Cowboys have concerns after meeting with Odell Beckham Jr.

The Dallas Cowboys have concerns after Odell Beckham Jr.’s physical that his recovery from a torn left ACL in the Super Bowl has not progressed enough to ensure he would play before mid-January, a source tells ESPN’s Ed Werder.

There is a possibility that signing Beckham, who is closing out his two-day visit with the Cowboys on Tuesday, would have no benefit until the 2023 season, the source added.

Beckham underwent a physical on Monday, met with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his family, and spent the night with Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs at the Dallas Mavericks’ game against the Phoenix Suns. Asked at halftime what the Cowboys’ chances of signing him were, Beckham told ESPN’s Tim MacMahon with a big smile, “It’s a good possibility.”

Jones remained noncommittal during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday, but did say that Beckham playing this season is “paramount” to a deal possibly getting done without ruling it out altogether.

“It’s a lot different if you play one play or if you played or are available for a week and that week be the Super Bowl week, than if he’s available the next week,” said Jones. “And so everything in between. I would say that’s a point of discussion — a player’s own belief of where he is in becoming ready to play is real big.”

Beckham, who has also visited with the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills, is expected to meet Tuesday with Cowboys’ player leadership council that includes Dak Prescott and 10 other veterans.

According to NFL Players Association figures, the Cowboys have $6.3 million in salary-cap room, which would be enough to add Beckham; however, a multiyear deal would further complicate a dicey salary-cap situation in 2023. The Cowboys have 19 players set to become unrestricted free agents, including key figures like Dalton Schultz, Tony Pollard, Leighton Vander Esch and Donovan Wilson. They can also open up contract-extension talks with CeeDee Lamb and Diggs for the first time.

“I just think this is an opportunity that is rare because of his availability,” Jones added. “But one way or the other, there’s not a failure here. I’m talking about the actual signing or not signing. There’s not disappointment here.

“If this thing works, it will improve this team now. It will improve it this year. If we don’t have that, then we’re in a positive situation as well. It has to improve us now. You know that’s a pretty tall order. And it has to improve us in a way that makes sense for us as we look not only this year but as it impacts the years to come relative to the financial aspect of it.”

Odell Beckham Jr. removed from Miami flight after refusing to comply with safety protocol, police say

CNN
 —

NFL free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was removed from a Los Angeles-bound American Airlines flight Sunday morning at Miami International Airport after refusing to comply with safety protocol, according to a statement from the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Officers were notified of a medical emergency on an American Airlines flight around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The flight crew grew concerned for a passenger – identified by police as Beckham – as they tried to wake him to fasten his seat belt, according to a statement from Miami police.

“He appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness, prior to their departure,” the police statement read. “Fearing that Mr. Beckham was seriously ill, and that his condition would worsen through the expected 5 hour flight, the attendants called for police and fire rescue.”

When officers arrived, they asked Beckham to exit the aircraft several times, and he refused, according to the statement. The aircraft was deplaned, at which point officers asked Beckham to exit the plane and he did so without incident, the statement read.

“American Airlines flight 1228, with service from Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX), returned to the gate before takeoff due to a customer failing to follow crew member instructions and refusing to fasten their seatbelt (sic). The customer was removed, and the flight re-departed at 10:54 a.m. local time,” American Airlines said in a statement obtained by CNN.

Daniel Davillier, Beckham’s attorney, released a statement saying his client boarded the flight that morning without any problems. The flight had been delayed and Beckham fell asleep with his blanket over his head – a normal practice of his during long flights, Davillier said.

“He was awakened and told that the plane was back at the gate and that he needed to get off the plane because he did not put his seatbelt on when asked,” Davillier’s statement read, adding that Beckham was told it was too late to fasten the belt and he’d either need to get off the plane or everyone would have to deplane.

“The overzealous flight attendant refused to simply allow Mr. Beckham to fasten his seatbelt and proceed with the flight and instead immediately removed everyone from the plane,” Davillier said. “At no time was Mr. Beckham disruptive or combative.”

Davillier called the incident “completely unnecessary.”

“Sleeping on a plane should not be a cause for removal from a flight,” the attorney said. “If they could wake him up when the flight returned to the gate, then they could have done the same thing and woken him up to ask him to put on his seatbelt.”

