron Jordan had four pressures and three sacks in the win, taking advantage of an Eagles offensive line that didn’t have Lane Johnson.

The offense built enough of a lead early to hold on at the end, with Marshon Lattimore sealing the victory with an interception return for a touchdown off Minshew in the fourth quarter. The Saints defense has allowed just 38 points in the last three quarters.

Why the Eagles lost

Philadelphia’s offense clearly misses Jalen Hurts, as the Eagles had just one offensive touchdown in the loss. Minshew couldn’t convert a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak with 8:35 left and threw an interception return for a touchdown on the next possession to seal the win for New Orleans. The Eagles started its first four possessions with three-and-outs, very uncharacteristic for the highest-scoring offense in football heading into Week 17. They ran the ball just twice in those possessions and had just 21 yards as the Saints built a 13-0 lead.

The Eagles were off all day, but still had a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. They’ll get Hurts back next week in a must-win game for home-field advantage.

Turning point

The Eagles were at midfield with 8:35 left in a 13-10 game and facing a fourth-and-1 in a 13-10 game. With the momentum going, Philadelphia called Minshew’s number to get the first down on a quarterback sneak — but he failed to convert. Jalen Hurts was 27 of 30 on quarterback sneaks this season while Minshew was 1 of 2 — including Sunday’s failed attempt.

Philadelphia didn’t have Hurts, but tried the sneak anyway. That showcases how valuable he is to an offense.

Play of the game

Marshon Lattimore’s interception off Gardner Minshew was the takeaway the Saints needed to steal the victory in Philadelphia. With 5:31 left in a 13-10 game, Lattimore easily read Minshew’s slant route to A.J. Brown and snatched the ball before it even got there — ending the Eagles chances at a win.

Minshew has thrown three crucial interception in the second half of his two games, all of which played a significant role in losses. The Eagles could have taken the lead, having the ball with 91 yards to score with just over six minutes left when the possession started.

The quote

“We can’t expect the season to go peaches and cream and go our way all the time. Unfortunately we put ourselves in this position and we gotta find a way to win next week.” — James Bradberry to CBS Sports on the recent adversity the Eagles are facing.

Philadelphia has failed to wrap up home-field advantage the last two weeks. The Eagles still control their own destiny, needing a win over the Giants — who have nothing to play for — next week.

Up next

The Eagles (13-3) face the New York Giants in their regular season finale, with a win needed to seal home-field advantage. The Saints (7-9) end their season against the Panthers.

Tom Brady makes record 44th fourth-quarter comeback as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New Orleans Saints

CNN
 —

When his team trails in the fourth quarter, Tom Brady is almost inevitable.

Down 13 points against the New Orleans Saints in the closing minutes, Brady steered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an improbable 17-16 win on Monday Night Football.

In the process, he passed Peyton Manning for the most career fourth-quarter comebacks (44) in the history of the NFL.

The win was extraordinary even by Brady’s standards, marking the largest regular-season fourth-quarter comeback in his career, according to ESPN.

“Just like we drew it up,” was the 45-year-old’s response when he arrived at the post-game press conference, prompting a ripple of laughter from those in attendance.

The comeback started with 5:21 remaining when Brady led the Bucs on a 10-play drive which ended when he found Cade Otton with a touchdown pass from one yard out.

That brought Tampa Bay within six points before Brady orchestrated an 11-play, game-winning drive and found Rachaad White for the touchdown with three seconds remaining.

Ryan Succop’s extra point made the difference between the two teams, moving the Bucs to 6-6 on the season at the top of the NFC South while the Saints drop to 4-9.

Brady ended the night 36-of-54 passing for 281 yards and later dedicated the win to his daughter Vivian, who celebrated her 10th birthday on Monday.

Having announced his retirement earlier this year only to reverse the decision, the win was evidence the seven-time Super Bowl champion is not yet done on the football field.

“We’ve got a lot games coming down to the end, some we’ve won, some we’ve lost, which is why we’re 6-6,” Brady told reporters. “It’s not where we want to be, but we’ll keep fighting.”

For the Saints, it was a frustrating night against their division rivals at Raymond James Stadium.

Quarterback Andy Dalton was 20 of 28 for 229 yards and one touchdown, which came when he connected with Taysom Hill in the second quarter. They were otherwise restricted to three field goals from Wil Lutz.

