Man with loaded gun in carry-on bag arrested at Newark airport on Thanksgiving

An unidentified man was arrested by police on Thanksgiving Day after he was found with a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The man, who was from Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was carrying a 9mm handgun, loaded with 13 bullets, including one in the chamber, according to a press release Friday from the Transportation Security Administration. His name and the charges he faces were not immediately released.

Thomas Carter, TSA federal security director for New Jersey, said that arrest showed the vigilance of TSA officers.

“Getting caught with and arrested for carrying a loaded gun at our airport means this individual had a pretty bad Thanksgiving,” he said in the organization’s press release. “Our TSA officers are on the job this busy holiday weekend so that others can reach their destinations safely and spend the holiday with their family and friends. Our team is staying vigilant and focused on the mission to help ensure that prohibited items are not carried onto a flight.”

A loaded handgun was found in a passenger’s carry-on luggage by the TSA on Nov. 24, 2022, at Newark airport in New Jersey.

In addition to his arrest, the man faces a “stiff federal financial civil penalty that could run into thousands of dollars,” Carter said.

While travelers are allowed to fly with firearms, there are strict TSA rules for doing so. They must be unloaded and placed in a secure container in checked baggage. Airlines may also have their own requirements. Firearm possession laws also vary by state and locality. The TSA recommends passengers “do their homework” to avoid fines or other penalties.

The suspect is the third passenger to have been arrested this month at Newark airport for carrying a gun in “accessible property.” It’s the 14th such case at the airport in 2022.

In 2021, TSA officers detected 5,972 guns at security checkpoints nationwide. About 86% of the weapons were loaded.

2 police officers shot in Newark, search continues for gunman

Investigators searched a Newark apartment building where they thought the suspect in the shooting of two Newark police officers was hiding, only to discover that the man was nowhere to be found.

Police have identified the wanted man as 30-year-old Kendall Howard of East Orange.

Police say he opened fire on the officers at around 2 p.m. in Newark at Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue. They were trying to arrest the suspect for a different shooting, CBS2’s Kevin Rincon reported.

The wounded officers are recovering at University Hospital.

Police so far have come up empty in search for gunman who shot 2 Newark officers

Cops were called to an apartment building after a resident identified a man linked to a shooting from last week. Officers searched through the building, didn’t find the suspect, and started to leave. That’s when they found him in the parking lot, and got into a shootout.

For hours, police from far and wide, including the FBI and ATF, kept residents locked down in their homes.

“It was horrible. At first, I thought it was firecrackers, but then, because it was so many, then I realized what it was,” witness Rosalind Reeves said.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said a resident called police after identifying a shooting suspect seen on a wanted flyer. Minutes later, officers were combing through the apartment building. As they were leaving, that’s when they found the suspect in the parking lot.

“The gentleman pulled a gun out, shot two police officers at close range. Gun shot was returned, fire was returned. The gentleman retreated back into the building,” Baraka said.

That’s what triggered the massive response. Officers on the ground, even on rooftops, kept their eyes peeled for the gunman.

The officers were rushed to the hospital.

“One was shot through the face into his shoulder. He was in the hospital, had surgery. He’s in stable condition. They’re keeping him overnight. The other officer was shot in the leg. He’s also in the hospital in stable condition,” Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.

The suspect then ran back inside, but after nearly eight hours of searching, police came up empty handed.

“The perpetrator is not in the building. There is an active warrant right now for the perpetrator that’s out right now,” Fragé said.

“This remains an active investigation. We are asking for the public’s cooperation and participation in helping identify and locate Mr. Howard. But thanks to our federal partners and our state, county, and local partnerships, I’m confident that all necessary resources are being deployed,” state Attorney General Matthew Platkin said.

Meanwhile, many who watched their neighborhood turn into a crime scene are upset.

“How do they expect people and their kids to be safe around here after that? And he’s on the loose still?” one man asked. “If all of them couldn’t do it, somebody else might.”

“I’ve been standing here since 3:15 p.m. I’m angry and it’s sad that things like this are happening in this neighborhood,” building resident Victoria Emeghara-Owoo said.

Cops Shot by Van Vechten St, Source Says – NBC New York

Two police officers were shot in Newark, New Jersey, Tuesday by a suspect armed with a long gun who fled to the top of a nearby building, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation and officials.

One officer was hit in the neck, the other in the leg, law enforcement sources said. As of 4 p.m., both are expected to survive their injuries.

The wounded cops had been serving a warrant at a home near Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue in the state’s largest city around 2 p.m. when gunfire erupted from an elevated location, possibly a window or a roof, officials said.

At least two shots were fired from the suspect’s weapon, a high-ranking law enforcement source said.

The source said the suspect was not in custody but the situation was under control and there was no further threat to the community. That source said the neighborhood was locked down and the shooter was believed to be in a building within that zone. Law enforcement officers were said to have him surrounded inside the building.

