2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am odds, picks: Proven golf model reveals projected leaderboard, surprising predictions

The 2022-23 PGA Tour season continues this week with a trip to California for the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Play gets underway from a trio of course on Thursday, Feb. 2. Jordan Spieth, a 13-time PGA Tour champion, is listed as the 9-1 favorite according to the latest 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am odds. He’s followed by Viktor Hovland (10-1), Matt Fitzpatrick (10-1), Maverick McNealy (16-1) and Tom Hoge (17-1) on the PGA odds board.

We simulated the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am 10,000 times, and there are some MAJOR surprises.

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been RED-HOT since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up over $8,600 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model predicted Jon Rahm to finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. The model also included J.T. Poston in its best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet hit at +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $1,100. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scottie Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 longshot. The model was also all over Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend! Anyone who has followed it has seen MASSIVE returns!

One major surprise the model is calling for at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am 2023: Hoge, the defending champion and one of the favorites at 17-1, stumbles this week and doesn’t even crack the top-five. Another surprise: Keith Mitchell, a 31-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a HUGE payday!

Also, the model is targeting THREE other golfers with odds of 24-1 or longer who will make a STRONG run at the title, including a massive 48-1 longshot who makes a strong run! Anyone who backs these golfers could hit it BIG. You ABSOLUTELY need to see who they are before locking in any 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am picks!

So who wins the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am 2023? And which HUGE longshots make a serious run at the title? … Join SportsLine right now to see who you can bank on to win the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and see which longshots make a run at the title, all from the model that’s nailed 8 majors!

Chicago Bears Free Agent Targets’ Projected Contracts

The Chicago Bears will have more salary cap space than any team in the NFL next year by a wide margin. GM Ryan Poles has stated his goal is to build through the draft. That might be true, but it doesn’t change the fact he can’t plug every hole on this roster with the number of picks he currently has. He will have to do some spending on the veteran market. There is no shortage of options that could help the Bears improve in several key areas. It always comes down to how much it will cost.

Spotrac, one of the most popular salary cap websites out there, released an article detailing their projected valuations for major free agents next spring. Several names stood out as possible targets for the Bears. Here is a short list of the ones that make the most sense and what it might cost to get them.

The Chicago Bears now have an idea of the market.

DT Da’Ron Payne – 5 years, $71M

Payne has really come into his own this year. Most labeled him as a solid run defender during most of his time in Washington. He finally shed that with 8.5 sacks in 13 games this season. He is a complete player at defensive tackle and somebody that can disrupt with interior pass rush consistently.

DT Dre’Mont Jones – 3 years, $21M

It’s surprising how overlooked Jones is. He plays on one of the best defenses in the NFL but is constantly overshadowed by more celebrated teammates. All the while, he has been a steady sack producer on the interior, with 5.5 sacks in 12 games this season.

EDGE Yannick Ngakoue – 4 years, $60M

As former 5th round picks go, Ngakoue has vastly outplayed his draft slot for years. If you’re a team looking for somebody to give you 8-10 sacks per year, then he’s your guy. He isn’t much more than a good pass rusher, which is fine. The Chicago Bears coaches can work around that.

CB Jamel Dean – 3 years, $27M

Kindle Vildor’s comeback story was short-lived. The Bears are thin at cornerback. They might feel the need to pair somebody with Jaylon Johnson. Dean is allowed a 68.7 passer rating this season. He’s one of the best young corners in the game and doesn’t get nearly enough love.

OT Orlando Brown – 5 years, $112M

This might be problematic. Brown wants to be a left tackle. Chicago seems happy with Braxton Jones in that spot. They do, however, need a right tackle. Could they convince Brown to switch if they offer him the money he wants? If so, they’d put two nasty powerhouses together on the right side with Teven Jenkins.

OT Jack Conklin – 2 years, $22M

This is a case of either or. Would the Bears prefer the younger option that will command a huge contract or the older veteran that is cheaper? Conklin is still really good and not yet 30 years old. He should be able to plug the right tackle spot for at least two or three years as Poles fixes other areas.

OG Elgton Jenkins – 3 years, $21M

Luke Getsy has already targeted former Packers before. If by some chance, Jenkins hits the market, he will absolutely be pounding the table for the Pro Bowl guard. It is an easy decision with Cody Whitehair getting older. The Bears could even consider plugging him into the right tackle spot if necessary.

RB Saquon Barkley – 4 years, $48M

The speculation is already out there. Barkley is an undeniable star at running back. The Chicago Bears are a run-first team. Pairing him with Justin Fields seems like a no-brainer. They have more than enough money to afford it. Would Poles risk it? That is difficult to say at this point.

