The weekend’s best deals: Apple iPad, MacBook Pro, OLED TVs, and more

Ars Technica

It’s the weekend, which means it’s time for another Dealmaster. Our latest roundup of the best tech deals from around the web includes the lowest price we’ve tracked for Apple’s 10.2-inch iPad, which is currently down to $280 at various retailers. That’s about $50 off Apple’s MSRP and roughly $25 off the average street price we’ve seen online in recent months.

You can read our review from last September for more details, but in short, we consider the 10.2-inch iPad to be the best option for most people in the market for an Apple tablet. Yes, its A13 Bionic chip isn’t as powerful as the M1 SoC found in the iPad Air and iPad Pro, and the device’s older design language means it lacks the USB-C ports, laminated touchscreens, upgraded cameras, and wider accessory support of those higher-end models. The 64GB of storage in this entry-level variant isn’t a ton, either. But as a pleasant-to-use screen for reading, streaming, web browsing, and playing the occasional game, the base iPad is still plenty competent. It’s fast enough for the essentials, it’s still usable for lighter work when paired with a good keyboard case, and it supports all the same apps as any other iPad. It’s a boring device, but it works, and it remains a significant step-up from cheaper Android tablets. Most importantly, it’s far and away the most affordable iPad, particularly at this deal price.
The caveat here is that Apple is expected to introduce a new entry-level iPad by the end of the year. We don’t expect a refreshed model to arrive during the company’s just-announced September 7 event, but if history holds, we could very well see it announced in October. Recent rumors suggest this new model could feature a major redesign that brings the device more in line with the look and feel of the iPad Air, iPad Pro, and iPad Mini. (This could also result in a removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, though it’s hard to say that for sure just yet.) Either way, if you don’t need a new tablet right now, it’s probably worth waiting. But if you do, this is a new low for a tablet that was already a decent value.

Elsewhere, our deals roundup includes a new low on Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro—which, like the iPad, could be refreshed later this fall, but may still have appeal at this deal price for developers and power users who need a new model today. We also have lower-than-usual prices on new well-reviewed OLED TVs from LG and Samsung, Google’s Chromecast, Microsoft’s Xbox Series S, HyperX gaming headsets, Intel CPUs, Surface laptops, and more. You can check out our full curated list of deals below.

Images Allegedly Show Real iPhone 14 Pro Display Cutouts and Status Bar Items

Following Apple’s announcement that it will hold an event on Wednesday, September 7, several alleged leaks coming out of Asia purport to show the iPhone 14 Pro’s display cutouts and status bar items.

Twitter user “DuanRui” today shared several images from Chinese social media site Weibo, with one seemingly showing a close-up, real-world image of the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌’s “pill and hole-punch” TrueDepth camera array cutouts that are expected to replace the notch.

For reference, Twitter leaker known as “Ice Universe” shared an image of the front of an ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ dummy earlier today. In the image, the display cutouts are clearly artificial, which may make the above image much more believable.

At the same time, leaker “ShrimpApplePro” shared a segment of a screenshot allegedly from an ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max, overlaid with an identical screenshot from an iPhone 13 Pro Max, to show how Apple is purportedly planning to enlarge and realign the status bar’s items to account for the new “pill and hole-punch” TrueDepth camera array design.

Another alleged screenshot from ShrimpApplePro shows how the entire status bar is arranged on the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max, repositioning the cellular signal, Wi-Fi, and battery indicators slightly lower and to the right.

The standard iPhone 14 models are expected to retain the same notch used on the iPhone 13 linep, with the “pill and hole-punch” being one of the main selling points of the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max. The devices are also expected to feature the A16 chip, an always-on display, a 48-megapixel Wide camera, and more.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max: Biggest rumored upgrades

The Apple September event is nearly upon us, making an iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max comparison more relevant than ever. At that event, Apple will likely introduce its latest iPhones, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max figures to be the top device in the iPhone 14 lineup.

After all, the iPhone 13 Pro Max currently claims that title. It’s the best phone you can buy right now, and it’s the winner of the Tom’s Guide Award 2022 for the best phone of the past year. Topping the iPhone 13 Pro Max figures to be a tall order, even for a phone maker with Apple’s track record of rolling out improved devices every fall.