SWAT vehicles and an army of law enforcement officers swarmed the scene, video shows. Drones and helicopters were deployed to assist from the air.

Federal investigators with the FBI and ATF confirmed they were sending resources to the scene as well.

A shooting in Newark — New Jersey’s largest city — by an individual with a long gun has left at least one police officer injured, according to a law enforcement source.

Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted that he was monitoring the situation.

“I am in touch with local authorities and the state is providing resources as requested,” the Democrat said. “We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”

Sources say they are looking for a single shooter.

Microsoft Flight Simulator – PMDG Discusses Progress on Boeing 737 & 777; Newark Liberty Airport Gets New Screenshots & Chetumal Announced

News

Third-party developers had news to share about upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator add-ons including an aircraft and scenery.

Third-party developers had news to share about upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator add-ons including an aircraft and scenery.

We start with PMDG, which provided a rather sizable package of updates about its products. Here’s a summary.

An update is coming to the entire Boeing 737 line including “fixes, tuning, and improvements” including tweaks to “improve stability of control-related functions such as pitch, yaw, roll, and thrust.” It should come in a few days followed by another “to bring greater stability to the thrust channel when operating under A/T.”

The 737-900 is being prepared for beta testing, with the “best guess” for release in mid-November.

The process to release the 737 line on the official marketplace will start “soonish” but PMDG is going at it slowly to make sure the product is mature.

As Asobo and Microsoft are still working on compatibility for C++/WASM projects on the Xbox, PMDG is waiting for that process to be sorted before releasing (actually re-releasing) the DC-6 on the console. After that is done, it’ll work in concert with Microsoft to ensure that the 737s are also compatible.

Last but not least, a juicy bit regarding the 777.

“This project is humming right along- in fact it made greater progress than expected while I was away on vacation. I suggested to the team that this was a good indication that perhaps I should remain on vacation, but there was not a general sense of agreement in this regard.

The flight deck model for this project is absolutely spectacular and since we used a “well loved” flight deck as the basis for our build, it has more of the wear and maintenance abuse you’d expect to find in an in-service airplane. For those who have not seen me point this out: We used a brand new (not-yet-in-service) 737 for the 737 for MSFS, we used an average age 777 and we have a beat-to-death workhorse 747 serving as the basis for that product. It will give you a good breadth of age- and before anyone asks, no we really don’t plan to let you choose the age of the cockpit. It is a HUGE amount of work for the 3D and texture models to match, since the techniques we use build many of the imperfections right down to the model level… but wait until you see it- it is spectacular!”

A United Airlines flight made an emergency landing at New Jersey’s Newark airport after circling over the Atlantic

CNN
 —

A mechanical problem on a United Airlines flight prompted an emergency landing early Thursday at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport.

“After our aircraft experienced a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff, it remained in the air to burn fuel and then landed safely,” United said in a statement. “Passengers deplaned at the gate and a new aircraft is scheduled to depart this morning.”

An initial maintenance inspection suggests an issue with a hydraulic pump on the aircraft, which had 256 passengers on board for the flight, United Airlines said.

Sparks flew off the plane as it climbed after takeoff, according to a video posted online that purports to show the flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating what happened with Flight 149, which departed Newark airport late Wednesday night, then declared an emergency. The Boeing 777-200 aircraft had been headed to Sao Paulo, Brazil, before returning to Newark, the FAA said.

The hydraulic system on the Boeing 777 runs key systems, such as the landing gear, flaps and brakes. There are three redundant hydraulic systems on the plane, meaning two can fail and the airplane can still operate normally.

The flight circled over the Atlantic Ocean to burn fuel before returning to the airport about two hours after departure, flight tracking data shows.

CNN has reached out to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for comment.

Maryland Death Investigation:5 people confirmed dead inside Elk Mills home, near Newark, Delaware border after reported shooting

ELK MILLS, Maryland (WPVI) — Police say three children are among the five people who were found dead of gunshot wounds at a home in Cecil County, Maryland on Friday.

The crime scene is at a home on Hebron Court in Elk Mills, located just a few miles away from Newark, Delaware.

According to Cecil County Sheriff Scott Adams, a man called 911 around 9 a.m. to report that a woman and three kids were shot to death.

The sheriff said the caller had no emotion.

“I think sometimes in these kind of events it’s not uncommon. Almost catatonic,” Adams said.

“The subject hung up. We attempted to make calls back and they went unanswered,” Chief Deputy Gerald Widdoes said.

Officers arrived to find a man dead inside a garage. A handgun was found nearby.

Another body was found on the first floor. Three other bodies were found on the second floor.

Authorities didn’t have the exact ages of the children, but said they were a 5th grader, a 7th grader and an 8th grader.

The names of those involved have not been released pending family notification.

No further details about the circumstances of the shooting have been released.

When asked if this we being called a murder-suicide, Sheriff Adams said “not yet.”

Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Neighbors were stunned that this could happen in their community.

