The 4 Zodiac Signs Who Fall Out Of Love & End Relationships Starting January 9, 2023

As Mars turns direct within the air sign of Gemini, the feeling of having to bide your time within relationships that have already ended ends.

Mars is the planet of motivation and action, and its retrograde motion has made it almost impossible to do anything other than hold space for yourself and the situation.

You have had to reflect deeply on what is happening within yourself and the relationship.

You have had a chance to learn how to prioritize your needs and be within the uncomfortable moments that long-term relationships often hold.

But, most importantly, you have been given time to decide what you want from love and a relationship.

As Mars turns direct in Gemini, you will feel a release.

Whatever has felt restrictive will suddenly live, and those conversations or actions you need to have suddenly become clear.

It is a time to celebrate your growth, to absorb what you have learned and then take that and finally allow yourself to move ahead in all the ways you now know you need to.

The four zodiac signs who fall out of love and end relationships starting January 9 – 15, 2023:

1. Gemini

(May 21 – June 20)

Mars, the planet of action and motivation, has been retrograde in your zodiac sign of Gemini since October. As a fact-paced air sign, you tend to make quick decisions without always going into your motivating factors. You prefer activity over the steadiness of working through demanding situations, which is what you have had to do recently. Instead of just quickly ending your relationship or even simply not calling them back, you have had to sit with the situation.

Since October and even likely before, you have been trying to decide if the relationship you are in is one that you want to continue or if, instead, it is something you know you must end.

Instead of throwing it all away when it got challenging or lacked the fun you tend to need in relationships, you have had to sit with it to reflect on what is happening and learn how to exist within a situation that feels undone. While this relationship is ending, you have been able to change how you view yourself and your relationships.

Instead of just seeing it as their fault or something attributed solely to their actions, you have understood the part you play in what has happened. You can see that sometimes ending things right away or jumping ship into a new relationship does not help you overall. Because of that, you are going to be approaching things differently. As Mars turns direct, you will finally be able to trust your feelings, decide and transition your life into a brand-new chapter.

2. Virgo

(August 23 – September 22)

Your sign of Virgo is known as a healing sign. One with immense power to heal yourself and those around you. However, on the other side, you can exhibit extreme control over yourself, your life and those in it. This comes from not feeling in control of yourself or your emotions, so instead of tapping into that healing energy, you tend to focus wherever you find that sense of validation.

This week as Mars turns direct in Gemini, you will become more focused on your career than your relationship or love life. While focusing on your professional dreams is important, in this case, it will feel more like a distraction because it is easier to control the outcome at work than it is to do that within your romantic life.

This week, you will feel more distanced or absent from your relationship. While Mars will not be in this area of your life forever, it will take center stage until the end of March. It is either a time of separation, turmoil or an overall ending in your romantic life. Mercury is also retrograde in Capricorn, which activates energy around marriages, committed relationships and even family.

Adding this into the mix means you are rethinking your relationship arrangements, whether a full-on separation or changing the agreement within your connection. You need to get out there and feel you are making some progress, but this week it may end up being at the expense of your relationship.

3. Aries

(March 21 – April 19)

Beginning this week, everything you have been putting off will finally feel ready to be shared and started. Just a few weeks ago, Jupiter, the planet of abundance and expansion, shifted into Aries, prompting you to honor your needs and feelings more deeply.

This is the end of doing things solely for others or compromising your wants and dreams because, somehow, it feels like that is what you must do. Jupiter in Aries helps you focus again on your dreams and beliefs regarding love, which means that it will also be the time when you start putting yourself first. As the first sign of the zodiac, this is only sometimes something that you have a challenging time with. However, the past few years have left you almost unrecognizable to yourself.

While challenges in a relationship are always because of the two people within it, you are starting to see how this connection has also led to your downfall in many ways. This week Juno joins Jupiter in areas that bring the focus to what you want and need from marriage or a serious commitment.

Juno governs contracts, agreements and even marriage. Instead of thinking you need to stay together because of family or finances, you will be more apt to honor your truth.

As much as you have been moving through a place of acceptance with all of this, you have felt blocked in many ways when bringing up any conversations about it. As Mars turns direct in Gemini, activating your communication sector, this is the week those conversations finally come to light, allowing you to end what you already know is a part of your past.