No charges have been filed in the incident and after being escorted by officers to the terminal’s non-secure area Sunday morning, Beckham then “made other arrangements,” police say.

Beckham is currently a free agent as he continues to recover from surgery to repair a knee injury suffered in Super Bowl LVI as a member of the Los Angeles Rams in February. Beckham had a touchdown catch in the Rams’ winning effort over the Cincinnati Bengals in that game.

Beckham was spotted in Miami sitting courtside at the Miami Heat-Washington Wizards game Wednesday night, according to video posted on the NBA’s official Twitter account.

Odell Beckham Jr. removed from flight, causes delay at Miami airport after incident with crew, per police

Days before the official start of his in-season free agency tour, Odell Beckham Jr. has been grounded, literally. Set to travel from Miami to Los Angeles, the wide receiver was removed from an American Airlines flight on Sunday after an incident with the flight crew, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department:

At approximately 9:30 a.m., officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department were dispatched to a medical emergency at an American Airlines flight. The flight crew was concerned for a passenger (Mr. Odell Beckham), as they tried to wake him to fasten his seat belt, he appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness, prior to their departure. Fearing that Mr. Beckham was seriously ill, and that his condition would worsen through the expected 5 hour flight, the attendants called for police and fire rescue. Upon the officers arrival, the flight crew asked Mr. Beckham several times to exit the aircraft, which he refused. The aircraft was deplaned, at which time Mr. Beckham was asked by the officers to exit the plane, and did so without incident. Mr. Beckham was escorted to the non-secure area of the terminal by the officers where he made other arrangements.

Officers were initially dispatched to the airport for a “medical emergency,” with Beckham allegedly appearing to “come in and out of consciousness” while seated on the plane before the scheduled takeoff. Eventually, the aircraft was deplaned, and Beckham was escorted off — and through the airport — without incident.

The American Airlines crew was “concerned for … Beckham as they tried to wake him to fasten his seat belt,” the police said. “Fearing that Mr. Beckham was seriously ill, and that his condition would worsen through the expected five-hour flight, the attendants called for police and fire rescue.” Upon arrival, the officers allegedly asked Beckham several times to exit the plane, and the wide receiver refused. After all the other passengers were deplaned, however, Beckham agreed to exit and was seen walking with a police escort out of the gate area and into the terminal, “where he made other arrangements.”

Beckham was not officially cited or detained as part of the incident. Several people alleging to be on his flight, however, complained on social media about his behavior causing a delay. American Airlines released the following statement: “Flight 1228, with service from Miami to Los Angeles, returned to the gate before takeoff due to a customer failing to follow crew member instructions and refusing to fasten their seatbelt. The customer was removed and the flight re-departed at 10:54 a.m. local time,” roughly an hour and a half after its scheduled takeoff.

Beckham has only indirectly addressed the events via Twitter, tweeting Sunday: “Never in my life have I experienced what just happened to me … I’ve seen it all.” His attorney, Daniel Davillier, has since downplayed Beckham’s role in the incident:

Earlier today, Odell Beckham Jr. boarded a morning flight in Miami without any problems. The flight was delayed after boarding and prior to takeoff. Mr. Beckham fell asleep with his blanket over his head, which is his normal practice for long flights. He was awaken [sic] and told that the plane was back at the gate and that he needed to get off the plane because he did not put his seatbelt on when asked. He responded that he was asleep, and that he would put his seatbelt on at that time. He was informed that it was too late, and that either he would have to get off the plane or everyone would have to deplane.

The overzealous flight attendant insisted on removing everyone from the plane instead of simply allowing Mr. Beckham to fasten his seatbelt and proceed with the flight. At no time was Mr. Beckham disruptive or combative. He was willing to comply with the seatbelt requirement, but the flight attendant wanted to prove that he had the authority to have Mr. Beckham removed from the flight. The airline proceeded to send Mr. Beckham’s luggage to Los Angeles without him.

That incident was unnecessary. Sleeping on a plane should not be a cause for removal from a flight.

The off-field controversy comes just days ahead of his scheduled visit with the Cowboys, who have been publicly courting his services as he plans a return to the field. The former Rams standout, who’s yet to play in 2022 due to a torn ACL suffered in February, is also scheduled to visit the Giants and Bills in the near future.