“it just doesn’t happen around here. It’s not like a big city where people get shot and killed. It’s five people in one day in one household.. It’s unbelievable,” said Elk Mills resident Kevin Whipp.

Delays at JFK, LGA and Newark airports expected: FAA

Passengers traveling from all three major tri-state area airports faced delays Monday night as airline disruptions continue to be a cruel summer theme.

The Federal Aviation Administration warned in a tweet Monday around 5 p.m. that delays could be around two hours at JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Airport. The FAA blamed the issues on “unexpected staff availability.”

“Due to unexpected staff availability tonight, the FAA must reduce the flow of aircraft around New York City to maintain safety,” the tweet said. “Evening delays may be 2 hrs at @JFKairport, @LGAairport & EWRairport. Check fly.faa.gov for updates and w/ your airline for flight info.”

Flight would be delayed due to staffing issues, the FAA said.
AP

In a follow-up tweet shortly after 9 p.m., the FAA, “New York City airspace now has some additional staffing” allowing for ground delays to be called off at JFK and Newark.

“It’s unusual to see the anticipated delays verbalized as due to lack of staff availability,” Kathleen Bangs, a spokesperson for the tracking group FlightAware.com, told NBC News in an email.

The FAA announcement is the latest complication for the airline industry that’s struggled all summer long, leading to delayed and canceled flights for passengers ready to hop on planes as the concern over COVID wanes.

More flight cancellations at LaGuardia in NYC, Newark airport

More flight cancellations plagued LaGuardia Airport on Friday morning — after a disastrous 24 hours when over one-third of all flights set to depart the New York City hub were scrapped.

There were 15% of flights out of LaGuardia canceled as of Friday morning, and an additional 6% were delayed, according to data from the flight-tracking site FlightAware.com.

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey also was reporting significant cancellations, with 11% of all flights set to depart Friday being axed.

Nationwide, FlightAware is reporting more than 1,000 cancellations within, into and out of the US.

The avalanche of cancellations and delays comes as kids are starting their summer breaks and families are plotting their long-awaited vacations, which many have put off for more than two years because of COVID.

And Americans’ pent-up wanderlust is only going to increase, with data analyzed by the travel insurance company Allianz Partners suggesting that trips to Europe will soar 600% compared to last year, reported NPR.

At least some of the cancellations Friday were due in part to inclement weather in many sections of the country, with rain and thunderstorms expected on the East Coast, in much of the South, in several Western states and the Pacific Northwest.

But according to airline industry experts, a more systemic problem, namely a dire shortage of pilots, is to blame for much of Americans’ long-term travel woes.

During a five-day period around Memorial Day weekend, which traditionally opens the travel season in the US, 2,800 flights were canceled nationwide.

Unions representing pilots at Delta, American and Southwest Airlines complained that the companies have been dragging their feet when it comes to hiring additional pilots to meet the rapidly growing demand as travel begins to ramp up again.

Industry insiders have even coined a new term — “revenge travel” — to describe Americans’ aggressive determination to make up for all the trips they were forced to skip during the pandemic.

On Thursday, leading airline CEOs met with US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to discuss some of the challenges facing their industry, including overburdened airports and widespread customer dissatisfaction.

“I let them know that this is a moment when we are really counting on them to deliver reliably for the traveling public,” Buttigieg told NBC News.

Buttigieg presented the CEOs with a wish list for this summer, which included smooth travel over the July 4 holiday, a commitment to stick to published flight schedules, and improved customer service.

Brendan Langley: CFL’s Calgary Stampeders investigating reports player involved in brawl at Newark airport

“The Calgary Stampeders football club is aware of the reports concerning Brendan Langley,” the Stampeders said in the statement. “The team is currently looking into the matter in order to learn the full details and will have no further comment until the investigation is complete.”

CNN has reached out to Langley and the CFL with no response.

Earlier Monday, CNN spoke with both the Port Authority in Newark and United Airlines about a confrontation caught on video between a United Airlines employee and another man.

The video reviewed by CNN starts after the confrontation has begun and it is not apparent what instigated the fight. It shows the two exchanging blows.

The Port Authority told CNN a man named Brendan Langley is charged with simple assault after engaging in a fight with a United employee. When asked if the Brendan Langley charged in the incident is the current player with the CFL, the Port Authority declined to comment.

According to a Port Authority spokesperson for Newark airport, Langley was involved in a fight with the employee on May 19 at approximately 11:03 a.m.

Langley was charged with simple assault and released on his own recognizance, the Port Authority spokesperson said. United did not identify the former employee and the Port Authority did not indicate he faced any charges.

“United Airlines does not tolerate violence of any kind at our airports or on board our planes and we are working with local authorities in their investigation of this matter,” the airline said in a statement to CNN. “United Ground Express informed us that the employee has been terminated.”

CFL player Brendan Langley was signed as a free agent in February for the Stampeders. According to the team’s site, he is a former NFL player drafted in 2017 by the Denver Broncos.
