Kylie Jenner pulls out all the stops for daughter Stormi’s fifth birthday party

Kylie Jenner went all out to ensure her daughter Stormi Webster had the best birthday, as she turned five on Wednesday.

The lipkit mogul, 25, welcomed Stormi’s friends to the bash with a giant inflatable grey ‘Astroworld’ tunnel of her daughter’s head, through which guests would enter the party.

The entrance was inspired by Stormi’s dad Travis Scott’s ‘Astroworld’ cover art, and she previously used a similar inflatable head when Stormi turned two. Jenner shares two kids with the rapper, 30, from whom she recently split.

Aside from Stormi they also have an 11 month old son whose name is Aire, and whose birthday falls the day after his sister’s.

The social media sensation also invested in an endless sea of pink balloons that formed an arch on the other side of the tunnel.

ChatGPT AI Threat Pulls Google Co-Founders Back Into Action, Report Says

ChatGPT, the high-profile AI chatbot from OpenAI, is such a serious threat to Google’s core business that the company’s co-founders are reengaged with the search giant, The New York Times reported Friday.

Startup OpenAI debuted ChatGPT in November, and within a few days more than a million people had begun prompting it with an enormous range of questions and requests. The artificial intelligence system has been trained on vast quantities of text on the internet and can answer questions, compose essays, write computer programs and generate all kinds of information.

ChatGPT can sound authoritative, but it isn’t always right, and you can’t tell where it’s drawing its answers from. It’s impressive enough to be a viral hit on the internet, though, and it’s useful enough that Google reportedly declared a “code red” response to ChatGPT.

Now, at the behest of Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google parent company Alphabet, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are looking into the issue, the Times reported. They’d largely stepped out of day-to-day operating roles in 2019.

Google has a rival AI technology called PaLM, but it hasn’t made that AI system available for public use. And it’s an AI pioneer, inventing the “transformer” technology that’s at the heart of large language models like PaLM and OpenAI’s ChatGPT foundation, GPT-3. In a blog post this week the company summarized several areas where Google is using AI, for everything from suggesting email replies to placing ads.

Google didn’t comment on the co-founders’ moves or its stance on ChatGPT. But spokesperson Lily Lin said ensuring AI is used safely is important to the company.

“We believe that AI is foundational and transformative technology that is incredibly useful for individuals, businesses and communities, and as our AI Principles outline, we need to consider the broader societal impacts these innovations can have,” Lin said. “We continue to test our AI technology internally to make sure it’s helpful and safe, and we look forward to sharing more experiences externally soon.”

Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster sees ChatGPT, GPT-3 and large language models as a competitive threat to Google.

“One possible future is that these LLMs could be built into the backend of many of the tech services we use,” Munster said in a Friday report. “This is the outcome that could hurt Google in the long-term.”

Ultimately, though, Google should be able to withstand the threat, he predicted. With four services that each have more than a billion users, and $60 billion in annual operating income from search, Google has “more than enough money to fund investments that will yield a ChatGPT competitor.”

SpaceX Pulls off Record 3 Orbital Launches in 34 Hours

SpaceX is finishing off the year strong, flying its Falcon 9 rocket three times in less than 34 hours to deliver various payloads to low Earth orbit.

So far this year, the company has successfully completed 59 orbital launches. SpaceX still has two more launches scheduled before the end of the year, which would fulfill CEO Elon Musk’s goal of 60 launches for 2022. In June, SpaceX performed three Falcon 9 launches in 36 hours and 18 minutes, but these most recent launches happened in a span of 33 hours and 46 minutes, setting a new record for the company, as Teslarati points out.

For the first of its recent three launches, a Falcon 9 carried the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission to orbit. The rocket took off from Space Launch Complex-4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on December 16 at 6:46 a.m. ET. SWOT deployed as planned, beginning its three-year mission as the first satellite to conduct a global survey of Earth’s surface water to measure how it changes over time.

A little over 11 hours later, another Falcon 9 rocket took flight, departing Florida at 5:48 p.m ET. Friday’s second launch carried two communications satellites, the Boeing-built O3b mPower 1 and 2, to orbit for Luxembourg satellite operator SES.

The third launch was a little closer to home for SpaceX, with the reusable rocket delivering more of the private company’s Starlink satellites to orbit. On December 17, a Falcon 9 launched at 4:32 p.m. ET with 54 satellites tucked into its payload fairing. So far, SpaceX has launched over 3,600 of its internet satellites to orbit, of which 3,284 are currently operational, according to stats collected by astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell. The use of its workhorse Falcon 9 has put the company way ahead of its competition, such as OneWeb, when it comes to building a megaconstellation of internet satellites in low Earth orbit.

SpaceX has two more launches scheduled this year. Multiple reports suggest that the company is planning on launching Falcon 9 on December 28 to deliver more Starlink satellites to orbit, according to Teslarati. There may even be a bonus launch on December 29, with the trusty launch vehicle carrying the Israeli EROS-C3 Earth imaging satellite.