4. Leo

(July 23 – August 22)

With Venus in Aquarius, your polarizing sign and the one representing romantic relationships, it may seem like things should be easy when it comes to love, yet that is only one part of the story. As much as Aquarius energy can bring about positive changes within your love life, it also represents the challenge of learning to remain steady within yourself and life while in a relationship with another. Venus in Aquarius is often more concerned with itself than tending to a relationship, even if it finds value in connection.

Combined with Mars turning direct in Gemini and activating your friendships and inner social circle, you could be feeling more of a draw of spending time with other people outside of your relationship, especially if it has seemed there have been challenges within this connection recently.

You are just starting to get back out there and find confidence in building a new relationship that reflects your growth, but it does not mean the connection you are in right now is completely reflective of that. With Jupiter and Juno in Aries bringing new experiences and adventures, you may have to leave where you are to find the relationship you are craving. It is a busy time for your love life, but you must clearly see things and your emotions.

Damar Hamlin’s breathing tube removed, Buffalo safety FaceTimes Bills: ‘Love you boys’

When the Buffalo Bills returned to practice Thursday, players held up 3’s and made hearts with their hands as they thought about their friend and teammate in a Cincinnati hospital.

When Damar Hamlin finally spoke to them the next day via FaceTime, after having his breathing tube removed overnight, he needed just three words to reciprocate: “Love you boys.”

Players stood. They cheered. They called back in joy to Hamlin on the large screen in the team’s meeting room.

“We got our boy, man,” left tackle Dion Dawkins later told reporters. “It’s all that matters. We got our boy. The excitement was beautiful. It was amazing. It has given us so much energy, so much bright, high spirits, whatever you want to call it. It is giving it to us. To see that boy’s face, to see him smile, see him (flex) in the camera, it was everything. And then to hear him talk to us, it was literally everything.

People are also reading…

“And that’s what we needed. Literally, that’s all we needed.”

It was a call they needed since the moment the 24-year-old safety went into cardiac arrest on the field Monday night in Cincinnati and needed to be resuscitated on the field.

He was able to gradually wake up over Wednesday night from being sedated, to hold the hands of family and medical staff and to communicate in writing.

In an update Friday morning from the physicians at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the Bills said Hamlin “continues to progress remarkably in his recovery. His neurologic function remains intact, and he has been able to talk to his family and care team.”

That family included his teammates, as coach Sean McDermott surprised Bills players and coaches.

“We put Damar on the big screen,” McDermott said. “So, he was larger than life in there for us.”

Once Week 18 is completed, Kansas City will have played a full 17-game season, but the Bills and Bengals will have only played 16 games apiece.

Hamlin has indeed seemed larger than life this week to the outside world getting to know him. But for the Bills, the days since Monday have been so grueling because Hamlin is not a larger-than-life figure to them. He’s Damar. DHam. Three.

In any other week, he would have been sitting right there in the meeting room with them. The call was brief, but provided a boost as the Bills look toward Sunday’s home game against the New England Patriots. The team will wear No. 3 patches as part of tributes to Hamlin around the NFL.

“I can’t remember the order of things, and it was not a long interaction as you imagine with his situation,” McDermott said, “but he made hand signals, hand gestures.”

McDermott laughed as he re-enacted how Hamlin had held up his arms, flexed to the side in strength, right away to start the call.

“He flexed on ‘em, I guess,” McDermott said with a laugh.

From there, Hamlin made a few other gestures, all true to his usual self.

“He’s just got some staple things that they know him for, and that he does,” McDermott said. “He made the heart symbol probably more than anything.”

A flex, a heart, and a thumbs up. And a few words that Hamlin says often, but that resonated more this time.

“Somewhere in the midst of that – and it was a little bit hard to hear, as you’d imagine – he said, ‘I love you, boys,’ ” McDermott said. “Of course, it got the guys.”

It got McDermott, too. As he tried to describe it hours later, the coach was still moved by the moment.

“Probably won’t be able to do it justice, honestly, with the words. Amazing. Touching,” McDermott said. “To see Damar, through my own eyes, I know it’s something I’ve been looking forward to, kind of needing to see, I guess.”

He needed to see for himself that Hamlin would be OK. Nothing would mean more than that, but a close second was the reaction in the room from everyone else.

