Lyon, France: Fire in apartment building kills 10, including 5 children

Paris
CNN
 —

At least 10 people, including five children, were killed when a fire broke out Friday morning at an eight-story apartment building in a suburb of the French city of Lyon.

Four people are in critical condition, and another ten, including two firefighters, suffered minor injuries from the blaze in the town of Vaulx-en-Velin, the regional authority of Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes said in a statement.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the children who were killed ranged from ages 3 to 15. The fire has since been put out.

“It’s obviously a shock, the death toll is extremely serious,” Darmanin told journalists.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne called the incident “tragic” and offered her solidarity and support to the victims and their loved ones.

A local resident named Sarem, who lives 100 meters (328 feet) from the building, told CNN affiliate BFMTV that he had heard children shouting from a fourth-floor balcony at around 2:25 a.m. and that a group of residents used a ladder to evacuate 25 people from the second floor.

The flames “weren’t violent,” he said, but there was a lot of smoke and “the people who were crying for help couldn’t breathe.”

Around 170 firefighters and 65 fire engines were sent to the scene, the regional authority said.

Emergency services were alerted about 3:12 a.m. local time on Friday morning, the authority said, and arrived at the scene 13 minutes later.

The fire broke out on the ground floor of the structure, Major Geoffrey Casu, a spokesman for the National Federation of Firefighters, told French broadcaster LCI on Friday. Because smoke filled internal evacuation routes, evacuations were only possible through the exterior of the building using ladders, which complicated the rescue, Casu said.

The inferno went on to engulf the top three floors of the building, according to BFMTV. It was put out at around 6 a.m.

Rida, another resident who lived just in front of the apartment building, told BFMTV he and his child were awakened by the chaos at about 3 in the morning. Police had blocked the route and firefighters were already on the scene. He said he heard a father screaming “my children, my children, save my children.”

The source of the fire is still being investigated, and local prosecutors said in a statement that an investigation has been opened to determine exactly what caused the fire. Nothing, including “criminal intent,” has been ruled out, the statement said.

Technical teams from the judicial police and forensic and fire experts are on the site. Victim support associations have also been mobilized, the statement said.

The prefect of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region, Pascal Mailhos, the mayor of Vaulx-en-Valin, Hélène Geoffrey, and a public prosecutor Nicolas Jacquet traveled to the scene of the incident, the regional authority said. Darmanin and Olivier Klein, the French minister of housing, visited the scene and met with first responders later on Friday.

According to GiveMeSport, Arsenal is working on planning its squad for the second half of the season and one of the names that is sounding strong to arrive in the coming weeks is that of Leroy Sané. The objective is to reinforce their offensive zone in order to offer Mikel Arteta as many variants as possible.

9:52 AM3 hours ago

On the other hand, Lyon faced Nice in the last matchday played in Ligue 1 1-1 so the fans could not go to the season break with the joy of a victory. 9:47 AM3 hours ago

Arsenal faced Wolves in their last Premier League duel where the Gunners managed to win 2-0 and continue to increase their lead in the league as leaders of the general table, and have been considered as the number 1 candidate to win the trophy in England. Arsenal and Lyon have met on 3 occasions (1 win for the Gunners, 1 draw and 1 win for Lyon) where the scales are completely even. In terms of goals, 3 have been in favor of Arsenal and 3 in favor of Lyon. Their last duel dates back to the 2019 season in a friendly where Lyon beat Arsenal 2-1.

8:57 AM4 hours ago

Lyon will use this match to continue improving, find details and fix mistakes within the team, as they are currently in eighth place in the overall Ligue 1 table with 6 wins, 3 draws and 6 defeats. Likewise, in their last match they drew 1-1 with Nice, a good result for their current situation, however, this does not discourage them to return with the desire to come back for the second part of the season and try to reach European positions.

8:52 AM4 hours ago

Arsenal closed the first part of the season or before stopping for the World Cup with a victory at home against Wolverhampton Wolves by a score of 0-2 and as far as the Premier League is concerned closed in position 1 of the overall table with 12 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat, being a statistic that puts them as the number 1 contenders for the Premier League title and for now they are securing European places, in addition, they are qualified in the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League so the possibility of winning this season’s championship is high. Arsenal will have to come back stronger than ever to continue to secure their place as Premier League leaders and try to increase their advantage over the other teams in the quest for the championship.

