Los Angeles Rams top Cincinnati Bengals to win Super Bowl after WR Odell Beckham Jr. (knee) exits

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Los Angeles Rams receiver Odell Beckham Jr. suffered an injury to his left knee on a noncontact play with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter of Super Bowl LVI Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals and did not return.

“We don’t know yet, we’re gonna wait to hear,” Beckham told CBS Sports after the game when asked about the extent of the injury.

Beckham was running toward the right side of the field on a crossing route, but it appeared as though his left foot got caught in the turf. He dropped a pass thrown by quarterback Matthew Stafford and clutched his left leg as he fell to the turf.

Beckham took off his helmet while on the ground and was soon looked at by athletic trainers on the field before being helped off. He was looked at briefly in the medical tent on the Rams’ sideline before heading to the locker room.

He was listed as questionable to return at halftime. With less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Rams officially downgraded Beckham to out.

The Rams offense struggled after losing Beckham, who had two receptions for 52 yards and scored the first touchdown of the game when he beat Mike Hilton in the right corner of the end zone for a 17-yard score. But Stafford ultimately engineered the winning drive in the fourth quarter of Los Angeles’ 23-20 victory.

After the game, Beckham tweeted: “THIS WAS EXACTLY GODS PLAN.”

“This is everything I’ve ever dreamed of, you know,” Beckham told CBS Sports. “And there was a moment I was in the back room and they told me I was done, I couldn’t play. And I had to come back out there and be a part of this because it’s so much bigger than myself. And these boys pulled through and made it happen.”

Rams veteran receiver Robert Woods, who has been out since November with a torn ACL, said he comforted Beckham at halftime.

“Yeah I actually spent some time with him in the locker room before coming out after halftime and just, really just held him,” Woods said. “It’s tough. He’s dealt with a lot I would say his whole career … but just being able to hold him and say ‘I’m right with you.’ I’ll be here every step. Every rehab day. … He’s a competitor I know he’ll be back even stronger and hopefully he’s back with us.”

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Stafford was 2-of-6 for 25 yards and an interception in the first half after the Beckham injury. He started 10-of-12 for 140 yards and two touchdowns, one to Beckham.

Beckham was signed by the Rams after being released by the Cleveland Browns at midseason. After a slow start to his Rams career, Beckham has delivered in the postseason. In three NFC playoff games, he had 19 catches on 23 targets for 236 yards and a touchdown, with a long of 31 yards. He was second only to Cooper Kupp in receptions and yards.

Beckham tore his left ACL in 2020 while with the Browns. He’s scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next month.

Packers’ Davante Adams reveals he shot down Odell Beckham Jr’s initial jersey swap ask

Davante Adams revealed the terse message he had for Odell Beckham Jr. when the wide receiver asked whether the two could exchange jerseys after the Green Bay Packers play the Los Angeles Rams.

Adams was speaking to Michael Irvin in an interview on NFL Network when he told the Pro Football Hall of Famer how the conversation went. Beckham signed with the Rams after it was rumored he had been interested in joining the Packers. Los Angeles reportedly offered Beckham more money which was the deciding factor.

It was all business for Adams when the two were talking about a jersey swap after their Sunday matchup.

“We did talk two days ago, he said he needed a jersey after the game. I told him ‘go get a Cooper Kupp jersey’ since that’s obviously his guy and that’s who he wanted to be with,” Adams told Irvin.

“That’s my guy, man. I love Odell. I think he would’ve been a great fit here but I wish nothing but the best for him.”

Odell Beckham has quiet night in Rams’ loss: “It just wasn’t our night”

Getty Images

Rams receiver Odell Beckham‘s much-hyped signing arrival did not live up to the hype in his first game on Monday night.

Beckham managed just two catches for 18 yards as the Rams played their worst game of the season in a 31-10 loss to the 49ers.

“They played better than us in all phases of the game,” Beckham said afterward. “They just out-played us. . . . It just wasn’t our night. There’s no way around it, it just wasn’t our night. All three phases of the game.”

Beckham said he knows he has a lot of work to do with the Rams now on their bye week, and the next game against the Packers.

“Lick your wounds and get ready for one of the best teams in the NFL, Green Bay at Lambeau,” Beckham said.

The Rams will hope Beckham can produce a lot more than two catches for 18 yards in that game.

49ers vs. Rams score: Deebo Samuel scores twice as San Francisco crushes L.A. to spoil Odell Beckham’s debut

For the first time in 393 days, the San Francisco 49ers have won a game at home. This latest victory comes in the form of a 31-10 rout against the Los Angeles Rams on “Monday Night Football.” Out of the gate, San Francisco was able to impose its will on the Rams and take advantage of their mistakes.