“Hair on the back of my neck stood up when he said ‘I love you boys,’ ” General Manager Brandon Beane said. “The room went nuts. It was awesome.”

Matt Worswick, assistant to the head coach in Buffalo, and Tabani Richards, a Bills’ assistant athletic trainer still in Cincinnati with Hamlin, coordinated the call. But McDermott hesitated to give the rest of the players and coaches a heads up.

“How do I know that we’ll be able to overcome? We have to,” McDermott said. “Just like we’ve done many times before. This city, and the people of Western New York, have dealt with what they’ve dealt with. That’s what you do.”

Hope can be powerful, and it was certainly needed this week. But the flip side of hope is that it can be cruel, and the coach didn’t want to give hope without certainty that the call could happen right then.

“I wanted to make sure that that was actually going to be able to happen with Damar’s medical schedule there,” McDermott said. “When I said that we had a treat in store, you could see the look on their eyes in anticipation to what was probably coming.”

“We felt it,” Dawkins said. “It was more so McDermott – McDermott gave it away. I’m just going to say it’s true.”

Part of why the Bills have been able to thoroughly support each other this week is because they’re so attuned to each other’s cues. Dawkins is deeply familiar with the mannerism of his head coach, so much so that he knew the treat in store could only be one thing.

“We know our coach, he’s a very straightforward guy. And the amount of expression that he walked into the team room with, you already knew,” Dawkins said. “If you’re smiling like this, if you have a nice little walk, Sean McDermott, there’s only one thing that you’re going to be that happy for. So just give it to us now.”

The players were following each medical update, too. Dr. Timothy Pritts and Dr. William Knight IV of UCMC gave a thorough update on Hamlin to reporters on Thursday.

“There are many, many steps still ahead of him,” Pritts said Thursday.

At that point the next step was for Hamlin to be completely breathing on his own, Pritts said.

“That will be the next big milestone for him,” Pritts said.

Over Thursday night, Hamlin reached that step. But Friday, when Hamlin raised his arms and flexed, his teammates were reminded of the Hamlin they knew.

“Strength. Strength. Just simply strength,” Dawkins said, of what he saw. “I think that he sees that the world has his back and then I think he sees that his teammates and his brothers and his family and his immediate people have his back.

“And when people have your back positively and unconditionally, it just gives you strength. And I think that’s why when we first saw him, he went just like this,” Dawkins said, as he flexed as well. “It’s a beautiful feeling, and I definitely think that he’s feeling stronger than he was.”

Strength runs in the family for the Hamlins. Beane saw that up close, as he stayed in Cincinnati with Hamlin and his family. There, he got to know Damar’s parents, Mario and Nina, on a much deeper level.

“I was in awe just watching their strength through such difficult up and down moments,” Beane said. “I don’t believe I would have handled it with the same strength if that was my son.”

Strength comes in different forms, the Bills have noted this week, as players and staff stay vulnerable with each other. They’ve gone from the overwhelming fear of the worst for Hamlin, to the overflowing joy of his remarkable progress.

It was a treat Friday, finally, to cry for good news.

“We’re on a positive ride right now, where we got to see our guy, and we got to see ‘3’ smile and that’s literally all we wanted,” Dawkins said. “Like he’s here with us and that’s all that we can ask for, is that he’s taking steps forward. …

“All of the (medical staff) that have been working on him and taking care of him and all of the love and the prayers, it’s been working. So, it doesn’t mean stop now. It means go even harder.”

La La Anthony On Her Love Life: “I Don’t Feel Like Any Guys Want To Date Me”

A new year is a time for new beginnings and optimism. However, not everyone is able to maintain cheer in every aspect of their life. For example, La La Anthony is having a hard time finding her prince charming – or so she told TMZ this week.

The gossip blog caught up with the mother of one at LAX recently. At the time, they asked about comments she made last year on the Call Her Daddy podcast. If you didn’t tune in, the Power starlet dished about the men in her DMs, specifically noting that they’re often much younger than her.

“Literally, guys will DM me, or wanna take me out. I’ll Google them and I’ll be like, ‘You’re 22 years old?!’ Like, HOW?!” she told host Alex Cooper.