“I feel like a broken record saying the same thing over and over again,” said Dalton. “We just missed opportunities.”

Coach Dennis Allen shared Dalton’s frustration: “We gave ourselves every chance and didn’t get it done … I felt like we had an opportunity to win this game and didn’t finish,” he said.

New Orleans have a bye this weekend and next face the Atlanta Falcons on December 18, while Tampa Bay play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Buccaneers’ Tom Brady had reporters laughing with sarcastic response to stunning win vs. Saints

After completely shocking the New Orleans Saints with yet another game-winning drive, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady fixed his unzipped jacket as he walked into the press conference room and said the only thing you’d expect him to say at this point in his illustrious career.

“Just like we drew it up,” Brady said smiling to a laughing crowd of reporters.

The mix of emotions from Brady throughout the game – screaming on the sideline in frustration with how the offense was sputtering to celebrating Rachaad White’s game-winning touchdown to seal a 17-6 stunning victory – was edge-of-your-seat-type stuff.

But after seeing this same film played out for years, it’s almost expected at this point when Brady has enough time left in the game to win it if the score says there’s a chance.

The score was 16-3 in the fourth quarter, and Brady had only won a game down 13-or-more points in the fourth once in his career. That was Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons that resulted in an overtime victory with the New England Patriots.

Overtime wasn’t needed for this one. Instead, Brady just needed to find the end zone for the first time in the game with rookie tight end Cade Otton hauling in a one-yard bootleg pass from the G.O.A.T to bring the Bucs within six points.

Feeling the pressure, New Orleans needed a couple of first downs to ice the game, as the Bucs had all three timeouts still on their sideline.

Instead, Andy Dalton and his bunch went three-and-out, burning just two of the Buccaneers’ timeouts and the two-minute warning not yet reached, effectively giving Brady two timeouts and more than enough time to win the game with a touchdown and successful extra point.

At that point in the game, yeah, it’s just like Brady has drawn it up multiple times before. He dissected the Saints’ defense with short, methodic passes to allow his receivers to get out of bounds.

And when he needed that big play, he found Julio Jones, who hauled in a pass on a tremendous leaping grab that set the Bucs up on the Saints’ five-yard line.

Brady, then found Chris Godwin for what would’ve been the game-winning touchdown had left tackle Donovan Smith, the most penalized offensive lineman in the NFL this season, not been called for holding.

Nonetheless, Brady found Godwin again for nine yards to give the Bucs a chance from the Saints’ six-yard line.

That’s when Brady waited for White to win his matchup on linebacker Demario Davis and stretched his body into the end zone. Ryan Succop’s extra point was good and Brady added his 44th game-winning drive to his future Hall of Fame resume.

The season hasn’t been drawn up the way Brady would like at this point, as Tampa Bay gutted out just their sixth win of the season.

But the Bucs sit atop a dreadful NFC South division, and separate themselves a bit from the pack with this win.

So, while there wasn’t a lot to smile or joke about during most of this game, all that matters is a win – something Brady is used to doing in crunch time.

Brady finished the game with 281 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 36 of 54 passing.

Tom Brady and Bucs find a way to beat Saints on game-winning TD in final seconds

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense isn’t capable of playing well for 60 minutes. If that was going to happen, it would have by this point in the season.

But all the Buccaneers needed Monday night to score a huge win in the NFC South race was play well for about five minutes. And the greatest quarterback in NFL history was there to make sure it happened.

Tampa Bay, which trailed by 13 late in the fourth quarter and looked like it had no chance to put up any touchdowns, scored with three minutes remaining. Then, the defense forced a quick punt and gave the ball back to Tom Brady, who led a game-winning drive. Brady might not be the same player he has been for a couple decades, but he’s still capable of some magic moments. Brady hit running back Rachaad White for a 6-yard touchdown with three seconds left, and the extra point gave Tampa Bay a dramatic 17-16 win. The Buccaneers improved to 6-6, and are in position to win a bad division.

The Buccaneers hadn’t won when trailing by 8 or more points in the fourth quarter since 2012, ESPN said on its broadcast. They really had no business winning on Monday night. But when Brady needed to make some plays in crunch time, he came through like he has so many times before.

