Marcus Rashford ruled out until October in blow to Manchester United | Marcus Rashford

Manchester United have been dealt a significant blow with Marcus Rashford deciding he needs surgery on a shoulder injury. The striker, who has endured racist abuse after his missed penalty in England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy on Sunday, may not be available for United until the end of October.

Rashford, 23, was hampered by the shoulder muscle tear last season and was picked in the European Championship squad despite not being 100% fit. He underwent a scan on Tuesday and a decision was taken that surgery was the only option. However, it is understood the operation will not take place for a couple of weeks. It is likely he will be out of action for 12 weeks following the procedure, but has an outside chance of returning for United’s Premier League match against Liverpool at Old Trafford on 23 October.

The news is a further blow to Rashford who has endured a difficult 48 hours since the final defeat at Wembley. He, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were targeted for racial abuse online after they missed penalties in the shootout defeat. Rashford’s mural in Withington, Manchester, was also vandalised but has since been covered in messages of support by the community.

On Monday, Rashford issued a statement saying sorry for his miss but said he “will never apologise for who I am”. He added: “I’ve had a difficult season, I think that’s been clear for everyone to see and I probably went into that final with a lack of confidence.”

Sancho, meanwhile, is close to sealing his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund to United after completing his medical.

Phew, an Earth Impact From a Notorious Asteroid Was Just Ruled Out by Astronomers

When it comes back around again in 2068, the asteroid Apophis will have practically no chance of hitting Earth.

In fact, the 370-meter (1,210-foot) chunk of space rock won’t pose any sort of danger for at least another century, leading to its removal from both the ESA’s Risk List, and NASA’s Sentry Impact Risk Table.

“With the support of recent optical observations and additional radar observations, the uncertainty in Apophis’s orbit has collapsed from hundreds of kilometers to just a handful of kilometers when projected to 2029,” said astronomer Davide Farnocchia of NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.

“This greatly improved knowledge of its position in 2029 provides more certainty of its future motion, so we can now remove Apophis from the risk list.”

Apophis was first discovered in 2004, and initial projections suggested the asteroid had a worrying 2.7 percent chance of impacting Earth in 2029. Although this was quickly ruled out, Apophis has a close approach to Earth roughly every eight years; because its orbit has been tricky to observe and characterize, the possibility of an impact at a later date remained undefined.

Gradually, over the 17 years that astronomers have been watching Apophis, its path through space has become clearer.

Last year, the biggest danger was determined to be the asteroid’s 2068 close approach. Farnocchia and his colleague David Tholen measured the Yarkovsky effect – that is, the heating on the asteroid’s Sun side that generates a small amount  of thrust – and found that it generates 170 meters of drift a year.

The other big potential problem affecting the asteroid’s path is that 2029 flyby. According to projections, Apophis will fly past Earth at a distance of just 38,000 kilometers – roughly 10 times closer than the Moon. At that proximity, Earth’s gravity will affect the asteroid’s orbit, possibly bringing it closer to a collision course.

With these two influences in mind, the astronomers recalculated the projection of Apophis’s path. The chance of impact in 2068 remained. It was only one in 150,000, but that’s still a concern, considering how much damage it could do.

Now more data has been added to the calculations. The asteroid’s most recent flyby was just a few weeks ago – on 6 March 2021, Apophis came within 16.9 million kilometers of Earth.

For months prior, it had been visible in the sky, and astronomers watched it closely; then the March 6 flyby allowed scientists to narrow down its location to an incredibly precise distance of 150 meters.

In turn, the finding allowed for further refinement of the projections, and we’re now officially safe from Apophis for a very long time indeed. Considering that the asteroid has been sitting on the Risk List and the Sentry Impact Risk Table since it was discovered, this is a big relief.

When Apophis does swing by in 2029, it will afford scientists an excellent opportunity to study its size, shape, and spin rate, without the threat of doom looming, too. It will be the last such opportunity for a while – after 2029, its ‘close approaches’ will grow more and more distant.

“When I started working with asteroids after college, Apophis was the poster child for hazardous asteroids,” Farnocchia said.

“There’s a certain sense of satisfaction to see it removed from the risk list, and we’re looking forward to the science we might uncover during its close approach in 2029.”

LeBron James injury update: Lakers star ruled out for remainder of game vs. Hawks after twisting his ankle

Getty Images

It turns out that Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James isn’t indestructible after all. In L.A.’s matchup with the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday afternoon, James was forced to leave the game and head back to the locker room after twisting his ankle during the second quarter. While trying to secure a loose ball, Hawks forward Solomon Hill fell on top of James’ right ankle and James fell to the floor in pain.

James didn’t sub out of the game right away. In fact, he stayed in the contest and knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner before he checked out and headed back to the locker room. The Lakers star is scheduled to have an MRI done to determine the severity of the injury, according to ESPN. You can see the events unfold below:

Shortly after James exited the contest it was announced that he would not return to the game. The initial diagnosis is a right ankle injury. Obviously, the Lakers will be hoping that the injury isn’t too serious, as they are already without All-Star forward Anthony Davis due to a calf strain in his right leg.