Based on the iPhone 14 Pro rumors we’ve heard in the build-up to this fall’s release, though, Apple may be up to the task. The Pro lineup is tipped to get the most substantial upgrades among Apple’s newest handsets and as the biggest and most expensive model, the iPhone 13 Pro Max should reap the most benefits from that strategy.

We won’t know how the new Pro Max model compares to its predecessor until Apple officially unveils the iPhone 14 lineup. But thanks to the steady stream of rumors about Apple’s upcoming iPhone plans, we have a pretty good idea of the iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max differences.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max price

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first — you’re probably going to pay more for the iPhone 14 Pro Max than you would have paid for the same-sized iPhone Pro model last year. Multiple rumors indicate that the price of the iPhone 14 Pro models is going up by $100. That would mean the iPhone 14 Pro would start at the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s debut price of $1,099 while the iPhone 14 Pro Max itself would cost $1,199. That’s as much as Samsung charges for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the nearest competitor to the iPhone Pro Max model.

You’re not totally out of luck if you want a big-screen iPhone but don’t want to pay more than $1,000 for it. Reportedly, Apple is introducing a new iPhone 14 Max model this fall. Think the standard iPhone only with a Max-sized screen. That phone is tipped to come in at $899, though as our iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 14 Pro comparison indicates, the Pro model’s going to have more enhancements to justify the higher price.

And that’s what an iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max comparison comes down to, if Apple really does opt for that $100 price hike. Will the new features on this year’s model make people forget about the higher price? Let’s dive deeper into the rumored features to find out.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max design and display

At first glance, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is likely to resemble its predecessor, with flat edges surrounding a 6.7-inch display that takes up much of the phone’s face. The difference this time around is that there’s not expected to be any notch dipping into the top of the screen. Instead, the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s front camera and Face ID sensors are rumored to be housed in dual cutouts that should give you a little bit more screen space to work with. Whether the cutouts prove to be more distracting than the notch on the iPhone 13 Pro Max remains to be seen.

The back of the phones should look the same, with one noticeable difference. Because the iPhone 14 Pro Max is getting a bigger camera sensor, it may mean a slightly larger camera array. That’s notable since it’s not like the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s camera array was considered svelte.

The graphite, silver and gold colors from the iPhone 13 Pro Max are likely sticking around for the new model. Other iPhone 14 color rumors point to a new purple option for the pro models. That would leave the current Sierra Blue and Alpine Green colors on the iPhone 13 Pro Max out in the cold.

Apple’s current Pro models feature Pro Motion displays, with dynamic refresh rates that scale between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on the on-screen action. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is almost certain to retain this adaptive refresh rate, and there’s a rumor that hints at the refresh rate going as low as 1Hz, which mould match the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s range. It would also clear the way for an always-on display feature for the iPhone 14 Pro models.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max cameras

While the same rear camera array featuring wide, ultrawide and telephoto lenses is coming to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, expect a big change to that main camera. Rumors tip the iPhone 14 Pro series to have a 48MP main camera, ending years of 12MP sensors appearing on Apple’s phones. Along with a bigger sensor, the new camera is expected to deliver brighter images than past iPhones while also supporting 8K video.

We haven’t heard about any rumored changes to the ultrawide and telephoto lenses of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. It’s possible Apple could also introduce new camera software features similar to the Cinematic Mode that debuted with the iPhone 13 lineup.

Up front, at least one analyst believes the entire iPhone 14 lineup is getting a new selfie cam. The updated camera is expected to feature a wider aperture and a more complex 6-part lens; it’s tipped to include autofocus as well. The rumored changes make sense given Apple’s recent focus on video chats.

Add up all these changes, and it’s looking like the iPhone 14 Pro Max will provide a better camera experience than the iPhone 13 Pro Max — impressive, since that latter phone already ranks as the best camera phone in our estimation.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max performance

While some rumors suggest the standard iPhone 14 isn’t going to see an upgrade over the A15 Bionic processor that powered the iPhone 13 lineup, there’s no such concern for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Pro models of this year’s iPhone lineup should be in line for a new A16 Bionic chipset that promises better performance and more efficient use of power.