WR Jacobi Meyers – 4 years, $50M

It’s obvious the Bears still need more options at wide receiver. Meyers has been productive in New England despite quarterback issues. He’s quick, fast, and a sharp route runner. He’d be a nice threat in the slot, which is something this team needs. That price is an interesting discussion, though.

Raphael Warnock projected as winner over Herschel Walker

CBS News projects that incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock wins the U.S. Senate runoff in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger Herschel Walker.

This will be Warnock’s first full six-year term.

In the general election, Warnock topped Walker by over 37,000 votes, but with 49.4% of the vote, Warnock failed to cross the 50% threshold necessary to avoid a runoff.

A record-breaking number of early voters turned out in the runoff, smashing all previous records. According to Georgia Deputy Secretary of State Gabriel Sterling, over 1.8 million people voted early. Friday, the last day of early voting, was the single biggest early voting day ever, with more than 353,000 Georgians casting their ballots, according to the state’s top elections official, Gabriel Sterling.

Early voting for the runoff has been highest in several Democratic leaning counties around Atlanta, such as Fulton, Gwinnett and DeKalb County. Some GOP leaders are looking ahead to coming elections with the understanding that they must increase their own early voting numbers to be competitive.

“What we do need is, our voters need to vote early,” RNC chair Ronna McDaniel said on Fox News earlier Tuesday. “I have said this over and over again. There were many in 2020 saying, ‘Don’t vote by mail, don’t vote early,’ and we have to stop that.”

A record-breaking number of early voters turned out in the runoff, smashing all previous records. According to Georgia Deputy Secretary of State Gabriel Sterling, over 1.8 million people voted early. Friday, the last day of early voting, was the single biggest early voting day ever, with more than 353,000 Georgians casting their ballots, according to Sterling.

Since Democrats flipped the seat in Pennsylvania and successfully defended the other seats in play in the November midterm elections, Democrats will retain control of the Senate, regardless of the outcome on Tuesday. But they will have more power if they control the chamber 51-49 since they will not have to work out a power-sharing agreement with Republicans. This will be the last election of the 2022 midterm cycle.

Walker picked up a last-minute endorsement from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and former President Donald Trump held a telerally for Walker over the weekend. Walker told CBS News’ Nikole Killion on Tuesday morning that he believed they would win by 100,000 votes.

Warnock spent Tuesday with canvassers in get out the vote efforts. He told CBS News’ Nikole Killion that he felt the early turnout was good for his campaign and “now we’re going to win this election.”

According to exit polls on Election Day, voters in Georgia were split in their views of the most important qualities in a candidate: 36% said it was most important that the candidate shared their values, while 32% said a candidate’s honesty and integrity were most important to them.

Ahead of the general election, Walker’s campaign was rocked in October by allegations that he paid for at least one woman to have an abortion. He has denied the allegations, and national Republicans stuck by him.

Georgia played a key role in the 2020 elections, when the races for both Senate seats went into special runoff elections in January 2021, ultimately flipping both seats from Republican to Democratic. Republican incumbent Sen. David Perdue led Jon Ossoff after Election Night with 49.7% of the vote, but he ended up falling short in the runoff on Jan. 5, 2021. In the race for the other seat, Warnock led incumbent Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a 21-person race on Election Day, and he prevailed in the special election to fill the vacancy left when Sen. Johnny Isakson stepped down.

Elizabeth Campbell and Aaron Navarro contributed to this report.

Kari Lake travels to Mar-a-Lago fresh off projected loss in Arizona

Comment

Kari Lake, who was projected Monday to lose her race for governor of Arizona, traveled Thursday to former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida, according to two people familiar with the activity.

One of the people said she received a standing ovation when she entered a luncheon hosted at the club by the America First Policy Institute, a think tank founded last year by Trump allies and former members of his administration. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private events.

The think tank is holding a “Gala and Experience” at Trump’s club on Thursday and Friday. An agenda says the event’s aim is to “ensure polices are prepared and finalized for new sessions of Congress and the state house.”

Lake has not conceded defeat. The visit to Mar-a-Lago, while vote counting continues in Arizona, signals that she is already taking steps to maintain her profile in the former president’s orbit. Her support also could prove consequential for Trump, who launched his 2024 presidential campaign this week under criticism for his role in the party’s underwhelming performance in the midterm elections.

Lake, a former television news anchor, modeled her bid for governor on Trump’s campaigns and echoed his false assertions that he was cheated out of reelection in 2020. She speaks to the former president regularly, according to current and former campaign advisers. The former president called in to her campaign’s “war room” on Sunday to express disbelief that Republicans were trailing in vote counts and to express support for her and other GOP candidates.