Even if the injury isn’t super serious there’s still a chance that James could miss some more action, as the Lakers will obviously want to be exceedingly careful with their best player. The most important thing for L.A. is that James is healthy for postseason play. The Lakers will likely provide an update on James’ status for their upcoming string of games — against the Suns on Sunday, Pelicans on Tuesday, and 76ers on Thursday — in the near future.

NHTSA investigating ‘violent’ Tesla crash, Autopilot not ruled out yet

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a “violent” crash that involved a Tesla sedan and a tractor trailer late last week in Detroit. Investigators have not yet said whether Tesla’s Autopilot, FSD or FSD beta may have contributed to the crash.

The NHTSA said Monday in a statement, “NHTSA is aware of the violent crash that occurred on March 11 in Detroit involving a Tesla and a tractor trailer. We have launched a Special Crash Investigation team to investigate the crash.” Reuters previously reported the probe.

The Detroit police department said in an email that the crash happened when a Tesla piloted by “an unknown male driver” hit a semi-truck and “became wedged under the trailer.” A passenger in the car is in critical condition, and the circumstances of the accident still under investigation.

The NHTSA has previously embarked on probes into more than a dozen crashes that were thought to involve Tesla’s advanced driver assist systems.

These systems include Tesla’s standard Autopilot package, and a more advanced option marketed as Full Self-Driving, which is sold today for $10,000. The company’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (or FSD) technology do not make Tesla vehicles safe for operation without a driver at the wheel. Some customers who purchase the FSD option also get access to a “beta” version to try the newest features that are being added to the system before all bugs are worked out.

Investigators have not yet said whether any of these systems were in use during or just before the March 11 crash in Detroit. However, Tesla vehicles with Autopilot have collided with stationary objects and large vehicles, including tractor trailers and fire trucks, on multiple occasions.

A 50-year-old, Jeremy Beren Banner of Lake Worth, Florida, died when his Model 3 on Autopilot struck the side of a semi-trailer in Florida on March 1, 2019, resulting in the roof of his car being sheared off as it passed underneath.

Tesla’s Autopilot system, while it has changed significantly over the years, has been a subject of regulatory scrutiny since 2016 when an owner named Joshua Brown died driving his Tesla Model S with Autopilot engaged around Gainsville, Florida. The vehicle also collided with a tractor trailer.

Another federal vehicle safety watchdog that gives recommendations to NHTSA, the National Transportation Safety Board, recently called for clear and stringent rules for automated driving systems at a federal level. The board has pointed to Tesla’s approach to automated driving systems as a reason why stronger safety requirements and clear regulation are needed.

Kevin Durant ruled out due to COVID-19 protocols after coming off bench vs. Toronto Raptors

In a bizarre back-and-forth, Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant’s night culminated with him being unexpectedly pulled from Friday’s 123-117 loss to the Toronto Raptors in the third quarter due to the health and safety protocols.

Durant was initially not available to start Friday’s game because someone he interacted with earlier in the day had an inconclusive test result for COVID-19, the league explained in a statement. He later came off the bench and checked into the game at the 4:13 mark of the first quarter.

“Durant was initially held out of the game while that result was being reviewed,” the statement read. “Under the league’s health and safety protocols, we do not require a player to be quarantined until a close contact has a confirmed positive test.”

However, during the game, a positive result was returned for that person and Durant was removed from the game in the third quarter “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the league.

Durant has tested negative for COVID-19 three times in the past 24 hours, including two PCR tests on Friday, the league said. Contact tracing is underway to determine if Durant was in fact a close contact of the individual who tested positive.

The rest of the Nets have been cleared to travel to Philadelphia for Saturday’s game against the 76ers, but Durant will not make the trip, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

As he sat on a bench during a break, Durant was informed by a Nets staffer he was being pulled from the game. A visibly stunned Durant shook his head and as he walked through the tunnel to the locker room tossed a water bottle in frustration.

Durant tweeted “Free me” shortly after being removed then criticized the NBA in another tweet after the game.

Durant finished with just 8 points on 3-of-8 shooting in 19 minutes, plus 6 rebounds and 5 assists. It marked only the second time in the past 10 seasons Durant failed to reach double figures, breaking a streak of 166 straight games. Durant scored zero points Feb. 28, 2017, against the Wizards, leaving the game 90 seconds in after an injury to his knee.

Friday’s game also marked the first time Durant has come off the bench in his 13-year NBA career.

Moments before he was pulled from the game, Durant was whistled for his fifth foul, but the Nets won a challenge to overturn the call on the floor. It’s the first time in Durant’s career he finished a game with more fouls than field goals.

Durant, who had COVID-19 last March, is the second-leading scorer in the NBA, averaging 30.8 points per game. He previously missed three games in early January due to the health and safety protocols.

Kylie later revealed on an episode of Life of Kylie that she broke things off with the rapper.

‘There was absolutely nothing wrong with me and T. There was no crazy fight. We decided — well, I decided — that I’m really young,’ she said.

‘I don’t want to look back in five years from now and feel like he took something from me, when he’s really not that type of person,’ she added.

Within weeks of breaking up with Tyga, Kylie had moved on with Travis.

Travis had been linked to a number of celebrities before Jenner, including Rubi Rose, Chantal Jeffries, Rihanna and Justine Skye.