Since then, it seems Anthony hasn’t had any luck settling down with a suitor. When TMZ asked about her prior comments on the podcast, she said, “I retract my statement. It’s the top of the year and I don’t feel like any guys wanna date me,” she teased with a smile and laugh.

When the interviewer asked her about her dream man’s age, she playfully said, “Age ain’t nothin’ but a number!” while hopping in the backseat of her waiting vehicle. Pressing for more, the journalist prompted her to pick between a 22-year-old guy and a 40-year-old man.

“I prefer whoever is for me,” she wisely responded. “Whoever God says is for me, I’m good with it.” However, she noted afterward that “22 is a little too young.” When it comes to 34, though, “we can do that,” she says.

Before embarking on her journey back into the world of dating, La La was married to NBA player Carmelo Anthony. They were married for seven years, and share one son, 15-year-old Kiyan, who they continue to co-parent.

Damar Hamlin’s breathing tube removed and he’s able to talk, telling teammates “Love you boys,” Buffalo Bills say

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is breathing on his own and able to talk after having his breathing tube removed, his agent and the team said Friday — the latest step in his remarkable recovery in the four days since going into cardiac arrest and being resuscitated on the field during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bills said Friday in a statement that Hamlin’s “neurologic function remains intact and he has been able to talk to his family and care team.” The development was first reported by The Athletic.

“He continues to progress remarkably in his recovery,” the Bills said in a tweet.

In another tweet, the team said he joined players and coaches for their daily meeting via FaceTime and said: “Love you boys.”

Speaking with reporters, Bills coach Sean McDermott called the moment “amazing” and “touching.”

“I probably won’t be able to do it justice,” McDermott said. “… To see Damar, No. 1, through my own eyes, I know it’s something I’ve been looking forward to, kind of needing to see, I guess.”

McDermott said he kept it a secret from the team before announcing he had “a treat in store” for them — putting Hamlin on the big screen in the meeting room.

“They stood up right away and clapped for him and yelled some things to him, and it was a pretty cool exchange for a few seconds there,” McDermott said.

Hamlin flexed his arms — drawing a laugh from the coach — put his hands together to form a heart and gave his teammates a thumbs-up, McDermott said.

“He’s just an infectious young man with an infectious personality,” McDermott said.

The 24-year-old Hamlin was still listed Thursday in critical condition in the intensive care unit of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Aside from being able to communicate by writing, Hamlin was also been able to grip people’s hands.

“So we know that it’s not only that the lights are on. We know that he’s home. And it appears that all the cylinders are firing within his brain, which is greatly gratifying for all of us,” Dr. Timothy Pritts said. “He still has significant progress he needs to make, but this marks a really good turning point in his ongoing care.”

Hamlin’s recovery continues to trend in a positive direction after his heart stopped while making what appeared to be a routine tackle in the first quarter of a game against the Bengals on Monday night. The second-year player spent his first two days in the hospital under sedation to allow his body to recover, and on a ventilator to assist his breathing.

The Bills were uplifted by the encouraging medical reports as they returned to practice Thursday in preparation to play a home game against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The sight of Hamlin collapsing, which was broadcast to a North American TV audience on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” has led to an outpouring of support from fans and players from across the league. Fans, team owners and players — including Tom Brady and Russell Wilson — have made donations to Hamlin’s Chasing M’s Foundation, which had raised more than $7.8 million by Friday morning.

Husband’s ‘Words and Love’ Saved Wife After Boat Propeller Hit Her

  • British woman Amor Armitage was diving near the island of Cozumel when a boat propeller ripped into her body.
  •  The boat propeller sliced her abdomen, genitals, and legs, causing serious injuries.
  • The “words and love” of her husband, Chase, kept her alive as she was rushed to the hospital, she said.

A British yoga instructor was snorkeling off the coast of the Mexican island of Cozumel in the Caribbean Sea on December 17 when she was cut open and seriously injured by a boat propeller.

Amor Armitage, 37, was immediately rushed to a hospital where she underwent a life-saving four-hour operation to reconstruct her bones and tendons, The Times of London reported.

But it was her husband Chase Armitage’s “words and love” that she said kept her alive on that terrifying journey to the hospital, she told the newspaper.

Armitage told The Times that if “it wasn’t for my angel Chase I would not be here today.”