8:47 AM4 hours ago

The 2022-23 season is just a few days away from returning after having stopped engines due to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which is why the teams must start preparing for the resumption of the season as there are still dates to play before the end of the year, and also start working with an alternate squad to the one presented at the beginning of the season as they must temporarily cover the absences of players who went to participate in the World Cup and have not been able to train in rhythm with their corresponding team. In this match, Arsenal will face Lyon in a friendly match in order to get ready for the restart of the Premier League and Boxing Day, so it will be important to test the players and the rhythm of the Gunners’ team.

Barcelona v Lyon: Women’s Champions League final 2022 – live! | Women’s Champions League

36 min After another rapid break, Hegerberg whips a shot that is beaten away by the flying Panos! Lyon are destroying Barcelona in transition.

Catarina Macario has made it 3-0 to Lyon after more outstanding play from Hegerberg. A desperate, weary clearance from Paredes, in her own six-yard box, was blocked by Malard. She gave the ball to Hegerberg, who played a quick-witted first-time pass across goal towards the unmarked Macario.

Macario miscontrolled the ball, as if in shock that she should find herself four yards out with an open goal, but the ball rolled off the post and into the net.

GOAL! Barcelona 0-3 Lyon (Macario 33)

Barcelona are falling apart!

32 min Another chance for Hegerberg! A rubbish ball from Leon was intecepted, and suddenly Hegerberg was one v one with Paredes, the last defender. This time Paredes did well to hold Hegerberg up, and eventually she shot over the bar from the edge of the D.

Water break It’s really warm in Turin, almost 30 degrees, and the players are having a drink.

28 min There’s the second one!

The @UWCL's all-time top scorer, Ada Hegerberg, doubles @OLFeminin's lead! 🎯

27 min This is pulsating stuff. It’s not going to end 2-0, I’ll tell you that for nothing.

25 min Hegerberg almost makes it three! Paredes played a dreadful, short backpass that was collected by Hegerberg. She tried to go round the outrushing Panos, who lunged feet first to make a vital tackle. Barcelona are a bag of nerves in defence.

It was another high-class goal from Lyon. The indefatigable Bacha played a slick one-two with Malard on the left and arced a beautiful cross towards the far post. The keeper Panos didn’t know whether to stick or twist, and Hegerberg pulled away from Leon to head into the net with utter certainty. She’s done it to Barcelona again!

GOAL! Barcelona 0-2 Lyon (Hegerberg 23)

There might be panic now: Lyon have gone 2-0 up!

22 min Barcelona can’t have gone behind too often in the last couple of seasons. So far there have been no signs of panic or frustration, though that might change if it’s still 1-0 after an hour.

21 min “Couple early thoughts,” says Travis Giblin. “First, WHAT A STRIKE by Henry. As a card-carrying member of the Irish nation I struggle to cheer for any French player named Henry, but that was incredible. Also, in the lead up to the goal, what an effort by Hegerberg. She was clearly missed by Lyon last season.”

Yes, I was so distracted by Henry’s strike that I forgot to praise Hegerberg for holding the ball up in the first place. She did superbly.

20 min Hegerberg wafts a bouncing ball wide of goal from about 22 yards. Lyon aren’t having much of the ball but look dangerous when they do get it.

17 min “The WSL has come on leaps and bounds but these two teams are two steps ahead,” says Redmond Grimes. “It could be a while before we see the likes of Chelsea, Man City or Arsenal win this.”

Indeed. You’d think three years minimum, even with the money in the WSL.

15 min: Great defending from Bacha! Rolfo runs at the substitute Buchanan and drives a low cross towards Hermoso, whose attempted shot is blocked brilliantly by Bacha in the six-yard box. Barcelona have responded admirably to the shock of going behind.

14 min: Lyon substitution Poor Ellie Carpenter is stretchered off to be replaced by Kadeisha Buchanan.

13 min The Lyon right-back Ellie Carpenter is down and in a lot of pain. I think she twisted her knee, and at one stage she was slapping the ground in distress.

12 min Here’s that heatseeker from Amandine Henry. It seemed to float forever before rippling the far corner of the net.

TAKE. A. BOW. 🔥

11 min: Good save from Endler! Barcelona are starting to stir. Bonmati finds space on the left of the area and lays thge ball back to Hermoso, who pokes a shot that is pawed away by Endler. My first thought was that Hermoso might have done better, though I’d like to see a replay before upbraiding her in a public forum.

10 min A half chance for Torrejon, who heads a left-wing corner over the bar from around 12 yards.

9 min “Dear sir,” writes the very polite Inka. “The husband and I were wondering why coaches and officials today wore bouquets on their lapels. Google didn’t throw up any answers, nor does it seem to be a holiday. Are Scots just way more fashionable than the rest of the world?”