Just how much better? An A16 Bionic vs. A15 Bionic comparison suggests it won’t be a big jump, as the new chipset is going to be built on the same 5-nanometer process as its predecessor. Since the A16 will be Apple’s third 5nm chipset, any overall boost is going to be modest at best. There’s some talk of Apple adding another core to the A16’s GPU, which would be a boost to graphics performance, though. Since the A15 already outperforms Android phones, we’d expect the iPhone 14 Pro Max to ride the A16 Bionic to the best benchmark numbers we’ve seen from a phone.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max will likely have the same amount of RAM as the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but Apple’s new Pro models may turn to faster LPDDR5 memory. Another rumor suggests that the Pro models this year will start with 256GB of storage instead of 128GB, possibly as a way to take the sting out of that $100 price hike; however, a more recent report shoots down this iPhone 14 Pro Max storage rumor.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max battery life and charging

For the iPhone 13 lineup, Apple increased battery sizes all around, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max jumping to a 4,352 mAh cell. That helped the phone last 12 hours and 16 minutes on our battery test, putting the iPhone 13 Pro Max on our best phone battery life list.

It’s unlikely Apple can squeeze in an even bigger battery for the iPhone 14 Pro Max — in fact, one report suggests a slightly smaller battery compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Still, given the likely power efficiency improvements of both the A16 Bionic chipset and the display refresh rate, the iPhone 14 Pro Max should be able to keep pace with its predecessor.

iPhones continue to charge at 20W, while rival Android devices push for faster and faster charging speeds. We haven’t heard much about the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s expected charging prowess, though a rumor earlier this year said that Apple was working on 30W charging. Any improvement would be welcome here, though the iPhone 13 Pro Max does reach 50% capacity after half-an-hour.

There’s at least one change we’re pretty confident the iPhone 14 Pro Max won’t make: we’re unlikely to see a USB-C port on this year’s models. There had been some hope for that, as European regulators are pushing Apple to move away from its proprietary Lightning charging. But analysts aren’t expecting that switch to happen until 2023.

iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max outlook

The iPhone 13 Pro Max was a near-perfect phone that raised the bar for every phone that came after it — the iPhone 14 Pro Max, included. We’ll soon see if Apple’s upcoming phone is up to the challenge of topping last year’s model, but the many rumored changes suggest that Apple’s leaving nothing to chance.

Safety concerns loom as writers show public support for Rushdie

NEW YORK, Aug 19 (Reuters) – Under the watch of counterterrorism officers and police in tactical gear, hundreds of people gathered in front of the New York Public Library on Friday to show support for Salman Rushdie, the author stabbed multiple times at a literary event a week ago.

Irish novelist Colum McCann, British writer Hari Kunzru and others read passages from Rushdie’s works from the top of the flagship library branch’s steps off Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. Below, at a distance enforced by organizers, a crowd of about 400 people gathered to listen, breaking out into a chant of “Stand with Salman” when the event concluded.

Some held signs depicting Rushdie and quoting him saying, “If we are not confident of our freedom, then we are not free.”

The suspect has pleaded not guilty to second-degree attempted murder and assault charges.

“I hope this is a wake-up call that people like Salman, who are fearless, who write things as they see them, who are not afraid to speak the truth as they view it, really are in danger,” said PEN America Chief Executive Suzanne Nossel. The nonprofit free-expression and human rights group helped organize the event.

Attendees spoke of their worries for themselves and other writers following the attack.

“We’re all in danger. And some of us are more overtly in danger than the rest,” Iranian-American author Roya Hakakian said in an interview.

While the death sentence, or fatwa, ordered on Rushdie by Iran was among the most high-profile threats, many authors say harassment and calls for violence have become part of the experience of being a writer.

“Love Is an Ex-Country” author Randa Jarrar said in an email interview this week that she had to learn how to “better aim a gun” and prepare physically in case of attack after a tweet about former first lady Barbara Bush prompted threats.

When Bush died in 2018, Jarrar described her as an “amazing racist” for a comment about the majority-Black communities displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

The Muslim author said she feared for her life when critics posted her home address and phone number online. She and her child began receiving death threats.

Every threat she received mentioned that she is Muslim and warned her to go back to where she came from, Jarrar said. She moved, and hired a company to scrub her private data from the internet.

Queer Chicana writer Myriam Gurba faced threats after she criticized author Jeanine Cummins in 2020 of cultural appropriation in writing the novel “American Dirt,” which focused on a Mexican woman who escaped a drug cartel to build a new life in the United States as an undocumented immigrant.

Gurba said many people supported her, but she also received threats of violence on her phone and the internet.

“The first death threat that I received stated that the police should execute me for my stupidity,” she said.