A crowdfunding page to help get Armitage back to the UK following the accident, which friend Rita Melro set up, relays what happened on December 17. “Amor was caught by a propeller from the boat they were diving from which caused extensive injuries to her abdomen and legs,” the friend wrote.

In an Instagram post on Friday, Armitage said everything seemed to “slow down” as she felt the boat propeller hit her abdomen, legs, and genitals. She said she let out a “visceral scream” for help.

The boat’s captain told her to go up the ladder onto the boat, she said, but she could see her “insides out.” In the post, Armitage explained that she somehow managed to push herself up onto the boat.

She described on Instagram how her body felt “mutilated,” and she felt “pain that is out of this world,” per Sky News.

Then her husband, a professional stunt performer, arrived.

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, her husband said: “I just ditched the heavy scuba kit and held her tight as best I could. You hear people talk about soul mates, and Amor and I, we are those soul mates. We’re quite spiritual people, we feel closely connected.

“‘I told her I wouldn’t let her go, that we had so much strength together, that the world needed her and it wasn’t time for her to leave. And that she had shown she was a miracle by staying alive.”

He continued: “But it wasn’t even about the words. The love we have is powerful enough. She also has a positive mindset and, despite the situation she faced, that helped her greatly.”

Armitage’s husband is now trying to raise money to pay for her treatment, which so far costs in excess of £60,000 ($72,318), The Times reported.

She is currently in a recovery ward and is receiving daily treatment in a hyperbaric chamber to increase her oxygen levels and to help speed her recovery, The Mail on Sunday reported.

Nintendo Switch Ports We’d Love To See In 2023

Image: Nintendo Life

Early in 2022, we put out a list of 14 games we’d love to have on Switch. Since then, we’ve got at least five of them on Switch, so we’re either prescient or powerful. So, in hopes that 2023 will be similarly rewarding, we’re aiming this feature at you, Doug Bowser — we’d love to see the following games ported onto Nintendo’s hybrid console. You don’t even have to credit us, we’re just that nice.

The Big Games

Wind Waker HD & Twilight Princess HD

Let’s start it off easy, eh? These two excellent Zelda remasters have been trapped on the Wii U for too long! Bring their glorious HD selves over to the Switch — bundle them together, even — and we’ll be happier than a Goron in a rockslide. We’ve already got Skyward Sword, which is arguably the hardest to port of those three games, so surely this pair can’t be far behind?

What are the chances?

Call us hopelessly optimistic, but we feel like there have been hints that this could happen for a while now, and we can’t see why Nintendo wouldn’t consider at least one of them an easy win. Still, rumours are not reality.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Again, we’ve already got Super Mario Galaxy 1 in that short-lived Super Mario 3D All-Stars bumper pack. SMG2 is one of the best Mario games of all time, and it would be such a boon to be able to play it on Switch, maybe even before the next Super Mario game (Odyssey 2, perhaps?) comes out. It’s been a while since we’ve bounced around with our second favourite Italian plumber, hasn’t it?

What are the chances?

Honestly, who knows with Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo gave us 3D All-Stars and then ripped it from our hands by taking it off sale (although it really isn’t hard to find even now). Behind the closed doors of the Japanese HQ, anything could be happening, but with Tears of the Kingdom on the slate, it sort of feels like it’s Mario’s turn to hog the spotlight next, you know?

Tomb Raider: Survivor Trilogy

This trilogy compilation release of Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, was released for PS4 and Xbox One, so it stands to reason that they’d run well enough on Switch, too. They’re rather good games (with the original being a real stand-out late in the PS3 / Xbox 360 era) that tell the origin story of the iconic character, and they all have a flair for cinematic action and some occasional tomb raiding. Not all diehard fans of the IP approve of the games, but we reckon they’re a fun time.

What are the chances?

Low-ish, we’d say. This is an anniversary year for the franchise and would have been the ideal time, but Square Enix instead announced Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris for Switch, coming next year. Still, it’s better than nothing.

Batman: Arkham Collection

It sometimes feels like the Rocksteady developed ‘main’ Arkham games have been done a disservice. Not only was the ‘Return to Arkham’ PS4 / Xbox One collection a technical disappointment, but the newest entry (Arkham Knight) has gone unloved and hasn’t had any upgrades for the latest hardware. The trilogy, nevertheless, is comprised of three excellent games that would be awesome to play on Switch.