Well yes, we are, but I’m afraid I don’t have a definite answer to the original question.

8 min Barcelona appealed for a foul on Putellas in the build-up, but it was a fair challenge from Henry. The rest was entirely preposterous.

Pick that out! It all started when Henry won a 50/50 with Putellas on the Lyon left, 35 yards from goal. Then she pushed the ball infield, into space, and launched a booming shot that beat the flying Panos and nestled in the far corner. What a fricking goal!

GOAL! Barcelona 0-1 Lyon (Henry 6)

3 min Cascarino beats Rolfo with ease on the right and stands up a cross that is headed off target by the backpedalling Malard. Lyon have made a fast start.

2 min Horan is fouled 35 yards from goal, which allows Lyon to send Renard and Mbock Bathy forward. In fact Bacha goes straight for goal, curling a few yards wide. Panos had it covered.

34 seconds Barcelona were 1-0 up at this stage last year.

1 min Peep peep! Lyon get the match under way, kicking from right to left as we watch.

The players pose for the pre-match photos, and then the captains Alexia Putellas and Wendie Renard go through the formalities. It’s time for the 2022 Champions League final!

A bit of domestic news

“According to the Barça Twitter account, the fans are singing their boring ‘Oh le le, Oh la la’ song,” begins Charles Antaki, “when this was a golden opportunity to actually use the ‘…. by far the greatest team the world has ever seen’ song with some degree of plausibility, at least as compared to it being sung by fans of, for example and with the greatest respect and so on, Watford.”

Thanks Will, hello everyone. Before the players emerge from the tunnel, let’s have a reminder of the teams.

Barcelona (4-3-3) Panos; Torrejon, Paredes, Leon, Rolfo; Bonmati, Guijarro, Putellas; Graham Hansen, Hermoso, Caldentey.
Substitutes: Font, Meritxell Munoz, Serrano, Pina, Ouahabi, Pereira, Crnogorcevic, Oshoala, Martens, Syrstad Engen.

Lyon (4-3-3) Endler; Carpenter, Renard, Mbock Bathy, Bacha; Horan, Henry, Macario; Cascarino, Hegerberg, Malard.
Substitutes: Bouhaddi, Holmgren, Morroni, Gunnarsdottir, Le Sommer, Egurrola, Van De Donk, Sombath, Laurent, Buchanan, Cayman, Benyahia.

Referee Lina Lehtovaara (Finland).

It’s been a pleasure, albeit a brief one, but it’s time to hand back over to Rob Smyth. He’s fresh from covering the Scottish Cup final, so go easy on him.

A refresher on how the finalists got here. Barcelona utterly bossed the group stage, winning all six games against Arsenal, Hoffenheim and Danish side HB Køge. They went on to beat Real Madrid 8-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, before a slightly tighter semi-final against Wolfsburg in which they won the first leg 5-1 but lost the second leg 2-0.

Lyon, meanwhile, won all but one of their games at the group stage, with a sole defeat inflicted by Bayern Munich. They squeezed past Juventus in the quarters, triumphing 4-3 on aggregate, before overcoming PSG, their domestic rivals, in the semis.

Along with the supporters who have travelled to Turin, the Blaugranes will be cheered on by thousands back home. A large crowd has gathered to watch the match on the Plaça de Catalunya in the centre of Barcelona.

Mentrestant, a Plaça Catalunya… 👏

A reminder of how to watch the big game. It will be broadcast on ITV4, with coverage starting from 5.30pm. That’s in – oh, wow, is that the time? – just under two minutes.

As with the rest of the Women’s Champions League this season, it will also be available to stream live on DAZN’s YouTube channel. Just in case you’re Extremely Online and prefer that to watching on the television.

The warm-ups have begun, with Lyon taking to the field to put the final touches on their pre-match preparations.

Preamble

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Champions League final between Barcelona and Lyon in Turin. The best sport – the really, really, really good stuff – needs no hype or ballyhoo. This game can be summarised in less than 50 characters, never mind 140: the reigning champions v the perennial champions.

Lyon have won this tournament a record seven times including five in a row from 2016-20. But Barcelona succeeded them last year and go into tonight’s final as very strong favourites. Their record in all competitions this season is from the realms of fantasist football: P44 W43 D0 L1 F210 A19.

May I stop you there. Could you kindly go back and look at those numbers again: 44 games, 43 wins, TWO HUNDRED AND TEN GOALS! Their team includes Alexia Putellas, the best player in the world, as well as Jenni Hermoso, Caroline Hansen, Aitana Bonmatí and a load of other stars. When our expert panel voted for the 100 best female footballers in the world at the end of last year, six of the top 10 were Barcelona players.