This week, police in Scotland said they were investigating a threat against “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling following her tweet voicing concern for Rushdie. read more

At least one upcoming literary festival is tightening security. Organizers of September’s National Book Festival, hosted by the Library of Congress in Washington, had already planned to require bag searches.

Now, the festival is working with law enforcement to add extra measures, a spokesperson said.

At the New York Public Library, some writers said they did not fear gathering in public.

“The only time I got anxious was when they told us how much security there was going to be, thinking maybe there have been some threats, but I doubt it,” author Paul Auster said.

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro leak in new hands-on video

During Google I/O 2022, the company gave the world a sneak peek at its upcoming flagship handsets, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. While we still don’t know much about the phones, we know that Google’s next-gen Tensor processor will power them and that the design will look identical to the current Pixel 6 line. Although we still have a few more months to wait until the full reveal, it looks like the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have once again leaked, this time in a full hands-on video.

The Unbox Therapy YouTube channel got its hands on a set of phones, which are not retail units and look to be Engineering Validation Test (EVT) devices. This isn’t the first time we are seeing Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro EVT models in the wild. In May, an eBay listing showcased both phones, with software intact and in working order. The device would again pop up in June, this time from a Reddit user who purchased the handset from Facebook Marketplace. Unfortunately, this EVT was wiped. In addition, the serial numbers found on the devices in the video don’t seem to match the ones previously reported, which means we are seeing different models from a couple of months back.

While the two phones are present physically, as far as the software goes, they look to be completely wiped. Regardless, this is an excellent chance to get a first glimpse and even a comparison against the current generation of Pixel phones. One of the first things you’ll notice is that the EVT models do not have a Google badge on the rear. The unique camera visor is back for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, but there is a slight difference compared to the previous model, as the color has now been updated with a subtle chrome accent.

Regarding size, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro owners might be in for a little treat, as the size of the new phones could be slightly smaller than the previous models. Regarding height, the Pixel 7s are a tad shorter and thinner when not including the camera visor. In addition, the Pixel 7 Pro is a little wider, while the Pixel 7 is a bit more narrow. For those concerned about the weight, the new Pro model weighs one gram more, while the standard model weighs 10 grams less.

As far as the internals, details about Google’s new Tensor processor could not be uncovered but what was revealed from the bootloader is that the Pixel 7 Pro that Unbox Therapy has packs 12GB RAM with 256G of storage, while the Pixel 7 has 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. These match what we have seen in the Pixel 6 series. The baseband also matches the Exynos modem found in the Exynos 2200, the g5300, which will hopefully offer much-needed improvements to signal strength on the Pixel 7 series.

One thing to note is that the hardware shown in the video is close but not final. There is still the possibility that things could change in the future, as these smartphones are merely for engineering testing, and are pretty early on in the testing sequence of a new smartphone. Once it passes this stage (and subsequent ones, like DVT and PVT), then the devices enter mass production and head to retail.

With that said, what are your thoughts on the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro?

5 useful Android apps I’m enjoying on my Pixel 6 Pro right now

While I did cancel my Google Play Pass subscription and no longer really browse through the apps section of the Play Store, I have amassed a number of interesting and unique apps which I’ve gone on to rely on over the past year. I’m always in search of new and exciting experiences, and ever since I got my Pixel 6 Pro from Google, I’ve taken time to load it up with my favorites.

Today, I wanted to share a few apps that I’m enjoying on my phone that you may or may not have heard of before today. The following intentionally omit games and the usual Google apps and other big-name titles as writing about what you’ve already got installed on your devices would be kind of a waste of time. Without further ado, let’s take a look!

Tracking my workouts

I love Google Fit, but there’s one thing it really doesn’t do as well as I would have hoped. Yes, it tracks your steps, lets you gauge your breath, heart rate, and more, it kind of sucks at letting you track sets and reps while weight training (thanks for removing that, Google) as well as letting you build workout schedules.

For that reason, I’ve turned to GymKeeper. It uses a very Googley design, with each of your workouts on the calendar being represented by a different color dot. The one thing I must have with my apps is a nice layout, easy navigation and if possible, Material Design. In this case, I got as close as I could, and no other apps really fit the bill. I was overly pleased to have run into GymKeeper, and use it several times a week in the gym to track my gains.

Tracking my games backlog

As someone obsessed with tracking everything in his life (many times to a fault), I’ve attempted to fill out many a video game backlog tracker only to end up hating it for its lack of polish. Again, it must look nice and be exciting, automatically pulling in game cover art, metadata, and more. Stash does all of this and more.