What are the chances?

It should be technically possible, though the third entry would be rather demanding to port across. The first two games should be do-able however, and let’s not forget that we had Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition and Batman: Arkham Origins on Wii U, and even Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate on 3DS (later in its HD form on Wii U). The precedent is there.

Will it actually happen? Considering the haphazard treatment of the games over the years probably not. Still, you never know…

Metroid Prime

With Metroid Prime 4 scheduled to be with us sometime prior to Halley’s Comet return, whispers abound that Nintendo is sitting on a remastered version of Metroid Prime, just waiting for the right time to pull the trigger and whet everyone’s appetite ahead of MP4’s arrival. We’d rather have the trilogy in a simple HD port, to be honest, but it’s not our decision.

So, what are the chances this year?

Well, assuming that Prime 4 development is progressing — however slow-and-steady that progress may be — it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that we’ll see the rumoured Prime remaster, with Prime 4 to follow. Nintendo will want to start the Prime 4 Morph Ball rolling at some point, and releasing Metroid Prime on Switch would be a great way to do that.

Or, you know, the entire Prime trilogy. We’d take that, too.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

We got Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, remember? Remember the Wii U and Mass Effect 3? Sitting in a tree? K-I-S-S-I-N-G? Those were the days when EA execs looked at the Wii’s numbers and thought they better go all-in on Wii U. And just look how that turned out.

What are the chances?

Having been stung on Wii U, EA hasn’t bothered much with Switch. Since then, EA has also decided to go all-in on Xbox, with many of their games available through Microsoft’s Game Pass. Many of the games in this list will suffer from this — if something’s raking in the chips through Game Pass, why bother with Switch, where the game will run worse and make (probably) less money? This one ain’t that likely, unfortunately.

Fallout (any of them)

It is a crime that the Fallout series only has one game on Switch, and it’s the fun-but-forgettable mobile game, Fallout Shelter, and not New Vegas, Fallout 3, or Fallout 4. We’re relatively sure that each one of these games would make a fantastic Switch port, since ol’ Bethesda did such a great job porting over Skyrim to every platform ever, and Obsidian brought us Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity II, but they just haven’t materialised.

What are the chances?

Weeeeeell, Microsoft now owns both Obsidian and Bethesda, the two developers of the Fallout series, so… not very likely? But then again, the Switch has Minecraft, Ori, and (apparently) will be getting Call of Duty, too, so it’s not a zero chance. But you know how complicated company relationships can be, especially with rivals. We think this would be an easy win that could revitalise the older Fallout games for new audiences, but we aren’t Phil Spencer.

Dragon Age (any of them)

Oh, can you imagine how much fun it would be to play even just Dragon Age: Origins on Switch? Surely someone at BioWare or EA can polish up a 13-year-old game for a 5-year-old console, no? And if we managed to get Dragon Age II and the glorious Dragon Age: Inquisition on the Switch as well, we would probably be glued to that tiny screen for months. If Skyrim and The Witcher 3 can do it, Dragon Age Inquisition can do it, too!

What are the chances?

Pretty low, for the same reasons as Fallout and Mass Effect: Xbox and EA are unlikely to let these behemoths out of their stables. Microsoft is more willing to share than Sony, it’s true, but EA seems to have decided that the Switch isn’t worth their precious time (proof: the travesty that is FIFA on Switch. Sigh).

Yakuza: Like A Dragon

Another regular request of ours, 2020’s Yakuza: Like A Dragon and its Dragon Quest-loving turn-based gameplay would still be gratefully received on Switch.

What are the chances?

Still low, unfortunately. You would hope that the broad audience and colossal success of Switch might make the series’ producers reconsider putting the game on Nintendo’s console, but Sega isn’t the fastest company when it comes to gauging customer trends. As much as we’d love to see Ichiban become Switchiban, we might be asking too much.

Come on — Switchiban? Giving you solid gold over here!

Grand Theft Auto V

First up, it’s the fifth mainline entry in the GTA franchise. It introduced several new things to the series, the most significant being not gating the city from the beginning. Clunky in some ways, stunningly ambitious in others, the sheer scope of Rockstar’s environments is astonishing, and exploring Los Santos on Switch would be a fine thing — it was on PS3 and Xbox 360, for goodness’ sake!

