OnePlus 9 Pro could feature Hasselblad-branded cameras

Leaked images of the unannounced OnePlus 9 Pro suggest the flagship smartphone will include a Hasselblad-branded camera array. The images shared in a recent Dave Lee YouTube video show four cameras on the rear of the phone. These include wide-angle, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses, the latter of which appears to offer up to a 3.3x optical zoom.

At this point it’s unclear exactly what this Hasselblad branding could mean for the OnePlus 9 Pro’s cameras. The Swedish manufacturer, which is majority owned by Chinese company DJI, is best known for its expensive medium format cameras, and has previously worked with Lenovo on a modular camera accessory for Moto Z devices, as well as Vertu for its Signature Touch smartphone. Hopefully the presence of its logo means Hasselblad has provided some real camera expertise to OnePlus beyond just brand cache.

While Dave Lee outlines three of the phone’s four rear cameras, it’s not obvious what the last sensor might be. Previous OnePlus phones have offered novelties like a color-filter camera and a black-and-while monochrome sensor. Dave Lee’s video mentions that the phone could have a built-in tilt-shift photography mode that could relate to the fourth sensor, but it could equally just be a depth-sensing or macro camera based on OnePlus’ previous phones.

Beyond the camera array, the photos shared on the Dave2D channel corroborate a previous leak reported by Android Authority that said the phone will include a curved 1440p 120Hz display. The device shown by Dave Lee appears to have an unusual 11GB of RAM (most other phones have 12GB or 8GB), and 256GB of internal storage. A separate report previously claimed the phone will be able to fast-charge at 45W wirelessly, up from the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 30W wireless fast-charging speed.

The OnePlus 9 Pro is expected to be one of two or even three phones announced by the company next month, Android Central reports. Alongside it, we could see the OnePlus 9 (which itself was leaked in a series of photos last December), as well as a more affordable OnePlus 9 Lite.

Former Raiders, Seattle Seahawks coach Tom Flores elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame, source says

Former Raiders and Seattle Seahawks coach Tom Flores has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2021, a source told ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez.

Flores was the lone finalist in the coach category for the Class of 2021.

Flores won Super Bowl rings as a player, assistant coach and head coach to go with an AFL championship as a player.

Flores and Hall of Famer Mike Ditka are the only people in NFL history who have been Super Bowl winners as players, assistant coaches and head coaches. His nine seasons as the Raiders’ coach included two Super Bowl victories, an 8-3 postseason record and a .727 playoff winning percentage, which ranks behind only Vince Lombardi.

The full Class of 2021, which will be unveiled Saturday night on CBS, was chosen Jan. 19 by the Hall’s board of selectors during a virtual meeting. The new Hall of Famers will be enshrined during a multiday event Aug. 5-9 in Canton, Ohio. The extended enshrinement weekend will also include ceremonies for the Hall’s Class of 2020, as well as the Centennial class of Hall of Famers selected as part of the league’s 100th anniversary. Both were canceled last year because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The Hall’s Class of 2020 includes Steve Atwater, Isaac Bruce, Steve Hutchinson, Edgerrin James and Troy Polamalu. The Centennial class includes Harold Carmichael, Jim Covert, Bill Cowher, Bobby Dillon, Cliff Harris, Winston Hill, Jimmy Johnson, Alex Karras, Steve Sabol, Donnie Shell, Duke Slater, Mac Speedie, Ed Sprinkle, Paul Tagliabue and George Young.

Apple’s MacBook Pro with the new M1 processor is one of the best-performing laptops on the market in its price range. McKinsey Agrees to $573 Million Settlement Over Opioid Advice

Consulting giant McKinsey & Co. has reached a $573 million settlement with states over its work advising OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP and other drug manufacturers to aggressively market opioid painkillers, according to people familiar with the matter.

The deal, reached with 47 states and the District of Columbia and expected to be publicly announced Thursday, would avert civil lawsuits that attorneys general could bring against McKinsey, the people said. The majority of the money will be paid upfront, with the rest dispensed in four yearly payments starting in 2022.

McKinsey said last week it is cooperating with government agencies on matters related to its past work with opioid manufacturers, as state and local governments sue companies up and down the opioid supply chain. At least 400,000 people have died in the U.S. from overdoses of legal and illegal opioids since 1999, according to federal data.

The consulting firm stopped doing opioid-related work in 2019 and said in December its work for Purdue was intended to support the legal use of opioids and help patients with legitimate medical needs.

