Oklahoma authorities arrest Alysia Adams in connection to Athena Brownfield disappearance

Special Agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) on Thursday arrested Alysia Adams, 30, on two counts of child neglect in connection with the Tuesday disappearance of 4-year-old Athena Brownfield.

OSBI announced the arrest on Thursday afternoon, when Adams was booked into the Grady County Sheriff’s Office. Athena and her sister were in Adams’ and her husband’s care at the time of her disappearance, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The search for Athena continues. The OSBI is following every tip that is received, which are coming in from Oklahoma, as well as other states. In an effort to find clues as to Athena’s whereabouts, the trash service in Cyril [was searched],” OSBI said in a Thursday press release. “Additionally, analysts are reviewing surveillance video from around Cyril and seeking other evidence that can help locate Athena.”

Authorities initially reported Athena missing on Tuesday afternoon after a postal carrier found her 5-year-old sister wandering around alone on Nebraska Avenue in Cyril around 2 p.m.

Brownfield was reported missing on Tuesday, but investigators say she may have disappeared as early as Jan. 6.

The postal carrier knew the 5-year-old girl “wasn’t where she was supposed to be and notified police,” at which point law enforcement realized that Athena was missing, said OSBI public information officer Brook Arbeitman during a Wednesday press conference posted to Facebook.

A Caddo County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Thursday told FOX 25 Oklahoma City, however, that the girl may have disappeared as early as Jan. 6.

The search for the 4-year-old continues despite Adams being arrested.

Oklahoma death row inmate’s last words before execution: ‘My conscience is clear’

Scott James Eizember, a 62-year-old man who murdered an elderly couple 19 years ago, was executed by lethal injection in Oklahoma on Thursday.

“I’m at peace,” Eizember said with an intravenous line in his arm, according to the Associated Press. “My conscience is clear, completely. I love my children.”

Eizember received his last meal at 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The lethal drugs started flowing at 10:01 a.m. on Thursday and he was declared dead at 10:15.

As the execution began, Eizember could be seen talking to his spiritual adviser, Rev. Jeffrey Hood, who the Oklahoma Department of Corrections initially barred from the death chamber due to his history of anti-death penalty activism and an arrest, but was allowed in after the victims’ family requested it.

At one point, Eizember lifted his head and mouthed, “I love you,” toward his daughter and attorneys.

He was convicted of murdering an elderly couple – 76-year-old AJ Cantrell and 70-year-old Patsy Cantrell – on Oct. 18, 2003.

Eizember broke into their home to surveil his ex-girlfriend, Kathryn Smith, who lived across the street. When the Cantrells came home, Eizember shot and killed Patsy then bludgeoned AJ to death with the gun, prosecutors said at trial.

After killing the Cantrells, he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and attacked both her son and mother before fleeing the scene in a stolen vehicle.

Eizember was on the run for months until he was shot by a man who he attempted to hold hostage in Texas.

Johnny Melton, the couple’s nephew, said that the past two decades have been “absolutely excruciating.”

“There is no closure today, but a page has been turned and a fresh chapter in our lives has begun. After living this nightmare, I must say that 20 years is too long for justice to be served,” Melton said after the execution.

“We absolutely want to get it right and we absolutely want to ensure that everyone’s rights are protected, but the process is much too slow.”

Eizember’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday.

Oklahoma police ‘actively looking’ for missing 4-year-old Athena Brownfield with infrared helicopters, boats

A 4-year-old girl from Cyril, Oklahoma, is still missing after she disappeared earlier this week and authorities are asking for the public to assist in the investigation.

Athena Brownfield has been missing since last Tuesday, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) have deployed infrared helicopters, boats, four-wheelers, and personnel on the ground to search the nearby area in an effort to locate her, according to the OHP Trooper Eric Foster.

“We’ve been in the air in helicopters with infrared, on the ground, around town there have been a lot of grid searches on foot and on four-wheelers, things like that,” Foster said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, FOX 25 reported. “Our Emergency Response Team (ERT), which is specially trained to go on foot in search of people and things, are out in coordination with civilians who have come and wanted to volunteer their time and effort.”

The bureau’s PIO Brook Arbeitman confirmed this information, adding: “We are still very actively looking for her using all of our tools. We are finding things that we hope might give us clues as to where she is, but we are still actively looking for her.”

Athena Brownfield, 4, has been missing since at least Tuesday and authorities are continuing to search for her.