Now, you’ve got Play Books and TV for tracking your reading and watching experiences, and you can use Stash to track what you play. Google really does need to buy these guys up or build something similar to fill that gap within its own ecosystem. You can attempt to use Google Collections as a game backlog tracker if you’d like, but it’s not ideal!

Reflecting daily on life

I try to use my Bullet Journal every day to gain insight into my life, how I’m living, and ultimately, to be more productive over time. However, for journalling experiences that occur in your life, using paper isn’t always the best as you can’t search your entries, and that means that larger, more analytical observations are more difficult to make.

Take it from someone who’s already installed and tested every single journal and diary app on the Play Store – Journey is hands down the best. It’s user friendly, beautiful, and just all-around cozy to use. It actually had the photo memories map long before Google Photos did, and there’s just something about seeing all of your entries on a calendar that Google can learn from.

Creating a budget (and trying to stick with it!)

While I’ve tried all of the journaling apps on the market, I’ve also spent an obsessive amount of time using every budgeting app available. Spendee is one of the best, most gorgeous apps you can install. You Need a Budget is a lot more popular, but Spendee makes managing your money much less intimidating. You can also share wallets with your loved ones, and tie the app straight into your bank for automatic transaction categorizations. You will need to adjust these periodically, but sitting down once or twice a week and doing so (or better yet, when you spend something!) will prevent this from becoming unruly.

Learning Japanese (or any other language)

I’m technically breaking my rule of installing and using only the most Googley, gorgeous, Material Design-inspired apps by promoting AnkiDroid, but as I learn Japanese and start to engage with “SRS” systems (spaced repetition), Anki is the go-to experience for practicing your language learning on the go.

Anki means “memorization” in Japanese, but the app can be used to help you learn any language, study for a medical or law exam, memorize people’s names or faces, brush up on geography, poetry, or even guitar chords. You manually load in intelligent flashcard decks that automatically and periodically recall incorrectly identified cards to increase your knowledge retention in a more effective way than traditional studying would.

If you’re interested in more articles like this, just let me know! I love sharing my favorite apps, but have never really done so. I’ve been looking back at my apps, web apps, and just all of the experiences I’ve tried out over the past few years and realized that hoarding all of that great information is just such a waste.

What are your favorite apps to use on your Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro? do you use another phone entirely? If so, what are you rocking right now? Do you tend to track your life and “lifelog” through apps, or do you just wing it and use the basics? Let’s chat about it below!

Kenya’s Ruto: From village chicken seller to president

SAMBUT, Kenya Aug 15 (Reuters) – In the rolling red hills outside the western Kenyan town of Eldoret, residents remember William Ruto as a barefoot schoolboy who used to sell chickens at a roadside stall.

Even then he possessed a fierce intelligence, they recalled, as they welcomed his ascent on Monday to his country’s presidency with a mixture of pride and disbelief. read more

“I could not imagine somebody who did not have shoes for all his life in primary school could become president,” said a grinning Esther Cherobon, who was in Ruto’s year at school.

“We imagine all leaders are from rich families.”

He was always the boy with the highest marks in the school in Sambut village, she said, where part of the institution he attended – a one-room mud building with a rusting iron sheet roof – still stands.

Ruto takes office as Kenya faces a convergence of challenges. Billions of dollars in loans that outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta borrowed to finance an infrastructure splurge are falling due.

The worst drought for 40 years has devastated the north, forcing 4 million people to rely on food aid.

Now 55, Ruto made Kenya’s class divisions the centrepiece of his campaign to become Kenya’s fifth president, promising to reward low-income “hustlers” and pouring scorn on Kenya’s political dynasties.

That was a barely veiled jab at his opponent Raila Odinga – who Ruto defeated in a tight ballot whose outcome Kenya’s electoral commission took almost a week to announce – and Kenyatta, son of the nation’s first vice president and president, respectively.

POLITICAL DANCE

But Kenyan politics is often a dance performed with convenient partners rather than rooted in political differences, and the circumstances of Ruto’s rise were no exception.

He shot to prominence as a youth organizer for former strongman President Daniel arap Moi, becoming one of Kenya’s youngest lawmakers and ministers.

He had supported Odinga during hotly disputed elections in 2007, when 1,200 people were killed after political violence sparked ethnic cleansing.

