NFL trade deadline winners and losers: Dolphins, Vikings swing big deals, while Packers, Rams whiff

Once an overlooked part of the calendar, the league’s trade deadline has become one of the most important and craziest times of the NFL season. This year’s trade deadline did not disappoint, as a record 12 players were traded on deadline day, the most in the last 30 years.

Which team bettered their odds at winning Super Bowl LVII? Conversely, which teams may have taken themselves out of title contention? We have those answers below with our winners and losers at the deadline.

Miami sent Denver a 2023 first-round pick, its 2024 fourth-round pick and running back Chase Edmonds. The Broncos added in a 2025 fifth-round pick as part of the deal that sent Chubb to South Beach. With the acquisition of Chubb, the Dolphins have a player who already has 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles this season. Chubb’s addition to an already talented defense — opposite an offense that has taken big strides — should be enough to end Miami’s six-year playoff drought.

With Edmonds gone, the Dolphins acquired 49ers running back Jeff Wilson in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick just before the deadline. The move reunites Wilson with fellow former 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, who is on pace for his best season to date, as well as head coach Mike McDaniel, who was the offensive coordinator for Wilson and Mostert in San Francisco. The Dolphins were aggressive, and it has a good chance of paying off.

Loser: Green Bay Packers

The Packers were clearly missing an impact wide receiver, and with the trade deadline over, that hasn’t changed. As CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson reported, the Packers were potentially going to offer the best deal for Chase Claypool, giving Aaron Rodgers much-needed help at receiver. Instead, the Bears swooped in and got Claypool, as the Packers failed to get him or any other receiver who reportedly was on the trading block. Rodgers will continue to have to make do with a receiving corps that has struggled to fill Davante Adams’ shoes.

The Vikings were able to acquire a talented tight end — T.J. Hockenson — from a division rival. A former No. 8 overall pick, no less. And they did so without breaking the bank, sending future second and third-round picks to Detroit while also receiving a future fourth-round picks (including a 2024 conditional pick) as part of the deal.

By acquiring Hockenson, the Vikings reinforced their status as one of the NFC’s upper echelon teams and a legitimate contender to represent the conference in the Super Bowl. Hockenson brings another element to a Vikings offense that also features Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen, Dalvin Cook and Kirk Cousins.

The Giants made several calls but ultimately stood pat at the deadline. New York’s lack of moves was surely a disappointment for Giants fans given the team’s surprising 6-2 start. Giants fans may not be blue for long, however, as GM Joe Schoen said after the deadline that he would consider bringing Odell Beckham Jr. back after New York was unable to trade for a receiver at the deadline.

Just watch the 49ers’ blowout victory over the Rams this past Sunday if you want to grade the team’s trade acquisition of Christian McCaffrey. The former Panthers All-Pro running back became the fourth player since the 1970 merger to throw, catch and run for touchdowns in the same game.

The addition of McCaffrey — which actually happened more than a week ago but technically came at the deadline — puts the 49ers in position to eventually win the NFC West over competitors Los Angeles, Arizona and Seattle. The fact that the 49ers didn’t need to give up a first-round pick for McCaffrey is another feather in GM John Lynch’s cap.

Despite Jerry Jones’ posturing, the Cowboys did not make a splashy trade ahead of the deadline. Receiver was the position the Cowboys would have likely strengthened, but the Cowboys did not make a trade and will continue to move forward with CeeDee Lamb and Noah Brown headlining the receiving corps. There was a report that the team was close to adding Brandin Cooks, but money was the issue.

The fact that the Cowboys did not make a trade at the deadline would suggest that Jones and Co. have faith that Michael Gallup will have a better second half of the season as he continues to work his way back from ACL surgery.

Credit the Bears getting value for two players — Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn — that everyone knew no longer were part of the Bears’ future. But the fact that it came down to that is not a good thing for the Bears, who parted ways with one of the NFL’s best inside linebackers and a pass rusher that was coming off of an 18.5 sack season in a matter of days.