MISSING MADALINA COJOCARI SEARCH EXPANDS IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA: REPORT

Authorities also utilized Oklahoma Department of Corrections dogs to help search, per the report.

“This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and right now our top priority is locating her. And sorting out who is responsible will come next. We need to find this little girl,” Arbeitman said. “She’s on her own in the elements. So, is that endangered? Yeah. But is she the victim of physical harm? That’s yet to be determined.”

This ground search continued all Wednesday but concluded after volunteers searched “the entire town,” Arbeitman said.

“Today at 4 p.m., the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) Emergency Response Team (ERT) concluded a grid search with local volunteers. Those volunteers have been released after searching the entire town, every known vacant house and local waterways,” OSBI added in a separate statement Wednesday afternoon.

It added: “Currently, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) has search dogs in the area and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBNDD) flew their drones over the community.”

Athena was reported missing around 2 p.m. Tuesday after a postal worker found her 5-year-old sister alone near their residence in Cyril, which is located about 70 miles (113 km) southwest of Oklahoma City.

The older girl was described as frightened but not needing medical care.

CALIFORNIA AUTHORITIES SAY FINDING MISSING 5-YEAR-OLD IS ‘TOP PRIORITY’ AS SEARCH RESUMES WEDNESDAY MORNING

It is not clear how long she had been missing before her disappearance was reported.

“We’re still working on putting together an exact timeline,” Arbeitman said.

Details regarding the home where the girls were staying are also not immediately clear and the whereabouts of the girls’ parents or guardians at the time of Athena’s disappearance are not known.

“That’s part of the ongoing investigation,” Arbeitman said Wednesday morning when asked about who was supposed to be watching the girls, according to KOCO News.

The 5-year-old has been placed in protective custody.

BODY FOUND BURIED IN DETROIT IDENTIFIED AS MISSING WOMAN

Many details about the 4-year-old, who authorities initially said was 3 but have since corrected, are not known. Subsequently, an Amber Alert has not been issued as her disappearance does not meet specific guidelines, Foster said.

“There’s specific guidelines and things that we have to follow,” he explained. “Not every part of that guideline came into play in this. So the next best thing that we could do was issue a Missing and Endangered notification that went out in a 15-mile radius from where she went missing.”

Law enforcement officials are continuing to conduct interviews and are reviewing surveillance videos in the area. They are also asking anyone with doorbell cameras or footage of the area near the 200 block of West Nebraska to turn over their resources to help in these efforts.

“The entire law enforcement community assisting with locating Athena appreciates local volunteers, restaurants, churches and all the tips that have been phoned in,” the OSBI said.

Residents are encouraged to search their own property for Athena.

Fox News Digital is aware of social media posts regarding Athena’s parents or details surrounding her living situation but the OSBI is advising people and outlets not to share unconfirmed details as it could hinder the investigation.

Anyone with information about Athena Brownfield’s disappearance is asked to contact the Cyril Police Department directly at (580) 464-2216, the OSBI tip line at 800-522-8017 or email tips@osbi.ok.gov

Tornado threat ramps up as storm damage reported in Oklahoma and Texas and blizzard conditions mount in the northern Plains

Severe storms – with reports of at least one tornado and damaging winds – are raking parts of Oklahoma and Texas, leaving a trail of damage Tuesday morning and threatening more as blizzard conditions build across several states farther north.

This is all part of a giant winter storm system pushing into the central US after walloping the West over the weekend. About 25 million people from Texas to Mississippi are under threat of severe storms Tuesday, including tornadoes. And about 15 million people – largely in the north-central US – are under winter-weather warnings or advisories Tuesday morning, with power outages a key concern.

Two tornado watches are in effect: One for parts of the Dallas area and southern Oklahoma until 11 a.m. CT; and one for for parts of Arkansas, southeastern Oklahoma and eastern Texas until 5 p.m. CT.

A line of severe storms capable of producing tornadoes and large hail was hitting the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex in the midmorning.

Sirens rang out around 9:30 a.m. ET at Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport. “We are in the midst of a tornado warning here on the western side of the Dallas-Fort Worth area,” CNN’s Ed Lavandera said from the airport, “where essentially everything has come to a halt here (as) this really strong line of severe storms is starting to make its way through North Texas.”