On the opening drive of the game, an errant pass from Matthew Stafford intended for Odell Beckham Jr. was picked off by safety Jimmie Ward. That handed the ball to the San Francisco offense which would drive 93 yards down the field to find the end zone, capping off an unrelenting drive that drained roughly 11 minutes off the clock over 18 plays. On the very next defensive possession, Ward would again pick off Stafford, this time taking a bobbled ball that fell out of the arms of Tyler Higbee 27 yards down the field for a touchdown.

That immediately put L.A. in a 14-0 hole, which ultimately proved to be insurmountable. Sean McVay’s team was able finally to reach the end zone on its possession following the pick-six, but that was essentially the biggest punch it would throw on Monday night.

For the second week in a row, Stafford appeared to be out of sync in the offense as he had a number of throws come in off-target. He finished with 243 yards passing, a touchdown, and those two picks while completing just 26 of his 41 attempts. It also didn’t help that some of his key receivers also had a case of the drops at various points throughout the evening.

As for the Niners, a large part of their victory was their success on the ground. As a team, they ran the ball 44 times for 156 yards. Meanwhile, Jimmy Garoppolo began the game completing 12 straight passes and finished with 182 yards and two touchdowns. The star for San Francisco on the offensive side of the ball, however, again was Deebo Samuel, who was a big factor in the running game (new career high in carries) on top of his usual prowess as a pass-catcher. He caught all five of his targets for 97 yards and a touchdown while carrying the ball five times for 36 yards and another score.

To read more about how this game unfolded, check out our takeaways below.

Why the 49ers won

San Francisco played exactly the type of football it wants to play on a weekly basis. It dominated time of possession and nearly doubled up the Rams thanks to an unrelenting ground attack. In the first half, the 49ers did not have a single passing attempt on first down as Kyle Shanahan elected to lean on his running game to not only move the chains but keep the L.A. offense off the field. That plan was apparent pretty early in this game as they ran the ball on 13 times during their opening 18-play drive.

The 49ers also showed off a rare wrinkle to their offense with Samuel coming out of the backfield. He came into this game with just six carries on the season but logged a career-high five attempts on Monday night that he turned around for 36 yards including an 8-yard touchdown. Samuel also had 17 snaps in shift/motion, which tied the second-most in his career (h/t Next Gen Stats).  When San Francisco did opt to pass, Garoppolo remained efficient in the short passing attack while 49ers receivers — particularly Samuel and George Kittle — piled up yards after the catch.

Defensively, the early turnovers were naturally a major swing that helped push the Niners to victory as they directly led to points being put on the board. In the second half, this unit continued to shut down L.A. and forced three three-and-outs right out of the locker room where the Rams only held the ball for a total of 3:22.

Why the Rams lost

It was another off day for this offense. In a similar fashion to their loss to the Titans in Week 9, the Rams committed two early turnovers (one pick-6) that put them in a hole that they couldn’t get themselves out of for the bulk of the game. The first was Stafford seemingly having some miscommunication with Beckham, who was making his Rams debut after signing with the team on Friday. On a broken play, it appeared like Stafford was expecting Beckham to continue moving deep up the middle of the field, but was slowed up for a moment. That threw the timing off on Stafford’s throw and Ward was able to set himself under the ball to make the pick.

While Stafford’s second pick was more the fault of Higbee, who let the ball bounce out of his arms, it was an erratic day for the Rams quarterback. He had a number of throws that were either a tick behind his intended receiver while there were also a few passes that were off by quite a large margin. That rough sledding in the passing game contributed to a miserable day on third down where they would go 3 of 10. L.A. also began pressing a bit too hard once it found itself in that 14-0 hole. That was clear as McVay elected to attempt a fake field goal pass play on fourth-and-8 with Johnny Hecker just prior to the half. That attempt was sniffed out by the 49ers’ special teams unit and they went to break trailing 21-7.

As we noted above, the Rams’ run defense didn’t have much of an answer for the San Fran running game early and struggled to get off the field, particularly in the first half when the 49ers converted all five of their third-down opportunities. On the night, they allowed the offense to average 9 yards per play and score on each of their two red-zone trips, which is hardly a winning formula.

Turning point

While the long touchdown drive following the first interception was impressive, Ward’s pick-6 truly put us on upset alert. That put the Rams in a quick 14-0 hole and had the 49ers riding with all sorts of confidence for the rest of the game. Turnovers have been something this 49ers team has been starving for this season. Coming into Week 10, they had only two interceptions on the year, meaning they matched their season output in a matter of minutes.

Play of the game

On a fourth-and-5 play in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Garoppolo and Samuel put the dagger in the Rams with a 40-yard touchdown to go up 31-7. Garoppolo made a nice throw into the second level and in between three Rams defenders to hit Samuel over the middle. From there, the wide receiver was able to shed a couple of would-be tacklers — as he’d done for most of the night — and scamper to the end zone.