The Bears used the second-round pick that they received in the Smith trade to acquire Chase Claypool, a talented yet underperforming player during his two-plus years with the Steelers. The fact that the Bears reportedly kept the rival Packers from acquiring Claypool makes Chicago a deadline winner.

Loser: Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were edged out by the 49ers in the race to land Christian McCaffrey. Los Angeles ultimately didn’t do anything at the deadline, which means that the Rams will have to rely on their current roster to get themselves out of the hole they’re in. Los Angeles, 3-4 following last Sunday’s loss, is in need of several positional upgrades, including on the offensive line, receiver and running back.

Speaking of running back, the Rams were unable to deal Cam Akers before the deadline — a missed opportunity, as it appears Akers’ working relationship with the team appears to be over.

Baltimore is taking advantage of their moment to pull away in the AFC North while gaining ground on conference powerhouses Buffalo and Kansas City. The Ravens acquired a prolific tackler in Roquan Smith while getting the Bears to continue to pay for most of his $5.408 million salary (Baltimore is on the hook for just $575,000 of Smith’s 2022 salary).

The Ravens are getting a 25-year-old linebacker who is smack dab in the middle of his prime. Smith already has 83 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions this season.

Chidobe Awuzie’s injury suffered Monday night should have compelled the Bengals to try to trade for a cornerback at the deadline. Not only did Cincinnati did not address their new need, they also failed to address two other needs that were exploited during Monday night’s blowout loss in Cleveland.

With Ja’Marr Chase out for at least the next several games, the Bengals should have tried to acquire another playmaker on offense, either a veteran receiver or a versatile running back. Cincinnati could have also used an upgrade on the offensive line after Joe Burrow was sacked five times by the Browns’ defense.

The Eagles’ recent acquisition of Robert Quinn reinforced the fact that Philadelphia is going all in after its 7-0 start. While he didn’t get a sack in his Eagles debut, Quinn was part of a defense that tormented Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett while holding Pittsburgh to just 13 points. Along with his tangible skills, Quinn adds leadership to a young and talented Eagles defense.

Denver wasn’t able to swing trades for Jerry Jeudy or K.J. Hamler despite reported interest in both players. The Broncos also missed an opportunity to add depth at quarterback behind Russell Wilson. Pittsburgh quarterbacks Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph would have made sense for the Broncos.

Rams vs. 49ers score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, analysis for Week 8 NFC West showdown

We’ve got a marquee matchup between bitter division rivals underway in Los Angeles. In an entertaining first half, the Rams took a 14-10 halftime lead over the visiting 49ers.

The Rams struck first when Matthew Stafford’s 1-yard touchdown run capped off a 17-play drive that took over nine minutes off the clock. San Francisco countered moments later when Christian McCaffrey threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk. McCaffrey 12 total touches in the first half, two more touches than he had last week in his 49ers debut.

Los Angeles regained the lead minutes later when Stafford hit Cooper Kupp for a 17-yard score. The 49ers responded with a 29-yard field goal by Robbie Gould after the Rams defense stiffened in the red zone.

Stafford is exactly halfway toward a 300-yard game, while Kupp caught 7 of 9 targets for 72 yards in the first half. All but 15 of the Rams’ 165 first-half yards were through the air, as Los Angeles averaged just 1.5 yards per carry against the 49ers’ stout defensive front.

Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, Rams’ Aaron Donald leaving Donda Sports

Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald both announced Tuesday night that they are leaving Donda Sports, the agency founded by the artist formerly known as Kanye West, due to antisemitic comments he recently made.

The announcements came hours after Adidas terminated its relationship with the rapper, who now is known as Ye.

Brown’s decision came one day after he told The Boston Globe he would remain with Donda Sports despite the fact he didn’t condone Ye’s remarks.

“In the past 24 hours, I’ve been able to reflect and better understand how my previous statements lack clarity in expressing my stance against recent insensitive public remarks and actions,” Brown said Tuesday in a statement he released via Twitter. “For that, I apologize. And in this, I seek to be as clear as possible. I have always, and will always, continue to stand strongly against any antisemitism, hate speech, misrepresentation, and oppressive rhetoric of any kind.