SpaceX CEO Musk had previously stated that he’s aiming for a record-breaking 60 launches of the Falcon 9 rocket this year, so we’ll have to wait and see if the company manages to pull it off. SpaceX may very well succeed in its goal for 2022, but a big challenge awaits next year, with the CEO setting his sights on 100 launches in 2023.

ABC Pulls Backstreet Boys Holiday Special After Nick Carter Rape Suit

“A Very Backstreet Holiday,” the Backstreet Boys’ Christmas special filmed this month in Los Angeles, will no longer air on ABC, Variety has confirmed. The news comes amid allegations that singer Nick Carter raped a 17-year-old girl during the band’s 2001 tour.

The special was set to air on ABC on Dec. 14, featuring Carter, AJ McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell and Howie Dorough as they celebrate the season and perform hits from their 10th album “A Very Backstreet Christmas.” Seth Rogen, Meghan Trainor, Rob Riggle, Nikki Glaser, Ron Funches and Atsuko Okatsuka were scheduled to appear.

On Thursday, a 39-year-old woman, Shannon “Shay” Ruth, filed a sexual battery lawsuit accusing the singer of raping her and infecting her with HPV when she was 17. She alleged the assault took place in February 2001 following a Backstreet Boys concert in Tacoma, Wash. Ruth, who identified herself as autistic and living with cerebral palsy, detailed the alleged assault along with her attorneys during a press conference held at Los Angeles’ Beverly Hilton hotel.

During the press conference and in the lawsuit, she claimed that Carter, 21 at the time, forced himself on her as she “begged him to stop,” and later allegedly told her that she was a “retarded little bitch” who no one would believe if she spoke up.

Carter has denied the allegations.

“This claim about an incident that supposedly took place more than 20 years ago is not only legally meritless but also entirely untrue,” Carter’s attorney, Michael Holtz, said in a statement to Variety. “Unfortunately, for several years now, Ms. Ruth has been manipulated into making false allegations about Nick – and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time. No one should be fooled by a press stunt orchestrated by an opportunistic lawyer – there is nothing to this claim whatsoever, which we have no doubt the courts will quickly realize.”

ABC News pulls hosts TJ Holmes and Amy Robach off air after romance revealed | US television industry

Two TV anchors working for ABC News in the US have been pulled from air after their workplace romance came to light, amid a storm of public gossip and tabloid coverage.

TJ Holmes and Amy Robach, who have worked as hosts on Good Morning America spinoff talkshow GMA3 since 2020, were revealed to be in a relationship last week after paparazzi photos of the pair were published online. Both Holmes and Robach are married, but after the photos were published a representative for the pair said they had both separated from their spouses and the relationship only began recently.

During an editorial call on Monday, Kim Godwin, the president of ABC News, announced that Holmes and Robach would temporarily be pulled from GMA3.

“I’m going to talk about something that has become an internal and an external distraction: the relationship between two of our colleagues,” Godwin said, according to sources on the call. “And so, I want to say that while that relationship is not a violation of company policy, I have really taken the last few days to think about and work through what I think is best for the ABC News organisation. And so, for now, I am going to take Amy and TJ off the air, while we figure this out.

“These decisions are not easy, they are not knee-jerk, but they are necessary for the brand and for our priority which, you guys know, are all of us — the people here at ABC,” she added, asking staff to “stop the whispering in the hallways” about the relationship.

“We can’t operate with gossip, and speculation and rumours,” she said. “We need to stay focused on the work.”

Holmes and Robach’s relationship was revealed after paparazzi shots of the pair together on vacation were published online.

Amid a storm of tabloid coverage and social media furore, a representative for Holmes and Robach said: “They had been close friends for many years, but this relationship started over the past few months, after they separated from their respective spouses in August. They had not told anyone, even at ABC, because they were waiting until they both were divorced.”

Holmes and Robach hosted two episodes of GMA3 after their relationship came to light.

“It’s too bad it’s Friday. It’s been a great week. I just want this one to keep going and going and going. Just enjoying it … Take it all in,” Holmes said on-air on Friday.

“Speak for yourself,” Robach replied.

On Monday, the two were replaced by Stephanie Ramos and Gio Benitez, who will continue to fill in for the pair while ABC News settles the matter.

Tampa police chief pulls out badge, asks deputy to ‘let us go’ during traffic stop

Tampa police Chief Mary O’Connor identified herself as chief, pulled out her badge and asked a Pinellas sheriff’s deputy to “just let us go” after she and her husband were pulled over in a golf cart last month, a video shared by the Tampa Police Department on Thursday showed.

In the video, which was recorded by the deputy’s body camera during the Nov. 12 traffic stop in Oldsmar, the deputy immediately lets them go as they exchange pleasantries.

He asks if they live in East Lake Woodlands and the couple confirms they do.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Deputy Jacoby,” he says.

He and O’Connor shake hands as she responds, “Same here, my friend. Take care of yourself. Sorry to bother you.”

“No worries,” the deputy replies before adding, “We have a lot of problems with the golf carting around here.”

The couple tells him they don’t usually come out, but they went to a Greek restaurant to get some takeout food.