What’s next

From here, the 49ers will head down to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars, who are fresh off a Week 10 loss to the Colts. Meanwhile, the Rams enter their bye week and do some self-scouting to try to snap their two-game losing streak when they face the Packers in Week 12.

Odell Beckham Jr. agrees to contract with Los Angeles Rams

Odell Beckham Jr. has agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced.

The free-agent wide receiver joins a high-powered offense led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and adds to a depth chart at the position that already includes Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Van Jefferson.

Beckham became a free agent when he cleared waivers on Tuesday after being released by the Cleveland Browns.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks were among the other teams Beckham considered this week, sources had told ESPN.

In Los Angeles, Beckham essentially replaces veteran wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who was released after the trading deadline last week. Jackson signed with the Las Vegas Raiders this week.

Beckham is the second high-profile player added by the Rams this month, after Los Angeles traded for star pass-rusher Von Miller before the deadline last week. Miller welcomed Beckham to Los Angeles on his Instagram Story, posting: “Let’s chase this ring family!!!!”

Beckham was also welcomed to L.A. by Lakers superstar LeBron James, one of his good friends, who tweeted: “Welcome to LA my brother @obj ! It’s GO TIME!!”

The Rams lead the NFL in total offense this season behind a potent passing attack led by Stafford, who is first in the NFL with 2,771 passing yards. Kupp is the team’s No. 1 receiver and leads the NFL in receptions (74), receiving yards (1,019) and touchdown receptions (10).

The Browns excused Beckham from practice last week while the sides negotiated his exit. He had asked to be traded and never developed an on-field connection with Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Beckham essentially forced his release last week when his father shared an 11-minute video on social media — hours before the trade deadline — of plays in which Mayfield didn’t pass him the ball.

The three-time Pro Bowl selection has 17 catches for 232 yards and zero touchdowns in six games this season. Beckham had 1,035 receiving yards in 2019, his first season with Cleveland, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2020. He has passed the 1,000-yard receiving mark five times in his career.

Browns safety John Johnson, who spent the past four seasons with the Rams, was on a Zoom call with Cleveland reporters when the news of Beckham’s signing broke. Johnson wondered how OBJ will fit in L.A.

“They had a good thing going, like a complete offense,” Johnson said. “I don’t know I just feel, like, from being in L.A., I know for a fact the offense runs through Cooper Kupp; even in the run game, the pass game, the screen game, it kind of runs through Cooper Kupp. So obviously, Odell’s a big name and he’s going to want that attention as well. It will be interesting.

“Coach [Sean] McVay, he’s one of the best doing it. He’ll find a way to get it done, but right off the bat, I really wouldn’t want to go there if I were him, but we’ll see how it goes and I wish him the best.”

The Rams have been remarkably successful at managing the egos and needs of their elite players, with McVay assuaging almost all public disenchantment with the organization. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey was considered a potential locker room problem after he forced his way out of Jacksonville, but he has been a model citizen and a clear team leader in Los Angeles since arriving in 2019.

The Rams (7-2) play the San Francisco 49ers (3-5) on Monday night.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Odell Beckham Jr. wants to join postseason contender for remainder of season, sources say

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have officially approved the restructured contract of Odell Beckham Jr. that will allow the star wide receiver to go on waivers Monday and be claimed by 4 p.m. ET the following day, sources told ESPN.

But Beckham does not want to go to just any team, according to sources familiar with his thinking. Beckham wants to spend the rest of this season with a playoff contender and in a winning environment, where he believes he would be happy and productive.

If a team that does not fit this criteria claims Beckham and the $7.25 million remaining on his contract, there could be potential issues for that team, according to a source, although it is unclear exactly what those issues would be.

As it stands, there currently are nine teams with over $7.25 million in salary cap space — the Jaguars, Eagles, Broncos, Seahawks, Panthers, Chargers, Steelers, Bengals and the Washington Football Team.

Should Beckham clear waivers, which multiple team executives said over the weekend is the “likely” outcome, he would be able to sign with any team.

Multiple teams with winning records and established offenses are expected to be interested in Beckham, sources told ESPN. Certain players already have reached out to Beckham, pitching the merits of their organization, according to sources.

If Beckham clears waivers Tuesday, he likely will have a deal in place with a new team at some point next week, according to a source.

Beckham and the Browns reached a settlement on the restructured contract Friday after days of negotiations. The breakup became inevitable this past week when, hours before last Tuesday’s trade deadline, Beckham’s father shared a video on social media showing times when Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t throw him the ball.

The Browns excused Beckham from practice this past week while the sides negotiated his exit from the team, which was finalized on Friday — his 29th birthday. Browns general manager Andrew Berry called situation “unfortunate but acknowledged “there are some situations in the NFL where things just don’t quite work out.”

If Beckham is seeking immediate revenge against his former team, he could choose to sign with the Patriots, who host the Browns next Sunday in Week 10.