While some companies have reached deals with individual states to avoid trials, the McKinsey settlement marks the first nationwide opioid pact to come from the flood of litigation that began in 2017. A much larger, $26 billion deal with three drug distributors and Johnson & Johnson has been in the works for more than a year but is still being negotiated.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that McKinsey was close to a settlement with states and that a deal could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The negotiations occurred as hundreds of exhibits describing McKinsey’s work to boost OxyContin sales were made public in recent months during Purdue’s chapter 11 bankruptcy case in White Plains, N.Y.

Memos McKinsey sent Purdue executives in 2013 that have been made public in bankruptcy court filings included recommendations that the company’s sales team target health care providers it knew wrote the highest volumes of OxyContin prescriptions and shift away from lower-volume prescribers. McKinsey’s work became a Purdue initiative called “Evolve to Excellence,” which the U.S. Justice Department described in papers released last year in connection with a plea agreement with Purdue as an aggressive OxyContin marketing and sales campaign.

According to bankruptcy court records, McKinsey sent recommendations to Purdue in 2013 that consultants said would boost its annual sales by more than $100 million. McKinsey recommended ways Purdue could better target what it described as “higher value” prescribers and take other steps to “Turbocharge Purdue’s Sales Engine.”

Stamford, Conn.-based Purdue pleaded guilty in November to three felonies, including paying illegal kickbacks and deceiving drug-enforcement officials. The drugmaker filed for chapter 11 protection in 2019 to address thousands of opioid-related lawsuits brought against it. Purdue said in a lawsuit filed last week against its insurers that creditors have asserted hundreds of thousands of claims in the bankruptcy case and collectively seek trillions of dollars in damages.

McKinsey also advised other opioid makers on sales initiatives. The firm’s work for

came up in a 2019 trial in a case brought by Oklahoma against the drug company for contributing to the opioid crisis in the state through aggressive marketing of prescription painkillers. The trial ended with a $572 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson, which was later reduced to $465 million and is still on appeal.

The vast majority of the money McKinsey will pay in the settlement will be divided among the participating states, with $15 million going to the National Association of Attorneys General to reimburse it for costs incurred in the investigation, one of the people familiar with the deal said.

The settlement also includes some nonmonetary provisions, like requiring McKinsey to create a repository of documents related to its work for opioid makers, the person said.

The holdout states include Nevada, which said Wednesday night that its investigation into the consulting giant continues “and we are conversing with McKinsey about our concerns.”

Purdue has been negotiating with creditors, which include states, since filing for bankruptcy, but finalizing a deal has been slowed by demands from some states that the company’s owners, members of the Sackler family, contribute more than the $3 billion they have agreed to.

States have been keenly focused on ensuring any settlement money from the opioid litigation goes toward helping alleviate the impact of the crisis, including through beefing up treatment programs and helping overstretched law enforcement. The states are looking to avoid the outcome of the 1990s tobacco litigation, when a $206 billion settlement was often spent to fill state budget holes. The McKinsey settlement documents say the money is intended for abatement, the person familiar with the deal said, though state laws differ widely on how settlement funds can be earmarked.

Marshawn Lynch’s broken chair and other virtual Pro Bowl moments

The Pro Bowl may not be happening in the usual fashion this year due to COVID-19 concerns, but the virtual Pro Bowl is already delivering some big plays.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, controlling the NFC in the first quarter, faced a difficult situation. Defensive stops by the AFC, controlled by Deshaun Watson, had put his team in a fourth-and-13 hole. Murray kept cool under pressure, however, and delivered a strike to (virtual) Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson that kept the drive alive. He’d follow up shortly afterwards with a Dalvin Cook touchdown.

In the third quarter, Jamal Adams called a timeout — not for any particular strategic reason, but to put his virtual self in the game, to much hilarity among his teammates and opponents.

In the fourth, Marshawn Lynch pulled off a big INT … and broke his chair celebrating it.

Lulu Wang Short Film for Chinese New Year Shot on Apple iPhone 12 Pro

Apple tapped director Lulu Wang to showcase the cinematic features of the tech company’s latest iPhone.

Wang, who wrote and directed 2019 feature film “The Farewell,” directed a new short for Apple in celebration of Chinese New Year, “Nian,” which puts a fresh twist on a well-known Chinese folktale. (Watch above or at this link.) The 11-minute film was directed by Wang and her team from “The Farewell” and shot on an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apple, which just reported a blowout holiday 2020 quarter with a record $65.6 billion in iPhone sales, has touted the iPhone 12 Pro models as the best smartphone it’s ever made for filmmakers. They’re the first iPhones that can record HDR video in Dolby Vision, as well as provide the ability to edit 4K video at up to 60 frames per second directly on the phone. During the launch event last fall, Apple showed a 60-second film shot in HDR video with Dolby Vision on an iPhone 12 Pro by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki (watch at this link.)