“In light of that, after sharing in conversations, I now recognize that there are times when my voice and my position can’t coexist in spaces that don’t correspond with my stance or my values. And, for that reason, I am terminating my association with Donda Sports.”

Donald announced around the same time that his family would leave Donda Sports, saying that Ye’s remarks “are the exact opposite of how we choose to live our lives and raise our children.”

“As parents and members of society, we felt a responsibility to send a clear message that hateful words and actions have consequences and that we must do better as human beings,” Donald wrote in his statement via Twitter. “We do not feel our beliefs, voices and actions belong anywhere near a space that misrepresents and oppresses people of any background, ethnicity or race. We’ve had the pleasure of working with many incredible people along the way and hope to continue to use our platform to uplift and support other families, children and communities through positive outreach.”

Brown and Donald signed with Donda Sports in May.

Earlier Tuesday, Adidas announced it would be formally cutting ties with Ye, who had developed a hugely lucrative clothing and apparel partnership with the company.

“Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech,” the company said in a statement Tuesday. “Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.”

As part of its statement, Adidas said it would lose roughly $250 million this year in net income as a result of breaking away from its partnership with Ye, but that doing so was necessary in the wake of antisemitic comments he has made in recent weeks.

Ye has made controversial remarks in the past on a variety of issues, including slavery and COVID-19 vaccines. Earlier this month, Ye posted on Twitter that he would soon go “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE,” an apparent reference to the U.S. defense readiness condition scale known as DEFCON. He was suspended from both Twitter and Instagram.

His recent string of antisemitic comments has caused several companies to break ties with the rapper or his various business lines. Creative Artists Agency, Balenciaga, Gap and Foot Locker are among others that have ended their partnerships with him.

Rams expected to field trade calls for RB Cam Akers

If the situation continues as it has so far this season, Rams former starting running back Cam Akers has played his last down with the team.

Sources say Akers, who is out today due to what was described as personal reasons, has philosophical and football-related differences with head coach Sean McVay. The coach has left Akers’ future open, and sources say the third-year pro could be on the way out.

The belief is that he’ll draw significant trade interest, and the team is open to a deal for the right value.

The Super Bowl champs will make Akers inactive for Sunday’s game against the Panthers, with McVay, when pressed, saying Friday, “I would say it’s more like we’re dealing with things internally. This is kind of unchartered territory and I think the biggest thing is, out of respect for the situation, we want to keep it internally.”

McVay added, “He’s going to be OK.”

The Rams will utilize running backs Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson today, along with recently elevated undrafted rookie Ronnie Rivers, who has impressed and should get carries.

Akers emerged as the Rams’ go-to runner as a rookie during the 2020 season, averaging 4.3 yards per rush and setting himself up for a monster 2021.

But Akers tore his Achilles before the season, setting up a miraculous recovery that saw him play late in the season and into the Super Bowl. Talent-wise, there is no question with Akers. His athleticism numbers are better now than before his Achilles injury, sources say. Two fumbles against the Bucs in the playoffs last season took his situation downward and frustration from all parties was the result.

Sources say the communication between Akers and McVay has remained cordial, and Akers has caused no problems inside the locker room. But questions about his role, where he belongs and his place in the pecking order of running backs have persisted.

That brought everyone to this week with Akers set to inactive. There is always a chance, a source cautions, that Akers snaps back in and he figures it out with McVay.

But absent that sort of dramatic turn, Akers could be headed elsewhere.

With Cam Akers apparently on the outs, the Rams don’t rule out adding a running back

Getty Images

Well, it looks as if No. 3 will be available for Odell Beckham, Jr., if he re-signs with the Rams.

The team’s decision to rule running back Cam Akers out for “personal reasons” this weekend, coupled with comments made by coach Sean McVay regarding the situation, creates the clear impression that Akers’s time with the team is coming to an end.

“We’re working through some different things right now,” McVay told reporters regarding the third-year tailback. “Like I said, just want to kind of want to be able to . . . hopefully you guys understand and respect that we want to just be able to keep things internal right now.”