Beckham had 17 catches for 232 yards and zero touchdowns in six games this season. He had only two 100-yard games in 29 games since joining Cleveland in the 2019 blockbuster trade with the New York Giants.

The three-time Pro Bowler had 1,035 receiving yards in his first season with Cleveland, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2020 and was out when the Browns ended a long playoff drought and won their first playoff game in 26 years.

Browns plan to release Odell Beckham Jr. on Friday

USA TODAY Sports

The key word in this is “plan,” because plans can always change. As Thursday night comes to a conclusion, however, we’re told that the Browns currently plan to release receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on Friday.

The move is expected to be accompanied by a revised contract that reduces the team’s obligation to pay Beckham, if he’s not claimed on waivers and becomes eligible for the balance of his salary termination pay. The challenge for Beckham becomes not making the reduced salary so low that someone claims the contract on waivers.

If/when he clears waivers, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent, able to sign with any team.

Because he was on the Cleveland roster as of Tuesday, he’ll get paid by the Browns for this week. As soon as next week, he could be on a new team.

The week began with the Browns hoping to get Beckham more involved in the offense. On Tuesday, an apparently orchestrated social-media campaign began, with his father posting a video of the various instances when Beckham was open and quarterback Baker Mayfield to get him the ball. Then, Cleveland icon Lebron James tweeted “#FreeOBJ.” Trade talks with the Saints went nowhere.

It became obvious on Wednesday that Beckham won’t play again for the Browns. Coach Kevin Stefanski reportedly told the team that Beckham no longer would be part of it, and Stefanski didn’t deny it when asked whether the report was true. The team excused Beckham from practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

Latest On Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr.

The Odell Beckham Jr. saga in Cleveland continues to heat up. After the wideout sat out practice again on Thursday, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com writes that OBJ has likely requested his release.

As Cabot writes, it sounds like comments from the receiver’s dad ruffled some feathers within the Browns organization, with wideout Rashard Higgins making it clear that he’d never criticize his quarterback. Odell Beckham Sr. continued to fan the flames today when he onc3 again cited a video that show Baker Mayfield‘s inability to connect with his well-paid wideout. We still haven’t heard from Beckham Jr. regarding the social media shenanigans, but the silence seems to be pretty clear.

Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt indicated that he’s ready to move on from the current distraction, and it sounds like he’s already preparing for an offense without OBJ.

“We are going to go in and plan for the guys who are going to be there at this point,” Van Pelt said (via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com). “That is our focus.

“As of now, again, we are just getting ready for today’s practice. We will see where that goes from here. Again, just getting the guys ready who are here in the building today to go play on Sunday.”

Beckham’s contract is the main complication surrounding a divorce. The wideout is still owed $8MM this season, and there’s a limited number of teams with the required cap space to claim the player off waivers. Cabot suggests that the two sides could work on a creative agreement that would see OBJ give up a chunk of his owed money.

Joel Bitonio: We would welcome back Odell Beckham Jr. with open arms

Getty Images

The Browns’ standoff with receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has entered its second day, with Beckham “excused” from practice and away from the team.

But according to USA TODAY Sports’ Josina Anderson, Beckham is waiting and willing to rejoin Cleveland whenever he’s told to do so.

That’s part of what makes this situation different  than what’s happening with quarterback Deshaun Watson in Houston — Watson welcomes the opportunity to be placed on paid leave. Beckham wants to play.

As for his current teammates, left guard Joel Bitonio said in his Thursday press conference that he thinks Beckham would be welcomed back into the Browns’ facility.

“We think he’s a great player when he’s on the field, but we don’t know what the situation is. We probably know as much as you guys know,” Bitonio said, via Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal. “But if he wants to come back and be part of the team, I’m sure we’d welcome him with open arms.”

Bitonio added that Cleveland’s players really don’t know much about what’s going on between Beckham and Cleveland’s front office.

“We’re trying to go 1-0 this week, so it’s kind of a need-to-know basis,” Bitonio said. “I don’t think the guys in the locker room need to know exactly what’s going on, I think they’re still trying to figure it out.”

Beckham has been a total non-factor in Cleveland’s offense since returning from a torn ACL. He’s caught 17 passes for 232 yards in six games. He’s also taken a pair of carries for 14 yards with a touchdown.

He had only one target in Cleveland’s 15-10 loss to Pittsburgh, making the catch for 6 yards. He also had another pass thrown to him that was wiped off the stat sheet due to a roughing the passer penalty.

Because Beckham forced Cleveland’s hand at the trading deadline, the Browns have little leverage in the situation to prevent Beckham from going to a competitor if he clears waivers. So, they’ll have to figure out whether they would like Beckham on the roster or if cutting him provides enough addition by subtraction that it won’t matter where he goes.
