Fox commentator melts down over vaccinations — saying she’s going to be sent to a concentration ‘camp’

Fox contributor Lisa Booth ranted on Sunday that the United States isn’t all that much better than China when it comes to taking away the freedoms of Americans who refuse to be vaccinated.

Chinese citizens have been protesting as people continue to be quarantined at home, lacking food and medicine. The public has grown angry after the deaths of two children as a result of anti-virus controls restricting their parents from being able to get medical help.

In the United States, Americans can leave their home whether they have the vaccine or not and they’re able to do whatever they want regardless of their vaccine status. Similarly, the U.S. has medical assistance that comes to one’s home when they dial 9-1-1.

Still, Booth maintained that the U.S. and China are really the same, thanks to liberals.

“Nearly half of Democrats wanted to put people like me, who haven’t had a vaccine, in a government camp,” said Booth. She went on to complain that she couldn’t even go out to dinner at restaurants if she wasn’t vaccinated.

“You have Joe Biden, still, purging military heroes who don’t want to get a vaccine,” said Booth.

It’s a mischaracterization of the idea that Biden is purging the anti-vaccine people. The reality is that because soldiers are sent all over the world, they’re required to have all vaccines from Malaria to Hep A and B, the flu vaccine each year, as well as specific immunization for the country to which they’re being deployed, all of which are listed here.

In the case of the military, it is a national security issue, if a virus spreads through an entire unit while overseas it means that the full unit is out of commission. Soldiers who are unwilling to adhere to military rules and the orders of commanders are always free to leave. Following military leaders and orders, however, are key requirements of being in the military.

Vaccinations were a big strategy that helped Americans be safe in World War II. During the Spanish-American war, Civil War and World War I, the disease death rate compared to battle deaths was enough that it dramatically impact the power of the American military, one key report explained in 2016.

“Before World War II, soldiers died more often of disease than of battle injuries. The ratio of disease-to-battle casualties was approximately 5-to-1 in the Spanish-American War and 2-to-1 in the Civil War,” said the report. Improved sanitation reduced disease casualties in World War I, but it could not protect troops from the 1918 influenza pandemic. During the outbreak, flu accounted for roughly half of US military casualties in Europe.”

A recent report revealed that in Republican counties deaths from COVID-19 are six times higher than that of Democratic counties.

NVIDIA’s 16-Pin Connector on GeForce RTX 4090 Graphics Card Burns Up, Melts The Cable & The Plug

The first case of an NVIDIA 16-pin connector, powering the GeForce RTX 4090, burning up and melting the plug has been reported over at Reddit.

NVIDIA 16-Pin Connector Burns Up! Melts The Power Connector On GeForce RTX 4090 Graphics Card

Update: Another graphics card, this time the ASUS GeForce RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC, has been affected by the same issue. As tweeted by @Vectral555, we can see that the 16-Pin connector and the power plug on the PCB, both have burned up. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has reached out to the OP & we’ll keep you updated on how things work out.

Redditor, u/reggie_gakil, posted on the NVIDIA subreddit a picture of the NVIDIA 16-pin connector all burned up. The connector was powering his brand-new GeForce RTX 4090 (custom model). The pictures show that both the power adapter which includes a 16-pin to 4 x 8-pin plug and the power connector on the PCB ended up in flames and melted. The graphics card was the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OC.

Looking closely at the pictures, it seems like the issue occurred around the main 12-pins under the four additional pins on the top. But looking at the adapter, almost the entirety of it has burned up and melted. The cable is supplied and confirms the official NVIDIA specifications and we already stated that bending or putting too much stress on the cable can lead to abnormal temps that can end up causing issues such as these.

The user reports that he was playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 PC when the card went up in flames and burned the power connector. He also states that it could be a faulty cable and will RMA it though we won’t be able to get to the bottom of this issue until we get more information.

PCI-SIG Internal Investigation of The Issue (Image Credits: GamersNexus):

It was recently spotted that the NVIDIA 16-pin adapter cable for the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards is just too thick and not easy to manage in smaller PC cases as it hits the side panel really often. So users will have to bend the cable a lot to close the panel but once again, this bending is not recommended as it could heat up the cables and cause the adapter to burst up in flames.

More on that here. Custom cable manufacturers and modding companies are trying to overcome this issue by offering 90-degree angled connectors which should go up on sale in a few weeks.

But this is just one report and the issue doesn’t seem to be too widespread otherwise we would have been hearing multiple reports. But users only had two weeks at max with the cards & most people are still waiting to get their shipments. So if the adapter or the plug on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards is really faulty, we will know for sure in the coming months.