They want to keep things internal, because they apparently are figuring out what to do about Akers. Ideally, they’d like to trade him. If it’s obvious they’re moving on, it becomes harder to get maximum value.

“It’s one of those deals where, like I said, kind of want to be able to just keep things internally, but as it relates to just the football stuff, it is certainly not all on our running backs,” McVay said when asked about a need for urgency has led to Akers being ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Panthers. “We’ve got to be better, starting with myself being able to execute the fundamentals of the techniques, being able to get a hat on a hat, being able to press the line of scrimmage. The run game truly does take all 11, but there’s a lot of layers to it and that’s kind of where we’re at with it.”

It’s clear there’s an issue, because McVay explained that he hasn’t had many issues like this during his time with the Rams.

“What I’ve been very fortunate with, going into the sixth year, I think you realize how blessed and fortunate you’ve been where those things have been at a minimum,” McVay said. “But that is what you sign up for. You’ve got to be able to deal with it the best way that you know how, leaning on the resources, asking the right questions, being willing to listen then learn and then you can lead and make decisions the right way. Never are they always easy, but I’m always going to try to do what I think is best. There’s a lot of instances where you’re saying, ‘I haven’t really been here, who can I lean on to help provide some perspective and some context?’ That’s what you try to do in any of these types of situations. But I do know that dealing with things clear, open, and honest, and in the best way that you think, based on those values foundationally that kind of guide our everyday approach and behavior have helped. Is it perfect? I will never claim to be that, but I always do try to learn from the mistakes and make sure that you use both the good and the bad to make sure that you’re doing what’s best for everybody that you’re responsible for as it relates to the decision making and some of those different things.”

So will the Rams be in the market for another running back?

“I don’t know,” McVay said. “I wouldn’t say no ever. We’ll always explore options if we feel like there’s chances to upgrade, that’s probably not something that’s at the forefront. What I am excited about seeing is let’s see if we can go find a way to play some good football against what we know is going to be an incredibly tough opponent, see if we can get to 3-3, and then be able to take a step back and do a lot of things that give us a chance to really exhale, but also address who we’re getting back, what does that look like as it relates to trying to have the best plan for the remainder of the season that we’re guaranteed. Those are things that you want to just take it a step at a time, and that’s where my mindset is right now.”

McVay was pressed a bit on the “personal reasons” that have Akers not available.

“I would say it’s more like we’re dealing with things internally,” McVay said. “I don’t know exactly . . . this is kind of unchartered territory and I think the biggest thing is, out of respect for the situation, we want to keep it internally. You guys will have more information later on, but as it relates to everything right now, that’s how we’re articulating it. He’s going to be OK.”

He’s going to be OK. But it sounds as if he’s not going to be a Ram.

Akers, 23, was a second-round pick from Florida State in 2020. A strong finish to his rookie season, including 171 yards in a Thursday night thrashing of the Patriots, created expectations that he’d have a breakout year in 2021. A ruptured Achilles tendon suffered before training camp kept that from happening. He returned for the tail end of the regular season and the postseason.

This year, Akers has failed to live up to expectations. He had 61 rushing yards in a Week Three win over the Cardinals. He has 90 total rushing yards in the team’s four other games, combined.

Akers has a base salary of $1.17 million this year, and $1.45 million in 2023. It’s unclear whether a team would be willing to trade for his contract, given the overall questions about his performance this season.

Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown are the only other running backs on the active roster. Ronnie Rivers is on the team’s practice squad.

Rams, Cam Akers ‘working through’ things; RB out vs. Panthers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers will not play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers after missing practice the past two days for what was listed as personal reasons, coach Sean McVay said Friday.

McVay declined to go into details about why Akers would not play, saying the Rams are “working through some different things with Cam.” Asked whether he expects Akers to be a part of the team going forward, McVay reiterated, “We’re working through some different things right now.”