Both he and Kenyatta faced charges at the International Criminal Court over the violence, in a cases that later collapsed. A Kenyan lawyer is now on trial, accused of interfering with witnesses in Ruto’s case – accusations he denies.

Ruto then switched sides and became Kenyatta’s deputy president in 2013. But they fell out after the 2017 election, when Kenyatta reconciled with Odinga and distanced himself from Ruto.

Ruto insiders describe him as a gifted orator with a fierce work ethic.

During this campaign he chose a wheelbarrow to represent Kenya’s casual workers, though he himself – now a wealthy business magnate – travelled in a pimped-up sports utility vehicle emblazoned in party colours and nicknamed The Beast.

Odinga sought to undermine Ruto’s popularity by questioning the probity of his extensive business empire.

In July, a court ordered Ruto’s vice presidential pick Rigathi Gachagua to repay 202 million shillings ($2 million) which it determined were the proceeds of corruption. Gachagua and Ruto have dismissed the judgement as politically motivated. Gachagua has said he would appeal the ruling.

As president, Ruto has promised to reign in borrowing, publish opaque contracts with China, tackle corruption and disburse loans to small businesses. read more

Poor Kenyans, already reeling from COVID-19, are also grappling with global price increases of food and fuel. Many are angered by Kenyatta’s failure to reign in rampant corruption.

U.S. actor Anne Heche taken off life support 9 days after car crash

LOS ANGELES, Aug 14 (Reuters) – American actor Anne Heche was taken off life support on Sunday, nine days after suffering severe injuries in a fiery car crash, as a compatible person was found to receive her donated organs, a spokesperson said.

Heche, 53, had been legally dead since Friday, though still with a heartbeat, and was kept on life support to preserve her organs so they could be donated, her representatives said.

“Anne Heche has been peacefully taken off life support,”

spokesperson Holly Baird said in a statement.

Heche’s Mini Cooper sped out of control, plowed into a house and burst into flames on Aug. 5, leading to an agonizing hospital stay with increasingly grave messages from her family and representatives.

On Friday, one of her two sons, 19-year-old Homer Laffoon, issued statement saying: “My by brother Atlas and I lost our Mom.”

Heche, who starred in the movies “Donnie Brasco,” “Wag The Dog” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” struggled for decades with the fallout from a troubled childhood and was part of a groundbreaking same-sex couple in the 1990s.

Winner of a Daytime Emmy Award in 1991 for her roles as identical twin sisters in the NBC soap opera “Another World,” Heche starred in the 1998 adventure comedy “Six Days Seven Nights” with Harrison Ford and played alongside Demi Moore and Cher in the HBO TV movie “If These Walls Could Talk.”

She became one half of Hollywood’s most famous same-sex couple at the time when she dated comedian and actress Ellen DeGeneres. Against the wishes of her studio, Heche came out publicly at the 1997 red carpet premiere for disaster movie “Volcano,” taking DeGeneres along as her date.

The pair were together for more than three years before Heche ended the relationship.

In an interview with Page Six entertainment website in October 2021, Heche said she was “blacklisted” by Hollywood because of her relationship with DeGeneres. “I didn’t do a studio picture for 10 years. I was fired from a $10 million picture deal and did not see the light of day in a studio picture.”

In 2001, she married Coleman Laffoon, a cameraman. After the couple divorced, Heche began a long-term relationship with actor James Tupper which ended in 2018.

Anne Celeste Heche was born in Aurora, Ohio on May 25, 1969, and was the youngest of five children. At age 13, she was shocked by her father’s death from AIDS and from the revelation that he had had secret gay relationships.

“He was in complete denial until the day he died,” Heche told CNN’s Larry King in 2001. She said in 1998 that his death taught her that the most important thing in life is to tell the truth.

Her brother, Nathan, died three months after their father in a car crash.

Heche said her father raped her as a child, causing her mental health struggles for decades after, including frequent fantasies that she was from another planet.

“I’m not crazy,” Heche told ABC News in 2001 on the release of her book “Call Me Crazy: A Memoir.”

“But it’s a crazy life. I was raised in a crazy family and it took 31 years to get the crazy out of me.”

Heche’s mother, Nancy, denied her daughter’s claim that she knew about the sexual abuse, calling it “lies and blasphemies” and her sister Abigail has said she believes the “memories regarding our father are untrue.” She said that Anne Heche had cast doubt herself on her own memories of that time.