Satellite images reveal how the Alps are turning green as snow melts in rising temperatures

Satellite images have revealed that the consequences of global warming can be seen from space — as the Alps are turning greener.

The European mountain range is famously covered in a blanket of snow for the majority of the year, attracting skiers and snowboarders across the world.

But new data has found that vegetation above the tree line has increased in nearly 80 per cent of the Alps over the last 38 years.

Although the new plants may assist in reducing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, this is threatening biodiversity in the mountains.

Shrubs that are better suited to the new climate conditions will out-compete many Alpine plants, researchers from the University of Lausanne and the University of Basel said.

They also discovered that snow cover had decreased significantly in almost 10 per cent of the area measured.

Lead author and assistant professor Sabine Rumpf concluded that the observations were the result of climate change, and are likely to get worse.

Satellite images reveal the consequences of global warming can be seen from space — as the Alps are turning greener. Aerial photographs of the Alps taken in 1998 (left) and 2021 (right) show an increase in vegetation because it is slightly greener

This is a black and white aerial photograph of the Swiss Alps taken in 1984 when the study was started. Over the next 38 years, global warming caused an increase in vegetation and decrease in snow cover as noted by scientists in Switzerland

Graphics showing changes of vegetation and snow cover in the European Alps from 1984 to 2021; A – Vegetation productivity, B – Summer snow, C – Year-round snow. Bar chart D shows these changes as a proportion of coloured pixels in the graphics

She said: ‘The scale of the change has turned out to be absolutely massive in the Alps.

‘Greener mountains reflect less sunlight and therefore lead to further warming — and, in turn, to further shrinkage of reflective snow cover.’

Mountain landscapes are biodiversity hotspots and provide a host of important ecosystem services.

For example, meltwater from alpine glaciers and snow provides nearly half of the world’s freshwater resources.

However, mountain environments are also more susceptible to climate change, and are warming roughly twice as fast as the global average.

This is suspected to be a result of the peaks losing their white blanket of snow that reflects the sun’s radiation, and is replaced with darker-coloured ground which absorbs heat.

The new colouration is thought to supplement the heat-trapping effect of greenhouse gases, and are heating up more quickly relative to land that never had snow cover.

Yet, while melting glaciers have become a symbol of climate change in the Alps and Arctic regions, the reduction in snow is not the biggest consequence on the mountains, according to the researchers.

Vegetation above the tree line in the Alps has increased in nearly 80 per cent of the Alps, while snow cover had decreased in almost 10 per cent of the area measured, since 1984

This graphic shows the ‘greening’ and ‘browning’ in the Alps over the last 38 years. The green pixels are proportional to vegetation increase, and brown pixels represent a vegetation decrease. Glaciated areas are transparent as they were not considered in the study

Professor Rumpf from the University of Basel, with Professor Grégoire Mariéthoz and Professor Antoine Guisan from the University of Lausanne, investigated the change in vegetation using Landsat images from 1984 to 2021.

Their study found that plant biomass above the tree line increased in more than 77 per cent of the observed area.

This growth is called ‘greening’, and is because plants are colonising new areas of the Alps and the vegetation is generally becoming denser and taller.

It is a result of changes in precipitation and longer vegetation periods as a result of rising temperatures, and predominated in warmer areas.

Additionally, less than one per cent of the observed Alpine area experienced ‘browning’, where plant productivity declined.

‘Alpine plants are adapted to harsh conditions, but they’re not very competitive,’ said Professor Rumpf.

As environmental conditions change, she says, these specialised species lose their advantage and are out-competed.

She added: ‘The unique biodiversity of the Alps is therefore under considerable pressure.’

The new study has been published in the journal Science.

GLOBAL WARMING AND MOUNTAINS

Certain gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, trap heat similar to the glass roof of a greenhouse, and they are called greenhouse gases

During the day, the Sun shines through the atmosphere and Earth’s surface warms up in the sunlight

At night, the Earth’s surface cools, releasing heat back into the air, but some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere

Human activities, for example burning fossil fuels like coal and oil, puts more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere

Too much of these greenhouse gases can cause Earth’s atmosphere to trap more and more heat, causing the planet to warm up

Since the pre-industrial period, human activities are estimated to have increased Earth’s global average temperature by about 1.8°F  (1°C), a number that is currently increasing by 0.36°F (0.2°C) per decade

Permafrost, glaciers and ice sheets are all struggling to stay in tact in the face of the warmer climate

Some animal and plant species rely heavily on cold conditions and are migrating to higher altitudes to find suitable habitat

This is putting severe strain on the ecosystems as more animals and more species are living in an ever-shrinking region

On top of the environmental pressure, the lack of ice on mountains is vastly increasing the risks of landslides and volcanic eruptions

Permafrost, glaciers and ice sheets are all struggling to stay in tact in the face of the warmer climate that is a result of the greenhouse effect

Alongside colleagues in the Netherlands and Finland, the scientists also used the high-resolution satellite data to study reduction in snow cover over the last 38 years.