After the Rams’ season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills, McVay told reporters that he had a conversation with Akers about needing to play with more urgency, noting the reason the pair had that discussion is “a result of my confidence in him and the expectations we have and what we need him to be, which isn’t anything more than what he’s capable of.” Akers later said that conversation occurred during training camp.

Akers has 151 rushing yards and a touchdown on 51 carries this season. After he scored a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 — his first since the 2020 season — he said he was motivated because “everybody else felt like I lost a step or whatever, but I didn’t.”

McVay said Friday that Akers is physically OK. He reiterated that the Rams are “dealing with things internally.”

“[This is] kind of uncharted territory, and I think the biggest thing is, out of respect for the situation, want to keep it internal,” McVay said.

In Akers’ absence, McVay said the Rams plan to lean on running backs Darrell Henderson Jr., Malcolm Brown and Ronnie Rivers, who is on the practice squad. Asked whether he expects the Rams to add a running back, McVay said, “I don’t know. I wouldn’t say no, ever.”

“We’ll always explore options if we feel like there’s chances to upgrade,” McVay added. “That’s probably not something that’s at the forefront.”

Rams haven’t made last offer to Odell Beckham Jr.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — After wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. tweeted Wednesday that the contract offer the Los Angeles Rams made to him wasn’t reflective of his worth, coach Sean McVay indicated he didn’t think that would be the team’s final offer.

“LA knows where I wanted to be,” Beckham tweeted. “… but they didn’t offer me…. ANYthing! So idk what people want me to do, I def kno my worth and what the offer was isn’t reflective of that. So it’s tough to say that I can come on back even tho I thought I finally found that home !”

Beckham signed with the Rams in November after he was released by the Cleveland Browns. During the postseason, Beckham had 21 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns before tearing his left ACL during Super Bowl LVI.

“I love Odell,” McVay said. “We have constant dialogue. He also knows that certainly I don’t think that’s the last [offer] that would come from us. I’m not familiar with what it is. He knows how we feel about him. We’ve got a little bit of time.

“But [I] love Odell. Nothing but good things coming from me.”

The Rams still have a nameplate in the locker room of their practice facility for Beckham. The Rams have not been quiet about their desire for Beckham’s return. In September, during a news conference, cornerback Jalen Ramsey brought up the receiver in one of his answers and then paused to say, “Odell, come back.”

No good!

Oh, Kyler Murray. First, he slid before the first down, bringing up third down instead of moving the chains. Then, with 22 seconds left and no timeouts, Murray spiked the ball. Now the Cardinals had to kick a field goal, and their kicker, journeyman Matt Ammendola (already on his third team this year), was missing wide right in warmups. Unsurprisingly, Ammendola missed wide right again, ensuring the NFL’s lone undefeated team (the Eagles) would remain flawless for another week.

Micah. Parsons.

It was only fitting that Micah Parsons put the finishing touches on the Cowboys fourth straight win. With the Rams, down 22-10, trying to make things interesting with a late touchdown, Parsons got underneath the pads of right tackle Rob Havenstein and blasted Matthew Stafford, knocking the ball loose. Cowboys ball. Game over.

Parsons’ final stat line: five tackles (one for a loss), nine QB pressures, three QB hits, two sacks and a forced fumble. Game-wrecker.

Cardinals pull even

James Conner injured his ribs, Darrel Williams hurt his knee, and Jonathan Ward was ruled out with a hamstring injury. All that leaves at running back is Eno Benjamin, and when the Cardinals needed a big play, he came through. With his 11-yard scamper, Arizona tied things up with Philadelphia.

Two fake punts!

How did we get so lucky? Within minutes of each other, we got fake punts from both the Rams and Cardinals. Los Angeles’ fake was definitely cooler because it involved punter Riley Dixon throwing a pass, but Arizona’s proved to be more valuable, as the Cardinals ended up getting a field goal right before the half to pull within four points.

Hollywood highlight

Go off, Marquise Brown! This is why the Cardinals traded a first-round pick for the young wideout. He can turn a routine play into a touchdown, just like he did here. Two Eagles should have tackled him around the 18-yard line for a modest gain. Instead, he shaked and baked the Philadelphia defense en route to a 25-yard score.