Later in her career, Heche starred as a senior member of the Defense Intelligence Agency in the NBC TV series “The Brave” and appeared on competition show “Dancing With The Stars” in late 2020.

MSI MPG X670E Carbon WiFi Motherboard Listed Online For Over 550 Euros, PRO X670-P WiFi For Over 350 Euros

It’s not just the AMD Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” CPUs that are appearing on online listings but MSI’s X670 motherboards have also been listed by various Italian retailers.

MSI’s MPG X670E Carbon WiFi & Pro X670-P WiFi Motherboards Listed By Italian Retailers

There are various Italian retailers that have listed the two motherboards as discovered by resident Twitter Leaker, Momomo_US. Three Italian retailers which include Eurotronic, TekWorld & City Web Shop have the motherboards listed but do keep in mind that once again, these are preliminary lists with early prices which do not reflect the final MSRPs. The prices also include a +22% VAT for Italian market regions so that’s also accounted for.

With that said, the MSI MPG X670E Carbon WiFi being a high-end offering starts at 562.19 Euros & goes all the way up to 640.15 Euros while the Pro X670-P WiFi motherboard starts at 374.35 Euros and goes all the way up to 416.50 Euros. Following is the full pricing list along with retailer-specific links:

These are certainly much higher prices than the X570 predecessors and also more expensive than the Z690 offerings of the same tier. Hopefully, we will be getting decent prices at launch but the 22 percent VAT still applies in the European region.

PRO X670-P WiFI 416.50 Euros 341.39 Euros $351.64 USD
PRO X670-P WiFI 426.27 Euros 349.40 Euros $359.88 USD

MSI MPG X670E Carbon WIFI Motherboard – An All-Rounder With High-End I/O

MSI has also given the X670E treatment to its next CARBON WIFI motherboard. This means we will be getting the same PCIe Gen 5 support for storage and graphics on this motherboard too. Listed features include:

  • Extended Heatsink with heat-pipe
  • 18+2 phases / 90A power stages
  • Lightning Gen 5 slot & M.2 support
  • Screwless M.2 Shield Frozr
  • Onboard 2.5G LAN & WIFI 6E
  • USB Type-C supports up to DP 2.0

MSI PRO X670-P WIFI – Entry Into The X670 Segment With Quality Features!

Finally, we have the MSI PRO X670-P WIFI which combines stable functionality with high-quality assembly. Now one thing that MSI has told is that the X670E class motherboards will come with a 10-layer PCB design while the X670 motherboards will come with up to 8-layer PCBs. We know that the X670E class motherboards need those increased server-quality PCB layers to maintain the Gen 5.0 signal integrity for both discrete GPUs and storage. Since the X670 motherboard doesn’t have to offer both dGPU and M.2 Gen 5 support, they can do away with 8-layers which is still a high-end PCB design. The main features of the motherboard include:

  • Extended Heatsink Design
  • 14+2 phases / 80A SPS stages
  • Lightning Gen 5 M.2 support
  • 1x Double-side M.2 Shield Frozr
  • Onboard 2.5G LAN & WIFI 6E
  • USB Type-C supports up to DP 2.0

LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) – Scotland’s police said on Sunday they are investigating a report of an “online threat” made to the author JK Rowling after she tweeted her condemnation of the stabbing of Salman Rushdie.

The Harry Potter creator said she felt “very sick” after hearing the news and hoped the novelist would “be OK”.

In response, a user said “don’t worry you are next”

After sharing screenshots of the threatening tweet, Rowling said: “To all sending supportive messages: thank you police are involved (were already involved on other threats)”.

A spokeswoman for Scotland’s police said: “We have received a report of an online threat being made and officers are carrying out enquiries.”

Rushdie, 75, was set to deliver a lecture on artistic freedom on Friday in western New York when a man rushed the stage and stabbed the Indian-born writer, who has lived with a bounty on his head since his 1988 novel “The Satanic Verses” prompted Iran to urge Muslims to kill him.

Following hours of surgery, Rushdie was on a ventilator and unable to speak as of Friday evening. The novelist was likely to lose an eye and had nerve damage in his arm and wounds to his liver. read more

The accused attacker, 24-year-old Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey, pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault at a court appearance on Saturday.

Rowling has in the past been criticised by trans activists who have accused her of transphobia.