With the release of the iPhone 12, Apple sales in Greater China soared to an all-time high of $21.3 billion for December 2020 quarter — and with the promotional short “Nian,” Apple’s fourth annual Chinese New York film, the tech giant wants to keep the momentum going.

Wang and her crew worked on “Nian” remotely in the U.S. with a mirror crew on the ground in China because of COVID travel restrictions. The team used the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s Dolby Vision, low-light, ultra-wide lens, telephoto lens, stabilization and time-lapse features. The production featured hard-to-shoot night scenes and scenes set inside a cave, where space and lighting were limited.

“Nian” tells the story of a brave young girl’s determination to find — and confront — the widely feared Nian beast. When she comes face to face with him, she discovers that Nian is not at all terrifying and the two strike up a beautiful friendship based on acceptance.

“It’s really exciting that we have this opportunity to retell this ancient story, to capture these incredibly cinematic images with the iPhone, this very versatile device,” Wang said in a behind-the-scenes feature accompanying the film. She said the “Nian” team had “a lot of fun just trying to figure out where else can we stick the phone so we can get angles and perspectives that are just a little bit more unique.”

“We thought, ‘Oh, why don’t we just put the phone inside of the Nian’s mouth?’ I think the size of it allows us to get all kinds of cool, specialty shots that would be much harder to get with the traditional camera,” Wang said.

Wang, whose parents emigrated from China to the U.S. when she was 6, added, “As a child, my parents wanted me to go further than they have ever gone. And yet there’s also this fear that I was going into the unknown, and so I wanted to bring that theme into this film.”

“Nian” was produced by Iconoclast in association with Apple ad agency TBWAMedia Arts Lab (Shanghai). The film features an original score by Alex Weston.

Apple’s previous films marking the Chinese New Year are “Daughter” (2020), “The Bucket” (2019) and “Three Minutes” (2018).

China’s Love of TikTok-Style Apps Powers $5 Billion IPO

Kuaishou Technology has its eyes on the world’s biggest initial public offering in more than a year, seeking to raise about $5 billion from a Hong Kong share sale as short-video and live-streaming apps surge in popularity in China.

Kuaishou—which competes with ByteDance Ltd., the rival Chinese company behind TikTok and its sister app Douyin—started taking investor orders Monday. With the offering, which could value it at more than $60 billion, Kuaishou is joining a string of tech companies from China that have listed in Hong Kong.

Kuaishou, which means “fast hand” in Chinese, is backed by Tencent Holdings Ltd. It was co-founded by Su Hua and Cheng Yixiao, software engineers who previously worked for Google China and Hewlett Packard , respectively.

Both Kuaishou and ByteDance have capitalized on growing demand from younger Chinese people to watch and record short videos on their smartphones. Its namesake short-video platform is the world’s second-largest, according to data cited in its prospectus, and there were 305 million average daily active users of its apps and mini-programs in China for the nine months as of September.

With a minimum deal size of $4.95 billion, the IPO would be the largest in the world since late 2019, when state-controlled Saudi Arabian Oil Co., commonly known as Aramco, raised $29.4 billion, Dealogic figures show.

Video: Microsoft takes shots at Apple’s MacBook Pro in new ad for Surface Pro 7

Microsoft is ramping up its marketing efforts against Apple’s Mac lineup. As first spotted by MS Power User, the company has published a new ad for its Surface Pro 7 on YouTube, touting that it’s the “better choice” when compared to Apple’s MacBook Pro.

The video compares the Surface Pro 7 directly against the MacBook Pro, offering hands on time with both devices. Notably, Microsoft says that this is the $1299 MacBook Pro, but you can clearly tell that it does not feature a physical Esc key. This means the model shown in the video is not the newest MacBook Pro, and it’s powered by Intel rather than Apple Silicon inside.

The video highlights that the Surface Pro 7 features a full touch screen, where as the MacBook Pro only features a “little bar” with touch support, in reference to the Touch Bar. It also showcases that the Surface Pro 7 has a detachable keyboard, while you’re just “stuck with what you’ve got” with a MacBook Pro.

The description for the video touts that the Surface Pro 7 offers the versatility of “both a tablet and a laptop.”

The base configuration offers 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. The price increases to $2,299.99 if you want 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM.

On the flip side, the MacBook Pro starts at $1299 for Apple’s M1 processor, 8GB of unified memory, and 256GB of storage. For $2,299, you can get 2TB of SSD storage and 16GB of unified memory.