Pick-six!

The 49ers are the NFL’s best defense, and nothing that has happened against the Panthers suggests otherwise. In fact, San Francisco secured a pick-six for the second straight game.

Pollard > Zeke?

Another game, another run that supports the notion that Tony Pollard should touch the ball more than Ezekiel Elliott. On his 57-yard touchdown, he exploded like a missile up the middle, stepped out of two tackles and then weaved his way into the end zone. As for proof of Pollard’s long-term effectiveness: per Next Gen Stats, Pollard has rush yards over expectation per carry of +2.6. Elliott, meanwhile, is at -0.5.

Kupp turns on the JETS

Cooper Kupp continues to amaze. On his latest highlight, he makes this one-handed catch look way too easy and then flies away from everyone for the 75-yard touchdown.

Still no first-quarter points for Cards

Inexplicably, the Cardinals still haven’t scored in the first quarter this season. Five games, zero points over the opening 15 minutes. The fact that they entered Sunday 2-2 is pretty remarkable.

Dazzling first career catch

Injuries have plagued Tutu Atwell since joining the Rams as a second-round pick in 2021, but he’s a big-play threat who showed as much in the first quarter Sunday. The Rams needed someone to make a play, and the 5-foot-9 speedster delivered by hauling in Matthew Stafford’s perfectly thrown ball for a 54-yard pickup.

RB Mosses CB

Tevin Coleman is only 6-foot-1, but he played like he was 6-foot-5 in leaping over Myles Hartsfield for a 30-yard catch.

Scoop & score

Demarcus Lawrence didn’t wait for the offense to take the field to try and score the first points of the game. Instead, Lawrence picked up the ball after a strip sack from Dorance Armstrong Jr. and took it 19 yards to the house fewer than two minutes into the game.

Taysom Hill is ELECTRIC

The Saints got a much-needed victory over the Seahawks on Sunday, thanks almost entirely to Taysom Hill. He scored not one, not two, not three, but FOUR touchdowns as New Orleans outlasted Seattle in a 39-32 thriller. His final stat line: nine carries for 112 yards and three scores on the ground to go along with a 22-yard touchdown pass. If New Orleans hopes to contend for a playoff spot this season, it’ll need to lean more on Hill like it did Sunday.

Back-breaking INT

The Commanders are now 1-4 after Carson Wentz threw an awful interception at the goal line as they tried to go for the win late in the fourth. It marked his sixth interception in five games. Meanwhile, the Titans are on top of the AFC South after their third straight victory.

Another rookie RB TD

We’ve had rookies James Cook and Dameon Pierce score touchdowns today, and now Kenneth Walker III is on that list. Taking on a bigger load for the injured Rashaad Penny, the second-rounder burst through the middle and scampered untouched for the 69-yard touchdown.

Game-winning FG no good

Brandon Staley nearly gave the Browns the win after his Chargers’ fourth-down attempt failed in their own territory. However, the defense stepped up, and rookie Cade York’s 53-yard field goal attempt went wide right. Los Angeles moves to 3-2.

Another red-zone INT

Jacoby Brissett has been competent for the Browns through the first three quarters of games this season. But during the final frame, and more specifically with the game on the line, the Deshaun Watson fill-in has faltered badly. Just an ugly, ugly interception with a chance for Cleveland to take the lead with under three minutes left.

Geno AGAIN

Shockingly, the Seahawks have been one of the most fun offenses to watch so far this season. It’s basically just Geno Smith throwing deep to DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, and it’s been glorious. Smith just delivered another pristine touchdown pass to Lockett, this time for 40 yards.

This is the Taysom Hill we know and love. Not only has he rushed seven times for 51 yards, but his lone completion resulted in a 22-yard score for Adam Trautman.

Browns-Chargers in a shootout

Last season’s meeting between the Browns and Chargers resulted in 89 points — a 47-42 Los Angeles victory. We’ve got another shootout Sunday, as the teams have combined for 55 points entering the fourth quarter. The most recent score came courtesy of Kareem Hunt, whose two-yard score gave Cleveland back the lead.