Damage on Tuesday morning includes:

• Wayne, Oklahoma: A suspected tornado in that town left “buildings wiped off of their foundation (and) trees snapped over like twigs” early Tuesday, CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam said. There are no reported injuries, but Wayne has no power, and family structures, outbuildings and barns are damaged, according to McClain County Emergency Management.

• Outside Dallas: Wind damage has been reported Tuesday morning west of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, including tractor-trailers being blown over near the towns of Millsap and Decatur, and barns suffering damage near the town of Jacksboro, the National Weather Service said.

More severe storms capable of tornadoes are expected Tuesday and Wednesday in the Gulf Coast region as the complex snow-or-rain system sweeps through the central US from north to south.

Across the central and northern Plains and Upper Midwest, blowing snow and/or freezing rain could snarl travel and threaten power outages into Thursday.

Here’s what different regions can expect in the coming days:

• An “enhanced risk” for severe storms Tuesday stretches from eastern Texas to northern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi, with tornadoes, large hail and damaging straight line winds possible.

• Blizzard conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday for parts of the central and northern Plains, with snow at times expected to fall at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour amid powerful 40 mph winds.

• The greatest flash flooding threat will be Tuesday into Wednesday from the lower Mississippi Valley into the central Gulf Coast, Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians.

• Freezing rain and sleet will be possible through Wednesday in the Upper Midwest.

The storm, which first hit the Western US with much-needed snow and rain, resulted in winter storm alerts from the Canadian border to Mexico’s border with New Mexico.

In Denver, up to 5 inches of snow are expected Tuesday, with 50 mph wind gusts possible.

Blizzard warnings extended Tuesday from parts of Montana and Wyoming into northeastern Colorado, western Nebraska and South Dakota, where harsh, life-threatening conditions are expected.

Snowfall through Wednesday morning generally could be 10 to 18 inches in the central and northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Some areas inside the blizzard warning zones – particularly western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming and northwestern Nebraska – could get as many as 24 inches of snow, with winds strong enough to knock down tree limbs and cause power outages, the Weather Prediction Center said.

“We’re not expecting a quick burst of snowfall here,” Brandon Wills, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, Wyoming, said Monday evening. Snow is “going to accumulate the highest in the northern Nebraska panhandle – and it’s going to be blowing around like crazy because of the strong winds that we’re going to have as well,” he said.

Interstates in South Dakota could become impassable amid the blizzard conditions, resulting in roadway closures across the state, the South Dakota Department of Transportation warned Monday.

Ice storm warnings were issued for parts of eastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and western Iowa. Up to two-tenths of an inch of ice could accumulate in some of these areas, forecasters said.

In Anchorage, Alaska, an “unprecedented amount of snowfall” has led to schools being closed for four days and on Monday shut down the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University.

“The snowstorms that have hit Anchorage over the last week are historic in nature, bringing anywhere between 30-45 inches of snow to our city,” said Hans Rodvik, a spokesperson for the Anchorage mayor’s office, said Monday in a statement to CNN.

Meanwhile, the southern end of the storm threatens to bring tornadoes.

A tornado watch is in effect Tuesday morning for parts of Texas and southern Oklahoma until 11 a.m. CT. The main threats are tornadoes, hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph.

An alert for enhanced risk of severe weather – level 3 of 5 – was issued Tuesday for eastern Texas and the lower Mississippi River Valley, with the main threats including powerful tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail. Baton Rouge, Shreveport, and Lafayette, Louisiana, are part of the threatened area, as is Jackson, Mississippi.

“My main concern with the tornadoes is going to be after dark,” CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said Tuesday. “We have very short days this time of year, so 5 or 6 o’clock, it’s going to be dark out there. Spotters aren’t as accurate when it is dark. Tornado warnings are a little bit slow; if you’re sleeping, you may not get them. So, that’s the real danger with this storm.”

A zone of slight risk – level 2 of 5 – encircled that area, stretching from eastern Texas and southern Oklahoma to southern Arkansas and much of the rest of Louisiana and central Mississippi. That includes Dallas and New Orleans.

Tuesday also brings a slight risk of excessive rainfall in parts of Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, with 2 to 4 inches of rain and flash flooding possible, the Weather Prediction Center said.

On Wednesday, the threat for severe weather is largely focused on the Gulf Coast, with tornadoes and damaging winds possible over parts of southern Louisiana, Mississippi, southwest Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle, the Storm Prediction Center said.