This time last year they sliced and diced Chelsea in the final in Gothenburg, scoring all four goals in the first 36 minutes, and Lyon’s first job will be to get through the first 10 minutes unscathed.

Part of Barcelona’s journey (drink!) to the top was a 4-1 hammering by Lyon in the 2019 final. They were the victims of an even faster start that night, with all four goals coming in the first half-hour. That included a hat-trick from the great Ada Hegerberg, whose presence tonight could give the Barcelona defence the heebie-jeebies.

A win for Barcelona would complete their journey (drink!) from contenders to undisputed champions. In one fell swoop they can put 2019 to bed, retain the Champions League, beat Lyon for the first time in their history and prove, beyond even unreasonable doubt, that they are the world’s best team.

Lyon would love to make the picture a whole lot fuzzier. If they win, last season might be dismissed as a one-off rather than a changing of the guard. But for now, Lyon are in the unusual position of starting as underdogs. They are in the process of recovering from a miserable 2020-21, in which Paris Saint-Germain ended their long reigns as French and European champions (14 and five years respectively). Hegerberg missed the whole season with an ACL injury, so you could understand if Lyon put an asterisk against their underachievement.

Lyon got some revenge by beating PSG in this year’s Champions League semi-finals, and will regain the French title with a game to spare if they avoid defeat in Paris next weekend. It’s too early to say they are back to their best, but they are at least back where they belong – in a Champions League final.

Kick off 6pm.

The whistle goes, and Lyon traipse off to a few whistles. West Ham have been magnificent, soaking up pressure, drawing Lyon’s sting, and suddenly blooming into life towards the end of the half. They’ve got one foot in the semi-finals … though of course there’s still a long way to go.

20.46

45 min: There will be one added minute.

20.45

GOAL! Lyon 0-2 West Ham (Rice 44); agg 1-3

They don’t make it to the break! Johnson romps down the left. His cross is only half cleared. The ball breaks to Rice, in a pocket of space. Rice takes his time, sets himself, and pearls a low shot goalwards. It takes a nick off Lukeba and flies into the bottom left! West Ham are in dreamland here!

20.44

43 min: This is all West Ham now. Lyon are rocking, and could do with hearing the half-time whistle before conceding another.

20.43

41 min: Dawson takes an accidental whack in the chops from Ekambi. It’s a free kick to West Ham nonetheless, out on the right. Coufal knocks it to Bowen on the right. Bowen loops long. Soucek, to the left of the six-yard box, heads across the face of goal. Emerson high-kicks to hoof away, just in time, with Antonio and Rice waiting to head home from close range.

20.40

40 min: Fornals and Antonio nearly open up a stunned Lyon down the left with a crisp one-two. Not quite, but the extra spring in West Ham’s step is already evident.

20.39

GOAL! Lyon 0-1 West Ham (Dawson 38); agg 1-2

Fornals whips the corner to the near post. Dawson stoops and steers a header into the net from close range. Easy as that!

20.38

37 min: West Ham nearly score a freakish goal. Antonio chests along pass down on the edge of the box. Bowen slips, then gathers himself and shoots. The ball balloons off Denayer, over a stranded Pollersbeck, and nearly bounces into the unguarded net. Just wide left. But never mind, because from the resulting corner on the left …

20.36

35 min: Coufal steps across Emerson as the Lyon man makes his way down the left. He concedes a free kick, and also takes an accidental knee in the clackers. To quote George Costanza, that’s gotta hurt. Happily, he’s up again quickly enough, and in good working order to boot, and nothing comes of the free kick.

20.34

33 min: Ndombele clatters into Fornals out on the left. Fornals sends the free kick long. Dawson and Soucek contest a high ball at the far stick, but bowl Emerson to the floor. The whistle goes for a pressure-releasing free kick to Lyon.

20.33

32 min: Under no pressure whatsoever, Lukeba slices the ball out for a West Ham corner. Fornals takes. Diop flicks on at the near post, but towards nobody in particular. Goal kick.

20.31

30 min: Faivre takes the free kick himself. Diop takes charge of a crowded box, rising highest to bash a header clear.

20.30

29 min: Faivre is brought down by Johnson out on the right. A free kick in a dangerous position, just to the side of the West Ham area. Lyon load the box.