She then hands over what appears to be her business card, telling the deputy, “You ever need anything, call me.”

O’Connor’s husband, Keith, was not cited for not having a tag on the golf cart while he was driving on a public road.

The incident was first reported by Creative Loafing Tampa Bay.

O’Connor could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

A news release from the Police Department includes a statement from O’Connor in which she says she has apologized to Mayor Jane Castor and wants to apologize to residents.

“In hindsight, I realize how my handling of this matter could be viewed as inappropriate, but that was certainly not my intent,” O’Connor said. “I knew my conversation was on video, and my motive was not to put the deputy in an uncomfortable position. I have personally called the Pinellas County Sheriff offering to pay for any potential citation.”

Castor also could not be reached for comment Thursday, but the news release included a statement from her in which she said: “We hold everyone accountable, no matter their position, and this behavior was unacceptable. Chief O’Connor will go through the due process and face appropriate discipline.”

According to the release, O’Connor has contacted the Tampa Police Professional Standards Bureau “asking to receive the same discipline that any officer would receive for similar conduct.”

The Police Department said an internal review currently is being conducted.

The Pinellas deputy is not under review for the incident, according to Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Amanda Sinni.

O’Connor’s behavior — and subsequent arrest — during another traffic stop some three decades ago while she was a rookie Tampa officer was among the issues that mired her appointment as chief in controversy.

In 1995, O’Connor was with her then-boyfriend Keith O’Connor, also a Tampa police officer, when they were pulled over by a Hillsborough sheriff’s deputy. Mary O’Connor, known then as Mary Minter, repeatedly disrupted deputies who were trying to give Keith O’Connor a sobriety test, and she was asked to sit in a patrol car to calm down, according to published reports and personnel records.

She kicked the windows and struck a deputy on the shoulder and chest with her fist. Deputies arrested Keith O’Connor on a drunken driving charge and Minter on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction and disorderly intoxication. She pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of battery and obstruction. A judge withheld adjudication.

Both officers were suspended and then fired, but later reinstated. Both worked their way up to the top ranks of the department. Keith O’Connor retired in 2019 as an assistant chief and is now the city’s neighborhood enhancement manager.

O’Connor has said she was an immature person who made a terrible decision and then made the most of her second chance at a law enforcement career. She said the experience gave her valuable perspective that helped her as a cop and would help her as the department’s leader.

Tampa City Council member Bill Carlson told the Tampa Bay Times in a text, ”This proves that (council member Orlando) Gudes and I were correct in challenging this appointment and that Castor should have listened to the public feedback rather than bullying and attacking Council related to this vote.”

Gudes declined to comment until he’d read the story.

Randy Nelson, a policing expert and professor at Bethune-Cookman University, reviewed the footage posted to the Tampa Police Department’s YouTube channel at the request of the Times. He said it’s particularly important for law enforcement officers to show leadership, given the current political climate and waning trust in police.

”Integrity matters,” he said. “The public should feel that whether you stop me or you stop someone that’s a politician, that they’ll be treated the same.”

Times staff writers Chris Tisch, Tony Marrero, Natalie Weber, Charlie Frago and Matt Cohen contributed to this report.

FDA pulls antibody bebtelovimab because not effective against omicron BQ.1

CNBC Health & Science

Mike Segar | Reuters

A key monoclonal antibody used to treat people with weak immune systems who catch Covid is no longer authorized for use in the U.S. because it is not effective against emerging omicron subvariants.

The FDA, in a notice Wednesday, said bebtelovimab is not approved for use because it is not expected to neutralize the omicron BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 subvariants. They are causing 57% of new infections nationally and make up a majority of cases in every U.S. region except one.

The Health and Human Services Department is putting on hold pending requests for bebtelovimab, and the manufacturer Eli Lilliy has also halted commercial distribution of the antibody treatment until further notice, according to the FDA notice.

But bebtelovimab stocks should be kept on hand in the event that Covid variants which the antibody can neutralize become dominant again in the future, according to FDA.

Bebtelovimab is a single-dose injection administered to people who catch Covid and are at high risk of developing severe disease, but cannot take any other FDA-approved treatments such as the oral antiviral Paxlovid. Many people with weak immune systems, such as organ transplant patients, cannot take Paxlovid with other medications they need.

CNBC Health & Science

Read CNBC’s latest global health coverage:

U.S. health officials have warned that people with weak immune systems face a heightened risk from Covid this winter, because more immune evasive omicron subvariants threaten to knock out antibody treatments they rely on to stay safe from Covid.

Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House Covid coordinator, said in October that the failure of Congress to pass additional Covid funding means treatments will dwindle as new variants render them ineffective.

“We had hoped that over time as the pandemic went along, as our fight against this virus went along, we would be expanding our medicine cabinet,” Jha told reporters. “Because of lack of congressional funding that medicine cabinet has actually shrunk and that does put vulnerable people at risk.”

President Joe Biden has called on people with weak immune systems to consult with their physicians about what extra precautions they should take this winter to stay safe.