Excluding regions below 1,700 meters, glaciers and forests, they looked at the satellite images to see which areas had become “snow-free” over time.

The results found that the change in snow cover above the tree line had declined significantly in almost 10 per cent of the area.

This peaked at colder temperatures, driven predominantly by precipitation changes brought on by climate change.

Antoine Guisan said: ‘Previous analyses of satellite data hadn’t identified any such trend,

‘This may be because the resolution of the satellite images was insufficient or because the periods considered were too short.’

They could not use the images to draw conclusions about snow depth, however they claim previous studies taking ground-based measurements have shown a decrease.

As global warming increases, the “greening” is also likely going to contribute to snow recession along with the rising temperature.

More of the glaciers will melt which may lead to landslides, rockfalls and mudflows, and the thawing of permafrost could release “locked in” greenhouse gases.

This will likely have consequences on snow sports, tourism and the drinking water supply, as well as threatening fragile alpine plant and animal communities.

Mountain environments are also more susceptible to climate change, and are warming roughly twice as fast as the global average, thought to be because the snow once reflected the sun’s rays but is now being melted by the rising temperatures

Climate change has dramatically altered the Swiss Alps by transforming glaciers into nearly 1,200 new lakes since 1850 – and 1,000 of them still exist today.

A team of scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) combined aerial photo data of the massive mountain range and years of data on glaciers in Switzerland to determine the inventory of lakes.

The analysis also revealed 180 of the existing lakes had only been created from 2006 through 2016, when 18 new bodies of water appeared each year.

According to the scientists, glaciers lost a full two percent of their volume in 2020 alone.

Climate change has dramatically altered the Swiss Alps by transforming glaciers into nearly 1,200 new lakes since 1850 – and 1,000 of them still exist today. Pictured is Steisee, Canton of Berne

Scientists warned that the growing number of glacial lakes increases the risk of such outbursts and thus the danger of flood waves for the settlements below. Pictured is Griesseeli, Canton of Uri, between Clariden and Klausenpass

A quarter of the newly formed lakes have either shrunk or disappeared altogether.

For the study, the team recorded the location, elevation, shape and area of the 1,200 lakes at different times, along with the type and material of the dam, surface drainage and recorded development of the lake.

The assessment showed that there was an initial peak in glacial lake formation in the Swiss Alps between 1946 and 1973, when nearly eight new lakes appeared on average each year.

From there a brief decline was observed, but then picked up again between 2006 and 2016, when 18 new lakes appearing each year on average, while the water surface swelled by over 4,300 square feet annually.

Elderly Cat Enjoying Custom Charcuterie Board and Wine Melts Hearts Online

One cat’s heart-warming tale has delighted the internet after a video of her enjoying the finer things in life went viral.

Shared on February 8 by TikTok user fupathecat, the video shows a full charcuterie board and bottle of wine before panning to Fupa the cat tucking into a custom-made charcuterie board with a bottle of special cat wine to the left.

The text overlaying the video reads: “When you’re an elderly cat with fleas, arthritis, a torn ACL, feline AIDS and herpes and get adopted by a 21-year-old college student and are now medicated and get your own charcuterie board and cat wine every Wine Wednesday.”

Shared with the caption “rags to riches,” the video has over 228,000 views and 16,000 likes.

Aged around 11-17 years old, Fupa’s conditions mean she is extra special. A torn ACL refers to a cruciate ligament injury that occurs when ligaments that connect the upper and lower leg bones tear or rupture completely. Cats with this condition will often struggle to bear any weight on the injured leg which can be extremely painful. Treatment options vary from medications to reduce pain and inflammation to surgery.

Feline AIDS, which is also referred to as FIV, is a relatively common condition that compromises a cat’s immune system. A feline-only virus that cannot be transmitted to humans, cats who test positive for FIV can live for many years without serious symptoms if they have the correct treatment and care.

This adorable rags to riches story has warmed the hearts of TikTokers, with many commenting of their joy for the lucky adopted cat.