20.29

28 min: Coufal crosses from the right. Gusto should deal with the ball at the far post, but mistimes his jump. The ball breaks to Fornals … but not in such a way that he can send a shot goalwards from 12 yards. Neither defence looks particularly convincing right now.

20.27

26 min: Gusto crosses from the right. The ball clanks off Dembele, six yards out, and very nearly squeaks into the bottom left. Areola is wise to the danger and gets down to claim. West Ham fairly fortunate that Dembele wasn’t sure of his bearings there.

20.24

24 min: Antonio jinks in from the left and wedges a cute pass towards Bowen, coming in from the right, six yards out. It’s not an easy chance, but such is Bowen’s form this season, you’d expect him to slam home from a tight angle. But he can only stretch to volley into the side netting. A chance.

20.23

22 min: Diop is booked for a late clatter on the influential Ekambi. A long 70 minutes ahead for the reserve centre back.

20.22

21 min: Ekambi zips down the right, reaches the byline, and cuts back for Dembele, whose first-time low shot is blocked. West Ham go up the other end, Fornals swinging deep from the right, Antonio straining every sinew to cushion a header down for … nobody. He can be forgiven for expecting a runner from deep to be on the end of that.

20.20

19 min: Some mild panic in the West Ham box when Soucek’s clearance is blocked. The ball breaks to Dembele, who can’t sort his feet out on the penalty spot and falls over. He wants a penalty, but it’s not a foul, and in any case the flag pops up for offside. This match is nice and lively.

20.18

18 min: Johnson crosses from the left. Emerson’s clearing header is poor. The ball drops to Fornals, who shapes a shot towards the bottom right. It’s on target, but lacks power. Pollersbeck gathers.

20.17

16 min: Aouar rolls a pass down the left for Ekambi. He hits it way too hard, and it looks like flying out for a goal kick, but Ekambi turns on the jets to stop the ball on the byline, then turns Coufal inside out like a freshly laundered pair of socks, turning tail back up the pitch then immediately spinning around again. Having made space out of nothing, he whips into the middle. Diop deals with the cross. What skill from Ekambi, though.

20.14

14 min: Ekambi curls a glorious low cross along the corridor of uncertainty from the right. West Ham are extremely fortunate that Dembele is on the back foot at the time. That ball was begging to be slammed home from close range. One hell of a cross.

20.13

12 min: The winner of this tie will face either Barcelona or Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-final. Right now, it’s the German side who are going through. They’ve taken an early lead at Camp Nou, Filip Kostic slotting a penalty after just four minutes.

Lyon’s Romain Faivre gets away from Pablo Fornals. Photograph: Adam Davy/PA

20.12

10 min: Lyon go up the other end and nearly take the lead … again. Gusto crosses low from the right. Dembele can’t connect at the far post. Aouar has a dig, but a combination of Coufal and Dawson bundles the ball away. Lyon want a penalty for a non-existent handball. Nope!

20.10

9 min: Bowen is brought down on the right wing. The resulting free kick finds Lanzini further down the flank. His cross isn’t all that. But West Ham come again, Coufal nearly finding Lanzini in the middle with a whipped cross from the right. Lyon clear their lines. Better from West Ham.

20.08

7 min: Mendes drags a shot wide left of the West Ham goal from distance. That was never troubling Areola, but David Moyes is extremely unhappy with his team anyway. Stern words are issued with crisp, clear diction at volume.

20.06

5 min: Ekambi dribbles into the West Ham box from the left. He drops a shoulder and sends a fierce snapshot towards the bottom left. Areola is beaten, but the ball clacks off the base of the post and away. Wow. An early escape for the Hammers.

20.04

4 min: Lyon are hogging the ball, but going nowhere in particular. West Ham hold their shape confidently, as David Moyes teams tend to do.

20.03

2 min: Lyon calm things down with some early possession. The 50,000-odd fans inside the stadium continue to make a rare old racket.

20.02

Lyon get the ball rolling after the taking of the knee. Smoke from some firecrackers drifts across the pitch. What an atmosphere! And it’s a bubble very nearly burst immediately by West Ham, as Fornals chases a long speculative ball down the middle. He reaches the edge of the box and drags a shot across the face of the Lyon goal and out for a free kick. Fourteen seconds, that took … though the flag belatedly goes up for offside. Still, what a statement of intent by the Hammers!