Odell Beckham Jr. deal expected after Thanksgiving

Odell Beckham Jr. is expected to wait until after Thanksgiving to pick a new home, league sources told ESPN, though talks with teams already are underway and offers for the free-agent wide receiver are starting to come in.

Talks are expected to heat up after Thanksgiving, but before he agrees to a deal with any team, Beckham will consider taking a few free-agent visits to get an up-close look at any new prospective home, according to sources.

No team has expressed a greater interest in Beckham than the Dallas Cowboys. From team owner and general manager Jerry Jones to players such as Micah Parsons, the Cowboys have been almost openly universal in campaigning for Beckham to come to Dallas.

Beckham is expected to be seeking a deal that would pay him similarly on a prorated basis to the deals signed last offseason by fellow wide receivers such as Chris Godwin and Mike Williams, each of whom makes an average of $20 million per year. If Beckham were to play the final quarter of the season at similar prorated pay to Godwin or Williams, he could make about $5 million for the remainder of this season.

Teams believed to be in the mix for Beckham include the Cowboys, New York Giants, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers.

Teams that likely have fallen out of the discussion due to their struggles this season include the Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers.

Cowboys eye Odell Beckham Jr.

Read ESPN’s fantasy football Daily Notes every weekday to stay caught up on the news you need to know and get a head start on the fantasy football content coming today and tomorrow to ESPN.com and the ESPN Fantasy App.

The news: ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that owner and general manager Jerry Jones on 105.3 The Fan said free agent Odell Beckham Jr. would look “pretty good” in a Cowboys uniform.

What it means in fantasy: Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has also recently spoken positively about Beckham. Last week, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported that Odell Beckham Jr. will be fully cleared by the end of the week. Beckham suffered a torn ACL in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI win over the Bengals. Among the teams interested in him are the Bills, Cowboys, Rams, Giants, 49ers, Chiefs and Packers. There is a strong chance he’ll need weeks of practice to get back to full speed and learn the playbook for his new team before making his 2022 debut. Fantasy managers should have realistic expectations when Beckham returns. Beckham could become a flex option rather than the WR1 we remember from his early days. Fantasy managers for whom that sounds appealing would be wise to stash him; Beckham is rostered in only 17.8% of ESPN leagues.

The news: Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Josh Allen’s right elbow injury involving his ulnar collateral ligament and related nerves will limit him this week at practice.

What it means in fantasy: Allen should be able to manage the injury for the rest of the season, but he may not play against the Vikings in Week 10. Since it’s on his throwing arm, this could be a major concern as the Bills prepare for a matchup against the Vikings. Fantasy managers would be wise to pick up another quarterback in case Allen misses time. Justin Fields, Jimmy Garoppolo and Daniel Jones are excellent alternatives.

Going deeper: Before the regular season began, there was similar optimism regarding Matthew Stafford’s elbow injury. This season, he averages only 11.7 fantasy points per game.

The news: Ravens RB Gus Edwards is expected to return following the team’s Week 10 bye.

What it means in fantasy: Edwards is expected to return to the lineup against the Panthers in Week 11 after missing Monday night’s game against the Saints due to a hamstring injury. DeSean Jackson, who played only 11 snaps against New Orleans and suffered a hamstring injury, is also expected to return according to head coach John Harbaugh.

Going deeper: Edwards and Kenyan Drake will face a Panthers defense that just gave up 211 total yards and five touchdowns to Joe Mixon on only 26 touches. Both will be very good flex options in this matchup.

The news: Tracy Wolfson of CBS reported that Buccaneers RB Leonard Fournette was “extremely frustrated” for being held out of a drive late in the first half.

What it means in fantasy: Fournette finished the game with 60 total yards on 14 touches. Rookie Rachaad White continues to eat into the veteran’s opportunity share, rushing eight times for 27 yards. Wolfson also reported that White consoled Fournette during the game telling him “we need you.” Both running backs have struggled to produce for a Buccaneers team that ranks last in the league in rushing (60.7 yards per game) and 22nd in run stop win rate. Fournette can be viewed as more of a low-end RB2 against the Seahawks in Week 10. There’s no better time than now to stash Rahaad White, who’s rostered in only 20.2% of leagues. As the rookie’s workload increases, he may become fantasy relevant right around playoff time.