Dyami x2

Who’s Dyami, you ask? It’s the Commanders wideout Dyami Brown, a third-round pick out of North Carolina in 2021. It’s understandable if you don’t know him, because in his first 19 career games, he made just 13 catches for 171 yards and zero touchdowns. He’s already got 105 yards receiving Sunday and his first two career touchdowns, including this beautiful one-handed snag.

Zappe delivers

It’s been all Patriots in New England on Sunday. And while rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe hasn’t carried the offense, he’s been more than competent filling in for Mac Jones. Zappe has completed 16 of his 19 passes for 165 yards, one interception and this on-target touchdown to Jakobi Meyers to extend the advantage.

First-career TD

Shouts to the Bears’ Velus Jones Jr., who scored his first career TD on a dump-off jet sweep to pull the Bears within one score.

First-career INT

Oh no, Trevor Lawrence. Trying to force a pass into the end zone on second-and-1 from the seven-yard line, Lawrence threw it right to Derek Stingley Jr., the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft. Big mistake from Lawrence keeps the game all tied up.

Lockett quiets the crowd

The Saints looked poised to enter halftime with the lead. Then Alvin Kamara fumbled and Geno Smith did what he’s been doing all year, slinging the ball into a tight window to Tyler Lockett for the 35-yard touchdown in the final seconds.

Josh Allen is INSANE

It’s as if Josh Allen is playing Madden on easy sometimes. Against a Steelers defense that entered the contest allowing 251.5 passing yards per game, he has 348 yards and four touchdowns … IN TWO QUARTERS. Even crazier is that Allen has only completed 14 passes. That’s 24.9 yards per completion, which is just off the charts explosive.

10-for-138

That was Justin Jefferson’s stat line in the first half. Ten receptions (on 10 targets) for 138 yards. One of, if not the best wide receiver in football is showing out against the Bears.

Catch of the day?

Of course anything is possible, but I don’t think we’ll see a better catch today than the one Darnell Mooney made against the Vikings. What a beauty!

Gabe Davis have a day!

An ankle injury slowed Gabe Davis through the first month of the season. He missed Week 2, and in the games he did play he only managed eight receptions for 138 yards. Well, he certainly looks healthy against the Steelers, as he’s racked up 160 yards … IN THE FIRST HALF. He already has touchdowns of 98 and 62 yards for an average of 80 yards per catch. That’s ridiculous.

Cousins on FIRE

Kirk Cousins in prime time? No thank you. Kirk Cousins overseas? Not ideal. But Kirk Cousins at 1 p.m. ET? That’s where the Vikings quarterback shines, and he’s been flawless so far against the Bears. He’s completed 17 straight passes to start the game, which is a franchise record. Those completions have resulted in 176 yards and a touchdown as Minnesota is in complete control.

Wentz bomb

The Commanders offense has been inept the past two weeks. Carson Wentz is attempting to change that in Week 5, and he looked to second-year wideout Dyami Brown to do so. With Brown in one-on-one coverage, Wentz launched a perfect deep ball that his wideout caught in stride, which he took 75 yards for the score.

Rookie RB breaks free

Second-round rookie Breece Hall has improved every week for the Jets, and he’s already made a huge play in the first half against the Dolphins. No one picked up Hall out of the backfield, leading to an easy pitch and catch that went for 79 yards down to the Miami 1-yard line. Michael Carter then found the end zone to put New York up double digits.

Ekeler off to the races

Badly in need of a spark, the Chargers got one from Austin Ekeler, who made one cut and was off to the races for a 71-yard gain. Credit to Greg Newsome II, though. He tracked down Ekeler before he crossed the goal line, which ended up saving four points since Los Angeles had to settle for a field goal.

Geno still cookin’

Geno Smith has been one of the NFL’s best stories through four weeks, and he’s off to another great start against the Saints. Two passes, two completions, 65 yards, and this 50-yard strike to DK Metcalf strike on the run to put the Seahawks ahead.

SAFETY!