19.59

The teams are out! One heck of an atmosphere at the Stade des Lumières. Blue, white and red flags flutter prominently in the stands. Well, this is France. C’est fantastique! Lyon are in their first-choice white with blue and red vertical sash; West Ham sport their favourite colours too. Claret. Well, this is France. C’est fantastique! “The 2006 Cup Final was a pretty big match for West Ham as well,” writes Ian Melven. Ha. Yes, somehow I forgot about the Gerrard Final. My bad. “A fantastic match for the neutral and one that took me at least 10 years to be able to watch again.”

19.49

Lyon boss Peter Bosz also has a word with BT. “We have to win. We want to win. We are doing really well in Europe, not in our own league, so it’s important for us tonight. At this level you need your fans, and we have to earn their trust. Without them, it is not possible.”

19.48

Anyway, back to this match, and here’s what Davie Moyes has been telling BT Sport. “We’re patching together a wee bit at the back, but they’ve all played together, they’ve played in this competition, so let’s hope they can perform tonight. The quarter final of this cup? Fantastic. For us to be at this level, it can be a little bit underestimated how far we’ve come and how well we’re doing. We’re in with a great chance tonight.”

19.46

There’s already been one big statement posted by a Premier League club in Europe tonight. Leicester City have come from behind at PSV Eindhoven to make it through to the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League. They were trailing to Eran Zahavi’s 27th-minute goal until James Maddison slotted an Ayoze Perez pullback on 77 minutes. Then with two minutes left on the clock, Leicester flicked a switch and suddenly turned into Swansea City circa 2011. An astonishing Rodgersian pass-and-move sequence that suddenly gathered steam down the left, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall releasing Ademola Lookman with a forensic pass, Paston Daka shooting, Ricardo Pereira steaming in from the other flank to slam home the rebound. As good a team goal as you’ll see in Europe all season. They’ll play either Bodø/Glimt or Roma in the semis.

19.11

Issa Diop replaces the stricken Kurt Zouma at centre-half for West Ham, while Ben Johnson stands in at left-back for the suspended Aaron Cresswell. There are two other changes to the XI that started the game in London last week: Vladimír Coufal and Manuel Lanzini replace Ryan Fredericks and Said Benrahma, both of whom drop to the bench.

Brazilian Lucas Paqueta is on the Lyon bench despite Uefa earlier announcing he was out after testing positive for Covid-19. He’s one of three changes to the side sent out for the first leg. Julian Pollersbeck replaces the injured Anthony Lopes in goal. Jérôme Boateng drops to the bench along with Paqueta; Jason Denayer and Karl Toko Ekambi take their places.

18.30

Preamble

Those who don’t pay close attention to the history of West Ham United may be surprised to hear that the Hammers have a decent record in Europe. They were the second British club to lift the Cup Winners’ Cup, in 1965 – Moore, Hurst and Peters, all that – and reached the final again in 1976 with a side containing Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard Sr. They also won the Intertoto Cup in 1999, about which you can make your own value judgement, but it is something.

It’s all in the distant past, though, and a new generation are on a quest to make a mark of their own. David Moyes’ men have already knocked out the six-time winners Sevilla, and in the first leg of this tie against Olympique Lyonnais at the London Stadium, ground out a 1-1 draw despite playing more than half of the game with ten men, Aaron Cresswell having been sent packing just before the break. So they’ll be confident in their ability to get what they need tonight at the Stade des Lumières in Lyon.

Lyon will have high hopes themselves, having seen off Champions League rejects Porto in the last round. They’re stranded in mid-table in Ligue 1, but can boast recent European success, having reached the semi-finals of the Champions League just two seasons ago. There’s no major European trophy on their roll of honour, but they did win the 1997 Intertoto Cup, about which you can make your own value judgement, but it is something.

The winners of this tie will play Eintracht Frankfurt or Barcelona in the semi-final. That tie is also delicately poised at 1-1 and will be decided tonight at Camp Nou. Can the Hammers get a result in France and set up what would arguably be their biggest game since the 1980 FA Cup final? We’ll find out soon enough, after extra time and penalties if required. Kick off is at 8pm BST, 9pm in Lyon. It’s on!

West Ham v Lyon: Europa League quarter-final, first leg – live! | Europa League

20:57

On a happier note, here’s Joe Pearson in Indianapolis. “I thought,” he says, “it was THE LAW that all musical references in West Ham MBMs must be Iron Maiden related. Or maybe we’ve just entered a brave new world.”

20:55

Half-time! West Ham 0-0 Lyon

You wait 45 minutes for something to happen, and then it’s a shocker. As Cresswell got his straight red, a camera zoomed in on Moussa Dembele – who was winking. This match may have been ruined before it has even got going.

20:53

45+5 min: Lyon waste the free kick, but pick up a corner. It’s been a long two minutes.

