Bitcoin pulls back from brink of $50,000

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Bitcoin pulled back from a record high on Monday and other cryptocurrencies slipped, as investors took profits from a record-breaking rally that had pushed bitcoin close to $50,000.

Bitcoin fell as much as 5.6% to $45,914 in Asian trading hours after having posting a record peak of $49,714.66 on Sunday, while rival crypto ethereum slid more than 8%.

Once on the fringes of finance, bitcoin is fast gaining legitimacy as an asset class and has leapt 20% in the week since electric carmaker Tesla Inc announced it had $1.5 billion in bitcoin and would accept the currency as payment.

It is up more than 60% for the year to date and has gained more than 1,100% since hitting a one-year low last March.

“There’s this unadulterated wave of big players (buying) that has continued to push the price higher,” said Chris Weston, head of research at Melbourne brokerage Pepperstone. “We might be seeing one or two big funds just cashing out,” he said.

“The big question is: OK, you want to buy the pullback, but how big is the pullback that we are talking about?”

Besides Tesla’s investment, Bank of NY Mellon last week said it formed a new unit to help clients own and trade digital assets.

Bloomberg reported on Saturday that Morgan Stanley’s investment arm is weighing a bet on bitcoin.

Bruce Springsteen: Jeep pulls Super Bowl advert after news of singer’s arrest for reckless driving

Bruce Springsteen’s Super Bowl advert for Jeep has been temporarily removed by the car company after the news that he was arrested last year for alleged DWI and reckless driving.

According to National Park Service officials, Springsteen was arrested on 14 November 2020 at the Gateway National Recreation Area in his native state of New Jersey.

Springsteen received three citations: DWI, reckless driving, and consuming alcohol in a closed area, a spokesperson told The Independent in a statement.

The musician was cooperative throughout the process.

The Independent has contacted Springsteen’s representatives for comment.

According to TMZ, the singer has a court appearance scheduled in the next few weeks.

The news comes three days after Springsteen appeared in a high-profile ad for Jeep during the Super Bowl.

The ad marked the first commercial endorsement in Springsteen’s career.

Titled “The Middle”, it’s narrated by the musician, who appeals for an end to divisions in America.

“Fear has never been the best of who we are,” Springsteen says in the clip. “And as for freedom, it’s not the property of just a fortunate few. It belongs to us all. Whoever you are, wherever you’re from, it’s what connects us, and we need that connection. We need the middle.”

A Jeep spokesperson told The Independent in a statement that the company is pausing the ad for the time being.

Springsteen’s most recent album, Letter to You, came out in October 2020. The album marks his first full release with the E Street Band since 2014, and is a follow-up to his 2019 Western Stars.

Australian weatherman pulls body from ocean after live broadcast

An Australian TV weatherman is being hailed as a hero after he stripped down and dived into dangerous waters at a local beach to recover the body of a man — while cameras were still rolling after a live broadcast just moments earlier.

Luke Bradnam, an anchor for Australia’s Channel Nine, was at Narrowneck beach in Queensland last week reporting on the treacherous water conditions when he was alerted that a person may be struggling in the ocean.

That’s when Bradnam quickly sprang into action.

“Just after I got off air chatting with you guys, a boogie boarder just behind here at Narrowneck alerted me that he thought he saw someone again out in the surf,” a wet and shirtless Bradnam recounted to his fellow anchors on-air following the Friday ordeal.

“I immediately stripped off and raced out with the boogie boarder to help the person in trouble,” Bradnam said.

Unfortunately, the man Bradnam ran in the waters to rescue did not survive.

“When we got closer it became pretty evident that there was a body floating in the water and the two of us were able to secure the body and make our way…back into shore,” the weatherman told viewers.

The body of the man Bradnam helped recover is believed to be 32-year-old British national Jake Jacobs who moved to the Gold Coast from the UK and was reported missing on Thursday, according to News.com.au.

A search and rescue mission had been launched after the body of Jacobs’ swimming partner was found late Thursday, the UK’s Mirror reported. Police believe the pair had gone out for a nude swim on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Bradnam described the situation as “pretty harrowing.”

The reporter told 9News.com.au he hopes to “never experience that again”.

“In the heat of the moment, I thought this is someone’s son, it’s going to bring some closure – we’ve just got to do it,” said Bradnam, who dove in the waters despite an injured shoulder.

Following the incident, many viewers took to social media to tout Bradnam for his actions.

“Thank you for risking your own lives to try & rescue another, & although the results weren’t what you’d hoped a families loved one is back with them,” Stuart Weaver tweeted.

Magicbeans does the only thing they can do at that moment: they leap out of the car. But they don’t land on the ramp, instead, they land on top of the other car, which is also falling off the ramp now. Google pulls Element’s Android chat app over content it doesn’t control

We’ve asked Google for comment.

While the option of sideloading the app softens the blow, this won’t exactly thrill the community. Multiple governments (including the US, UK, France and Germany) use Element and the Matrix network alongside universities and businesses — losing easy access to the app could be a significant hassle.

The move comes as tech giants have become increasingly sensitive to the content in apps they provide or host. Apple and Google both cracked down on Parler following the US Capitol riot, for instance. If Google pulled Element for content that wasn’t on the app maker’s servers, however, that would be problematic — it would effectively ask the team to screen an entire online platform, not just the section it can moderate.