The No. 4 overall pick isn’t just a lockdown cover cornerback. Sauce Gardner can make plays in the backfield, too, and Teddy Bridgewater learned the hard way on his first snap of the game. Coming on a corner blitz, Gardner blew up Bridgewater to force intentional grounding in the end zone. That’s a safety! 2-0 Jets.

Chubb can’t be stopped

Nick Chubb may be the best pure running back in the NFL, so the Chargers might want to wrap up the Browns’ three-time Pro Bowler. It didn’t happen on this play, as Chubb stepped out of one tackle, avoided another and bounced off a third before rumbling down the right sideline for the 41-yard touchdown.

98 yards!

A potentially disastrous start turned into the perfect one for the Bills. After Taiwan Jones muffed the opening kickoff, backing up Buffalo on its own two-yard line, Josh Allen more than made up for it by unloading a dart that floated over the heads of two Steelers defenders and into the hands of Gabe Davis. The explosive wideout took it the rest of the way for a 98-YARD touchdown on the opening drive.

Barkley fights back

After missing some time with a shoulder injury, Giants running back Saquon Barkley came back in a big way during the second half of Sunday’s game against the Packers. Barkley’s 41-yard catch and carry set up his go-ahead touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

Giants ‘trick or treat’ for TD

Daniel Bellinger’s touchdown run was certainly a treat for Giants fans, as the tight end’s score cut New York’s deficit to 17-10 in the second quarter. The score was the result of some trickery from Brian Daboll’s offense, as Bellinger’s score came off a reserve play following a 40-yard run by Barkley.

Tight end Marcedes Lewis got into the end zone for his first touchdown since the 2020 season as Green Bay added a second first-half touchdown in London Sunday. Lewis’ score gave the Packers a 17-3 lead over the Giants in a matchup between two 3-1 teams.

Rain nowhere in sight for Week 5

If you’re in any sort of fantasy league, it’s always worth checking the weather. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Last week, the remnants of Hurricane Ian brought heavy rain for the Jaguars-Eagles matchup in Philadelphia and the Bills-Ravens showdown in Baltimore. Rain is usually a bad thing for fantasy, and it’s especially bad for kickers. Yet when the 1 p.m. games kicked off last weekend, the Eagles’ Jake Elliott was in my starting lineup. Unsurprisingly, he flopped.

For those worried about inclement weather for Week 5, whether for fantasy purposes or otherwise, don’t be. As of Friday afternoon, at least according to Rotowire’s weather report, nine of the 15 games set for Sunday and Monday are expecting clear skies, three are expecting partly cloudy skies and three are being played in domes, where you’d expect optimal conditions. Of all the contests, only one has any chance of rain at kickoff. That’s the Texans against the Jaguars in Jacksonvillle…with a 2% chance of precipitation. Don’t expect wind to be much of a factor, either, per RotoGrinders Chief Meteorologist Kevin Roth.

What I’m really trying to say is that if your favorite team (or fantasy team) loses in Week 5, there’s no one to blame but those on the field (or in your lineup).

Cowboys at Rams score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, streaming for Week 5 NFC showdown

The Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams are in the midst of an NFC showdown, and it’s the Cowboys that won the first two quarters. Dallas defensive lineman Dorance Armstrong recorded a strip-sack and blocked a punt on back-to-back possessions to start the game, which directly led to the first nine points scored in the contest. The Rams weren’t too rattled, however, as Matthew Stafford hit Cooper Kupp on a 75-yard touchdown in the second quarter to keep things close.

The Rams are 3-1 vs. the Cowboys since Sean McVay took over, but these teams are trending in two different directions this season. The Cowboys have won three straight with Cooper Rush at the helm in place of the injured Dak Prescott, while the Rams are 2-2 — which is the worst record by a defending champ through four games since the 2018 Philadelphia Eagles.

Will the Cowboys continue to build on their unexpected success, or will the Rams assert their dominance and rebound after an embarrassing loss to the San Francisco 49ers? Follow along in the live blog below, as we break down this matchup as it happens.