The news: Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard was a full participant in Tuesday’s practice.

What it means in fantasy: Last week, Hubbard took part in limited sessions on Wednesday and Thursday but was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Bengals after a DNP on Friday. The Panthers still don’t use D’Onta Foreman in passing situations, which is a role Hubbard would most likely fill. He can be viewed as a flex option in deeper formats. Hubbard is rostered in 30.3% of ESPN leagues.

The news: Titans WR Treylon Burks is eligible to return from injured reserve in Week 10 against the Broncos.

What it means in fantasy: Head coach Mike Vrabel wasn’t sure if Burks would be activated this week. Before being injured, he had emerged as an every-down receiver in the Titans run heavy offense that ranks sixth in rushing attempts per game with 31.1. Burks is rostered in only 22.5% of ESPN leagues. In the first four games of the season, he caught 10 passes for 129 yards and rushed for 12 yards on two carries. In the Titans’ game against the Chiefs, rookie backup Malik Willis started for an injured Ryan Tannehill, and Tennessee’s receivers failed to catch a pass on five targets. Burks is talented enough to provide the Titans passing game a spark for the rest of the season, so fantasy managers should stash him now.

Odell Beckham Jr. Names Four Teams He Could Join

There have been many teams linked to Odell Beckham Jr. in recent months, but the free-agent receiver still remains one of the hottest available names on the market at the halfway point of the season.

Beckham, who’s been rehabbing a torn ACL he sustained in Super Bowl LVI in February, has kept his options open but, according to recent reports, the star wideout could be nearing a decision in the coming weeks. But while the mounting speculation will surely make for interesting conversations around the NFL, there’s hardly been enough reported information to suggest OBJ has narrowed his choices down to a single destination.

NFL fans looking for more insight into the factors that could be weighing on Beckham’s pending decision, however, may have received an interesting peek behind the curtain from the man himself thanks to a recent interview. In a clip shared Sunday from an upcoming episode of Complex’s Volume, Beckham name-dropped the Bills, Packers, Cowboys and his first NFL team, the Giants, as teams he’s been in contact with before discussing the ideal situation for the next chapter of his career.

“Whether it’s Buffalo, Green Bay calling, the Cowboys, reunion with the Giants, I want to be able to spill—not saying I only got three or four left, but these next three or four years—into something where I can buy a home, like I can call this place home,” Beckham said.

The 30-year-old’s desire to plant roots wherever he decides to take his talents is understandable considering the significant milestones he experienced during his eighth NFL season. Beckham won his first Super Bowl with the Rams on Feb. 13 then welcomed the birth of his son, Zydn, four days later.

While it remains to be seen where OBJ ultimately ends up taking his talents, his mentioning of the Cowboys could certainly raise plenty of eyebrows given a report that emerged Sunday morning.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Dallas has legitimate interest in Beckham whenever he’s ready to return. Rapoport also noted interested teams, which could also include the Bills, Giants, Rams, Chiefs and Packers, expect OBJ to be healthy and sign with a team by early December.

Rams haven’t made last offer to Odell Beckham Jr.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — After wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. tweeted Wednesday that the contract offer the Los Angeles Rams made to him wasn’t reflective of his worth, coach Sean McVay indicated he didn’t think that would be the team’s final offer.

“LA knows where I wanted to be,” Beckham tweeted. “… but they didn’t offer me…. ANYthing! So idk what people want me to do, I def kno my worth and what the offer was isn’t reflective of that. So it’s tough to say that I can come on back even tho I thought I finally found that home !”

Beckham signed with the Rams in November after he was released by the Cleveland Browns. During the postseason, Beckham had 21 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns before tearing his left ACL during Super Bowl LVI.

“I love Odell,” McVay said. “We have constant dialogue. He also knows that certainly I don’t think that’s the last [offer] that would come from us. I’m not familiar with what it is. He knows how we feel about him. We’ve got a little bit of time.

“But [I] love Odell. Nothing but good things coming from me.”

The Rams still have a nameplate in the locker room of their practice facility for Beckham. The Rams have not been quiet about their desire for Beckham’s return. In September, during a news conference, cornerback Jalen Ramsey brought up the receiver in one of his answers and then paused to say, “Odell, come back.”