What are the chances?

Not impossible from a technical standpoint (PS3 and Xbox 360 just about handled it), but the game’s biggest innovation makes a Switch port less likely; GTA Online is still a colossal money-spinner for Rockstar, so a port of an old game to a console with a patchy online reputation probably isn’t an in-house priority. And after GTA Trilogy’s launch state and the drubbing the developers received for it, there’s probably not much inclination on Rockstar’s part to get their hands dirty with a distraction like this. A shame.

Mad Max

Mad Max deserved better. Sure, it was a middle-of-the-road (pun intended) action-adventure that pulled from the Assassin’s Creed school of design — that is, “map icons, everywhere” — but it was really fun to careen around the desert in a souped-up jalopy. It deserves to be able to get back up, brush off the dirt, and have a second chance at life on the Switch.

What are the chances?

Pretty microscopic, in no small part due to the fact that no one has thought about this game much since its 2015 release. We would put our money on Avalanche and Warner Bros. wanting to do more productive things with their time than remastering a game that received a lukewarm reception even when it was shiny and new.

Shadow of Mordor

Speaking of games that were pretty cool but faded away into the cultural soup, Shadow of Mordor! This innovative Lord of the Rings spin-off introduced us to the Nemesis System, in which your enemies not only remember you, but you form a sort of relationship with them during the course of the story, watching them rise up the ranks to lead armies before you get to fight them again. We haven’t seen anything quite like it since.

What are the chances?

Hard to say exactly, but it’s been almost ten years since this game came out. Monolith has since been working on a Wonder Woman game, although there hasn’t been much news on that front other than a ton of recent new hires. Would they have the time to polish up Shadow of Mordor for us poor Switch players?

Tales of Arise

An action-RPG from Bandai Namco, Tales of Arise is the most entry in the Tales series featuring such games as Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia. This latest game was very well-received on other platforms, and we’d jump at the chance of playing it on Switch.

What are the chances?

Various games from the Tales series have appeared on Nintendo platforms over the years — including Switch — and Arise is an Unreal Engine 4 game, which Switch supports. That said, the series producer said back in August that there were “no plans” to bring the game to Switch — before also adding the usual ‘if we see demand’ caveat.

Marvel Snap

A dark horse in the race for 2022 Game of the Year, this mobile strategy card game came from nowhere to sweep a bunch of prizes. Apparently, it’s really good. And it’s a mobile game, which is easier to port over to Switch than a whole Fallout or whatever, right?

What are the chances?

We think the chances are surprisingly high, actually. It’s a simple enough game, without all the confusing complications behind other card games like Magic: The Gathering, and it’s got some stellar scores. It wouldn’t be that big of a step to bring it over to Switch now that it’s proved to be mega-popular, we reckon.

That’s all the big games we’d love to see on Switch next year, but keep going to page two to find out which stellar indies and mid-size games we’ve got on our list (spoilers: one of them is Papers, Please!)…

A love letter for the original Steam Link: I regret taking you for granted

Back in 2018 I managed to nab a physical Steam Link when Valve was flogging them for £2.50 here in the UK ($2.50 in USD). I was actually buying a Steam Controller for my then-partner and spotted the bargain while browsing through the Steam website, so I purchased the gadget on a whim. That little black puck has since left such a good impression on me that every alternative service has paled in comparison.

The Steam Link is fairly straightforward. It’s a wireless box-shaped dongle that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port, allowing you to stream games directly from your PC over your home internet connection. I had great success using it over Wi-fi, seeing barely any detectable lag, but you could also connect the device directly to your network via ethernet for a more stable connection. It even has three USB 2.0 ports for you to hook up wired controllers, mice, keyboards, or headsets in case you don’t have the luxury of owning a load of wireless peripherals.

I’ve had access to both a computer and various gaming consoles over the years, so I’ve never considered having an allegiance to either side of the PC vs console debate. But there are some titles that just feel better to play sitting on a couch with a controller. The physical Steam Link gave me the best of both worlds: I could play The Witcher 3 or Skyrim with all of my mods enabled from the comfort of my living room, or walk over to my bedroom to play World of Warcraft directly on the same PC.