Lake was projected Monday to lose the race to Democrat Katie Hobbs, the current secretary of state. On Tuesday, Lake reacted to Trump’s announcement of a third bid for the White House by declaring on Twitter that he had her “complete and total endorsement!” Lake was frequently discussed as a potential vice-presidential pick for Trump, although she maintained on the campaign trail that she intended to serve a full term as governor if elected.

Now that she’s been defeated for state office, her political path is less clear. On Thursday, she told her supporters on social media that “we are still in this fight,” denouncing Maricopa County, home to Phoenix and more than half the state’s voters, for problems on Election Day that involved malfunctioning printers.

In the early hours of Election Day, printers at 70 of the county’s 223 polling sites produced ballots with ink that was too light to be read by vote-counting machines. That caused ballots to be rejected by the machines. Voters were told to either wait in line, travel to another voting location or deposit their ballots in secure boxes that were transferred to downtown Phoenix and counted there. County officials dispatched technicians to fix settings on the printers experiencing the problems. While technicians were out at other polling locations, they also changed settings on printers proactively, a county spokesperson said. County officials plan to investigate the root cause of the printer problems in the coming weeks.

Lake and her allies have cast the problems as “voter suppression,” a theme that may become central to GOP legal efforts in statewide races. But county officials have repeatedly said no one was denied the right to vote and noted various instances of Republicans spreading misinformation about the use of the secure boxes on Election Day, despite such boxes having been used for years.

Her campaign also issued a series of video testimonials from voters who claim to have been denied a chance to vote. They included a link to a fundraising page for Lake’s campaign.

A judge refused a request from Republicans to extend voting hours on Election Day in light of the problems, finding that no one had been prevented from voting. Lake’s campaign is weighing its legal options in coordination with Abraham Hamadeh, the Republican candidate for attorney general who is trailing his Democratic opponent but whose race has not yet been called, according to people with knowledge of the deliberations.

GOP projected to retake control of the House in key win after Democrats held Senate

Republicans are projected to retake control of the House in the midterm elections, breaking Democrats’ unified control of the federal government, ABC News reports.

Despite other midterm disappointments, that marks a major victory for the party that’s been the chamber’s minority since 2019 — and will be a blow to President Joe Biden’s agenda in Congress.

Democrats already won control of the Senate, securing 50 seats with the opportunity to gain one more in the Georgia runoff next month between incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and his Republican opponent, Herschel Walker.

But Republicans, who will take over in the House in January, will now be able to block White House legislative priorities, decide what bills come to the chamber floor and have the opportunity to launch committee investigations into the Biden administration.

Several House Republicans have already said they intend to investigate Hunter Biden, the president’s son, and look into the administration’s policies on COVID-19 and the southern border.

The GOP House leader, California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, was nominated by his colleagues this week to be the next speaker, the chamber’s top position and second in line to the presidency.

“I’m proud to announce the era of one-party, Democrat rule in Washington is over,” McCarthy said after the intraparty leadership vote on Tuesday.

In a tweet on Wednesday night, he wrote, “Americans are ready for a new direction, and House Republicans are ready to deliver.”

Biden also released a statement on Wednesday that alluded to some Republican losses in the midterms but said: “I congratulate Leader McCarthy on Republicans winning the House majority, and am ready to work with House Republicans to deliver results for working families.”

McCarthy unveiled his party’s vision for Republican rule ahead of the midterms. Their “Commitment to America” plan focused on four key areas: creating an “economy that’s strong,” “a nation that’s safe,” “a future that’s built on freedom” and “a government that’s accountable.”

The pitch to voters largely avoided specific policy, instead focusing on criticisms of and contrast with Biden’s leadership — specifically on high inflation and anxiety surrounding crime.

McCarthy also vowed to bring down federal government spending and said Republicans are prepared to seek more congressional oversight for the billions in financial assistance to Ukraine as the nation defends itself from Russia’s invasion.

Republicans had been favored for months to win back control of the chamber, according to FiveThirtyEight’s forecast. Midterms have historically been a referendum on the president’s party.

Just twice in the past 19 midterm cycles — stretching back nearly 40 years — has the president’s party actually gained seats in the House.

But the anticipated “red wave” didn’t fully materialize, as Democrats kept the Senate and limited their losses in the House. Exit polling showed that voters, including independents, favored Democrats on key issues like abortion access despite the public’s disapproval of economic conditions.

“We know our job will not be easy,” McCarthy said on Tuesday. “We know the task. We’ve got a close majority. We’ll have to work together. We want to work with anyone who wants to make America stronger.”

Biden, meanwhile, has celebrated staving off historical headwinds after casting the elections as a choice between Democratic priorities and those of far-right “MAGA Republicans” rather than an appraisal of his first two years as commander-in-chief.

“I’m incredibly pleased by the turnout,” Biden told reporters when Democrats were projected to win the Senate. “And I think it’s a reflection of the quality of our candidates.”