20:51

Red card! Cresswell (West Ham, 45+2)

This is highly controversial. Dembele was away, Cresswell did get a touch with his hand, but the red card seems very harsh.

20:49

45+1 min: We’re into the first of two added minutes.

20:48

45 min: West Ham spend a minute in Lyon’s half, for once, and get their reward as Bowen wins a free kick on the right wing. Lyon clear it easily enough.

20:46

41 min: Declan Rice makes a mistake! He aims a back header, down into the ground, and doesn’t get enough on it, allowing Lyon to take another of their long shots – which brings only a corner. West Ham break with Benrahma down the left. He thinks he’s won a corner too, but the ref gives a goal kick.

20:43

39 min: Lyon go back to the patient build-up, which seems to be their default. West Ham escape with the long ball. Emerson and Fredericks go for a 50-50 and end up nose to nose. The words “Fuck you” may have been uttered (by Emerson).

“I hope you’re well!” says Adam Kline-Schoder. Can’t complain. “I am watching the Eintracht Frankfurt-Barcelona match — since you didn’t ask: 0-0 but Piqué is off injured already and Frankfurt should really be 2-0 up — and am keeping tabs on the West Ham-Lyon game through your MBM. I saw the photo at the top of the page, and it got me thinking: why do teams change their kits for European competition? West Ham’s shorts are usually white at home but here are claret (I believe Leicester do the same with blue), and Manchester City have their weird digital numbers on their Champions League kits. Is that unique to British teams? Is it sponsorship nonsense? Enquiring minds (read: my mind) want to know.” I’m not sure! So I’m throwing it out to the floor.

20:38

36 min: There’s a delay as Jerome Boating gets some treatment for what looks like cramp, odd as it may sound.

Jerome Boateng goes down with cramp. In the first half. Hmmm. Photograph: Andy Rain/EPA

20:37

32 min: We have another shot on target! From Declan Rice, not tumbling but taking part in a training-ground corner routine. He has to take it with his left foot, and it’s the opposite of that shot from Ndombele: precision without power. West Ham then win another corner, only to do nothing with it.

20:34

30 min: A third of the game has somehow slipped by. Lyon have had twice as much of the ball as West Ham, but have also conceded the only shot on target.

An email! From Peter Oh. “I suppose West Ham and Rolling Stones fans reckon that it’s only the Europa League, but they like it.” Ha. “Now that you’ve mentioned the Stones having played this ground, I’ll be keeping a close eye on Declan Rice whenever he approaches the Lyon box. If he goes down too easy, I’ll be forced to make a Tumbling Rice joke. In any event, it’s nice to see the visitors play with Gusto.”

You can’t always get what you want as Said Benrahma fires wide. Photograph: Kirsty Wigglesworth/AP

20:31

28 min: A free kick to West Ham, chipped into the box, but it leads only to a free kick for Lyon as Gusto goes down.

20:29

26 min: Lyon go back to knocking it around. Eventually Ndombele gets bored and has a crack from 25 yards – all power and no precision.

20:27

23 min: Suddenly it’s end to end as Lyon answer another long ball from West Ham with one of their own. As usual, nothing comes of it bar a feeble appeal for a penalty as Fredericks stops Auouar in his tracks.

20:23

20 min: Dembele runs onto a through ball, and he’s probably onside, but Areola is alert to the danger and gets a booming clearance in.

20:22

18 min: Lyon have a promising attack, but it ends with West Ham coming close. Rice, clearing up after a poor cross, picks out Antonio, who flicks on, then gets the ball back in the inside-right channel. Again, though, the angle is too tight.

Michail Antonio goes close for West Ham. Photograph: Adam Davy/PA

20:19

16 min: West Ham come alive! It’s another long ball, but a pinpoint one, from Dawson. Benrahma controls it on the run and gets a firm shot away, but the angle is too tight.

20:16

14 min: The game has developed a pattern: patience and latticework passing from Lyon, long balls and high pressing from West Ham, cutting edge from neither.

Said Benrahma and Lima Lucas Paqueta battle for the ball. Photograph: Adam Davy/PA

20:13

9 min: A shot! From a Lyon player – about 30 yards out, instantly blocked. But they are warming up, and they play their first threatening cross, whipped in from the left, well defended by West Ham.

20:10

8 min: You know how some matches set off at a thunderous pace? This is not one of them.

20:09

7 min: Lyon make it into the box, with Dembele holding the ball up well, Lukaku-style, but again the final ball is poor.