One user wrote: “Living her best life as she should be,” while another said: “You rock for taking such good care of your fur baby! Such a lucky kitty!”

In the comments, the poster, fupathecat, gushed about how much her feline friend meant to her. She wrote: “Meeting her was the best thing that’s ever happened to me she’s an angel.”

The 21-year-old also shared that Fupa used to be a farm cat, so was used to stealing scraps: “She loves pasta and cheese and avocados,” she said.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reports that approximately 4.1 million shelter animals are adopted each year.

Some TikTokers commented on how they need to up their game when it comes to spoiling their feline friends. One user wrote: “I thought I was a good cat owner. I now realize my cats have never had a charcuterie board.” Another viewer said: “And I thought I was a good cat mom until I found out that cat wine exists… Well I gotta get some now.”

Newsweek has reached out to fupathecat for comment.

Russia Melts Down, Claims U.S. Rigged Olympics to Steal Our Golds

Russia’s decades-long dominance in rhythmic gymnastics was shattered at this year’s Tokyo Olympics, where Russian athletes failed to win the Olympic gold in the individual all-around event for the first time since 1996. In Sunday’s group competition, Russia didn’t win gold either, losing to Bulgaria.

Since authoritarian countries cherish Olympic competitions as a tool to inflame nationalist sentiments and promote their countries’ global standing, Russia’s defeats were loudly rejected by a host of pro-Kremlin voices—who resorted to state media’s time-honored tradition of conspiracy-mongering.

Experts on Russian state television have been trying to read each country’s Olympic gold medals as tea leaves, suggesting that the outcome determines the new global hegemon. Last week, pro-Kremlin pundits, hosts, and experts relished the idea of the “weakened” United States being edged out by China. The host of the state TV show 60 Minutes, Olga Skabeeva, pontificated: “You can’t beat China. They have the most gold medals.” Eager to inject Russia’s notorious transphobic rhetoric into the conversation, Skabeeva added: “And none of them are transgenders, so they will keep procreating.”

To Russia’s dismay, the United States ultimately surpassed China, winning 39 gold medals and 113 medals overall—the most in the world. And that means, according to Russian state TV’s logic, that the U.S. is not relinquishing its global leadership—which does not sit well with Russia.

“Tokyo Olympics are the clearest example of total Russophobia. These Olympic Games stink. Global sports forever ceased being an honest competition, turning into a cheap political farce,” Skabeeva raged on Monday’s broadcast of 60 Minutes. She baselessly alleged: “At the behest of Americans, the International Olympic Committee took away two gold medals from Russia.”

Lawmaker Aleksei Zhuravlyov described other countries competing in the Tokyo Games as “a pack of Russophobic beasts, headed by the United States.” “Americans are freaks. Moral freaks. Why are we even discussing this parade of freaks and perverts?” asked Pyotr Tolstoy, deputy speaker of the Russian State Duma.

Oleg Matveychev, a member of the Russian Expert Institute for Social Research, claimed that Olympic judges’ decisions had been swayed by Russophobic propaganda.

“The medal of the Israeli sportswoman is worthless, she should throw it out,” he said, referring to Linoy Ashram’s win over Russian Dina Averina in the rhythmic gymnastics all-around competition—which the Russian team asked to be overturned. “She hung shame around her neck.” He proceeded to assert that American Olympic victories are “worthless” and likewise are “achieved by cheating,” calling for all U.S. athletes to be allowed to compete only in the Paralympics, because so many of them are “sick.”

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko told TASS on Sunday that the Russian Olympic Committee sent a request to the International Gymnastics Federation about judging in the rhythmic gymnastics. Accusing the judges of being biased, Chernyshenko said: “Naturally, we will not leave unaddressed situations when politics were above objective and fair appraisal of performances of Russian athletes.”

Appearing on state TV channel Rossiya-24, the president of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation, Irina Viner-Usmanova, claimed: “During these Olympic Games, for the first time in history there has been such horror and mayhem… This outcome was planned in advance.” She added that the decision was supposedly made “not based on the performance and not based on results, but based on the desired outcome.” Viner-Usmanova described the judging of the Olympic event in question as “obscene.”

On her Telegram account, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova explained Russia’s losses by alleging that “Russophobic bastards” could not allow Russia to win and therefore “resorted to fraud in front of the entire world.” Appearing on Monday’s broadcast of 60 Minutes, Zakharova claimed that Russia’s victories and achievements are being usurped by its opponents. “Global sports are in danger,” she complained, bellyaching about “gross injustice” perpetrated against Russian athletes in Tokyo.

RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, was so upset with the judges of the gymnastics competition that she tweeted: “After the slaughter of our gymnasts by judges from different countries, I really regret not working for the GRU.” GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency, is known to specialize in sabotage and assassinations and was reportedly responsible for the attempted assassination of ex-double agent Sergei Skripal in the English city of Salisbury in 2018.

Russia’s overblown reaction has no basis in reality. The main complaint against the gold medal victory of Israel’s Ashram is that she dropped her ribbon during the last exercise, with Russian sports figures and commentators claiming that such a mess-up would have made it impossible for her to win. However, Averina, the Russian silver medalist in Tokyo, won gold at the 2018 world championship despite the fact that she had dropped her ribbon, beating none other than Ashram into silver. This year, Ashram’s routine exceeded Averina’s in its level of difficulty, with cumulative points securing her victory—even after the deduction for her error.

Disregarding the facts, the head of state-funded RT, Simonyan, described the Olympic judges as “beasts,” posted their names on her Twitter account, and called for the Russians in Tokyo to spit at their backs. Simonyan insisted that Ashram can “remain a human being” only if she returns the gold medal. As a result of the vicious smear campaign waged by Moscow, Ashram’s social media pages have been flooded by hateful comments from resentful Russians.

Aside from wounded pride, Russia’s accusations of rigged Olympics serve another important political agenda: nurturing the narrative of fortress under siege to promote national unity.

Appearing on Monday’s 60 Minutes, Professor Oleg Barabanov of the Russian Academy of Sciences explicitly articulated this approach: “I read a lot of comments on sports forums to decipher public opinions on various topics. I was amazed how unanimously our country supported Dina and [twin sister] Arina Averina in this unfair judging… The biggest outcome is that our entire country saw and understood that there is an ongoing anti-Russian campaign, that we are encircled by the ring of enemies… not only according to the tales of TV propagandists, but in real life. From this point of view, those judges who misjudged Dina Averina did a big, useful thing for the consolidation of Russian society.”

‘Bridgerton’ star Regé-Jean Page hosts ‘SNL’ and Twitter melts down: ‘The thirst is real’

Regé-Jean Page came to play — and to smolder — in his inaugural Saturday Night Live hosting gig. The breakout Bridgerton star capitalized on the success of Netflix’s blockbuster period romance, which is officially the most successful show in the streaming service’s history, with a lively sketch comedy debut that had viewers applauding and hearts fluttering. And the British-Zimbabwean actor leaned into his sex symbol status. “People associate me with being this smoldering, sensual smokeshow,” he said in his monologue, which was frequently interrupted by the passionate cheers of devoted fans. “But I assure you, I’m just a regular guy.” Sure… a regular guy who knows how to expertly seduce the camera.

Page was joined onstage by his “personal liaisons” Aidy Bryant and Ego Nwodim, as well as Chloe Fineman, who arrived in her Regency-era finest to play his Bridgerton co-lead — and rumored real-life love interest — Phoebe Dynevor. And the performers couldn’t hide their own love for the brooding, beautiful Duke he plays on TV, even though he kept insisting otherwise. “I’m nothing like my character — I’m actually quite shy,” Page said, just before striking another smoldering pose as the SNL band cranked up the sexy music.

Bryant and Nwodim went on to cite their favorite scenes from the series… most of which featured the host and “extremely hot sex man” in various stages of undress. And, once again, the audience expressed their extreme appreciation for his commitment to the role. Page repaid them with one final bit of romantic flair, crooning the Righteous Brothers favorite “Unchained Melody,” with Ghost-level energy. “I’m happy to play the Duke: I’ve been around for awhile, though,” Page said afterwards. “I was in Roots, I’ve played high-flying lawyers. Yet somehow people just want me to be this guy who says, ‘I burn for you.'” After she found her voice again, Fineman spoke for the Studio 8H audience by saying, “Yeah, I mean why would anyone want you to do that?”

It’s safe to say that Twitter was vibing big time on Page’s energy.

And the love for Page didn’t dissipate after that smoldering monologue: many noted how the SNL writing staff gave him multiple opportunities to show off his range beyond being the handsomest guy in the room. In fact, the obligatory Bridgerton sketch was saved for the end of the show… which was just as well since it was also the weakest skit of the night. Whether he was singing sea shanties, wearing a face shield or discussing Taylor Swift, Page had the audience in the palm of his hand. After tonight, his career is officially on fire.

Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. on NBC