The Steam Link app has caused me issues despite its apparent superiority over its predecessor

The aforementioned ex-partner got the Steam Link when we split, by which point Valve had discontinued the gadget and removed its listing from its Steam platform for good. The Steam Link app was released on Android as its replacement in 2018 (later followed by a version for iOS in 2019,) and can be downloaded directly onto most smart TVs. It functions similarly to the original Steam Link and, on paper, offers some advantages over the now obsolete box (such as regular software updates, and support for 4K streaming where the Steam Link was capped at 1080p). But I’ve still experienced numerous connectivity issues and abysmal latency while using it – and now I’m yearning for the dongle again.

a:hover]:text-gray-63 text-gray-63 dark:[&>a:hover]:text-gray-bd dark:text-gray-bd dark:[&>a]:text-gray-bd [&>a]:shadow-underline-gray-63 [&>a:hover]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&>a]:shadow-underline-gray dark:[&>a:hover]:shadow-underline-gray”>Image: Alice Newcome-Beill

For example, on the days when it does work, the stream randomly freezes or crashes (despite having a solid internet connection) and the input lag is so unbearable that I usually abandon efforts and begrudgingly play on my PC directly. Some days the app randomly disconnects from my PC or refuses to load, forcing me to delete and then re-install it on my TV. These are all issues I never experienced with the original Steam Link hardware — it worked effortlessly every time it was plugged in.

I can’t replicate the reliability of the original Steam Link despite having a better tech setup and faster internet

I have better internet speeds and a more stable Wi-Fi connection than I once did. My Philips OLED TV is less than two years old. My current ethernet-connected gaming computer is more powerful and is even closer to both my router and television than it was when I used the Steam Link hardware. I’ve checked every relevant parameter and connection, and by all accounts, the Steam Link app should work. And yet it doesn’t.

Other services haven’t lived up to my previous streaming experience either. The GameStream feature on my Nvidia Shield TV (which works similarly to the Steam Link app) came pretty darn close, but Nvidia recently announced that it plans to discontinue the service in February 2023. Nvidia now points users towards its cloud gaming platform GeForce Now (with which I’ve personally experienced middling performance, despite paying for the Priority tier) or, frustratingly, the Steam Link app. I’ve also found other cloud streaming platforms like Google Stadia to be effectively unplayable due to latency. While cloud gaming tech is neat, it’s not yet a viable replacement for hardware like the Steam Link.

a:hover]:text-gray-63 text-gray-63 dark:[&>a:hover]:text-gray-bd dark:text-gray-bd dark:[&>a]:text-gray-bd [&>a]:shadow-underline-gray-63 [&>a:hover]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&>a]:shadow-underline-gray dark:[&>a:hover]:shadow-underline-gray”>Image: Nvidia

Outside of hunting for used Steam Link listings online, there are two solutions left. One is to hook my TV directly to my router via an ethernet cable. That’s likely to solve at least some of the connectivity problems, but it’s slightly infuriating that I never had to do the same for the physical Steam Link. It worked perfectly on my then-slower Wi-Fi connection over a much greater distance, and I didn’t have to drag cables around my living room.

The other (more drastic) solution would be to fork out a stack of cash for a small, dedicated PC for my TV, such as an Intel NUC. I’m only half considering that since that could cost over a thousand dollars, and I already have a perfectly serviceable gaming PC in another room. At the end of the day, that’s an awful lot of money to spend in order to replicate an experience that once cost me less than a cup of coffee.

The Steam Link hardware was destined for obsolescence due to its limitations

Valve’s reasoning for discontinuing the dongle is sound — its 1080p ceiling would have eventually rendered it obsolete, and the software version can be used on non-HDMI devices. Still, I’m far from the only person experiencing similar discontent with the app. Reddit threads still regularly request help with troubleshooting issues, while other users have compared their experiences using the two Steam Link versions to see which offered better performance.

Despite the imminent shutdown of Google Stadia, many companies have also worked hard to push cloud gaming to consumers this year. Gaming Chromebooks have been released that come with Nvidia’s GeForce Now service preinstalled for example, and Xbox Cloud Gaming is eventually making its way onto Meta Quest VR headsets. Streaming games from the cloud is brilliant when it works, but for folks like myself, it simply isn’t a viable alternative to LAN-based game streaming yet. Until cloud gaming truly becomes the exciting frontier these companies promise, nothing will top that 1080p dongle.