20:08

5 min: Gusto, Lyon’s pacey right-winger, has plenty of time to get a cross in, but he overcooks it.

20:06

3 min: Lyon are being leisurely, West Ham more direct. Antonio gets his head on a punt from Areola but can’t quite find Bowen with his flick-on.

20:03

1 min: Lyon get the party started with some neat little passes.

20:02

Declan Rice bumps fists with the Lyon captain – Moussa Dembele. Rice needs to avoid a yellow if he wants to play in the second leg.

20:00

West Ham have won their last four at home in all competitions, their best such sequence for ten years. But then Lyon have won their last six away matches in the Europa League. Something’s gotta give.

19:58

The crowd are absolutely loving it. The London Stadium is rocking as it hasn’t rocked since the Rolling Stones played there a few years ago.

Come on you Irons! Photograph: Simon Dael/REX/Shutterstock

19:57

Bubbles are being blown. And sung.

19:48

David Moyes is talking to BT, sounding calm. “Slightly different game,” he says, “It’s the first leg. We’d like to win, but it’s not settled tonight.”

He says he picked Ryan Fredericks (over Ben Johnson) partly because of the pace of Karl Toko-Ekambi – who, as he doesn’t add, is on the bench.

19:10

Teams: Lyon unchanged

Lyon (4-2-3-1?): Lopes; Gusto, Boateng, Lukeba, Emerson; Mendes, Ndombele; Faivre, Paqueta, Aouar; Dembele.

Subs: Pollersbeck, Da Silva, Denayer, Barcola, Henrique, Dubois, Reine-Adelaide, Barcola, Kadewere, Tete, Toko-Ekambi.

19:05

Teams: West Ham as expected

West Ham United (4-2-3-1): Areola; Fredericks, Dawson, Zouma, Cresswell; Soucek, Rice; Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals; Antonio.

Subs: Fabianski, Johnson, Coufal, Masuaku, Diop, Alese, Noble, Kral, Perkins, Randolph, Vlasic, Yarmolenko.

19:00

Preamble

Evening everyone and welcome to West Ham’s biggest European game since … well, I make it 1981. That one didn’t go too well: after storming into the quarter-finals of the Cup-Winners’ Cup, they went and lost 4-1 at home to Dinamo Tbilisi. But that was then, so long ago that one of their regulars was Frank Lampard (Senior). And this is now, when they’ve just seen off Sevilla, who pretty much own the Europa League.

Manchester United, eat your heart out. David Moyes is not only looking down on United in the league table: he’s still in Europe and they’re not. But he won’t be allowing himself much of a gloat because his team face a tricky assignment here. At 538.com, Nate Silver’s prediction machine, West Ham are favoured to make it through this round, but only by 55 per cent to 45.

Lyon waltzed through their group, winning five games and losing none. Last time they came to the UK, in September, they beat the mighty Rangers. They’re erratic in Ligue 1, where they lie ninth, but efficient in the Europa: in the last round, against Porto, they won 1-0 away before drawing 1-1 at home. It could be the loudest night at the London Stadium since the win over Sevilla.

Kick-off is at 8pm, so I’ll be back soon after 7 with the teams.

French President Emmanuel Macron hit by egg thrown from crowd in Lyon

The egg “bounced off Macron’s shoulder and burst on the floor right in front of me,” Florence Lago, a journalist for French publication Lyon Mag, told CNN.

Lyon Mag shared a video of the incident at the SIRHA food and hospitality fair on its Twitter account. The clip showed the egg bouncing off Macron’s shoulder before the camera panned to officials detaining a man in the crowd.

The motivation behind the incident remains unclear. Lago said she saw a young man throw the egg but she did not hear him shout anything. She said security officers immediately escorted the man from the premises.

An Elysée Palace spokesperson, who was with Macron at the time, told CNN the incident was being overblown.

“The President walked around for two hours, he was warmly welcomed and everything was calm. There is nothing to say about it because it did not disrupt his walking around,” the spokesperson said, adding: “I was next to the President, I can tell you there is no story.”

Macron was previously targeted with an egg in 2017, when he was a presidential candidate. The egg cracked on his head in that incident.

In June this year, he was slapped in the face by a man in a crowd as he spoke to the public during a visit to southeastern France. Macron’s security detail quickly intervened, tackling the man while pulling the President away from the crowd barrier.

With France’s presidential elections less than a year away, Macron is on a charm offensive with voters. In June, his party performed poorly in regional elections, which were being closely watched ahead the presidential vote next April. However, given the low voter turnout, political experts said it was hard to draw conclusions.