Before Monday night, Brady was 0-37 in the regular season and 1-43 in the playoffs when trailing by 13 or more points in the fourth quarter, according to ESPN Stats and Info. The only win when facing that type of deficit before the comeback against the Saints was Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons.

Bucs struggle to move the ball

The game started well for the Buccaneers. They had a 16-play, 72-yard drive and even though it ended with a field goal, it was a positive start.

Then Tampa Bay stopped scoring. For the rest of the half they had three punts, an interception and they kneeled to end the first half.

New Orleans wasn’t much better on offense but the Saints did hit a 30-yard touchdown pass to Taysom Hill. They got a field goal late in the half and led 10-3 at halftime. Offensively it wasn’t a great performance, but the defense kept the Saints in the game.

The Saints haven’t done a lot right this season, but coach Dennis Allen has been fantastic against Tampa Bay during the Brady era. Last season, the Saints shut out the Buccaneers 9-0. Since he joined the Buccaneers, Brady was just 1-4 against the Saints in the regular season coming into the day (though the Bucs did get a playoff win over New Orleans on their way to a Super Bowl title).

For about 55 minutes, it looked like Allen had Brady’s number again and the Saints, who were 4-8 coming into the game, would get back in the NFC South race with a huge win. But Brady found a way, somehow.

Bucs, Tom Brady pull out a great win

There didn’t seem to be much hope for the Buccaneers to come back after the Saints took a 16-3 lead in the fourth quarter. The offense couldn’t sustain drives and the defense seemed to be worn out and couldn’t get off the field in the second half. The Saints had two marathon drives. Both drives ended in field goals but it wasn’t like Tampa Bay was scoring quickly. Or at all.

In the fourth quarter, with about seven minutes left, the Buccaneers faced fourth-and-10 in their own territory. Brady tried to lobby the coaches to go for it. Tampa Bay left the offense on the field for a moment, then sent on the punt team. It made some sense to go for it there, but Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles punted and relied on his defense.

The Buccaneers finally came alive on offense. They scored with three minutes left. A pass interference call on a long pass to Mike Evans set up a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cade Otton. The Buccaneers got a three-and-out to force a punt after that, with a huge hit from safety Keanu Neal knocking a great Andy Dalton pass incomplete from Hill’s hands. That gave Brady a chance to pull out a game that was incredibly ugly for Tampa Bay through three-and-a-half quarters.

Brady came alive for the two-minute drill. Scotty Miller caught a first down to the Saints’ 20-yard line. Julio Jones made a circus catch down to the 5-yard line with about 30 seconds left. Chris Godwin caught what would have been a touchdown but left tackle Donovan Smith was called for a holding penalty, which put the Buccaneers in a tough spot. It didn’t matter. Brady just threw another touchdown pass.

The Buccaneers aren’t very good this season. But they’re likely to go to the playoffs. And Brady showed that he’s still capable of making some memories. At 45 years old, he’s still adding to his legacy.

Saints stick with QB Andy Dalton after mulling change

The New Orleans Saints are sticking with quarterback Andy Dalton, according to coach Dennis Allen.

“We’re going to go with Andy. We discussed it as a staff. I got an opportunity to talk to both quarterbacks, and I feel like right now, Andy is the direction that we want to go,” Allen said Wednesday.

Allen hinted earlier in the week that Dalton’s job might not be safe after the offense averaged under 215 passing yards and 11.5 points in losses to the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

He said on Monday that Jameis Winston could be a candidate to start against the Los Angeles Rams this weekend but said he had not made the decision at that point.

Dalton has started the past seven games for the Saints after Winston struggled to play through various back and foot injuries at the beginning of the season.

Allen said that Winston is still not 100% healthy and possibly won’t be back at 100% before the season ends. The Saints also have a heavily compromised offensive line, with center Erik McCoy on injured reserve, guard Andrus Peat injured and left tackle James Hurst in the concussion protocol.

All of those things likely were potential factors in the decision this week.

“We’re not going to belabor this point, but yet, a lot of the factors just went into how we’re playing and how we’re operating, obviously,” Allen said. “And it’s not good enough, but part of the factor is, there’s a lot of elements in this team that have to improve, and there’s a lot of other areas that we have to work on to help in that regard, so we’ll play better as a team. You kind of want to look at one spot, but there’s a lot of positions that have to play better, and that’s where we’re starting.”
